Official Galaxy Nexus Thread

The thing that's making me consider returning mine is the fact that it's not "next gen" hardware per say. It's like building a new PC today and putting a I7 920 in it. Might be a bad example, but I think you get the idea. Kinda seems like this phone wasn't thought out completely. They should have paired the highest possible current hardware with the newest version of Android. But they used older hardware instead, and are trying to sell it by pushing ICS.

I can see a really bad ass phone, hardware wise, being released soon, getting ICS, and being THE android phone. And GN adopters would be left with a lackluster phone with ICS. Like I stated earlier, I really like the phone, but it's just not that big of a difference over my Droid X with Liberty on it.

Did that happen to the Nexus One?

You all need to stop bickering over minutiae. The only diff between the G-Nex and GS2 is the GPU. Their both Cortex A9 CPUs and the GPUs are actually pretty comparable. This post does a good job explaining the differences between the hardware and what the trade-offs are.

My G-Nex is exponentially better in every regard than my OG Droid, so I'm really happy with it so far. There is occasionally noticeable lag when switching apps and stuff, but it doesn't detract from the functionality or experience whatsoever, IMO. My co-worker with the Epic Touch (GS2 variant) put them side by side and they both performed about the same when switching apps and scrolling. Both were totally stock. I noticed his lagged a little in transitions too occasionally, so Zorachus' comparison is useless since he's running a custom ROM. If both phones perform about the same stock, then I would expect them to perform about the same with custom ROMs/kernels.

I downloaded that Volume+ app linked in this thread previously and it definitely addressed the volume issue. I didn't think it was way too quiet before, but it could definitely use a boost and that app did just that. The OG Droid is probably the loudest phone ever made, lol.. so I was kind of used to that too.

I have no qualms with the display. You can make out the slight pixelation when the screen is dim, but when on full brightness (which I'm not sure why people think it's not bright enough - it's damn bright at max, IMO) it's a pretty gorgeous display.

Battery life got me through a 9 hour work day with moderate usage (wordfeud, Gtalk and browsing occasionally) with 40% left after work. I got home and played with it non-stop for a few more hours before it finally shut off. I'm pretty sure it's too early to decide on battery life right now because it takes a few charge/discharge cycles for Android to gauge the remaining capacity accurately. Mine sat at 4% for a good 10 mins of constant usage before it dropped again, whereas on a full charge, I would be down to 90% in 20 mins or so of constant usage. I got the $25 extended battery on the way too though, so that should add another ~10% of life too it as well, plus I'll have a spare battery now :).

There are some legacy apps/games that need to be updated for ICS though. I've found a handful of apps/games that straight crash; Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies (both of these play for a few mins fine, then just stop responding/FC) and I actually had Google Maps crash the phone phone to a cold reboot last night while playing with it . Maps had an updated today though that only says "bug fixes for newer devices" in the change log, so hopefully the G-Nex was included in that.

Overall, I'm really glad I held out for this phone. It beats the crap out of the RAZR in terms of display quality and sense of speed (despite them both having OMAP internals). The Rezounds display might be a smidge better in terms of IQ, but the performance definitely doesn't seem as good when scrolling/zooming/transitioning. This browser comparison is indicative of what I found when testing those phones out myself. The only phone on the market that competes with the G-Nex is the Galaxy S2 variants, IMO. But even then, neither are overall better than each other, they all have their trade-offs.

And the GS2 with CM will then be slower....? There's a reason why we were all bummed when the final specs were released- let's face it, the Nexus isn't awesome because of its hardware which is reminiscent of devices released this past summer. The NFC, while cool, is totally useless without something like Wallet. The Nexus is cool because it's running ICS, and will receive quick updates going forward (like today!). Saying stuff like "just wait until we have some optimized code!" doesn't change the fact that we didn't get a OMAP 4470 (or comparable) like we were all hoping for.

Its a Nexus... I have google wallet on mine. Im honestly surprised there was talk that the delay was because of a Verizon/Google Wallet scuffle. If I was with google in that meeting I would have just said "Ok, just launch it" because who the shit is going to stop us from installing what ever the hell we want on a Nexus phone? Best of luck to that.

have you tried to use Wallet yet? You have no reason not to- Google will spot you the first $10. BTW- sounds like the Googlers got their new Nexuses (Nexi?) today- GSM flavor.

