PC Gaming is too much work.

As far as I know, all recent games play fine out of the box. And for the lazy, they look better than the console version without messing around with the controls. Forgot to change the FOV and AA? It's still better than the console.

True, but there are the few exceptions, like Crysis 2. I don't know how it was on Nvidia cards, but it took a LONG time for AMD to resolve the flicker issues in the game, which was annoying as hell.

A lot of the pain was that you had to pay $30 a year for fileplanet just to get god damn patches. Steam makes it a ton easier now that it auto patches and gets rid of CDs. But installs still take forever. If you get distracted and screw around with the options and then never play the game, well then most likely you'd end up here bitching about how x and y are not available

Anyway, PC gaming is still expensive and always will be. Current versions of Windows hardly need to be reinstalled which keeps the maintenance down. Windows updates downloads your graphic drivers.

Anywho, most PC gamers in this forum who post are way to biased to admit the weakness PC gaming has over consoles but if you want to play games quickly without tons of maintenance getting some of them running, then you can not beat a console.

Just a rant I guess. I used to be a PC Gamer and enjoyed all that it involves from building up your system to tweaking obscure game settings to get that extra few frame rates. Then after I got my console I got lazy and now I can't get back into PC gaming! I find it frustrating that you can't just buy a PC game install it and be playing in a few minutes with max resolution and everything smooth.

There is always so much tedious work involved. Adjusting this and that and downloading drivers and stopping processes and then you got it working a little bit smooth and then it crashes. I used to enjoy all the tweaking and fine tuning but now I hate it. I built an $1700 crossfire three dell IPS monitor eyefinity system with dual 5850 and Phenom II CPU and 8 gigs of ram about 8 months ago but all I do is Surf the web with it.

Sell the rig, spend the proceeds on hookers and blow, I guess that's all your rig is good for at this point.

But in all seriousness some really good PC games are coming out in November, I mean we have a major lineup of games coming out then.

Tommorrow, Witcher 2 comes out, you don't want??

My PC was old and had Windows XP and a single 8800GT so I thought maybe building a new toy and three monitors would inspire me again. But after putting it together all I ended up doing was benchmarking and looking at it. I played Crysis and Dirt2 but there was no wow factor involved. Like I lost all motivation in it. I actually play more games on my iPhone than anything else.

iPhone?!?!? Dude resign your account at hardforum and never come back. LOL

PC's have come a long way, but when it comes to consoles, nothing beats it for ease of use, agreed. That's why I game on both consoles/pc's. :)

I only game on consoles when I'm forced too.. I love racing games and therefore I have a 360 for Forza3 and a PS3 for blu-ray watching/GT5. That pretty much the only time I use them.

are you fat? are you from usa? if both yes, only consoles and prozac for you

I primarily play on consoles for exclusive console games only. Stuff that's on both consoles/pc, I'll always play on pc, provided the developer didn't do a shoddy job with the port.

I've pretty much given up on consoles until the next gen at least. I've had both my 360 and PS3 crap out on me. And its just my opinion, just like with the OP, so nobody freak out.

What's the use of PC gaming "dying", when console gaming is literally dying for me?

Besides, I have a MASSIVE backlog of Steam games bought on impulse sales, especially huge games like all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that I haven't touched. I definitely have enough PC games to last me even if damn Sony and MS keep peddling their motion control crap to delay their next consoles as long as possible.

In all honesty, PC gaming has never been easier. Most games are pretty good about picking settings based on your config. You don't have to eek out that extra 5 fps if you don't want to. If you don't want to put your PC together, there are plenty of places to buy a PC with a decent - top of the line discreet vid card.

Is it as easy as a console? No, never will be. But compared to PC gaming 5 years ago? It's night and day. Be thankful it's not the late 80's and early 90's...himem.sys, config.sys, autoexec.bat...don't miss that crap one bit.

This ^ and...

Steam is right up your alley, easy installing, automatic updates, even keeps track of your display driver.

...this ^.

Not really much to "config" a system these days, unless you're simply not into the building aspect. Not as easy as console, but more than worth it if gaming is a large part of your life.

Hell, my wife has recently turned into a full-fledged hardcore PC gamer at this point, though we do own two 360s. I mean, I grew up on consoles, in arcades etc., and started PC gaming soon after DOOM was released. I suppose I could still stand playing on 360 on our 37" HD TV, as it looks pretty good, but from every perspective... visuals, controls etc. just nothing touches PC gaming.

I still play GTA IV on 360, mainly to sit back on the couch and relax while enjoying it, and the PC version is a disaster. Maybe I'll do the same for Saints Row: The Third, though I'll still get it on PC, for the visual and controls experience.

