Playstation 4 Rumours

Early adopters always are but we get to play longer. I by all my consoles at launch I want to play, sitting and waiting is no fun. Could die tomorrow and never have done the things I wanted to so fuck it why not

I think they need to hit 399, and I see Wii U next Christmas at 299/250 for basic unit.

Yeah, every time I try to fight the urge to be there on launch day and I always cave in.

If I am not there on launch day I always cave within a few weeks.
$399 though, man I don't know. That is pushing it. Add a game to it and tax etc, and you are at $500, and damn you could get a gun for that!

The phones that cost $500 are sold for a profit and not subsidized by the manufacturer. Consoles have a different business model.

I understand this. The PS3 was $500+ and heavily subsidized. To think that this new console will be $300 or anything close to that is insane. When was the last time a new console was cheaper then the outgoing models price?
At best, they will start off at $500. And I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it starts off higher then that.

Regardless of launch features, I will wait until at least mid generation. The trend these console people are taking is to release, and re-release at least once with more efficient hardware and cheaper prices. I'll wait for the more efficient, likely smaller, and cheaper version!

PS3 was allot but remember bluray was expensive then. The Wii U uses a bluray but they don't allow movie playback so its cheap. This is the beauty of the leaps in manufacturing process since 2005 if they charge what they charged back then they would be making a ton of profit on current stuff they get allot more per wafer on all these chips now. 500 for either is a death stroke these days, the other way they COULD pull this of is subsidising them with live or plus. Microsoft has been testing this already with those 99 dollar Xbox deals. Just a thought

The player licence was something like $12 for a player, might be cheaper now (like DVD has become)... Seems kind of cheap not to pay a bit more than $10 (maybe less than) to add extra functions...

No way either a new Xbox or PS4 hit for less than $399. $349 at the lowest. Taking into account inflation and the ever declining value of the dollar, too.

I can't be the only person but I never play movies in my consoles. Stand alone players are cheaper and more reliable. I've had to replace console ROM drives and in the long run the stand alone will outlast the console drive. So I'd rather not have it play movies and I love that the xbox allows for installs wish every system was that way the ps3 does too but different the only system I've ever owned that never had a ROM drive go is the Dreamcast my launch unit still plays shit yeah its noisy but it works like the day I bought it.

I just want to play games, could care less about the other crap, apps are OK some of them.

Forgot to mention I was talking about the drive price not the license. The drives are cheap now.

to me, price doesn't matter because i don't have enough time to buy consoles when they first come out. i always have games i need to get caught up on while i'm waiting for consoles to drop to $300. by then, the kinks are usually worked out (rrod was partially addressed with halo 3 edition console, mine got the e74 error but was still under warranty) and with my ps3 i got the uncharted 3 bundle which was, for me, a great value.

i personally think that if you want to play the consoles when they first come out, and have to put in an extra few days worth of work to buy it at launch, why the fuck not? also, why do people care which console i buy or if i pay for live or not?

its hard to guess with the way markup works in different industries. even if they cost nintendo $5/piece to buy and another 5 to license, who's not to say that wouldn't end up in another $50 bucks to the retail price

Yuh, Yeah!
I'm a launch party kind of guy. I always buy consoles at launch, as long as there is 2-3 games I really want.

PS3 was the first and only launch I did NOT participate. No games and FIVE-HUNDRED-NINETY-NINE-DOLLARS! We better not see that again.

Funny enough, the launch PS3 ended up being the best one since they scrapped the PS2 backwards compatibility. It was still ungodly expensive, but in the long run I'm glad I got one.

I agree it's insane to think it will launch for only $300, but it's not going to cost as much as PS3. It's really not using any "new" technology like Bluray, and the AMD APU is reportedly giving excellent yields. PS3 started out at $499 and $599, but it reportedly cost over $700 to manufacture.

$399 is realistic. I think $499 is the worst case scenario, not best.

