In HS my buddy had a pair of Pioneers with 15's that were enormous and my little Cerwin Vega D-3s with a 10" woofer probably put out twice the volume at 5x the sound quality.

I'd actually say all of them are crap but my dad has a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls with 15" woofers and they'll definitely impress if making your heart palpitate is your primary acoustic goal.

Trust me, the sub barely moves on my Dad's and it wow, it just wows me, even with his huge living room.
 
Looking at the specs it may be rated to go down to 25 Hz but it's not exactly rated within a certain dB level. And yes, I have found that old 12 to 15" woofers in speakers don't actually make as much bass as a subwoofer does. Not to mention if you use a subwoofer then for the actual treble will use all of your amp's power and not be hogged by a giant woofer.

They do look almost identical to the B&W 805 and in fact they are using the same model number, 805.

The actual appearance of the speaker might not be a protectible trademark because it has a function. When something actually has a function and is not just for brand identification it is less likely to be protected by trademark law. If I recall correctly, the curved shape of the speaker cabinet, the bullet in the driver, the kevlar, the tubes behind the driver, placement of the drivers, and the golf ball pattern on the bass port are all functional, so they are probably only protected by patent law, if at all. I'm really not sure. Just a little trivia tidbit for ya.

It is more for midrange bass sort of, still it will add, right now my fronts SUCK, no bass at all, and my room isn't big at all. The drivers make all sorts of movement but no bass, still sound alright though.
 
Heh, i feel ya on that one...my RTI4's are great mid-high but they SUCK at going to mid-bass and lower...and you miss a great part of the live experience without the chest thumping bass IMO

I love my R150s, but those are my 2.0 system on the computer using the HQ out from the AV710 using the Wolfsen DAC to a Pioneer VSX401 receiver. If I get these speakers like I want I may get this: http://www.amazon.com/AudioSource-A...?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1197335105&sr=1-29

For right now my fronts and center are just the default ones out of the 7.1 Onkyo system.

With these large KLHs I will have to move my computer desk around, probably the best I can do since it isn't limited by the short cord anymore, I found my good extension cord I think, it is same gauge as the surge protector, and it is black YAY!!!

Also got to get ready for the 50" Sammy Plasma I want, too bad after this purchase I will only have 420$ towards it :( I am getting my 50c raise next week so it is all cool, just hope I can keep this job... My quality scores are staying the same, and it is almost the last week of training :( They are a 50, where as 70 is passing I believe, and 80 is the highest :(


I am supposed to pick them up tomorrow, too bad he won't go lower on his price, but I mean other than the corners they look brand new, and it is just the hard plastic covering so it can be glued back on easily, not the vinyl crap that rips off the LDF :O

not much sodering needed...just a manual, me, my brain (which got a 69% on that test i was talking about :mad:) and a couple PCB's

most complex it will get its getting the fuse and all hooked up to the power supply unit, then i have to soder the RCA connectors and the optical in.....its gonna be fun freezing my fingers off in my garrage casing and assembling this thing, and the headroom on upgradeability should be awesome...dual DAC's in parallel, maybe mod the caps, cleaner PSU, zapfilter....possibilities are fun to dream about
 
Ok, I got them, cannot turn them up until tomorrow when the 'rents aren't home. Currently got them on my Onkyo, can't wait to get some nice source material, a little rough, but nothing some Sharpie can't fix, and some Gorilla Glue. I cannot wait to give these things a workout!!!!
I was at the guy's house, and WOW, with a older Pioneer receiver these things REALLY MADE some noise. Quality of the noise is to be figured out, just give me a day.

i hate this as much as you do...cant push that nice ear, wall pounding, volume level when the parents are in the vicinity...just get this feeling that theyre gonna tell me to turn it down, or play something better

My mom and dad both are 80's and under fans....i on the other hand are a big alternative, modern rock fan

good thing i have my HD600's

Yeah, next item on my agenda is probably a Little Dot MK2++. Tubular dood!!! and only around 200 dollars, I think it is 235 shipped or maybe less, but not until I get my plasma. Still have a pair of barely used SR-80s waiting for them, My HD485s are fine off of AV710. I will start working 2nd shifts so I will have the day to f*** around with them during the day.
 