Some games it worth owning for both platforms.

But, these days, honestly, I don't see how it's that much "work" to get even a high-end right up-and-running. Not really rocket science, and definitely worth it for what's available on PC (including MMOs, which are PC-centric), but, to each his/her own.

Especially being a hardcore FPS gamer (my wife too) as well, though... forget consoles...

lol I can't believe people are bitching at pc gaming. Back then I had to slop in 12 friggin diskettes just to play strike commander.

...or needing boot discs to free up enough RAM to run X-Wing.

You built a crossfire PC that can play nearly every game ever made at 1080p DX11 at max settings and you're complaining that it takes too much work to to tweak games when you can just use a console without tweaking (even though the best you'll get is 720p DX9, and often less). Do you realize the default settings on most PC games are going to be far above the console level of performance? And, even if they're not, I've never thought it a huge burden to move a couple of sliders or drop down boxes.

Kids these days, they have it rough, don't they? ;)

Hell yeah, what a bunch of whiners. :p Back when I started gaming on PC part of the fun of it was properly configuring DOS, remember himem.sys ? Manually configuring sound, irq's and everything else just to get the game to play. Those were the days.....

Compared to now where I just check if driver vendor released driver for a new game specifically, otherwise it's drop in DVD, install game, setup game, play. It's not THAT tough.

Every system out there has it's flaws but honestly these days you don't have to bend of backwards, update drivers, recofigure your hardware, create time travel, etc... you just install and play... shit most games have a link thatll update the game itself!! or steam does that automatically... how much simpler does it have to be? And honestly, editing the cfg/ini files to adjust FOV.. is just a personal preference to people... if you dont like the FOV of a particular game have a go at it and change it in those files... if you got the console counterpart you'd be stuck with that FOV without any option or method to change it... so consider the extra step you have a blessing to change that on the PC>

People are still ignorant when it comes to PC gaming... when talking to a coworder about The Witcher 2 yesterday he mocked me and was like ooo i gotta play with my keyboard.. blah blah and sit at a desk to play my computer game... Don't people get that there are countless controllers out there for the PC? and that it can connect to a TV? ugh, threads like this strike a bad nerve on me...lol I

kids these days would have a nervous breakdown if they had to type load"*",8,1 like i had to on my commodore 64 back in the 80's... if it's not "insert disc and play" they seem to be incapacitated

You didn't have an Epyx Fastload cartridge! ;)

lol probably not. I remember having one or two games on cartfidge for the c64 and even the original Forbidden Forrest that played off the cassette deck!!! lol

RTS games. If only for that, I'd keep a PC.

And simulators.

DCS A-10c and Arma 2 :D

Tweaking and getting things to my liking is part of the deal. I actually enjoy it quite a bit. Customizing my hotas setup, configuring mfd's on other displays, etc.

Lately the only games I've been playing are Minecraft, DCS A-10c, Arma 2, Starcraft 2, and Team Fortress 2. I'm hoping to get into the Witcher 2 tomorrow... None of those games are offered on my consoles.

Don't forget Minecraft!!

Sn1PeR great game selection!!! all awesome games, only one I'm missing of those listed is DCS a-10
:(

Flight sims are another reason to game on a PC! black shark was an awesome game, can't wait to get a-10c

I don't find myself tweaking many new games, but older ones sometimes take a bit of work to get them running on modern hardware. Doesn't bother me.

:) It basically had various file management functions, a machine code monitor, and disk read acceleration on it. It also simplified the commands a little bit. Like you could just type $ for a directory listing.

OP: You'd HATE the DOS gaming days.

Hello autoexec and himem...

lol I wasn't aware of all that. In the c64 age I was too busy playing games and messing around a bit with basic. I always love old tech stuff, as primitive as those catridges were it's interesting seeing the old tech from years past..

lol mmmm DOS gaming days... oh how i loved those days. now I have the urge to replay return to zork

I'm glad I have an old box with windows 95 on it. Lets me play all the classics whenever I want. (yeah dosbox works too)

I download video card drivers once every couple months, everything else is basically taken care of by windows update. I use steam and I never have to update or patch anything, it's automatic.

Let me put this in perspective for you:

"I want to play video games" on my pc - wiggle my mouse to wake PC. Play.

"I want to play video games" on my xbox - turn on tv, turn on stereo, go grab my controller stashed in the coffee table, walk over to my games rack and grab the game I want to play, put it in the drive, start xbox 360, wait a minute or two, start playing. Oh damn, game has a patch, I gotta wait for that to finish because xbox doesn't auto download patches for your games while you're not using it like steam.

