Planetside 2

How many people are playing PS1?

Its dead right now, yes. All I'm saying the game is still up. SOE did not take it down during at the release of the game. Even up to the point of beta the game still had a decent following. It wasn't a ghost town a year after launch. PS2 thus far has had a far more successful launch in terms of players compared to PS1. Its just obvious from this thread some people will never accept the F2P model. If SOE didn't think the money making potential wasn't there with this model, they would of not gone F2P. For a game like PS2 that needs a huge population and is likely to have issues getting people to buy a box fee its perfect. SOE from what they have communicated supposedly have major plans for this game. I don't see it getting dull anytime soon.

I will attest that this game does in fact suck. The gameplay is pretty stale, there's no sense of actually accomplishing anything. The system they have setup for limiting vehicles and what not is also pretty dumb. The resources/timers thing - I suppose they need to cap the amount of vehicles somehow, but given the shelf life of your typical galaxy and what not, it's pretty meh in terms of getting to do what you want to do in-game. The huge grind on certifications vs station cash or whatever it's called is also a pretty big problem.

there doesnt seem to be any noticeable reward for taking over an area. I dont mind vehicle timers.
Certs, well, thats why you can pay to play.

The only thing I hate about the game is waiting time when we already captured the area but need to wait like 10 minutes doing nothing to fully capture it.

Usually it is booring like hell. But one while we were waiting anothe fraction tried to caputure it with organized platoon full of tanks. That was fun :)

Gah, the game keeps sucking me back in for an hour or two. To be completely honest with myself, I will probably spend $20 the next time they have a 70% off sale for SC.

Render distance is starting to really frustrate me in this game. While sniping I'm constantly seeing enemies pop in and out of view. Or there are times when I'm running up a whole only to find an entire enemy platoon camped up there (which I could not see before). Or when I'm flying around I constantly see infantry pop in last second as I fly by (already going by too quickly to do anything at that point).

They need to fix this asap...

My biggest beef is the sound. I NEVER hear people coming up from behind me. Just seems like average sound all around.

Know why squad leaders suck? They make it hard to place objectives and shit on the map. I can't use the mini map to place smoke lets say. The large map doesn't scroll in close enough , so I can be precise on objectives and shit. The VOIP in this game leaves too much to be desired to be of any consistent use.

Very frustrating.

Agree. The game is fun at first, playing at highest settings @ 2560 x 1600 looks really good, but not as good as BF3 graphics. And now two weeks later getting a little bored with PS2. Jumping in the big bomber planes, always takes forever to get it filled up, most bail out just waiting at the base, so the plane takes off with just 3 or 4 players, never filled up. And the objectives of capturing a base, seem strange. I like how they do it in BattleField a little better. Finding my Brother's who play, is hard to spot, have to look them up in the buddy system, but then actually finding them in game can be tough to post exactly where they are. And even when in the same squad together, I still find it difficult to see where they are. Can stuff like this be fixed in patches, or is this just the way it is, and not changing ?

I would love to see a BattleField 3 game with the same size HUGE maps and the Frostbite 2 engine.

Agree, they need to lower the cert cost on guns by half. BUT I don't begrudge them for making their money on a FTP game. Plus all the guns are pretty much equal.

its not like counter strike though where footsteps might be important. if youre fighting tends to be big 200+ people battles. footsteps and hearing people coming up behind you doesnt matter much imo

Slowly stalking about....headphones up to hear footsteps...sneaking up on a guy unaware and about to get a sweet kill....

And a reaver with night vision unloads 12 rockets onto you from out of nowhere, killing you and his team mate for good measure.

:D

I can hear footsteps and movement when it is quiet..

Like BF3 though, if there are vehicles or anything else making noise, I can't hear people moving around me.

When I first loaded up this game it seemed like it was going to be a blast... but it just doesn't do it for me it seems.

I can't hold my attention on it.

They need to make it easier to find squad mates. Half the time I lose track of their green name. Should put arrows or something to help find them. Both on the mini map and on the hud. Seems like its ranged based. I am always asking what their location is.

