Just got my power bill.

It was $160 last month.
This month it is $280 :eek:

OMGWTFBBQ!

Know the AC has been running, but come on. Best I can figure the Rigs cost about $75+/- to run.

This heat is a bummer, and it is only going ot get worse. I should probably get a new HVAC for the house. This one says Sears and Roebuck on it :p

 
Think you could get me a new HVAC unit while you're at it??? :p

Now I don't want to know what my power bill is at. This house is insanely inefficient in design and there have been summers were the bill topped over $400 even though it is a very small house. By comparison my friend who has a HUGE 5 bedroom house with a cathedral ceiling living room doesn't get near that. Central air running with t-stat set at 76 degrees, and window unit on top floor running on full blast for my computer room.
 
my HVAC is circa 1973..... I think I got ya beat!

I have to have it replaced as well, my HVAC guy quoted me on some train units at about $5K which isnt terrible and he works for the school where I work too, so he does free labor for fellow employees, which is awesome. I cant have it done until next year after tax returns. Friggin $180 a month right now in electric, house runs at 83F to keep the HVAC from turning on ALL the time and my house is only 1100sq ft. Go figure!
 
Damn. That's a hell of a bill. :eek:

I'm gonna be hurting when I get out of the Army and move off post where I'm actually going to be paying my utilities, hah.
 
I saw a nice jump when I moved from my studio apartment to my 1 bedroom, $45 bills to $160 ones. This was also the same time I started gpu folding lol.O well, this is the price we choose to pay.

 
My bill this month was $332. Last month it was $139. The diffference mostly was school let out and the family is staying home all day with it nice and comfy. Wifey asked if I wanted to back off the folding and I asked her if she wanted to turn out all the lights nobody is using.;)
 
Ah the cost of folding. I'm waiting (but certainly not hoping) for Mrs Otter too see our most recent electric bill .... buck 50 ... normally 80. See watches too much TV that draws more power from the wall than it should. :D
 
really can't remember last time i saw our light bill as low as kendrak own :( . wish we had cheap power here :(

If I don't have ya beat, I'm a close second. Hose was built in the mid 50's, so the potential is there.

The thing sucks up power like crazy.
 
I had to shutdown my 2 Core i7 rigs. they were getting way to hot. just folding video cards now. I don't AC my machines though. I keep them in a utility closest that's on the patio. save moneyz!
 
My house was built in 48 and is as energy efficient as a shack. Bugging the wife to finish cleaning up the closet (the only spot in the house with attic access) so I can re-do the insulation. But there is absolutely nothing in the walls.
 
My house was a 1943 build. And 90% of the house is still dated to that 1943. I havent even been up in the attic yet to see what it looks like, and im afraid to find rotted 2x4's holding up my roof. The only new thing to my house is the master bedroom which was a porch but was gutted and turned into a giant room. I should get some pics of the stuff for ya! Oh and might I add, pretty much NO insulation to speak of! Biggest advantage though..... PLASTER! Man the walls in my house are TUFF! I mounted an lcd in the living room, and between the plaster and the studs, I dont even think, even if I hung off it and added that extra 280 pounds (I lost 10, YAY!) it would ever come out!
 
My bill runs about $115.

I don't have A/C, I have open windows! And a cool basement!

My power bill increased from 160$ to 199$ this month. That's normal considering the high temps this year.
It's been over 90f every day for the last 2 weeks. From calculating the estimated power draw vs the 7¢/kWh, my folding should be costing me 26$ a month.
However I had to replace 2 ac units this spring, ( I don't have central air) so the higher effective cooling from the new units have offset the cost of my computer going full out 24x7.

I am going to have to change out the office unit, its reaching 88f in there and the ac is blowing almost 100%. 6000btu isn't enough it seems.
 
I had a nice long chat with EA about his split system. I'm waiting for the estimate for the split system for my new house. This is going to be the only way I can do it. My current home is a one story and the thermostat is right next to my current home office. Let's just say our bill is a little higher than your bill.

New house is a two story and my office is now on the second floor (heat rises). It does have 2 separate zones for HVAC, but I do not want my home office to affect the HVAC for the second floor. Only way is a separate system for that room. I really, really hope the estimate for the split system isn't too bad.


 
Split systems are much easier to install than central air. The labor costs shouldn't be too high for your install. If the price is right you won't regret doing it for your office/computer room.

I have plans for some HVAC and folding madness, but I don't yet have the funds.

My house has ground-source heat and cooling. My highest electric bill this winter was $100.87 with my main rig running full steam on SMP and 2x 4890s on Collatz, plus running the heat pump. I had to put a new water heater in this spring so I had them install extra fittings and a valve so I could plumb in a tankless(on demand) water heater after the tank-type heater.

There is a pump and a loop that goes from the water heater to the heat pump that allows the heat pump to dump waste heat from the air conditioner into the hot water heater.

My plan is to plumb into this line with an additional liquid-liquid heat exchanger and run a PC watercooling system through the heat exchanger. If I allow my WC loop to run fairly hot, I can use my PC to pre-heat all of my hot water to ~110-120 F for free, both in summer and winter, then the tankless heater just evens out the fluctuations in temp. In winter sometimes I can switch things around and use 50-60F water from the ground pipes to do some low temp OC runs.

My family demanded that I turn on the AC. I waited until about 10 pm before turning on the AC. This is the first time I have used it this year. Yesterday was the first 90+F day of the year.

I've only had one day I can remember in the past two weeks which wasn't 90+ and that was yesterday. It wasn't bad until the other night when the a/c died. Since then it's been mostly mid to upper 90s with moderate to high humidity. I'd say I was sweating my balls off but I'm pretty damn sure they already left to go north for the summer. :eek:
 
My bill should be coming in a few days..... not looking forward to it... May was $155.

Where are you located? I keep my Central AC on most the time, but leave it set at 76-77..I use a small 5,000 BTU window unit in my office, since it has windows on three sides:mad:..As for yesterday, we set a record high here, 97F, with a heat index of 107F...

The sad thing is that 4.5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean..You'd think we would get some breeze..not.:rolleyes:

 
I'm in Idaho Falls, Idaho. We rarely get over 100F. But lots of 90+F days, although only one so far this year.
 
last year I had 3 months of $500+ electricity bill for a 3bd apt. Luckily I moved cause it was a 3 story. Now I'm in a flat and avg about $200-250. It's not as bad if I could split the bills with a roommate like I used too.

I like the way you think, man. I've always thought about how cool it would be to maximize the efficiency of the energy needs of your house. Take a total systems approach like what you describe. Throw in some of your own power generation (wind or solar) capabilities and watch the energy bill just die. In the right climate, you could build a house with this philosophy and I would guess it would be fairly easy, if ya had the money to do it!
