I went out to some local dealers and tried out the Monitor Audio RS6's, the Dynaudio Audience 52's, the Focal JMLabs 716V,816V and some miserable B&W DM somethings.

I really need to find a dealer in Montreal who has the JMLabs and the Monitor Audios so I can do some testing between the two of them... I prefered the Focal's, but then again I heard the MAs in a diffrent showroom, 4 days prior to my audition of the 816Vs'.

Then there is price: I could pick up the MAs for about 1100, but the Focals are a full 800 more...

I have to retry the MAs because my first impression was that they were very "bassy", but I had miserable recordings that didn't showcase their midrange/high frequencies... 50 Cent "The Massacre" is definately not coming with me next time...

I also want to try Epos M22.2s? -- there is a HiFi show in Montreal next week, I'll go see what's up.

Have you tried Fillion Électronique ? They carry Focal and JMlab.

Also, when and where is that audio show you mentioned ? I went to some big-ass audio show 5 years ago at the Sheratton hotel (I think) and there was so much dream equipment ...

Just so we're clear Focal and JMLabs are the same company... they now mostly refer to themselves as focal, but before they were known as "Focal-JMLabs"... I bought my last set from "Sonor-Filtronique" http://www.filtronique.com/... very good setups there.

I think it's on right now, but I'm not sure... I had made plans to go this Friday... it's at the Sheraton. However I can't seem to find any details online...

Wait: http://www.fsiexpo.com/2007/b/index.html

why not run the speaker wires under your chair mat instead of having them on the outside...

Because I need to move the rears back and further apart about four feet when I switch to "movie mode"... I don't have a TV. Otherwise, yes I would hide the speaker wires.

You made me look like an idiot right now .... I will be there on Fryday.

Not intended :D An honnest mistake, for sure. I'm really looking forward to it, as it will most likely result in some new speakers for me soon after!

hmm nobody post any paradigm stuff. heres mine studio 40 v3. still waiting on my new yamaha 659 receiver to come in. I tried them with my old pioneer elite a-35r intergrated with moderate success but i want more power ;)

im going with a yamaha 659 for a future sub addition. I went conservative as this is my bedroom setup and its my first go around. If i ever find a place suitable, ill have a full livingroom setup but i dont see that till im like 40ish (25 now)

Actually, the line-out from the dock connector on the ipod doesnt sound half bad. Its the headphone port that makes it sound like crap :)

thanks. actually, it's a yamaha receiver (htr-6090). i guess manufacturers use the same OSD for the ipod dock. hehe.

Man xref, that's the exact receiver i'd be looking to upgrade to. If only it didn't cost as much as the HDTV I need first :)

I've tried out the Signature series ones (the S8) and they were really impressive, such an incredible bass output from just 2 towers, it was ridiculous. The studio series is pretty awesome too, I like the 40s and their reference series brothers.

i auditioned the studio 60 and 20 at my local dealer hooked up to the their arcam stuff. I liked the 60s but it had TONs of bass. Then i went to the 20s and they were on the lean side for me. So i felt confident getting the 40s unheard. I plan to auditon higher up stuff when i can afford it as to me it makes no sense to window shop, it will make you do bad credit card choices.

Finally upgraded my speaker wires - 100 points to whoever works out which is the old & which is the new!

It's Gale Symphony 400 btw, the replacement for XL315 (the guy didn't mention 400, he was trying to sell me 315 to get rid of the last stock!). At £1.99 (~$4) a metre (meter) I'm pretty impressed, things sound a LOT better!

you let out the magic smoke!

that thing looks like it got pretty hot.

I bet it smelt luuurvly! I've blown a hard drive controller board with a mis-wired molex, it smelt awful, like burning breakfast cereal.

@Blackstone

Bryston ROCKS. best warrenty ever. 20years IIRC
their pro stuff is awesome i imagne their home theatre is just as good.

and Canadian too :)

Bryston 4B dual Mono Amp

http://www.bryston.ca/4bsst_m.html

Bryston 7B Monoblock
http://www.bryston.ca/7bsst_m.html

if i ever win the lottery im getting all bryston 7B mono blocks.
either that or bridge mono Crown I-Tech 8000's for every speaker

My next home theater project is going to be almost entirely driven by Bryston. The point of diminished returns starts right after Bryston, in my opinion. I love the stuff. The Bryston SP-2 preamp processor is like the best on the market for surround. Stereophile Class A. baby. I have the 3B-ST so I'll either go to a 9BSST 5 channel amp to drive the speakers or keep the 3B and add 3 channels somehow. I'll keep my B&W N804 speakers as fronts, add the powered matching subwoofer, and grab a pair of N805's for the rear speakers. Then a 60 inch LCD rear projection. It is going to a monster of a system, I wish I could get it going by the time Cyrsis comes out but I won't have that kind of money until I'm out of school.

The Martin Logans are their top of the line (ML Summits) so they set me back about $12,000 + tax. The upstream electronics are about $11,000. The Strata Mini speakers are $2,000.

They're all gooooooood!!:D :D

Re the nunchuck... wow! I didnt even know they made those for the 360! I'm going to look into it and see if it's good.... does it work for all games?

Thanks SS!!:p

What do you think about the Strata Mini's? Are they a solid performer in the $2k and less range? They seem like a very versatile speaker and lots of reviewers love them.

Minis are solid performers for sure. I have them hooked up right now instead of the Martin Logans. They're good and they're solid speakers. They are also semi-full range, extend real low (to about 27-29hz) and are adjustable with their bass response.

I think you should really consider them if you're looking to spend about $2K for speakers.

Where are you located and can you get a demo?

Im in MD and dont know of any real way to get a demo other than buying and returning if I dont like. This is more of a long range, in the future purchase. I have prospects on a pretty comfy job this summer. I'm moving into a single family home (that some friends and I are renting) for my senior year in college. My JBL northridge surround system is going to do theater duty in the basement. Im looking for something nice for stereo listening in my bedroom. I was looking at the Onix SP-3 tube amp and probably an OPPO CD player. The speakers are really up in the air and will probably depend on the job situation. I've also go the DIY bug so I might go that way.

The reason I ask is because I was listening to Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms" SACD in Tweeter the other day on a set of Martin Logan Vantage and Vistas. This was being Played through the Krell integrated amplifier and the krell SACD player. It was quite an an impressive system and i really liked the Martin Logans and their very immersive sound. I know that you have the Summits as well as the mini stratas. So because the stratas are possibly in my price range and the martin logans definitely arent at this point in my life, i was curious to hear your take on them.
