Yes I have heard them stock. They suck stock sorry. I don't even like them closed with Larry's modifications but Open = WOW

They need more than just recabling. I would suggest buying an 880 or 990 instead of just recabling a 770..

If you want THE bitchin gaming can send them to Larry for Darthification. He won't do Open unless he feels like it and puts one up on the FS page.

yeah.. but I am a self professed basshead and I personally think they are "ok" in this dept (personally.. I wish they bassed more ) except for a few bass notes it doesn't hit particularly well. I haven't heard an open set of cans that can handle the music I listen to in this department. (electro, speed garage, minimal tech, etc) all bass driven. I am not like most head-fi'ers.. I am not listening to classical, rock, etc... so our needs might be different. All I want to do is tighten it up a little more. If you say the bass is improved opening them up, recabling, or woodying them.. then it will tempt me.. but I don't want to lose any bass impact just to gain some soundstage or added fidelity. I feel they already have great soundstage. Even the weakpoint the the 770s (the midrange) doesn't bother me so much with my music... probably cause I EQ' it though my DEQ2496... but if I can improve it w/out EQ'ing so much then I am open to go that route. What amplification are you using with your boobies?

thanks for the info...

Darthing the 770s only improves the bass. If anything, there's more of it. He doesn't make them all polite and AKG-like lol. They still POUND like no other headphone. That's why I prefer Open b/c it lessens the sound pressure. 770s bass is slamming in large part due to the tight seal they get. It's like a pressurized bass container.

That's why I sold mine. I want a set of 990's.

Hi Magnetik, I may be able to offer my opinions and hopefully that can be of some help.

I have the DT770pro. I agree with you totally, it's got ok bass, but it's still a little bass shy... lean so to speak. The slightly recessed mid's didn't get to me when they were my main cans, but after using the headphile modded beyer's it's hard to go back to the stocks.

Now, I have the skybeyers and the darthbeyers V2.

Darth Beyers:
These tame the highs, bring out the mids (really quite nice now), and have boatloads of mid bass (I can only compare it to two sub's pointing at your ears). The midbass was too much for me, so I slightly modded them by plugging up the holes with adhesive putty. Now they are great! Soooooooooooooo sweet. They have about the same quality of bass as the stock ones, execpt MUCH MORE! I'm very impressed with these.

Skybeyers:
Now, here's where the hard part comes in. You say you are not affected by the mids on the stock DT770pro's..... but you want more bass.
The Skybeyers are closer to the stock DT770pro (even though they are DT770 2005) than the Darth's. They have more highs and less mids than the Darth's, but still not to the point of the stocks. However, these things shine in the bass department.
Have you ever seen the Headroom graph of the new DT770 2005? Yea... that's what these sound like. The low end bass is soooooooooooooo sweet, I can't even convey how nice it is! These things don't drop off in the bass, whereas the Darth's do (though this is all relative, comapred to almost any other phone the Darth's have a huge amount of low end bass). The Bass is quicker, less bloat, more slam, goes lower, tighter, more detailed. Basically they are very comparable to the PS-1, execpt with the beyer house sound over the grado house sound, oh... and they cost about half the price and are comfy. Again, without the holes plugged up I didn't like the sound, all my comments are with all 4 holes plugged up.

Recently I've come to prefer the Darth's in general because the midrange is just better and less highs. However, if I am in a DDR/techno/bass mood, the Skybeyers are the cans to go to! I just can't convey the sweet low end bass.
If you want a headphone that's similar to your DT770pro, better all around, and has MUCH better bass, the skybeyer is it.

Hope this helps,
~Drew

Thanks for the detailed info!

Skybeyers sounds like my choice... have you had a chance to compare them to the Darth V3's? I may just get mine Darthed and end up buying a new set to get Sky'ed. I have been searching high and low for the perfect cans for listening to my kind of music ... but haven't had any luck.. these seem like the right fit (for the price). So.. the Sky's are basically a 2005 version of the 250ohm 770s modded by Larry? What kind of price are we looking at with normal wood.. bout 5 bills? Also since I am powering them on a PPA v2, steps, etc, would you get the 600ohm version or stick with the 250?

Also.. do I have to wait for Larry to put some up on sale or could I request a quote, pay, and just wait for them to come in?

Yea, they are the DT770 2005 modded by headphile.com.
Last I checked, the mods cost the same price as the Darth's. You provide him with the headphones, so you can choose either 32ohm, 250ohm, or 600ohm. That means you could even go all out and order a custom color one from beyer's manufacture site, though that would be quite pricey.

Personally, I don't know of anyone who has used the 600ohm DT770, but other's have reported that they prefer the 600ohm DT880 and DT990 better than the other versions for sound quality. I can't say though, I havn't had a chance to listen to any of those.

People who have used the 600ohm version say they really need an amp with a high voltage gain. I'm not sure what type of voltage gain you have on your amp.

And no, I havn't had a chance to compare them to the V3's. I was told that the V2's used a special (limited) product inside the cups, and the V3's now use a different (though comparable) product. I think skylab said the V3's were very similar, just with slightly less bass.

You may want to contact Larry and see if he expects to have any on his deals page anytime soon. If not though, you can just order them the same way you would the Darth's.

A little more info can be found here: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=221472
Skylab may be getting his soon, so you may also want to be on the lookout for what he has to say between the darth's and sky's.

I have a pair of HD580s I should be getting by next week. I got a decent deal on them, with everything. I have an Alien DAC kit coming by next week sometime and next week, I'm hoping to order all the parts for a second cmoy and I'm going to try my hand at a PIMETA. :D

I really dig the DIY aspect of this hobbie. I figure with the Alien DAC on the way and the 240S and HD580s sitting on my desk, I could use something a step above my wonky cmoy (that for some reason, hates earbuds, but loves cans). The 770s are on my list of cans to try as a lot of my stuff is bass heavy. Once I feel comfortable with those DIYs, I want to try like a Monica 2 or something and a PPA to go with my cd players.

