Lots of toxic people playing this game. I really do miss the olden days of online games. Sure, people could be mean and it was mostly expected.. But these kids these days are less mean/trashtalking and just annoying. That or maybe i'm just older and don't get it anymore. Do all versions of this game play together? I'm noticing a large crowd of people playing this game more so then other PC games that have that console trash / Halo trash quality to them.

Definitely not cross-platform multiplayer. There are a ton of people playing on PC, though, so you're going to have a lot of idiots based on the number alone. I also feel like this game has brought in a lot of players from notoriously toxic communities like DOTA and LoL (where you get called every bad word under the sun for being new or making a minor mistake).

The game has seven million players total in all three platforms so you're definitely going to run into toxic players. When you do, just report them and if enough reports accrue their account will get banned or some kind of strike.

Don't forget about the "avoid" feature - if you go into social and then "recent" players, you can right-click any player out of a list of...I don't know, 50 or 60, and choose "avoid"(and I think there's a "prefer" as well but I can't recall). The matchmaker will try not to match you with people you've requested to "avoid".

Nope, pc only plays pc but I find the pc has been way more toxic than consoles for a while now. I find way more angry teens and assholes who just want to troll people on the pc. Sure you have to hear more 10year old squeaky voices on consoles but much less rude people and 75% of them just don't say anything. Problem is every pc has a keyboard and everyone on it has the pc tough guy attitude because there's nothing you can do about it. Consoles you can report people and they do actually do something about big jerks that get constant complaints. My friend use to trashtalk all the time till he got a 48 hour chat suspension on Xbox live lol (I have a gaming pc, Xbox one and ps4 so I have no platform preferance just for referance)

Are you experiencing toxic players with higher ranks? I just started playing, <10 rank, and for the few hours I've played no toxicity in fact really no communication at all, voice or chat.

Liking the game though, except I can never get any love at the vote at end of match (which is meaningless).

People might have different thresholds of what is considered "toxic."

Something to consider is how much today's idea of being "toxic" is similar to the general trend in society of people being ore easily offended or at least willing to bring up they are offended.

I know some people complain that things such as the winning team saying something like "gg ez" or similar is toxic but really is that even at all something to care about?

The only behavior I'd really consider toxic I have seen so far is this one off situation where a Symmetra placed the teleporter intentionally in a location to trick the team into running out of it and off a cliff. But I generally have a pretty high tolerance for name calling related stuff.

I haven't really seen many players I would say are "toxic" in terms of language or just being obnoxious. More than anything the problem is that people are incredibly selfish and only want to pick attack characters when your team is getting steamrolled because you have no healers or tanks. But DAT 50+ KILLCOUNT LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Don't get me wrong...I understand wanting to play different characters. But when I'm forced to switch to a healer - EVERY. FUCKING. GAME. - because no one else will when our team is getting destroyed...that is not a fun experience for me. I don't mind being a healer a fair amount of time but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who NEVER play any class other than fucking McCree or Reaper or whatever.

Overwatch is a hugely fun game, imho. It's the first game in a long time that's had me lose track of time and suddenly realize it's 4 AM and my shift starts at 8:30

On the subject of toxic players: No matter where you go in today's gaming world, you will come across toxic players. WoW has toxic players. Candy Crush Saga probably has some sour players. League is pretty much entirely populated by angry 12 year olds with a stick up their posteriors.

I do agree Drawmonster a couple posts up: Overwatch is actually really tame in terms of toxicity. I'm finding the biggest issue is that people are trying to play this like Call of Overwatch: Battlefield 7, where the onus is on solo strategy and kills. Breaking that mindset has been a gradual process, but in the past two weeks I've noticed at LOT more escort and capture games getting tighter and tighter in combat and strategy as people realize that heroes like Soldier 76 and Reinhardt, or Symetra and Tracer, synergize really well and can play off each others' strengths. One of the things my buddies and I do is I play "gnat Tracer," buzzing around being REALLY annoying to the enemies, get them chasing me, then lead them through a 7 turret tunnel-o-death set up by Symetra :D

Can you embed gfycat here? I don't see a way offhand. Anyways, a lot of people I know don't know about being able to do this

Oh it auto embeds, neat. This window is pretty useful, especially as Reaper. If you're a god you might be able to hit it with D'va from a launched shot

Having never really played one of these team-based shooter games before, I'm going to try and get a lot of practice with bots before I hop into a game and screw the pooch for other players.

Are most people playing with microphones online? My setup isn't super conducive for that, although the Xbox One controller headset seems to be functional on the PC. I'm assuming I could still play KB/M and use the controller for audio if I had to...right?

With randoms I have seen very little mic usage. As long as you try to promote synergy by choosing complementary characters, you can do alright.

Random matchmaking with this game has been hit or miss for me though, mostly miss if I'm being honest. I actually play a fair amount of AI matches because it's generally more fun.

Overwatch: Blizzard answers the big questions

Competitive play! Server tick rate! Balance! More! ...

Overwatch: Blizzard answers the big questions

LOL @ this part:

The other thing that we did, after that video, is we actually added what is called a 'high bandwidth option' to our custom games, that allows players to play at a 60Hz update rate. We wanted to explore what the game would be like at 60Hz, so that way, we could explore if it's possible for us to try other versions of the game with this update rate. What we've been trying to do is encourage players to play with it. It's kind of ironic that they're demanding it, it's in the game and playable, and right now we're seeing about 0.08 per cent of all matches that take place in Overwatch are actually using the feature.

