The reason I ask is because I was listening to Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms" SACD in Tweeter the other day on a set of Martin Logan Vantage and Vistas. This was being Played through the Krell integrated amplifier and the krell SACD player. It was quite an an impressive system and i really liked the Martin Logans and their very immersive sound. I know that you have the Summits as well as the mini stratas. So because the stratas are possibly in my price range and the martin logans definitely arent at this point in my life, i was curious to hear your take on them.

On comparable electronics, the ML Vistas beat out the Minis no problem... the only thing the Vistas lose in is the bass extension. The Vistas have better coherence and better midrange and realism.

Minis are great, but IMO, the MLs are their killer rivals. From the Vistas to the Vantages to the Summits, the MLs are tough to beat within their price range.

It's hard to beat the Minis at it's price range though.... and they do give impressive bass extension.

Yea the Martin Logans are definitely nice but they are just out of my price range and therefore I can't even consider them. The Minis are pushing it but if everything falls in place with the job, they may be feasible.

burnt silicon is a geeks worst nightmare. I once left my BFG 7800gtx's fan unplugged and started playing Supreme commander on full detail. To say the least my room smelt bad for a week after the thermalpad around the chip caught on fire. Card still works great though, i caught it in time to cut power and blow out the fire.

Im glad they started putting heatsinks on the new revisions of the x-fi's

My PS Audio Digital Link III DAC arrived! I waited about 3 weeks before the guys over at PS Audio actually caught up to orders and shipped me mine... and they're still running back-logged up to today!

Apparently, these DACs are like hotcakes!

Here are the arrival pics:

And yes.... it has immensely improved the sound of my system. Going from the DACs on the Squeezebox3 to this guy has been almost a "revelation" of sorts! I'm very pleased with the performance coming from this DAC. I'm going to stick with this until I can afford to move up to the next level of digital front-ends.

2 thumbs up!

;)

Sweet, it finally arrived! I like the brushed aluminum face plate, and the fact that it's balanced is just icing on the cake.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it very much!

Oh man, you've been using the onboard squeezebox DAC all this time? You must be reeling from the improvement! The Squeezebox3 is a fantastic way to get your music from your storage system to your DAC--you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between most high end CD transports and the squeezebox, but the DAC is just not up to par. A handsome looking unit too. There is nothing better than cracking open a box with new audio gear inside! Congrats and enjoy!:D

Can't argue with you one bit, my friend.... you're right on the dot on all respects!

:D

Got any favorite test CD's?

Right now.... almost everything sounds phenomenal! I had a local audiophile over the other weekend because he wanted to listen to the Minis. He loved them... but then he wanted to listen to the MLs....

Bad move, my friend.

:)

Latest iteration. Fixed the mounting of my rear surrounds... they were half-ass mounted to the stands before. That's a fridge door behind the desk. I dented it last year at my friend's house, had to buy him a new one. Since I love brushed metal, I hung onto it. I still need to pop off the "Fridgidaire" tag.

The view from my seat

charge.jpg

Phone charger and mp3 jack, run underneath the Z-5500 control station for convenience. The charger\transmitter for the G7 mouse is positioned optimally in front of my mousing hand.

printer.jpg

Printer stashed in computer supply cabinet. Must remember to open the cabinet before printing. You can also see where I keep my scanner and Wacom tablet.

dvds.jpg

On the other side of the desk is my media cabinet with DVDs and books. Here are the DVDs. This is only about 90% of my collection, the rest is loaned out. I actually prune it from time to time, ritually destroying discs or giving them away.

I would make a table out of that door.

Ballpoint,

As always, clean and neat setup. Nice components... but man, you gotta get rid of that fridge door.

LOL... :).

Thanks Drew!

"Audio antics"
Haha, I love the way you put it Joey!
^_^

The only big upgrade was going from my MHdt labs Constantine DAC to their new Paradisea+ DAC. Doing so has introduced me into the world of tubes! It's not as scary as I thought.
It was a very nice upgrade, and the tube allows me to tweak the sound. I've found a tube that really works good with my Darth Beyers. I think i'm pretty much as far as I'm going to get for a few years.

The next big upgrade may be to the Stax O2 with Justin's Blue Hawaii, but since i'm still in school for another 3-6 years, that won't happen any time soon. When I'm out of college, I'm going to want to really upgrade my speaker setup too, big time!

