poor mans 1200 Watt power supply. Spliced the signal wires from the 2 front mounted psus into the rear psu so they would turn on with the machine. :)

'Tarkin', my fileserver. After 3 years in the garage with no power, Tarkin has been upgraded.. again.

I don't have any pics from his start-of-life, but he was originally a 4u XT compatible machine. The case was gutted and refitted for ATX, and Tarkin got upgraded to an AMD K6-2 450 based workstation. He was obsoleted by a 1.333333333333ghz p3, and spent a year or two in hibernation until he got refitted with a P43.0ghz (underclocked to 2.4, natch). This was obsoleted by my roomate getting married, which caused me to flee in terror. That was three years ago - earlier this week, Tarkin recieved a new brain transplant, and is now a Core 2 Duo @ 2.66ghz, with 8gb of ddr2 and 1.7tb of disk. He will be in the rack in the garage providing file services to the house, minecraft services (map in ramdisk, woo!), and youtube and mp3 services to the garage. LOOK ON HIM AND DESPAIR.

The front fans - #1 is screwed in from the backside of the removable front panel. #2 is half screwed in, half floating, and is ziptied to #3. #3 is zip tied to elastic hairbands, and is about 1/16" away from the optical drive. The 80mm near the drives is ziptied off to crossbars in the case.

Got a bunch of random crap from a friend, put all the hard drives into a single computer. Power supply didn't exactly have enough connectors so I have a bunch of molex Y-splitters in there.

It works! Also, has two PCI 2xIDE cards in it.

250GB, 100GB, 80GB, 80GB, 40GB, 40GB, 20GB, and 3 optical drives.

This is my HP G62-130SL notebook.
It has a 320GB drive but I needed more space so I removed the DVD drive and I've added my WD My passport 500GB  :D

Hi guys...I thought you'd appreciate pics of the ongoing "Ghetto Mod" of poor my old EMonster 600 which I am now using to run XP pro SP3 for downloading and streaming videos etc....
Here's a pic of the inside. I added an extra fan because it was overheating now that I put in a few more cards. more ram (boosted it to the max that this mother board takes 512mb), and a better CPU (P3 750MHZ). So I took a plastic paint can lid and got some electrical wire and tie wired it to an old twisted piece of metal that I found at a construction site which is also twist wired to the frame.. Then I zip tied the fan I bought at a Good Will Thrift store to the paint can lid and tied that to whatever I could in the computer frame and to the piece of scrap metal. Notice the white trash bag twist ties on the left and right of the fan? Nothing but the best here!!!. Also notice where I put the 160 gig IDE hard drive lower right. I cut a strap from an old back pack, ran it through the frame and strapped the hard drive in place. Cool huh? and REAL classy.. Now notice the front of the computer? well I ripped the floppy drive out and ripped out the front USB 1.0 and serial connector (at the very bottom) leaving just holes and drilled the 4 big holes in the top to allow better ventilation. I also ripped out the original DVD drive and put in a better one. (Still an old Sony drive but hey at least its a burner...not like the DVD rom drive that came with the system )All this is temporary for now until I get the cash to rip the guts outa it and put in all new stuff..(read: a couple of years from now :D) still I figured I'd post it here.:p

Ok, I ran into a problem. Since the phantom's power supply intakes from them bottom of the case i couldn't put it on the floor because of the carpet, but the case is to tall to sit on the desk (or at least it is for me) My desk came with a little metal plate for a case to sit on but it was WAYYY to small for the phantom......sooo i made this for the phantom to sit on. Its a piece of scrap wood i had sitting around with 6 2.5" screws. I painted it black with some old black paint i had laying around... Stealthy ghetto mod ? or no ghetto mod ??
Why didn't you take out the screws? They're totally unnecessary, and they're causing damage to the floor.

Alright so I have 2 here, the first not being all that ghetto.

I needed a way to switch between 2 audio sources, and I thought it'd be nice to have some volume control too since one of them was the xbox. I came up with this. The housing is actually milled out of an old PIII heatsink, and the audio jacks are de-soldered from an old soundcard. It still works perfectly, but I don't really have a use for it anymore.

I think this one qualifies though. My room kept getting wayyyy too hot (tiny apt room in NY, and I'm from WA) since my graphics card put out prodigious amounts of heat. My solution was to make a cardboard box that would fit over the back of the computer, and pull all of the heat out to be exhausted outside. I have to say it worked beautifully, and painted black it didnt look too ridiculous either. I used some tubing from an AC to vent the air outside.

Those mods aren't getto enough. They both make too much sense & are too well executed. Try again.

Well that heat extractor box thing seemed pretty ghetto to me at the time - nothing but cardboard, duct tape and paint. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I think your biggest downfall was that you made sure the box matched the computer. Would have been better if it was a Fruit Loops box.

We should start an improvised mods thread that aren't quite that "ghetto" but are nonetheless interesting.

nah, you can't have a ghetto thread without someone throwing out some not quite ghetto additions. If all the runners of races where the fastest in the world, after a while you'd have pretty boring races.

OK, long story, buddy has a hair up to run some fancy video editing warez, researches the minimum system requirements and buys a GTX285 off craigslist.

Shows up at my place with said 285 and this POS DELL he got from his dad...its an E521 AM2 4400+ setup but the bullshit DELL proprietary form factor with the expansion slots on the wrong side leave no room for a double slot card on the single PCIe slot...it is in the NB sink below and the CPU sink beside.

I try to talk him out of it but he is adamant, so we cut some fingers off the NB sink, then cut and bend on the CPU sink. Took two iterations to get the CPU sink to mount flat as we actually had to carve on the plastic AM2 sink mount after bending the aluminum out of the way. I thought it was all for naught BUT IT FUCKING WORKED! drivered up and loaded 100% on everything...I was floored.

ghetto as fuck

Will be posting pix of this as soon as I figure out how to make it look more crappy...

So my external CD drive went and died on me about a week or so ago... FleaBay and a tip from a fellow [H]er helped me find a kit that allowed me to use a lappy DVD burner with a USB cable. Case was included.

Trimmed the bezel on my drive of choice with a pair of (sturdy) scissors, but the case doesn't look that shabby yet. Any suggestions? Can post pix of entire assembly if needed... but I was gonna wait on that till I figured out what to use to make it look more rigged...

*crickets*

suggestions plz = very yes?
I think the whole point of ghetto mods is that they are primarily done with the intent of fixing something, and the ghetto-ness is an unintentional side-effect. Trying to make it look more ghetto seems...wrong?

Yeah *sigh* but if I did that it would fit in with everything else around my house that much better ;)

Mebbe I'll just see if I can get wood grain contact paper (shelf liner, same stuff) at Wal Mart next time I go.

Steve, I don't want to hate, but how can you call that ghetto when you have a nice house, a picket fence and flowers in your pic?

I didn't take pictures when I had my ghetto configuration setup - but I did get to show it off to the Verizon repairman.

I replaced this:

with this:

Verizon said it was going to take two weeks to get someone out - it did happen to be in the middle of the worst ice storm we'd had in forever in Dallas on Superbowl Weekend. And I'll be damned if I was missing the Superbowl - which was taking place in the ice about 20 minutes south of me.

Power supply of their unit was dead - it output 48v. I used my 30v dual power supply at 24v/side to make a 48v supply to run the ONT until they came and replaced their bad power supply. Minimal reroute of their wiring to my good power supply. This is what happens when you get snowed in with no TV or internet and you happen to have a power supply that meets the spec for the ONT.

Air duct I made for an old PC. Made from a file folder and tape - still in excellent shape when I retired the mobo and such.
