but then again you have high end gear, and thats when the lines begin to blur between SS and tube......

It's something you have to hear to appreciate. I've been a solid state guy the whole way through, until I heard my first tube gear. It's very odd.... it's a different feel for the sound. For me, tube gear just adds what a lot of audiophiles refer to as "texture" to the music. It just sounds more realistic to me.

The reason why I mated a tube preamp to a tube amp is because of 3 things:
1. The preamp is closer to the source and handles such a delicate job of providing voltage gain (without current gain)... it was essential to hit it at this point and get tubes into this component.
2. Having a high-current, high-power tube amp is very very costly. We're talking atleast twice the cost of my Plinius SS Class A amp. That would mean I cannot go out to restaurants and there would be no exploration of Chicago whatsoever. This would also mean a very (let me emphasize "VERY") grumpy girlfriend. This is not something I wish upon myself.
3. Tube preamplifiers are very low maintenance. I don't have to bias the tubes and they last forever. Tubes in the preamp almost never blow.

i was thinking of pairing a darkvoice with a plinius, so as i was drinking a monster before i started playing CSS with my clan....i was like WTH...maybe theyll have a lower end power amp, i got on to one of their retailers...and the monster was all over the monitor....

i have a feeling im gonna have to go check out tube pre amps and such for myself...socal head-fi meets etc....Starting to realize that the deeper we go into this audio hole the more demoing we need to do

I think you're exactly 10 years my minor... you have a long way to go but you've started so so early. I think at 15, my speakers were the ones that came with my Packard Bell computer's monitor... no lie.

I didn't get into audio until I was in undergrad around the time I turned 21. Now at 25, I've learned quite a bit... but I still have decades of experience waiting for me.
 
I pretty much overcame every hurdle in computing, other than coding.....so i turned to somewhere else to learn stuff....

At 21 you had a decent job....probably why you evolved towards the uber high end stuff so fast.... and i jumped in the game a little early, but ever so slowly piecing together the pieces of the puzzle. Once i get a job this summer, i can evolve a little faster...if i want to put my money into this stuff, and the only things i probably have to pay for is oil and gas for my car :)
Anyways i think we need to get each others AIM/ MSN/ Xfire...before magnetic gets all over our asses for thread derailing to the nth power
 
At 21, I was still in undergrad and I did have a good paying summer job (and weekend job) where I worked as a nurse assistant at a rehab center. Once I went to med school, I got some scholarships and a lot of that is actually what pays for my audio gear. I just buy used books or by borrowing from friends who have done the rotation. I still learn the exact same, but I spend a whole lot less.

Currently, I'm jobless... lol!

Eh, I got a job, but as for buying electrostatics with my job, I don't think it will happen. Currently saving for 50" Sammy plasma. However, I did get some KLH fronts, yeah, they have 15s in them, say goodbye to the stock Onkyo HTIB sub. Will probably get 2 Dayton 12s to fill my small room with pounding bass.
 
I am getting a job in a few months now that I'm graduating from med school... finally I get paid for being at the hospital rather than have to pay tuition to be at the hospital.

Unless you get married, you will have so much money you wont know where to spend it first. Hint: get a cheap pad, not fancy digs. I expect to see a Torus soon after you start work :p
 
Bachelor pads ftw...a big house is pointless to me especially if im single, one room for my hobbies, aka the living room, a kitchen, and 1 bath and bedroom....perfect

and Finally you will be able to do wall insulation and stuff...schweet!
 
My mom makes me pay 200$ a month now that I am 18 :( Still, not bad considering I get 10/1 connection, and free food and all that.

Not only do I get food on the weekends when I go home to my parents' house.. but I also get a lot of free food (and a small allowance) from my girlfriend... she pays for whenever we go out to the restaurants around Chicago (sushi, steak, lobster).

I suppose she's my sugar momma... she's a pharmacist that just graduated and her pay just skyrocketed to 6 figures. :eek:
 
I'd rather be the one paying for things on the male/female relationship side of the spectrum, but when her pay is that high, eh, I'd let it slide now and then.

I guess I'm just a gentleman (idiot?).

I did have both hooked up, but i found it was a bit overkill, i took out the logitech sattelites, I'm using the Z5500 system, with the my old Klipsch 4.1 front speakers :)

By the time you finish pharm school (which is 8 years including undergrad), Oliver, I'll be several years practicing as an attending... hehehe... No biggie though, we can probably fly across the country and meet up to check out each other's systems! I'll make sure i'm one step ahead of you though, just for old time's sake. ;)

Up next: power conditioning, a rack to get my prized components off the carpet, better speaker cable, skiing ninja crossovers for the speakers, and possibly a subwoofer.

Actually, I bought mine off a seller on ebay who repairs faulty PM Ultra 5.1 and he does a very good job at that and mod it with cooling fans inside the sub. I even paid about US$100 for it to be shipped to Singapore where I live.

Yeap, gotta love the lucky pig and the Green Fairy!!! I heard that Absinth is banned in the US.
 
I started with a logitech z560 setup a few years back. Read some forums and came out 1700 dollars poorer for it. My ears are appreciative though, they certainly like it.



Subwoofer.
Oh god it is loud. Clean too. Spent lots of time making this, it's what's called a sonosub. It's designed to be huge, around 300L, in order to be tuned at 18hz. Because it is tuned so low, the port noise is below frequency of human hearing and the sub performs very well. Capable of pretty much flat 113dB from <20hz to 100hz. Other sonosubs are designed to go even lower, such as 110dB at 14hz with a 13hz tuning frequency. Mine isn't quick that deep at 18hz. Still though, it's yummy bass.

Speakers.
Me and my friend built 2 pairs of these speakers. Made the boxes, designed crossover and put everything together. High efficient 10" woofer with a coaxial compression driver. They model to do 114dB flat and are an absolute a joy to listen to. insanely loud and clean and detailed and pretty much everything I'd every want in a speaker. They image very very well and are just so fun to hear.