My biggest problem now is that there's no ROMs out yet. :|

I spent a few hours (ok, really half the day) customizing everything yesterday but I realized I'll have to unlock and root it anyways, so right now I'm sitting with an unlocked , NOT-rooted (still want to receive OTA updates) and a default UI that I don't want to put much effort into. D:

Well I'm torn. I like the phone, but its not that much better than my old Droid X after I installed the Liberty rom. I'm thinking it's not enough of an upgrade to justify keeping it for 2 years. I need a pretty subsantial upgrade to justify the $250 and the use of my upgrade. Gonna give it a couple more days before I.return it. But thats what im leaning toward.

And i typed this from my GN, and the autocorrect isnt working in the browser. :-(

I dont know. I have a droid x with liberty 2.0. It was super smooth and nice. But having a higher res screen is really nice along with a slimmer phone (no giant hump) fits nicely in my pocket. The browser alone blows the socks off any browser you use on the droid x.

I don't know if my droid x was going bad but it got really crappy battery life lately like dropping 20% in 4 hours just sitting in my pocket and it was always cell stand by or whatever using the battery (this is on the stock liberty 2.0 build no apps installed also on the stock rom). I bought a new battery same thing. Then I had problems with the sd card corrupting files.

Also I have the 150mb plan and its nice not to have to constantly turn the data on and off to keep from going over as I can just set the limit in ICS with out any additional apps.

I feel this is a pretty good upgrade for me. Although I really wish the screen was the rezounds screen, I was debating swapping it for a rezound but with no permanent root and all the bloat I think I will pass. It's nice to be the first to get updates. Honestly the stock rom in the droid x was junk for one whole year till it finally got the make over it needed and flashing roms was a pain in the butt with the locked boot loader, got to sbf to stock rom then update phone with stock rooted room, then flash to the rom you wanted. It basically took a whole year to get a decent phone. The nexus starts out as a great phone, who knows what kind of problems other phones will have switching to ICS and it will take them forever to fix them.

Being stuck with the phone for two years kind of sucks but I guess a benefit of being on a family plan is that my mom never uses her upgrades so I can pretty much upgrade once a year by using hers and mine.

Can anyone tell me if this phone will let me write texts or emails through voice recognition while I'm in the car through bluetooth? Siri is appealing to me because I can simply push the bluetooth button (or call button on my steering wheel) and start giving commands. Can I do this with the Nexus or do I have to pick up the phone and press a couple of buttons before being able to dictate?

I'm already unlocked, rooted, and have Clockwork Mod installed. I just flashed a mod that removed the stupid google search bar on the home screen. :D

Try it and let me know how it goes. :)

I have ADW Launcher Ex, which removes the Google search bar but I haven't played around with it enough yet. So far it feels pretty snappy and possibly quicker than the default launcher, but I don't know how well it's optimized. I actually like the default clear Google bar, the problem is I only want one of them. :|

Does ICS reserver memory you can't see? If I go to how much memory is free it shows 360 used and 330 free. Thats only 690mb, wheres the rest of the 1024mb?

It's a carve out for various hardware stuffs to use. This isn't new or unique to ICS. For example the Nexus S only ends up with with ~350mb available to the system iirc.

You don't need a mod (or root) for that, just go to the system settings -> apps -> all, find "google search", and disable it.

I'm running that custom rom, and it's pretty freaking sweet. Very fast. Battery life seems to be better. And the screen actually looks a little sharper. It's like the phone is supercharged, or at least unleashed. Just really nice overall. Much better than stock.

I also installed that mod to remove the search bar, as well as one that adds a custom search button at the bottom of the phone, and adds the settings icon to both sides of every app. I'm loving all this freedom. Really making me reconsider my early comments.

You don't gain the extra row back, unless that's changed, so that defeats the purpose.

The search box doesn't take up a row. The home screen still has the same amount of widget space as before, the search box didn't affect that.