I've heard a lot of players say "god dammit, Blizzard, just add it to quick play". It would be wildly irresponsible for us to add that to something like quick play or competitive without getting more testing on the feature. This is something that you care about and you want to see more of: well, please use more of the feature that's in the game. Give us feedback, so we can iron out all of the kinks with it and if things are looking good, we can absolutely add it to other parts of the game.

People don't want to play custom because you don't get ranking or XP, so you don't get the loot boxes that Blizzard dangles in front of your face. What a bunch of disingenuous crap, lol.

Well... it is kind of two things - much like food can be salty or sweet, you get one thing to pull you into the other. Everyone loves leveling up - and then there's loot boxes to pull some RNG into the mix.

No dealer's supposed to be honest with you though, so c'mon man... ;)

This game is a team based shooter. It plays almost exactly as if Team Fortress 2 and Shadowrun (the amazing FPS from a few years back) had a baby game. Don't spend too much time in the AI mode, you really learn best in this game by putting your feet to the fire. Get in there, fail and you'll learn your style quick.

As far as MIC goes, not much in pick up games. I use MIC a lot with playing with friends, but thats hard to do as an adult. So you're fine without one, but this game comes into itself when playing with a team of 6 people on headsets :)

The boys and I are playing this and as it turns out, I'm liking the game. I generally play the healer, (the one with wings that heals or boosts damage), and seem to be doing ok with it for now. Although when the Rineheart dies, I seem to get smoked pretty quick...

For some reason Mercy is like my least favorite healer. She just seems SO limited compared to the other healer classes.

Lucio is my go-to, and I really like Zenyatta but his movement speed and health are way too low.

I'm trying to work on MEI. Shes fun

I love Mei. She's my third most played character behind Reaper and Mercy. I'm still not great with her, but she's a blast to play. If I have people on the other team say stuff like "fuck Mei" I know I played a decent round with her lol. She's seriously annoying to go against when someone knows what their doing.

I think if you melee someone it should stun them slightly, like Mei trying to freeze you, if you melee her, she should stop using her freeze ray for a bit.

Informative interview with Blizzard bigwig Jeff Kaplan here. He talks about the tickrate controversy, the upcoming McCree fan-the-hammer nerf, the forthcoming D.Va changes and some other interesting stuff.

I like all the healer classes, Mercy is my favorite. Zooming all around the map and flying side-by-side with a friendly Pharah is a lot of fun. In my opinion, she is the most powerful and flexible healer. Her blaster can't be overlooked either.

But she also does well when paired with Lucio. Lucio providing area-of-effect heals on groups of teammates while Mercy applies pocket heals on tanks and focused damage buffs on attackers. Don't be afraid to run two healers in this game, it can be very effective in many situations.

It's funny how when any other developer releases a shooter it's met with a combination of; "No dedicated servers!, No server browser!, No mod support!, No user-created maps!, Only a few game modes!, No campaign!, Matchmaking matches premades with solo players!, etc.". But when Blizz releases a game no one gives a shit and buys it up in droves further showing the other developers that gamers don't care about those options.

I guess that's what happens when you make a game that hits it out of the park on just about everything including the fun category.

Blizzard and CD Projekt Red get a pass on everything

Wasn't a full priced game, and the beta showed me exactly what I was getting. Can't complain, as for a casual shooter (which is all I have time/skill for these days anyway) this game is just fun and easy to jump into.

Are you looking at the base game? They try to push the Origins edition for $60 but there is a $40 version as well.

Some of those have been brought up by reviewers (specifically the few game modes and maps) but yeah, valid points. I think the matchmaking/dedicated server stuff is less important for this game because the matches are so short. User-created content would be awesome but nowadays it's amazing if a game gets that at all. If you didn't play games without mod capability you'd be playing...pretty much just Bethesda titles. It sucks but it's such a minority now I doubt complaining is going to do anything significant.

Also there has been a LOT of talk about the microtransactions/loot box "dangling carrot" system by various personalities on YouTube.

A lot of those complaints were made about other games because they were part of series with long histories of including those options, or in some cases the series themselves were built upon those options. In this case, Blizzard is taking its first foray into the FPS market and they gave everyone the chance to check it out beforehand. If you gave me TF3 tomorrow and it was this same format I'd tell Valve to go fuck themselves, as TF2 was built upon community created content and community support.

OW does have dedicated servers; just not community-run dedicated servers. If this game was P2P it wouldn't have gotten nearly the same reception it did. Jeff Kaplan has actually been saying they'd like to have a server browser and that it's something they're looking at:

Well, we really want to add a server browser someday but it's a non-trivial task for us so it's not on the immediate horizon. I just like to clarify sometimes because people leap to the conclusion that "Blizzard is opposed to XYZ" which isn't always the case. We are actually big fans of adding a browser (we think it will blow custom game open)... it's just a lot of work and not our top priority. So yes, we want to add the feature but it's not coming very soon (trying to manage expectations here...). Make sense?

Modding and community servers are something we'll likely never see for OW, but I guess you never know. A campaign I could not give two shits about; I play online FPS for the satisfaction and fun of battling other players - killing bots doesn't interest me at all.
