i thought the memory ran at 1.8Ghz DDR which would be 900Mhz SDR, which begs the question, why is the memory clocked to 525Mhz?

ATitool shows only half of the MHz when using nVidia, I think.

Does that ATitool by any chance allow voltage changes on-the-fly with G80?

Overclocked to 1050.

ok, that means ATI tool only shows 1/4th of the resulting clockspeed

525 * 2 = 1050 * 2 = 2100Mhz

so stock would show 450Mhz which is actually 900Mhz which ends up being 1800Mhz DDR.......

ATI tool is retarded

Oblivion doesn't render far-away land with good quality, so it's blurr. However, the good-quality rendering area can be changed in the ini-file, thus making it even more demanding game for hardware...
Yes, there is an option in the Oblivion.ini that allows you to change the distance at which LOD terrain kicks in, the default is "uGridsToLoad=5".

"uGridsToLoad=7" is a nice balance between visual quality and performance for most systems...but considering you have an 8800GTX in that system, I would go for "uGridsToLoad=9" (Going higher than 9 will cause visual anomalies).

And don't forget about mods! These texture replacements will improve the LOD land (You'll need to install all three):
1. LANDSCAPE LOD TEXTURE REPLACEMENT
2.
LANDSCAPE LOD TEXTURE REPLACEMENT BORDER REGIONS
3. LANDSCAPE LOD NORMALMAP FIX

I'd really like to see results for uGridsToLoad=9. That is the way Oblivion was marketed before release in many a screenshot.

If you really want to see how good oblivion can look, go here http://devnull.devakm.googlepages.com/obliviontextureoverhaul and download all the world texture mods. Makes a huge difference and would love to see how a 8800gtx can handle them with every set to the max.

As for the AA + HDR issue, may have to wait until the 8th and see if they have a driver ready that they're sitting on to fix this.

Can you, decapitator, tell what scores you got on PS2.0, PS3.0/HDR tests, please?

Hi Matas, I have never OCed or benched a video card so I have no clue as to what I'm doing  Mike is doing a great job in that dept :) I would love just to give one of my cards to someone who excels at this sorta thing so you guys get some solid results.

I can say this, running just one single 8800GTX has spanked my previous 7900GTX SLI setup and that's in 3D Mark05 and 06 and in game play as well.

I wish I could run both cards but my MB will not support it so I'm hanging in there for the 680i next week.

i wonder if the frys in woodland hills has it in stock...

MUST WAIT FOR eVGA to let me step up!

i'm curious as to why ATI/AMD hasn't "leaked" any values if R600 is truly going to trounce this. shouldn't they have a semblance of working product 2 months from launch(iirc)?

yeah, for being a free utility labeled ATItool, it really should be better at doing everything you need it to do, especially with nVidia cards

ATI Tool sucks pretty much, but i guess you get what you pay for......

Unless maybe ATI didnt expect this much power from the G80 an now have to go back to the drawing board.....

BTW is the hard launch day the 6th or the 8th

Yeah but that doesn't normally stop a company from saying stuff anyways :p. I think it's the eighth.

And JCL, I know what you mean. I had the opportunity to buy a XFX (I think?) GTS downtown Toronto yesterday!! 635 + Tax! I really REALLY want an eVGA version.

How exactly does it "spank" your 7900gtx sli setup? I mean I'm not flaming and I love the g80 and all but from everything we have seen so far it doesnt even beat 7900gtx sli setups. Comes close, yes, but not beat. Am I wrong here guys?

It's very simple: run 3DMark06 and above the total score will be PS2.0, PS3.0/HDR results.

Meh... not impressed, especially not for $650.
Waiting for R600.

I'm not impressed either..... @ OBLIVION. WTF is up with those screenshots!?!?!?!? CoD2 looked amazing @ 1024 though with that 16xAF. I'm impressed with the FEAR benchmarks too. Will this thing run everquest 2 at the insane settings (not saying it's a good game or anything)?

It's all about what filter settings you use and where you stand when you take the pic.

I find the 8800GTX to pretty much be equal with current testing drivers, to 7900GTX SLI. Now that.. is amazing.

IMO, 7900GTX SLI is the best setup you can buy today (not a fan of quad, to many limitations.. not a fan of Xfire, its not as good as SLI overall).

To match what many consider what is pretty much the "ultimate setup" as of today, to match or beat it with future drivers almost with certainty is amazing IMO.

Toss in angle independant AF, the Quantum Physics engine, 128bit HDR, VCAA, quiet operation, low power consumption (relatively), ShaderModel 4.0/DirectX10 support, 128 unified shaders and yeah.. I consider that a spanking no doubt.
50-100% faster than the X1950XTX (which is roughly equal in performance to a 7950GX2?