Not even vehicles. (though you are correct, it happens with vehicles also)Lets take the bio lab. I can be up in that center tree scouting and picking off lone enemy. I won't even hear a guy jet pack up, nevermind walking up behind me. Just sucks.

Who'd they have create the Sound Engine, Beethoven?

Agree. Green arrows bouncing off their head would be much needed. And make them very visible on the mini map too.

Is there a comprehensive guide for this game? Like how do you know who needs a heal? When I heal a downed player why do they suddenly disappear and where do they go to? Etc. Prefer written but video is ok.

Thx!

You heal who has a health bar above their name. When you revive a player they disappear because they didnt accept the revive and re spawned. Its not like BF3 where you take revives to save tickets. You take the revive to avoid running back. I denied revives because I was out of ammo or didn't want to be in that spot anymore.

1. People who need heals will have the + by their name above their head.
2. When you are 'reviving' a dead player if they choose to respawn before you complete the revival and send a request to them, they disappear because they spawned some place else.

They use a dynamic rendering system, the more people in a battle, the shorter the render distance, if you change the setting in the .ini then I believe it sticks to that value.

There are quite a few people complaining on the forums because a battle got big enough that the render distance was less then 5-10 meters, and with the way weapons work, if you cant see it, your bullets cant hit it, so it ended up being one big grenade spam fest.

PS2 literally killed my SSD second time :) Reinstalling Windows now. It is not a PS2 fault, I just have a crappy OCZ SSD and PS2 knows how to kill it efficiently :)

Good update coming tomorrow, yes!

John Smedley @j_smedley
New weapons coming Thursday. Next week awesome new anti vehicle ( including anti air you rocket pod haters) weapon

Looks like I'm logging in tomorrow.

Looks like I'm logging in tomorrow.

There is going to be a good amount of backlash over this considering all the problems that are still waiting to be fixed.

Edit: "John Smedley ‏@j_smedley

@Jippy we have a big frame rate improvement almost ready. The downside is it takes a new download"

Well that takes care the biggest complaint, lets hope it gets released really soon.

Just uninstalled for the second time. Dear lord its boring.

This game only works if you're 100% comfortable being vocal. You can do some amazing stuff in this game.

We had a base we were trying to defend. Suddenly the NC brought 10 or so heavy tanks up to a cliff and were raining hell on us. So i quickly infiltrate myself into a flanking position and put down a sunderer. I have my entire squad go 10 heavy assaults, 1 infiltrator (me), and 1 engineer.

I told them over VOIP, as soon as you see me mark one of the tanks with a flare, open fire (with rockets obviously).

With the coordinated rocket spam and engineer resupply, we whiped 75% of them out in less than a minute, while the others tried to run away.

This is why BF3 is dumbest game ever without proper VOIP.

EDIT: And that was just one squad in our platoon, doesn't take much coordination to make things happen.

Say what? You can mark stuff using flares? Explain this feature.

Well my impressions of PS2 are as follows :

First off I must say that this is a superior version in many ways to PS1. I don't know how many of you played PS1 in the early days but it was .. frustrating at times for many reasons that I will not go into here. It's beloved , yes but I think Sony took some good steps forward with PS2 ..and a few backward.

The gameplay is excellent , its an MMO (well sorta) at its roots so it won't come out of the oven fully cooked , no MMO ever has. I fully expect Sony to fix the majority of problems in the next 6 months to a year , just like many MMO's end up being. The Squad system could use some more polish , its not as embedded as it should be nor as easy to use as it could be. The guns are solid , the vehicles are done well and in general its a blast to play. Its free to play as well so its hard to knock too harshly since there was no up front cost to swallow. The epic battles when they occur are just fucking awesome , they easily squelch BF3's epic moments into dust.

However , having said that.. there are many "little" problems with PS2 and one HUGE problem. Most of the little issues I'm sure will be worked out in time however I feel that the map its-self and the lack of any real reward for capturing points is way to weak. Sometimes the battles are confined into one large area of the map and sometimes battles are so far spread out it can take almost 20 minutes to find a good size one to participate in. At night time there are basically no large scale battles so really until more people play PS2 , you basically wanna play at peak hours if you can help it.