... and consoles are simpler? Really?

Honestly PC is far simpler now. All the guesswork is taken out of it. You only really need to update 1 driver, the video card drivers, and even that is taken care of by windows update but I prefer to get the drivers straight from nvidia only because of personal preference.
Yup, my 360 is annoying compared to my pc now tbh, even with my sig rig.

If you think 360 is annoying, what bout the ps3? I've never been more annoyed by a console than the ps3 and I've been gaming on consoles since the Atari 2600. Let's see - I haven't touched a first party game in months. Turn the game on - oh, what's this - there are like 10 patches. Oh, I need to update the firmware. Gotta do that, too. Oh, the game requires a mandatory install, too? By the time I'm able to even play the game, I could have cooked, eaten my dinner, and washed the dishes.

I use DOSBox, but with a real Roland MT-32 attached via MIDI. Works beautifully for all the Sierra, Origin, Lucas games that had MT-32 support. :) It's on my HTPC system, with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, so I can sit on the couch and play DOS games. :D

This thread brought hellish levels of nostalgia.

To the powers that are... make the developers release WingCommander and Strike Commander, with proper steering, GFX, and good plot... and bring back from ashes Sierra, Origin and Microprose.

And to hell with Kotick and Ubisoft :D

I install games and play them max resolution without tweaking all the time

You'll be spending more time watching your xbox load saves and maps than you would have "tweaking".

+1

And my PC is more reliable than a Xbox, and my online gaming has been more reliable than the PSN. Not to mention how much better PC games look, and how much better most of them play.

Just wait as consoles become more like PCs as its happening now. Just a console generation ago, gamers didn't have to worry about firmware updates if they bought a new game out of the box to run that game, installations for games (especially PS3 titles), DRM, etc. Its only going to get worse and the line between PCs and consoles get only get blurrier at this point.

omg this thread's bringing back so many fond memories of my youth... Microprose was a beast back in the day, civilization, F117, F15 strike eagle, f19, Falcon 3.0/4.0!!!!! European air was was simply awesome.. what ever happened to Microprose?!?

The only game i have issues with in dos box is The 7th guest and the 11th hour, video is very choppy at times...i think i need to edit the number of cycles to smooth it out, well worth the trial and error for 2 amazing games

I find it hilarious how the most avid console gamers complain that they dont have to install games on their consoles... but wait a minute, they have that option.. and i'm sure the next gen it'll be a standard to install games to the harddrives.... consoles definitely aren't like they used to be

PCs are a pain in the ass and have been for as long as I can remember. These guys just think they are studs because they game on one. Big deal.

I don't have to do any of that when I play. Just set the game for native resolution (usually detects automatically), press the max graphics options, configure a few keyboard buttons, and it's good to go.

Takes me less time and it boots faster than putting a disc in a console and waiting for a mission to load.

I always laugh a posts like this. If modern PC gaming is too much work, well I guess some people just don't have the intellect to handle basic tasks on the PC. I remember making different boot disks back in the day for various games under DOS depending on the requirements. Remember Ultima 7? That MFer had strict conventional mem requirements of 594 KB! I was like 12 or 13 when I made the perfect boot discs for this. Holy shit, the little amount of work now a days to get games to work is silly in comparison. OP: See ya! Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

I agree its easier to buy a console game and not have to worry about installing anything, but I will gladly continue to take that little extra time to game on my PC. In a way, I get more excited to play while getting my PC ready and installing the game. It's like foreplay for a nerd.

Single card single monitor gaming on PCs is simple these days, nothing pain in ass about it. Only exotic stuff like multi-monitor, multi-GPU and 3D is any work and of those 3 only 3D is available to consoles and that sucks compared to 120Hz S3D generally.

My PC was old and had Windows XP and a single 8800GT so I thought maybe building a new toy and three monitors would inspire me again. I personally see eyefinity setups as a way to upgrade your experience in games you already enjoy. It won't really help you like games you would never enjoy to begin with.

For example, if you play WoW, or another MMO/game/whatever for hundreds of hours and are looking for a way to upgrade your experience - then a multi-monitor setup is one way to do it. However, its not going to suddenly make games you found to be "meh," amazing.

A $3,000 pc system is not going to make you like games that you didn't like to begin with. If there is a game that you really enjoy (Oblivion) then try playing that to see just how much better it is with a new setup. Good luck!

As I've gotten older I've become a more discerning gamer. That is, I've started to understand what games I will like and what games I won't like. Took me a while, but I've finally figured out which games to avoid (although Steam sales do not help!).
