Ive searched inet and couldnt find anything. Im looking for a good review of P35 vs 680 motherboards.

Also would be cool if you guys recommended something :)

(QE6700, 4GB RAM 1066, 6 SATA RAID 10, 8800GTX no SLI planned)
 
Some P35's can use DDR3. P35's are also 45nm ready from what I understand. It is unknown whether that's the case with the 680i.

There are no reviews on the P35 and due to NDA's in place there won't likely be any real reviews on the chipset or any boards using it until the 21st. The general rule is that if you aren't going to use SLI there is no reason not to use an Intel chipset based board. Also it is widely known that the 680i SLI performs about 1-3% worse than the Intel i975x/P965 Express chipsets in some tests and slightly better than others. Anandtech did a DDR3 article and used the P35 as the test platform. They didn't go into details about the platform itself, but they did state that there is certainly a slight performance improvement in the memory controller (up to 5%) over that of the P965 Express chipset. We can therefore conclude that the P35 will likely out perform the 680i at least some of the time.

That alone is a serious reason to consider getting a P35 based motherboard over the NVIDIA 600 series chipsets. However, if you want SLI then of course NVIDIA is the only game in town. I don't mind saying I've though about ditching the 680i and going back to my P5W DH and a single video card due to some of the problems I've had in the past with the 680i.

They may not have had an NDA with Intel as they might not have an actual relationship with them. It's difficult to say.

My roommate just went through two 680 MB's and couldn't get either to work right with 4GB of RAM. So he switched to a intel 965 chipset and all is well.

Yeah I think Anand poster his yesterday was a pretty good read I think Bear lake sounds pretty promising for a temporary upgrade, much better than anything currently available. Sounds as if it invalidates p965 all together.

I'll probably pick one up for the 25% free overclock.

From my understanding, some of the review sites and the general public, myself included, went out and bought a board from a retail outlet before ever signing the NDA, they are free to post what they like. I myself have a P5K Deluxe on the way and will post initial results some time soon.

Seems this is the bios setting to help vcore:-
CPU Voltage Damper option in bios reduces vcore droop by as much as 75%. From approximately 0.032v droop to 0.008v droop! Finally, Asus answers our prayers in regards to vcore droop

i've got both boards and i definitely prefer the P35 - Asus P5K-Deluxe.

cooler chipset/mosfet - heatpipes work well
more stable even before it's offically released and on stock bios
8-phase power on the P5K-DLX anyway
ich9r SB instead of nvidia heap of poo
penryn 45nm cpu support

i'd only recommend 680i to anyone if you need SLI.

Poor location of DIMM slots. Poor arrangement of PCIe and PCI expansion slots. Extremely poor placement of the SATA ports. The IDE port is in the worst place possible and ASUS needs to quit putting all the USB and Firewire connections so far back. Most cases have those ports in the FRONT not the BACK! ASUS WTF?

I've hammered ASUS about this in some of my reviews and will continue to do so for stuff like what I mentioned above. The A8N32-SLI Deluxe was hammered on several points for layout specifically. I'd hammer this one pretty bad for it too. I mean ECS and other companies usually only have one or two layout mistakes. I can forgive one or two most of the time but three or more is just inexcusable.
 
While the layout issues you mentioned are somewhat trivial (to some ;) ). At least the ATX connector is on the edge of the board unlike Epox and Biostar boards who insist on putting the ATX connector on the far side of the CPU socket.

where do you want the dimm slots lol?

i agree with some of your points to a certain degree but with any layout you're never going to please everyone.

the only thing that's bugged me so far is the placement of the sata ports, with a big card like the 8800GTX it's extremely hard to get access to the 2 top ports, you could easily take out a loose capacitor on your card messing about with the ports.

i did like the power and reset buttons on the 680 board too, but with the crash free bios there's less messing about because you never need to reset CMOS so you don't miss them too much.
 
kinda boggles my mind how 680i and 650i support 1333 but nobody is sure if it can support 45nm. Why hasn't nvidia come out and said anything?