Another big problem is that PS2 absolutely doesn't reward ANY lone wolf play. If you intend to play PS2 alone let me save you some time .. don't. It absolutely MUST be experienced with friends in a squad , I'm sure it was Sony's intention to have this as such and when you play with friends its just amazingly good fun even when you are losing. If you wanna play PS2 for "seriouz" then this game is an excellent way to build up a strong , powerful squad that can dominate much larger groups with even simple tactics. But playing PS2 alone is frustrating and straight up boring. I wish PS2 had a bit more favor for the lone wolf as I personally can't always get on the same times my friends do to play.

My biggest beef however .. is that the unlock points system is INSANELY overpriced. A single gun can take up to 20+ hours of play time to gather enough points to unlock. And the only other option is to buy it .. for $7 of real money. There are tons of weapons as well plus even if you buy or save for the gun it always ends up looking like every other gun you've seen UNLESS you buy camo for that gun which is... ANOTHER $5. So after you've put together just buying a gun that looks cool you've spent $12. To me , this is insanely over priced. Either Sony needs to lower the cost of "buying" weapons or it needs to lower the cost of unlocking them by at least half. Not to mention you can't use any of those unlocked guns you buy across classes , they are locked to that individual character ALONE. This unacceptable and frankly what ended up driving me away from this game.

Unless Sony lessens its greed for gun costs or gives players an actual shot at earning points in a realistic "I have a job and a life" time frame I can't see going back to playing this. If that changes at some point then I will gladly back off my stance on this.

So in short , if you have a solid group of friends to play with and you don't mind the maddening
cost of unlocking weapons either with real money or time than PS2 is absolutely worth it. But otherwise its probably a pass. The great thing however is that it is Free to Play so at least try it out and make up your own mind.

IMHO this game as good for lone wolfs as any other First Person Shooters. It might be booring but if you like to play alone just play , kill guys. Whta is not right about it?

I got one PS1 veteran as a friend and I join his squads and always have a blast. Today I played as a heavy inflitrator :) I jump into the tank and together with squad go clean some outpost. When I see that my tank is almost dead I jump off, cloak and flank the enemy to snipe it from behind. This taktik helped me today reach like 100 kills and 25 deaths. Not bad in my opinion :)

BTW, have they optimized the game already? My framereates were around 60-80 whole game today with settings below that is a mix of very high and very low settings. Game looks beautiful with those:

[Rendering]
GraphicsQuality=1
TextureQuality=0
ShadowQuality=0
RenderDistance=1500
Gamma=0.000000
MaximumFPS=120
UseLod0a=0
VSync=0
OverallQuality=-1
LightingQuality=1
FogShadowsEnable=0
EffectsQuality=1
TerrainQuality=5
FloraQuality=0
ModelQuality=5
ParticleLOD=0
MotionBlur=0

+1

I will continue playing, but they wont get a cent until I know that whatever I bought I can use with all characters I created. Tied to my account, not ONE char. So what If I delete a char that has a bought weapon? Is it deleted with the character? That not just bad business, thats straight up dishonesty. It's the same thing with certs, that should be account wide, not tied to the char. It doesn't even seem like greed at this point, it seems blatant. So I basically start the game over and can't touch any of my unlocks if I make a new char? That's retarded.

The unlocks are going account wide soonish, with restrictions on just faction specific weaponry.

It's all retroactive as well.

Where did you find this gold?
I lurk in their forums and haven't seen this posted, or was it a tweet?

Assuming your in the US... you're playing in dead hours, when nothing is happening.

Not giving them any money until they let you remap flight controls. Having pitch on the mouse and yaw on the keyboard is simply retarded. I'm not going to attempt to unlearn 12 years of muscle memory for a single game.

Is it worth doing the monthly subscription ? I do like PS2, but not getting certifications fast enough, due to paying casually, just an hour or two every other night.