But you can also just install a replacement launcher without a custom ROM. ADW Launcher EX (recently updated for HWA and it is really fast on the GN) or Launcher Pro, for example.

well after a few days i have zero gripes with the phone. i came from og droid. honestly the volume was a tad quiet for me as well. volume + app fixed that 100%. I take back my gripes about the screen. I was not used to the sensitivity of the auto brightness. now i like how it works. also downloaded lightflow, which is a really cool app for this phone.

i'll eventually go to a custom rom, but right now there is nothing else i'm left wanting. on a total side note it plays exceptionally well with my hotmail account which my og droid never did.

Well the mod gives you 5 rows vs. 4. This allows you to use all the screen real estate. Also notice the new search button, which is a seperate mod.

I was never a fan of layering a custom launcher over the stock one. Waste of resources. This phone was made to mod, and the custom rom and mods I've installed have really shown the true potential of this phone. I can forsee many hours spent tweaking and playing with this phone using custom mods and roms. Loving it so far.

Yea I went to CVS right after I installed it and got my $10 credit :p The cashier gave me a weird look when I pressed my phone up to the reader thing.

I can also vouch for Android Revolution ROM. Pretty slick. There is also an auto brightness and advanced power menu mod I installed, basically just to get the reboot and recovery options in the power off menu. I generally just set the brightness and leave it. The spot I have it at didoes seem to affect battery life much (granted it is OLED, so is there really going to be a big enough difference in power consumption across the range to affect it like an "old school" lcd? Im no expert on OLED.)

That's the next mod I'm installing. I want a "Reboot" option instead of just "Shutdown".

Picked mine up last night, they were out Thursday before I could get away from work.
Traded in my less than two week old Droid Razr, no fuss + $35 restocking fee, actually $36.## as they charged tax on that which surprised me. This was all at my local Verizon Wireless B&M Store. I had originally ordered from the vzw website.

Finally got to hold it without a security cable attached to the back, fits my hand better than the razr. The razr was very sleek, but felt boxy, whereas the gn just fits and is quite elegant. We will see how it feels once my otterbox defender gets here today. A shame to case the gn but it's a must for me, before it goes a flyin'

Getting ready to start a little foreplay with it right now, I have a Moto Elite Sliver bt headset to pair with it, which also has nfc, so we will see how that works.

I will say I liked the wall charger that came with the razr better, prongs folded and had two usb conns, where the gn charger prongs do not fold and only one conn.

I just did a few basic things on it last night, I did notice that the text keyboard is not as forgiving as the razr. meh, not overly so, we will see...

Im starting to wonder why people are buying them at B&M stores for 300$ when its only 150-200$ online. Whats the difference?

For me the lowest I could get was $250 because I'm on a family plan. So it makes no difference. I also wanted to go into the store and play with the phone first.

Same here. $250 is the best I could get. Verizon really takes care of it's loyal customers.

there are advantages to buying in the store from Verizon. Especially when there is an issue with the handset. Back when I had a Samsung Fascinate and it ended up having a mysterious missed call/missed text issue, if you called VZW and you bought it from them, they offered you a new Samsung Charge, HTC Incredible 2 or Moto Droid X2 as a replacement without modifying contract or anything, straight up swap, no cost. I went from the Fascinate to Charge for free, a $200 device to a $300 device and 3G to 4G and upgraded from 3G unlimited data to 4G unlimited data and all for no cost.

Those people who had purchased their phones through the means you mention, did not get that option. They were told they needed to use the insurance if they had a problem with their phone. Didn't pay for the insurance? Too bad. But if you did pay for it, Assurian was only offering a refurb replacement Fascinate to replace it. They were not offered a different phone.

So there are reasons and advantages to buying factory new from VZW.

