So we're all agreed, PC gaming generally is a pain in the ass?

Not anymore it isn't. It used to be, but then again there was so much more we had on the PC than there was on consoles. The quality of the games were better and we had seemingly unmatched variety. However, those days are gone. Now we are lucky to get the same crap as consoles, we get everything late and worse than that, we may not get everything the consoles get. But from an installation and hardware perspective, PC gaming is 10x easier than it used to be an only slightly more difficult than console gaming so long as your computer isn't an unstable piece of crap. (Then again we don't experience RROD or YLOD issues.)

Indeed!

I don't remember the last time I had an issue with my PC (short of something that could just as easily happen to a console (like failing HDD or something.))

I think it needs to be repeated... (again...)

WIGGLE MOUSE TO WAKE, CLICK ON GAME, PLAY GAME.

Just throwing this out there. Since i am in high school i talk to a lot of kids. The biggest issue is that no its not strickly gaming that is the pain in the ass. Its the money and building part of it. Granted i go to a rich school (which sucks cuz everyone thinks they own you). Think about it. Build a computer that is very good at gaming ur looking at over 1000. Plus upgrades on hardware software stuff. Even buying a computer from the best buy or something. Still more expensive. I can buy another ps3 for what 300 now? Get on the internet or youtube and watch blu rays and game? Plus music? For only 300? I mean really look at that. But gaming on a computer is so much better though. Lol plus when consels break. You what call sony and get it fixed. Your co puter gets a bsod? So much harder to fix it. Depending on the error. Ya know? Juat my two sense. Even tho its more expensive ill stick with my pc.

Also, games would run smoother on PC's if developers would stop making shitty console port games. They look terrible on console, I don't know why they don't port it TO console rather than FROM console. It makes much more sense that way, but developers are lazy.

Cost is why they port from console to PC. When the console version of a game is the primary profit generator, it makes more financial sense to develop that first and natively.

It's so much easier today than back in the 90's it's not even in the same galaxy lol. Gaming on a PC really is very easy now a days. All it takes is updating drivers once in a while and installing steam and clicking play. It's pretty amazing how it has changed for the better over the years. PC gaming isn't expensive either. Everyone has a laptop or a dektop PC at home, at least one usually more than one. Just make sure you get a low/mid end descret GPU in that same box and you are good to go. That's it. You don't need a 500.00 gpu to game at great visuals and with good fps. There is no excuse for the oh it takes 1000.00 to do it. No, you already have a PC of some sort just don't order it with bullshit integrated intel graphics. Get a small upgrade on the gpu from nvidia or amd and your golden.

Example: I needed a new laptop back in december. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on it since it was mainly for business use and I already have a kick ass gaming PC. That said I knew I would do a bit of gaming and my kids as well. I ordered a nice CI5 Dell XPS laptop with a baby nvidia gpu (gt420m). It plays mostly everything great. The whole thing shipped cost me just over 800 bucks. How can you go wrong? I needed the machine anyway so I ordered one with a descreet gpu wasn't expensive at all. So what's the problem?

I got into PC gaming right around the time that 386 and 486 machines were the bees knees. Playing Wolfenstein, Wing Commander and Flashback on my 486 50Mhz (8 megs ram, 1x cdrom, sound blaster 16 pro, it was smoking) made Nintendo look like a toy.

Consoles can only hang with PC's by trying to be PC's. The current consoles were great back in 2006. Now they are outdated and PC's are enjoying a huge lead. My xbox360 is primarily used now to stream media from my PC to my home theater. All gaming is on the PC.

We have one button push overclocking, and people still think PC gaming is too hard? :p

Sometimes when I play with my penis too much it blisters, then I can't play with it anymore for 5 to 8 days until it heals.