Eh, im more of a solid state guy...though tube rolling sounds like great fun to me, and they make great space heaters in the winter...ahhh so thats how pini keeps warm on those cold chicago winters ;)

I'm a solid state guy as well. Unless of course we are talking guitar amps, in which case it is all about the tubes. Love my Mesa Boogie!
 
I'll be the first to admit it:

I've never sat down and compared tubes with solid states so I do not know the difference in sound. You could explain it all you want, but it'll never be the same as me actually listening with my own ears. I look forward to the day I get to listen to a tube amp, actually I was hoping on getting a tube headphone amp just so I might be able to hear the difference and the traits there. Who knows...

and you can go "im cable hiding damnit" in your head of course :D

and pini, how does that work...you pair tube pre amp with a solidstate (im pretty sure) power amp...whats the resuling sound? extra emphasis on the mids? im slightly confused
 
I just aquired a Sony SA-W3000 powered sub and a set of SDAT SB-E70 floor speakers... for free :D it's a long story that involves a Microsoft mouse and a spade flush.
And my wife just bought me a pair of Insignia NS-B2111 bookshelves, she picked 'em out too... good choice for the $50 she spent if you ask me. Ten dollars says she picked 'em because they looked "pretty" ;) she has good taste in design then.
I'll post more pics when I get everything set up.

The Insignia's have been a big hit. Most people love them for their sound and their design. I purchased a pair about a year ago as a mess around set of speakers and I have just a few things to say about them:

1. They are incredibly tollerant to cranked volume. You can turn it up past distortion and they make smells as if their are blowing but when you turn it back down, they still sound fine! Amazing.
2. I'm not too happy with the tweeter. It is really lacking compared to the other set of speakers I have been using for the past 5 years. The tweeter sounds too mellow, basically "warm" or perhaps just the speaker is all about mids.
3. The main woofer can move too easily. Being ported and all, it goes flying in and out at half volume. I want more volume at times but they really can't go any further up. I read that most people stuff socks in the port to dampen this effect so that it sounds a little faster and punchier than what I had described. Once putting socks in, it helps visually (cone movement) and sounds faster but definitely starts lacking bass when this all happens.

For 50 dollars I guess you can't get anything perfect. But sometimes I wonder what'd it have been like if I got a different pair of speakers under 100 dollars like the Infinity Primus 150's. I couldn't help but notice that Frys as selling a pair of floorstanding Polk R50's for under 200 dollars for the pair shipped and taxed and everything. Good deal for Polk, floorstanding, dual woofers in each speaker, and a decently good looking speaker. Can't say I've listened to it but I am almost certain it'd sound better than the Insignias.

I live alone, so there's really no-one to complain about it.. :D

But anyways, just went shopping and bought a blue mat. Gonna throw it right there.

They also had another set of infinities..forgot which, bookshelves that were running for about 220....really good bookshelves too, not on display @ the fry's i went to, and IMO fry's is prolly the best place for beginning-middle of the road hi-fi gear...especially if you wait for deals

And the last time i messed with woofers? well you dont wanna know....lets just say that i had foam pads, an exacto knife.....and the end result was hot glue all over the copper coil in one of the woofers ;)

The Polk R50 floor speakers definitely do look great, and they do sound good to me as well... I heard a pair a few weeks back and I was impressed by the price/performance ratio, that of course being $60 each.

well that works too....

but im thinking if the home sound for Solid is flat, bass and treble extensions and tubes are described as warm mid range emphisizers.....what would happen when you mix em as you did in your setup

but then again you have high end gear, and thats when the lines begin to blur between SS and tube......


I talk myself in circles, maybe i should just get on a plane to chicago? :p