A spanking much better than I was expecting out of G80, so much better that my credit card is on the desk right now waiting for availability.

No one can stop this, not even 7900GTX SLI. :p

The COD2 screenshots were showing 16xs AA (Anti-aliasing).

Again, the default textures even at the highest settings don't look all that great, to get the most out of the game you really need to use player made mods which pretty much re-texture everything. Can check the link I posted above for ss of the difference between the original and player made.

Depends on what you're playing and what settings you're using. Regardless, I would not say the X1950 is "roughly equal" across the board. It falls way behind in some games, and in many others it is still behind by a measurable margin. There are exceptions of course, but overall there is no doubt that the GX2 is the faster card. And this is before you factor in the greater overclocking headroom on the GX2.

Hey, I am an Nvidia fan.. I can def agree with this. :D

Either way, ATIs best offering is getting pummelled by the G80. Let them eat cake.

Yeah... what I really want to know is whether or not there will be a "chuck patch" for the 8800 series like there was for the X1K series. Looking at the numbers being put up by the 8800 so far, I'm not sure it'd really be worth my while to upgrade from my GX2 @ 600/1500, but if it would let me play Oblivion with HDR+AA at acceptable framerates, then I'll be all over it.

Of course, as long as the 8800 is available for step-up before Christmas, I'm eligible, so it would be pretty stupid NOT to step up :(

Oh yea, srry about that. I meant 16xsAA (got confused thinking of Oblivion). Anyways, I don't think Oblivion gives the 8800, as of now, a clear advantage over current video cards. This is what Oblivion looks like on my system. This is @ 1680 with HDR on a 6800GT. Sure the framerate is @ 25, but it's a 6800GT-- a + four yr old video card. The 8800 demolishes my video card, but not by a huge margin in this game.

yeah, it wasn't the best ATI overclocking utility/artifacting checking/information giving utility for x600/700/800/850/1300/1600/1800 series. CCC was tons better

don't talk smack cuz you don't know how to do something like that

sorry but the 6800gt is not a 4 year old vid card,if that was the case my 6800ultra would be ancient,i got my 6800ultra at around release, and that was way under 3 years ago.

Take it back!

EDIT: Wait, how are you compare/knowing this?

wow, it seems like it's been that long to me :(. I bought it in 2004, but I have had so many problems and RMA's with it that it has felt like forever. So it's going on 3 yrs. My bad :)

Still doesn't justify the price you're paying for an 8800gtx if you're playing it for Oblivion. I hope newer drivers or an update from bethesda fixes the AA though, it looks pretty horrible.

Well, I remember reading that at max settings, 40fps was the average. As i see from the images posted, there wasn't a HUGE difference in quality from how it looks like on my system. Oblivion's engine is so schizo!!!

Not saying it's a fact, but I'm making the best comparison I can to my system. If someone has some other experience with better quality @ 16xsAA , then by all means post them, because I like Oblivion and the results so far don't look too appealing:(

i live about 35 miles from the makers of oblivion. Bethesda maryland

I personally won't be happy until I can play Oblivion with all in-game sliders maxed, HDR+4x AA with transparency supersampling AA and 16x high-quality AF. I can do all of that now except for the TSAA part... supersampled grass brings my frames crashing down into the teens. Oh and also I can't use HDR with AA yet obviously since I'm on an nvidia card :(

Doh, you beat me by 2.1 miles ;)

Need some new developments for more efficient grass AA algorithms. Grass is the new water, lol. :p

gorilla:
Have you seen the HDR+AA in Oblivion video yet? Here's the full url from Nordic. The vids are from ATI...

LMFAO @ the grass jokes. Moving the slider from far right back to "XBOX 360" levels doubles my frames. :D

EDIT: You'll need fraps to view the video.

False. This has already been discussed here, it's not about filtering. You have to mod the game and / or increase the above mentioned rendring area. It's the way how the engine normally renders distant landscape.

Your making that assertion based on a pre-released piece of hardware with un-official drivers. Let's wait for the professional reviews.

Not to mention, it's really not that bad. I've read one report claiming the Geforce 8800GTX @ 1920x1200 with max settings and HDR+AA performance as fast as a Geforce 7900GTX @ 1600x1200 with no HDR+AA and all settings low/off.

That's pretty impressive, imo. But again, let's just wait for the reviews.

Hi Savoy,
I'm not sure what you have seen in regards to 7900GTX SLI vs 8800GTX single card, but I can tell you from my own experience my games have improved in not only FPS but overall smoothness. Hay I love my 7900GTX SLI but if I get the performance I'm getting with just one of my 8800's then what will I get when I can use my other one

I be careful of those specs and will have to wait until this week to find out the proof behind the pudding.

One thing that amazes me is not once has anyone who got am early 8800 has commented on how great the image quality is over the card they replaced. That scares me most.
