Planetside 2

Big plans for this game in the future... Link

Smedley explained that “we’re thinking about a game we plan to have running in 2025.” Which, as you may have noticed, is a bit more than three years from now. But that comparatively short span is the part SOE’s really focusing on, and by the end of it, Smedley’s hoping for player-owned bases, harvestable resources, seamless oceans between continents, NPC armies, and tons more.

Oceans... I can already imagine the battleships parking themselves next to the shoreline bases and unloading.

I don't like the sound of NPC armies though. It sounds like something that would remove focus from fighting real players, and AI instead.

Smedley already made a comment regarding that blog entry (the blog entry was four months old, why this is now making news I don't know): http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/1...s-planetside-2s-long-term-plans-npcs-arent-o/... "What about NPCs and PvE, though? "NPCs aren't on the table for a long time, if ever," Smedley told us."

Anyone pick up the Indar Bundle? I'm thinking of buying it, 2 vehicle camos and 2 infantry armor camos for 900 sc. Seems like a decent deal.

Not when you realize that your spending $9 for 4 pieces of camo.

I don't understand the point of those 'forever camos'. I would need to use a single-use camo on 11 different loadouts before a forever-use camo would be a better deal. That's a lot of loadouts for just one type of camo.

They stated that station cash items will be account wide in the future, so good chance that skins will be included. This will allow you to use the camo on other characters.

Also it gives you flexibility to use the camo whenever you want, if you like to switch your look a lot it saves you money. Especially if you plan on playing for the next year or two.

Edit: Also since these camos are on sale you'd get better value after only 5 uses.

Gah has anyone else had the bug where you spawn with 0 health? Keep having that happen over and over again. :D

This includes Certs, right?
I didn't notice if it wasn't shared through the account in the beta, I always assumed it was, but I know its not now. Don't like it the way it is now, you have to start all chars from 0, thats really lame.

Ugh they need to work out a lot of the bugs in this game before even thinking about DLC...

but certs probably shouldnt be transferable. cause they directly influence the strength and dev. of your character. where sc is just a short cut to buy guns and cosmetic items

I agree but it would be nice if a scope/foregrip you bought for one gun was usable on any gun that can use that option. Then you could spend the majority of your certs on the class-unique stuff.

Last night someone managed to get a tank into the bio labs, on the ice continent on jaeger server. Speculation is that a magrider got a lift from a galaxy.

I don't mean per accounts, currently I cant play with one char and then use the Certs I gained playing with him on my other chars. It really ticked me off when someone told me how to enable the S-AMS only to find out the char I was using at the time (because the server with my main was busy) only had 3 Certs, since it was new and my Certs are being held hostage by my main char.

I guess i get their reason, but I don't see it helping much versus the inconvenience I've encountered. Oh well, its just a minor thing anyway..... PS2 is slowly turning into my game of the year! (Where were you yesterday?! EH?)

i was on dota a little bit and was playing hitman. didnt play PS2 like i should have ;P

i am down to play tonight though, i bet i have a shit ton of certs right now

The people that did that were saying the tanks were too heavy to get up into the air with

I really am curious as to how this happened, must have been epic

Tried PS2 for the first time last night and was having a blast. Will definitely get some more play time from me.

there a list of where people are playing or if there is a [H] outfit?

I'm on Waterson, name is Furiak.

This brings up an interesting question I have.. is there a limit to how many certs you can get from the pool? If you stop playing for a few months and come back, I'd imagine you'd have a shit-ton of certs.

IIRC, it's 1 cert per hour? So that's 720 certs in a month (30 days).

This game might not exist in 5 years. It definitely won't survive to 2025.

How are they making money on this again? No pay to win? Let's see what happens when people stop buying art and they need a new way to pay the bills.

You are out of your min dif you think people aren't paying for guns, etc.

the price of guns to get from simply playing free is soooooooooo high that many people will break down and pay real money for them rather then having to invest 70+ hours into it for a single gun.

My brothers were asking that same question this weekend. They are big PC Gamers, love the BattleField franchise, even both still play WoW very casually. But they ask how the hell is Planetside 2 gonna make any money if the game is free.

I said by buying weapon upgrades, etc...they laughed, and said no fucking way in hell would they ever spend real money for a video game weapon, they both flat out said, just never gonna do that. They said PS2 should have been sold like a full box game @ $60 like BF3, and they would happily buy it. But for some reason they just can't see themselves going online with their credit card to buy a game weapon.