I'm all excited now :p

The 580's are a great can. Very laid back, relaxing, and smooth. That, and they are very comfortable. I prefer the Grado sound to them, for music, but I still often use them for the exponentially bettter comfort. Enjoy them :).

Not a big fan of the HD580's myself, but lots of people love them. You will probably be happy with the purchase, and if not... they are easy to sell. ;)

especially since they're getting harder to find new!

but I love mine... I sold my HD595's after getting my HD580's

Last addition has come. I think I might be done with my headphone upgrading/searching!

Try populating R5, with something between 50 and 120 ohm, in the Cmoy to get it to play nice with earbuds. If you don't already have it, that is. :)

Ha!
If only it was the easy, and inexpensive!
:D

The nice thing is having friends with w1000s, k701s, and dt880s to play with. Helps keep some of the urges down. I do love the 650s the most from what I've heard though.

I'm just trying to avoid the pull of vinyl now, and the speaker/amp upgrades ;)

Can I just ask why you use such expensive earbuds for an ipod? I assume you're using a lossy codec because with Apple Lossless you'd barely get a full album on a Shuffle, & I really can't see why you'd want or even need such good earbuds for such a bad source, it seems such a waste.

the shuffle is actually known for its audio quality... plus at 256~320kbps you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a lossy codec and ALAC or something... unless you had a very nice setup, which wouldent be very portable anyway would it :p

This is kind of embarrassing, but I think it was just a battery issue. I changed the battery yesterday and now it works fine with everything.

I guess I had the single battery in there longer than I thought while I was testing and everything. Man, is my face red.

I actually used to use an Iriver h320 with flac for my portable. I stopped taking transit to work though so I sold that off but am keeping the UM2s because it's hard to drop in quality once you've lived with the good side :)

The shuffle does sound great also, though I have to use that attenuator for every source I've tried so far. I wish the UM2s were just a little less sensitive.

I actually converted most of my FLAC to mp3 not that long ago (256bit). It was just getting to be a hassle to deal with looking at different players only for codec reasons over quality.

I've got the CDs anyways, so I don't need the FLAC as a backup.

a pair of oelhbach recabled hd580s coming in a few days, but for now, and for the last 2 years:

This is portable I tell you, it fits in my pocket alright!

Alright, two pockets...

What lurks within, & comparison with an Apple remote (which is about the same size as a Shuffle IIRC). You can tell I don't do a lot of jogging.

My Uncle visited today, but left before I had a chance to try out his new Senny HD-280 Pros, been thinking about getting myself a pair for when I'm in my room.

Nice setup. I've been wanting a MD player.
I've been toying with the idea of upgrading to one of the Hi-MD ones that can record in uncompressed PCM as well as compressed ATRAC, but TBH I don't know if I'd really notice the difference, because ATRAC at the standard 292KBit/s is pretty hard to distnguish from the original, especially considering that I only listen to MDs on the move, not in the controlled environment of my room. Plus I doubt that I'd be able to find a Hi-MD recorder that is a.) as small as my current one & b.) as well made as my current one. I'm still thinking about it though...

EDIT: okay, I could definately go for the MZ-RH1, but it costs an absolute fortune compared to the £50 I paid for my MZ-R90 second-hand last year. I suppose that's because the R90 was rather behind-the-times last year, whilst the RH1 is still the up-to-date flagship model.

So, uh, I am officially freaking excited! I won a tasty source upgrade. It is a CD-Player, a nice one. I don't know what it is yet, they won't tell me :p. Rumor has it that it will arrive the 17th. I am way excited to find out what it is. I am looking forward to dtiching my computer as a source though. I have a healthy collection of CD's that just get ripped and then forgotten about.

Shure E4g (im not sure if its the G or the C) which i got off some kid at school for 100$

My beginners HD-650 setup, HD-A1 is the source and the microamp (obviously) is the amplification. Looking to add a new DAC soon even though the HD-A1 sounds great due to quality construction/parts. I love this setup so far and am pretty excited because I know I'm just starting to hear the potential of the 650s. My friend bought my old 595s and now he's already talking about upgrading.. so the curse begins for another ;) and yes.. I know my camera sucks.

your flash and photo skills might suck (no offense :D ) but your headphones are still laughing at me :p HD-DVD...that recently bought, why didnt you go blu ray?

Yeah I am... didn't think I'd need to point out the HD-A1 on hardocp :) I went HD-DVD because of price, picture quality and I like the software library. Honestly I'd have a blu-ray player under there too but I don't have the cash right now. That and the HD-A1 is great at DVD upscaling and CDs, I think it has a Burr Brown 1755 DAC (model # might be off) and rock solid construction. So even if HD DVD goes under I'll still have a great machine. The machine on the top is a panny s77, it pretty much only gets used for DVD-Audio and even then the x-fi does a better job. And I am a pretty bad photographer but I'm in a basement apartment with no light and crappy point and shoot camera so it's not all my fault :D

hello hd580! you sound great!

Funny, I just bought some SR-60's. Fun stuff. Much more fun to listen to than my hd280s, still breaking in tho.

New source is here, amp is back from Mister X, and I am a happy man. Of course, pics of the new setup:

My CD collection is modest, but it will grow, now that I am no longer using a Computer as my source. However, everything sounds great. I threw on Thriller as soon as I got my amp hooked up, and just grinned from ear to ear. It sounds GREAT!

picked up this stand at Compusa yesterday.. they had store fixtures sale for
the closings and these were $3.00. They had a ton of them. They are pretty heavy duty.. I
might paint it black or put some padding on it.