Ironic enough. They priced themselves out of the market and had to scramble to find ways to drop the price. If they did it right the first time, we probably wouldn't have had 20 billion different versions of the box, each with less features than the previous. The things you have to do to save face....

Oh well, Krazy Ken is gone, so maybe his replacement isn't a complete muppet. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Best but least reliable. Replaced the BD drive in mine twice and then YLOD fixed then same thing again two months ago, had to buy a slim. Was cheaper for me to buy a used slim ps2 and ps3 than to keep repairing that one. Lost my 360 right before new slim launched have that now. Yet my NES, Dreamcast, Wii and GameCube, Genesis and 3 modded original Xbox's still work. Let's hope for some return to better reliability.

Very different. Plus thanks to the rise in popularity and increasingly powerful nature of phones in general , they are a very powerful business model right now.

So again I state , at a $500 price point (if that's what Sony ends up doing) then they will be in deep shit.

It's all about launch title games if they want me to buy day 1. I wasn't impressed with Wii-U's and there's still not one sitting on my shelf.

I love reading comments on other sites about backwards compatibility. Game consoles were never backwards compatible until this latest generation of consoles (Wii->Gamecube, PS3->PS2, 360->Xbox) and now it should be a forced feature? It's all about new, good games, less about features and hardware, IMO.

Honestly, backwards compatibility might convince me to buy a PS4, as there are a bunch of PS3 games I'd like to play. So features matter for some.

But if they don't include it, it's not like I'll be mad. I'll just stick with my PC, which has plenty of games.

everyone said the same thing with the PS3, and it sold millions

the same thing will happen with the ps4. It WILL be $500 and higher and they will sell millions.

I'll be happy to eat my crow if it comes in cheaper, but it aint gonna happen. :)

There is nothing in the leaked specs to indicate it will be that expensive.

The only way it costs over $500 is if the 4GB GDDR5 was a place holder for 8GB of DDR3/4 on an Ultra Wide 1028-bit I/O.

I read someone report Sony is still considering upgrading to 8GB. Which from what I've also read would be incredibly expensive to do using GDDR5 because of the heat and added motherboard complexity of 16 memory chips. I think the biggest they come is in 4Gbit.

Didn't Sony come out and say that the original PS3 price point was too high? I have to think both MS and Sony will be looking at $399 as their target for release. Higher than the WiiU (justifiable due to better specs) but not so high as to completely turn a good chunk of the market off of buying one at launch.

I agree. There will be at least one model of the PS4 that will be $399. Probably a base version and then a deluxe for $450-500.

I remember the huge debates that raged about backcompat when the 360 and the PS3 came out. The fact that fat PS3 was compatible with PS2 was supposed to be its saviour, and yet I doubt it made any difference at all. Meanwhile the 360 was able to run a lot of games in almost perfect emulation mode. But again, not why people bought the console.

Selling a dongle for last gen games (PS3 on a chip) might be the best possible solution. Anyone who really wants to play older games would likely have the older system. Companies don't want you to buy cheap old games for your new console, they want you to spend $60 on shiny new titles.

I hope Sony ditches the XMB and drastically improves their UI and PSN, as well as add some more features to PS+. PS+ really is the best thing about PS3 right now, Sony needs to advertise it more.

my launch 60gb was chugging fine, but I have since sold it. Also I did do some preventative maintenance:
Swap out 15 to a 19-blade oem fan
rethermal pasted
always ran with a small desk fan next to it to push away hot air (if that even helps!)

Its been almost a year since I sold it and I haven't heard from the buyer :D

Me too, 60gb fat still chugging along.

My 60 fat daddy is rock solid to this day, (knock on every piece of wood in the house) with zero maintance. :D

Id like to see this PS4 really take a leap into the HTPC realm. With as many Apps as the Roku, a Living room HTML5 web browser, and apps like XBMC and Plex, would really answer a lot of my dreams.