I've gamed since the beginning of console and PC gaming. I used to type in my own games and lost them when I powered off my computer (on a membrane keyboard, no less..) PC gaming is still a pain in the ass, and if you can't see that then you probably aren't be realistic. Shit always breaks, a drive goes out, video card memory goes out, a driver has a problem, selecting the right parts takes a lot of time, the case doesn't have enough airflow, a newer piece of technology isn't "perfected," and on and on.

PC gaming has been a pain in the ass the entire 29 or so years that I've been a part of it.

Luckily, consoles do not have PC hardware in them, therefore they never fail.

If your PC breaks that much, quit buying shitty parts or quit buying premade Dells.

Basically, it sounds like you suck at computers.

Most of your Dells/HP are just using one offs or modified boards made by companies like ASUS/Foxconn etc.

Granted some of the other parts might not be as high quality but the depreciation loss that comes from some components (ie 600 dollar video cards) is not worth the investment in the first place.

Corners are cut on components, it doesn't matter the manufacturer, the specs are finalized for Dell/HP. Their components are cheaper.

Also, where did the requirement for a $600 video card come from?

Dunno, maybe Nvidia should stop manufacturing defecting solder jobs?

Bumpgate, yes. The issue was mostly with mobile platforms, though. Also, unless there is something I'm missing, you aren't locked into buying nVidia cards.

Who knows. You can get a kickass video card for $200 these days. It used to be the case that those who spent the big bucks would have an experience well beyond anything you could get in a midrange GPU. Those days are over, though. The very high end cards are really only necessary for high-resolution/multi-display gaming.

You say consoles never fail? Say that to my 3 broken playstation 2s. A.K.A. You dont know what your talking about. Lol

Fact is that PC gaming remains a pain in the ass. This coming from a guy that was excited to get a tape drive for his Atari 400, so that he wouldn't have to retype his programs. It may be easier than it was at times, but it doesn't mean that the whole process doesn't end up taking up a lot of time and energy on the part of the enthusiast or consumer.

Most of the time it is pretty easy. But when there IS an issue, it can be a huge pain in the ass. It could be a driver issue, it could be a hardware issue on one of many components, and even browsing the net for those who share the same issue finds that it is never a single "cure" for it, but a dozen different solutions and often times none of them will work in your particular situation.

I'm a die-hard PC gamer, don't enjoy consoles for the most part. I think the few times I run into issues is worth it in the long run, but if someone new comes into one of these issues right off the bat, or some are unable to look at the long term, I can see how it could be viewed that way. Right now I'm having the crossfire flickering issue and I want to tear my hair out at times. But it'll be worth it once it's fixed.

Sounds like a personal problem and this ain't Genmay.

Then it's too much for you to handle so give it up and go play on a console ....

Only thing you are missing ostensibly is a brain and central nervous system.

That is a testament to my strength of will, as I am still able to think, type and make reasonable arguments without going all vegan rage. All this with absolutely no central nervous system. Pretty impressive, no?

I think you hit on the import part here. There is a possibility of being a pain in the ass, but for the vast majority of people you double click, game plays.

With 5850's going for sub $150, I'd say it's a buyers market. It's obviously becoming less and less cost prohibitive to be a hardcore or enthusiast gamer.

Learn the difference between wisdom and intelligence, and then, maybe, one day we may have words to share.

Maybe the OP is just going through a "down" phase of depression. Every now and then I curse (at) my computer and say I'm never upgrading again because it's too much hassle. Then, not even three months later I'm looking in the [H]otDeals sub-forum for new components. To each his own.

There are many other factors involved (like problems in real life) that can skew your perception of value. If things are tough and you want to "just insert disk and forget about it" then at least you have options. Everyone else can continue to choose their own option, too.

Who do you think you guys are telling me to quit PC gaming because it's a pain in the ass? Quite frankly, I enjoy the tedium; however, that doesn't somehow magically make it not a pain in my ass.

I install games, run said games and either let it auto detect settings or I turn them on Low because I don't care about graphics, dragging a few sliders to the extreme left isn't "hard work"

Side note, if you are unable to install a game and play it smoothly with your system then you have issues