Probably because Intel hasn't released much info on it to them yet.

Basically, until Intel puts a 45nm processor in the 680i or Nvidia gets there hands on one and puts it in the 680i, I doubt we will ever know the answer.

So they can tell you that the p35 will support them but cant tell you if a 680i can support it.

Heh, that's a good point. They must know whether the 680i can support it, then, but just chosing not to tell us. An indication that it won't support it.

There is no telling. I think that NVIDIA is going to hold off on saying yes or no to 45nm until those chips are released. It may also be that the chipst will support the new CPUs but there will have to be changes in the motherboards power design in order to accomodate those newer CPUs.

Intel knows what those requirements are. That doesn't mean they've released that information to other chipset makers.
 
How come same board can use DDR2 & DDR3, because DDR3 has different pin layout.
 
I don't have a modle number, but there is a board that supports both.. not at the same time. Like the ASRock dual-vsta does with ddr/ddr2

That is the board I want...which CPU fan is it that you have. I looked up the scythe infinity on Newegg and this CPU fan shows up. Is this the one you used and did you need to remove the Crazy Cooler? I believe the crazy cooler is removable based on the manual on the Gigabyte website.

Here is the link for the scythe infinity http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185027 and you dont have to remove the crazy cool because the heatsink uses push pins (which are a pain).
 
I haven't heard good things about the push pins on the Scythe products. The mounting is weak (obviously compared to a screw down design), plus it's not all that easy to install.

Yeah, a lot of people mod their Infinities with a screw-down system. In fact i had a guide saved somewhere.. i guess i don't anymore.

As far as the 680i supporting the 45nm I'm doubting it. That'd be a very positive continued selling point for futureproofing if they did, and we'd be seeing it right on the front of the mobo packages with bright letters and exclamation points if it were the case. I've no doubt that Nvidia already knows this, I mean c'mon do you think they don't work very closely with Intel when developing these types of things? Even if they are competitors, regardless in most senses they are also customers of Intel's to some degree.

Now, assuming they don't know, I doubt Intel worked really hard to make these chips compatible with their competitors chipsets, what's their motivation?

Both DDR 2 and DDR 3 are notched quite differently. you can't use either in the wrong slots.

I was actually talking to my dad about this, who worked on bear-lake (P35). The chipset is still under the NDA, but Asus and gigabyte sold some of their boards as pre-release samples, which is why it's so hard to get your hands on one.

Those guys already have P35s being reviewed and overclocked. They sound amazing. 65nm chipset structure, cold compared to 965P, and handles incredibly high FSBs with lower voltages than 965P. I'd wait for X38, but it's not projected to be released till September.

Also, like someone else here stated, the P35 chipset does support new 45nm processors (Wolfsdale and Yorksfield), but the 680i will not. This is becuase intel has changed power reg chip standards again for their CPUs. VRM 11.1 is now going to be replacing the already newer VRM that was required for Conroe :( . But that's all hearsay. I haven't seen anyone on xtremesystems get their hands on a yorksfield or wolfsdale yet (I treat this as fact that Yorksfield//Wolfsdale isn't out yet is because these guys got conroes weeks in advanced to the product release and veiling)

To also address someone saying why intel would have their chip run on a competitor's chipset. I believe a while back, Intel had said they'd try to stay out of the chipset market because they were turning into a monopoly or destroying sales for chipset makers... or something along those lines. Intel does actually benefit if their processor runs on another chipset. They don't get accused of being a monopoly and they can also hit a larger consumer base. Plus, they still get their chip sold :)

Yeah the ram is slotted differently but from what I was reading in the article about the board that accepted both it didn't look like it had more than 4 ram slots...

I was assuming the slots themselves just weren't keyed making them universal or something. Just a hunch on my part a guess if you will.

I might've just gotten the wrong impression from the article though, probably. Either way the board accepted both DDR2 and DDR3.