Be careful, my 60gb unit has been solid too but I decided to do some preventative maintenance anyway and the thermal paste they used on the GPU/CPU was really dry. Replaced it with MX-4 and new thermal pads and everything is running fine, even cooler now it seems as the fan is a touch quieter.

Only takes about $20 if you're buying thermal paste/pads and an hour of time your first go around. I'd say the PS3 is actually easier to work on than the X360 (always hated the way the 360 shell came apart on the fats).

Bulldozer cpu's? really?

Pass.

Yeah,kinda sketchy..

FWIW, they're going to be "Jaguar" cores. Bulldozer cores are for the dev kits.

Still,we all know what a flop the Bulldozers were so how good can development be on these?
Will keep an eye on the PS..Im a PC gamer but a console with the "potential"to match what Im used to is intriguing..Though I cant see going back to paying $60 per game and the possibility of used games being locked out.

Yeah,kinda sketchy..

It's a console, what does it honestly matter? They are not getting a Core i3/5 in there.

A flop in what? Games strictly? Sure, meh. In multi-threaded apps? Not really heh. Sure, it's not a Sandy Bridge or an Ivy (which is really the same fucking thing), but I wouldn't really call it poo.

Maybe it is just me, but i actually think that if there is something in which such a cpu design could shine would be on a game console.

Think about it, wouldn't games be able to benefit from being able to parallelize a great deal of code?... sure it will take some time to get it properly done and optimized, but seeing all 3 big being AMD based it shouldn't take too long, at least not as long as previous generations.

Can't see paying top dollar for already inferior technology.

Yes, a flop in games. You know, the things consoles are made for. ;)

I'm actually on my 3rd 60GB "fat" PS3. The HDMI port on my first one died literally about a month after I bought it. Sony replaced that one in 3 days with a new boxed one. That one ended up getting the YLOD a year or so ago. I paid the $100 for Sony to replace it just because I still play a lot of old PS2 Street Fighter games. These days I suppose I could always buy the ROMs on the PSN store, though. I can't see myself replacing this machine again, so if it dies, I'll just do without.

Buy the next Xbox, that's obviously the direction they're going.

Leave the Playstation family alone.
If they turn the Ps4 into a media box, I'm done with console gaming because at that point, there won't be any console gaming systems left, just a bunch of nondescript boxes with fifty bells and whistles, the last of which is playing console games. And IMHO they can keep that shit to themselves. I want a console gaming system, not a media box.

At this point it's Ps4 or bust for me. Nothing's been said about the 720 but as far as I'm concerned Microsoft needs to do a 180 on the media hub nonsense they've instituted with the 360 with their new console, or I'm done with them.

Ps4 or bust. If it's reasonably priced, I'll get one right away. If it's not, I'd be more likely to buy a 27-30" 2560x1440 display and a better GPU and let the sun set on console gaming once and for all in my house.

I don’t mind the idea of media integration as long as the focus is still gaming. While I’m sure most of the folks on here have a dozen ways to reach Netflix, Hulu, etc. – how many are better than the consoles? Remember back when people were buying the PS3 just because it was the cheapest/best Blu-Ray player? I think casuals probably kept that system afloat until decent games hit.
I like the idea media functionality as long as it’s part of a greater package that still focuses on gaming first. Even with all of the “smart TV’s” and tablets, and phones, and all of that – the 360 and PS3 consoles still do the best job of bringing all of those features to your living room. I have all of the consoles, several smartphones, a PC hooked up to my TV, and a bunch of gadgets for work, too. Even with all of that, I still watch Netflix on my 360 and Blu-Rays on my PS3. If the PS3 had a better Netflix interface I’d probably stick to just that one.
I can’t imagine they require that much horsepower, licensing, or space to add either. Give me all of that stuff, just strive to do the best job with it. With the next generation, they’re going to have to sell whatever it is as being better than the current gen. Casual media seekers won’t have a reason to get a new console just for Netflix, so I think we’ll see the focus on games and interactive programs. Still, the media stuff isn’t going to go away. Hopefully it’ll just get better.
