Phenom II 1090t, Gigabyte MA-770 UD3 mobo, 4x2GB 1066mhz OCZ Reaper ram, 6 hard drives, 4 internal 2 external for 4TB of space, DVD drive, Corsair 750TX power supply, Radeon 5850 with Aftermarket Arctic Accelero V2 with 2 Antec 80mm fans attached to cool it, both of which are attached to the heatsink via twist ties

I ran into a snag fitting enough power into an mATX case to power my pair of GTX 480s last year and I ran out of time to get the machine ready for a LAN I was attending. This is the result, enjoy :)

I love ghetto mods! Surprisingly ghetto mods are actually pretty solid. Too bad I didn't take pictures of mine.

I'm fortunate to have silently swept all of my getto work under the rug years ago. My test rigs on the other hand are... interesting. I'll have to remember to take pics.

I currently have a fan held by a zip tie and wires from a fan power extension cord. (Well, I didn't have anything else at that time…)

Maybe not very ghetto, certainly not food stamp worthy, but thought I'd throw it up here anyway.

Doing some testing with an old Google Mini server. First problem: NOISY.

Fix: Mount Intel 775 HSF:

You can see the old copper profile and radial fan in the rear.

Second problem. Screws from old cooler too long.

Fix: Used whatever I could find as spacers:

More problems, SATA connectors turned sideways - only angle SATA cables I had was the wrong way. Aaargh! Well, unmount the HDD and plop it down on the other side, and slap another HDD on top of it for good measure. PSU only has one molex, so using a splitter.

One thing is for sure, this thing won't mount in a rack as a 1U anymore. :p

meh it is alright i guess... it was sort of a mess trying to build it...took awhile and I nearly threw it out at one point. i learned things... like don't buy pine or more notably don't try to stain pine as it sucks... i also learned don't leave pine shelf to dry out in the hot socal sun (as the heat made sap come out.. this is when i was going to toss it..but i cleaned it off with some mineral spirits and put another coat on then brought it into the garage to dry and no more sap issue so far sooooo yeah).


but it works i guess.

OMG!!! I haven't seen but maybe 5% of this thread, but so far YOU WIN the [H]ard award in my opinion, being 100% about hardware and 0% about aesthetics! No one would EVER think there is a beast inside that... thing

Not the most ghetto mod out there but after having installed my Accelero Twin Turbo onto my 5850 and finding out the fans were no longer functional, I decided to slap on 2 120mm fans. Zip ties are like the duct tape of the computer world.

It isn't easy to tell from these angles, but the 12cm fan on the case window is the mod. The circle I cut was... well, not a circle. The wounds are covered in all those decals surrounding the fan.

Don't drink and dremel.

If I had photos of the hot-glued and ziptied cpu coolers I'd post em, but I'm sure you can imagine what it looks like (hey, I had an Intel socket and an AMD cooler, what choice did I have?)

Okay, first, this is my arm/elbow padding for extended comfort during extended gaming/studying/working sessions. the pads are those intended for use with toddlers so they dont get hurt while bumping all the tables. got the idea because of my toddler and because the table edge was rather sharp lol :D




And this, when the main crossfire card started to overheat because of Texas weather i grabbed my Dremel, tool set, double sided foam tape and took a trip to fry's... the rest is 30°C cooler at full load :p

The improved cooling device with trimmed intake and exhaust for noise reduction and better airflow :D

Highwind gets 5 out of five for having a octopus in his case and for his drunk dremaling.

Kromix you get a 4 out 5 for lack of ducktape or postal tape, IDK about the texas heat, My room stays 70 all summer and 60ish in winter.

the arm rest is very 'un-dodgy / ghetto'.
if you had used belly button lint or toilet paper rolled into a used garbage bag and gaffer-taped it to the desk edge, i'd be impressed.

you get some points on the trimmed exhaust grill tho it's obvious you've used some sort of rotary tool for the cutting (the trimmed edges look to clean). again be more impressed with cutting if more 'conventional' tools used, like a hammer and maybe a chisel if you were rich.

lol! my living area is set to 80F and the computer room happens to be the sun room.... :(


i actually started a flat head and a hammer, then moved to snips, ended with Dremel because the metal plate was bending too much :D

and in regards of duck tape, i got cardboard and duct tape lining the back end of the desk so the mouse cord doesn't get damaged :p


forgot to add the keyboard stands to make it more angled... cardboard and black duct tape

Haven't done anything like that in ages.

Back in the day though, I rubber-banded an old 486 heatsink and fan with some of that white thermal paste underneath it to my Voodoo 1 board to help overclock it more.

I can't remember the specifics, but as I recall the Voodoo1 clocked MUCH higher with a 486 HSF than with nothing at all :p

Not sure if this qualifies, but I converted an old shelf unit to a standup desk...

added some caster to roll it, used velcro to attack a light for the desktop area, and a whole mess of electric tape to hide wires.

Actually, that is pretty ghetto, esp. considering the size of the fans relative to the card... do those not vibrate/buzz like crazy?

Regarding my octopus... well, I have no excuse, I suck at cable management, but I'm glad a couple of you got a laugh.

the cardboard taped on the table are to raise the back of the keyboard just enough to clear the base of the monitor and allow for a better angle on the keyboard. :D you see, the keyboard legs stand on the taped cardboard, i had to move the keyboard down to allow vision of such aesome table mod... lol

...makes me wonder if I still have my 'keyboard stick' floating around somewhere...

Same thing, only I had to drill holes in the stick because the keyboard kept falling off of it!