Same with WoW, they like it, no an issue paying the $15/month fee, but they would NEVER buy Gold online, or a new mount or pet from the Blizzard store, they said no way in hell would they ever pay that crap. They say the $15/month is ok, they gettng new content and updates for that stuff.

Now their question for PS2 is, if they will never pay for new weapons, should they just stop playing the game, because someone who is willing to fork out real cash will be better than them, who just play casually.

The answer is depends

With all F2P games there ends up being a P2W component, how bad that is depends on the specifics of the game. What people really need to think about is how much you are paying for a unit of time. If you were willing to drop over $100 a year into WOW then its really not a problem to drop $100 over a year into PS2. If $60 is reasonable for a game to you then you have to do some quick calculations and see what $60 would buy you in PS2 and if that would set you right and happy as far as what you get.

Unfortunately most of the time I find that is not the case, the problem with F2P games is the value is not good because everyone who does pay has to pay more than usual to offset the people who do not pay.

They could have bought Alpha squad like paying for a normal game and get ton of certs and boosters. What stopped them from doing so?:)

You guys think just because the game went F2P they stopped charging subscriptions? It's still there, just go to the SC page and see the break down by 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, 1 year. Sure what you get may be "different", but thats basically the old subscription model.

They will make hella money. Not even worried about that.

they are probably going to make way more then they would have anyways. non subbed people spending money. people spending money and subbing.

i have seen a lot of people buying cosmetic items and guns. i personally have spent 40$ and subbed.

i like the game and i like looking cool too

My brothers are asking, how is spending real money on PS2 any different than buying gold for WoW from Chinese farmers ?

The difference is that now the money will actually go back to the dev to support the game =]

Exactly, they opened up an additional market for themselves! How could they not make money!?
I say that and I'm resisting as much as possible..... at least until I understand the prices of items better. Not a fan of subs at all. Still thinking about all of it.

Even if people don't spend money they still contribute by keeping the numbers up and making the game more fun. :D

That is true but companies dont pay people to play =] So it still does not change the fact that there must be a population of people who are paying alot to play to offset them.

The biggest hurdle is going to be the people who dont pay, have small-moderate play time, and want new guns. I am willing to bet a sizable number of people are going to quit or rarely play because they aren't getting a "return" on their time. Considering the game needs to have a large population in order to survive, I think they need to double cert gain rate as it would still take years to buy everything.

I bought the $40 Alpha Squad pack simply to support this type of game.

Finally, after 6+ years, we get a real dedicated multiplayer PC FPS game that is amazing in every facet (scale, graphics, sound, gameplay, etc), and people are concerned with the money making aspect. Considering PS1 made it nearly a decade with its peak population less than that of PS2's Beta testing, I wouldn't be surprised if this game lasted for as long as they had hoped. If they continue to work on the pull-factor to lure more people in for longer periods of time, this game will be a major success.

This thread, however, has made me realize just how badly PC gamers have Stockholm Syndrome. Some people complain about the game, while its free to play... and then they go and buy COD 15 for $60, or go and play BF3 ported straight from the consoles.

PS1 that was released back in 2003 and is still up. I don't see this game going under in 5 years...

This is where I stopped reading, lets look at what you have stated shall we?

Graphics: DX9, even set to ultra, the game looks fairly bland.
Sound: The sound is pretty standard, the music is nothing to write home about, so how exactly is it "amazing?"
Gameplay: It has turned into "zerg the closest undefended point" 80% of the time, the gun play is pretty much middle of the road. Then you have the bugs, glitches, and severe unoptimization of the game causing a lot of people to have low fps.

The game is middle of the road, the only feature that sets it apart is size of the map and players. The problem is that the engine sucks and participating in large battles sucks because they are using such a shitty unoptimized engine.

I have played for 30 hours so far and think I am done, the huge grind, poor optimization, and lack of any real communication from SOE has killed it for me. This game should still be in alpha testing right now.

How many people are playing PS1?

And that's what they said about League of Legends....:D

Does league of legends allow you to buy better weapons? does it look bland while running like crap even though its a DX9 engine?

Edit: I really hope the developers fix all the problems fast, the game has tons of potential but I feel that it is wasting a lot of it by being in the state it is right now. If they fixed a large majority of problems I would most likely do a 6 month sub.