I am thinking about buying the GSM version (according to items on sale at Amazon, it appears that there is a difference between the GSM version and the Verizon 4G LTE edition. IS this true? It was rumored that the same phone would have full GSM quad band cellular and data 3.5g plus LTE hardware for 4G compatibility). Can anyone confirm this is a proper "Nexus" phone (originally codenamed the Nexus Prime?) and the highest-end Android hardware kit thus far? The Nexus One and Nexus S were "pure" google experiences without any faffing about or attempted carrier/manufacturer lockdown (ie. No CarrierIQ etc...) is the Galaxy Nexus part of this same lineage, or is it more of the "Galaxy" lineage instead? I have to admit that I'm disappointed that so far, the GSM and LTE versions both, best as I can tell don't have Super AMOLED PLUS displays. If this is the new king-of-the-mountain why not put your best screen tech there? Finally, is there any other "Nexus" or similar phones on the docket coming soon into 2012? Pulling $700 out of my arse for this better damn well be worth it, so I'm starting a lot of research...

Edit: I'm seeing someone on Amazon selling a GSM variant with the model number "i9250" - can anyone confirm this is the "good" version? I remember back when looking for a Nexus S there was a model number that didn't have the AMOLED display and/or other changes, that came from some other countries. SInce it doesn't appear to be officially launched in the US, this seems to be an import at Amazon (or at least, comes from a vendor known to sell both import and local hardware), but I do want to ensure it is the high-end version.

I wonder.. if T-Mobile will be stocking the Galaxy Nexus, perhaps I could buy it paying in installments, interest free, without changing my plan. One great thing about T-Mobile is the ability to do that on EvenMorePlus plans... I'm glad that the ATT takeover has been at least temporarily pushed back.

Well, they did give it to you for 400 off. Im sure if you went back and asked them to charge you full price, since you are so unhappy with how little they do for you, they would be willing to oblige.

What does paying full retail price have to do with use talking about subsidized deals and the lack of them for family plan customers? Whatever makes you feel better about yourself, I guess.

$300 is a lot for a phone when the plan will cost you 10x that over 2 years.

Some people just bitch about anything. Im pretty happy with investing 249 in this thing. Hell i would have dropped more if nec.

$300 is nothing compared to what you will pay in service. Amortize that $300 across 24 months, 104 weeks.....it costs a whopping $2.88 a week to have a top of the line phone that does everything you want and need vs. getting crap for free.

The service is a fixed cost. You are going to pay that for the next two years regardless. Better to do it with a device that will have lots of life and are happy with. That's what gives Android phones a bad name, you can get a free Android phone and they are junk and you pay the same price for service so it's a terrible value and gives a terrible first impression for Android.

No one forced anyone to get one of the most expensive phones in the line up. There are free options. You pay for the high end stuff, works like that in every field. I have been a loyal intel customer for years, but i dont expect them to give me deals on the ultra high end shit i want.

Just picked mine up today.Still in foreplay mode but a HUGE improvement over my Droid Incredible.$208 out the door after trading in the Incredible, discounts etc...So far, pretty happy..Just waiting on my Transformer Prime to arrive now!

To all of you who think your phone's price is being "subsidized": compare two years of service from your current carrier to two years with a PagePlus plan and see how much you're really "saving". You're probably paying more than if you did prepaid/month-to-month even if you factor in an unlocked phone every two years. PagePlus uses Verizon's towers and resells the minutes to its customers, so service is identical to Verizon from my experience.

* No, I don't work for PagePlus, I just hate to see you guys being mislead, locked down, and accepting the status quo.

EDIT: I just realized this isn't really an apples to apples comparison since carriers also force you into a data plan, which PP doesn't really have. But if you don't need data, it works great.

They are being subsidized. You have to pay for service either way so either $650 for no 2 year contract and same monthly bill or $300 with 2 year contract and same monthly bill. There are no hidden costs that come on your bill. It is the same with or with out the 2 year service agreement.

Getting cheaper service else where doesn't mean its not subsidized by verizon.

Dude. "If you don't need data" in a thread about the latest Android smartphone? :p

I would drop my texts and just use GTalk, Email, etc or drop my minutes before I would drop data.

Well I picked mine up today from verizon for $250 (I had a $50 credit for some reason). It's a huge step above my OG droid. My only complaint is that the speaker could be louder. I use speakerphone while driving and I'm finding it to be tough to hear people.

Oh and 4G is sweet. I'm getting 25mbps down and 15mbps up. Seriously, that's better than my comcast service.