As a fun aside, I've actually started to get into photography, and so that will be my next monetary sink hole for the short term (about to buy a new lens to upgrade the stock one, :sigh: ).

Fun stuff!

Oh god... I want to get into photography and photoshop too! Arg!

And yes, fun stuff!!

Nice to see welcome the world of tubes with open arms! I used to be so staunch SS that I thought tubes colored the sound negatively, but ever since I heard my first tube preamp, I was hooked! Transistors or tubes, they're all colored in one way or another. It's all about getting the most natural sound out of one's system, and I believe it's easier to do through tubes, but this does not preclude a SS system to sound just as good and natural.

I have a question for you Drew... but I'll save it for another thread.... look for it.

:)

Kind of a concidence, I just bought this two weeks ago:

Very nice, I'm envious (I'm using a D50 with kit lens, but soon to upgrade to the Nikkor 18-200 VRII).

I seriously have to take a macro shot of my speakers. I'm a little surprised I havn't gotten around to doing that yet. That'll be my goal for this weekend.

I def want to see pics of your setup again, Drew!

Ya beat me to it, Mag. BP could prop that door over a pair of sawhorses, cabinets, etc. to make a most eclectic table.

That was the original plan but I just lack for space in my apartment right now. I considered replacing my desk with it but I need my desk to be rock stable. When I have the room I do intend to make a funky table\countertop out of it.

Some updated pics of my PC speaker system (in sig). I'm still deciding between grilles on or off.

Wolf,

A man of impeccable taste! Piano Rosewood XLS and a nice 2407 (right?) monitor!

Love it man! And... no contest... naked, no grills!

Thanks for the props, Pinipig!! It means a lot coming from the forum's dean of prestigious audio. Yes, that's a 2407 nestled between my X-LS beauties. I aced the grilles so both speakers are in their birthday suits, now.

Whatever I am perceived as, it dont matter. :p :D

What matters is that I do it for the music reproduction. Today, we had our 2nd Annual Martin Logan Chicago Meet that started out at my place, then we headed to various other member's living rooms to listen to their systems... and we also made a stop by an Indian buffet restaurant and a super hi-end dealer where $10K was entry... we auditioned a $100K system! All in all... a wonderful day!

And tomorrow, I have a friend coming by so we can have dimsum at Chinatown and then back for an hour of kicking back with some music through the Summits. He'll take the sweetspot, I'll sit off-key this time around. :)

I've been giving so many auditions to local audiophiles lately. Just last weekend I had a guy over who listened to my Minis and he ended up buying a pair from av123.... though he told me over email that he was saving up for Summits. I have 2 other auditions planned for the next week or two.

It's a busy time, my friends.. but it's always good to help a fellow audiophile audition a speaker or a component not readily found locally.... afterall, I'd like the same courtesy extended to me.

In the end, I truly wish you guys could come over! If you're in the neighborhood... shoot me a pm and I'll gladly treat you to lunch here in Chicago and a demo at my place and we'll "window shop" at places where we can't afford anything! :D

Tempting offer. Do you accept B&W owners? lol. I'm going to be in the Chicago area for most of the summer! I'm from the North Shore. I gotta survive next week's final exams first. :)

HECK YEAH MAN!

I am actually an active member on a BW forum. I adore BW, especially the 803D and above. If I could have my way, I'd have Martin Logans, Sonus Faber, and BWs at my place for a change of pace whenever I feel like. I'm probably 15 minutes from you.

Well, my system is at school, but my dad has the 802+DCS Stack+Levinson amp combo in the Chicago area.

Well then, maybe I can come over and listen to his system and vice versa. :)

Yeah it would have to be at a time when my parents aren't around, otherwise I'll have to explain where you came from. They wouldn't understand, they'd think their son is nuts and you are casing the joint, preparing for a heist! Something might be doable. They can't relate to forums they are old.

LOL!

My parents disapprove of auditions too!

And they're right, I gotta be careful because these people could be scoping me out. So I dont give auditions to just anyone, they gotta appear genuine and what better way to find this out that through forums and checking on the post #, post history, and how they present themselves on the forums. If someone just comes on a forum and asks for an audition.... I stray away.

We'll work something out. Medschool is a little hectic right now, my Summer starts in 7 weeks... and last 2 weeks. :(

Keep in touch.

Well if they show up at your house on a forklift you better not let them near your ML's!
