Official Crysis 2 Thread

Someday in the distant future when we have Blade-Runner-esque flying cars and replicants, HAL9000 computers, interstellar warp drives, holodecks, and computer interfaces that skip the external senses entirely and plug directly into our brains some genius will discover the idea of saving the state of the game in a file that you can later access again so that you don't have to replay the same sequence over and over and over and over and over again. Gamers all over the world will be slapping their foreheads and wondering why no one had thought of this before.

As for the checkpoint argument that saving gamers from themselves makes them necessary, well just release a separate "no self control" or "kiddie" version of the game for those who would like to play the game with a certain style (ironman), but just don't have the discipline to pull it off. The 9 year old console kiddies who just can't help themselves from saving every microsecond can make sure their parents buy that version for them. One day when they get older, if they still have the time to play games, they might start to appreciate the value of not having to play through the same sequence 20 times in a row. For those console gamers who think that using checkpoints makes you badass try playing ironman (no saves at all) for a while. Then you can see what badass really means. I don't find that kind of gameplay fun because I detest repetition, but whatever floats your boat. When I was 9 years old I was also much more resistant to the annoyances of repetition, but eventually you do grow up. My 12 year old nephew was once able to watch the same movie literally 5 or 6 times in a row without getting bored. Now that he is 12 he can't do that anymore, but everyone matures at their own rate I guess. The nice thing about save games is that it can accommodate both console gamers or casual gamers without any self control and the older PC gamers who appreciate not having to replay the sequence we already played. The checkpoint system only accommodates one group but gives the other group the middle finger salute.

BTW, for you console gamers out there who only recently discovered it, the general idea is not called a "quick save". That's the simplified for console-tards version of game saves. Historically PC gamers have almost always had unlimited save game slots where you could actually type in a description of the save. Autosaves and Quicksaves were just conveniences to add on to the basic save game system. They were not intended to replace traditional game saves entirely. Calling them "quick saves" is already straw-manning the idea.

To be fair there *is* a version of Crysis 2 with quick saves. The leaked beta. CrEAtek pulled the quick saves from the game at the last minute probably figuring that PC gamers were going to mostly hate the game anyway and that console gamers prefer checkpoint saves anyway. Or maybe because Cevat Yerli now despises PC gamers as evil pirates and wants to give us the finger. Not that he hasn't already given us the finger with his dumbed-down consolized game. If he had any sympathy for his old core audience he have called his new console shooter Craylo or Cryers of War.

As I have said elsewhere, if you loved Crysis you probably won't like Crysis 2 much. If you hated it or found it "meh" you will probably strongly prefer Crysis 2. It was designed for a very different audience. The very same people who didn't much like their earlier game. If you have severe vision problems or just prefer console style graphics then you will prefer the graphics of Crysis 2 with its half-the-resolution-of-Crysis textures.

I agree with the above. Quick save is almost always used to the point where the game becomes trivial. Just run in guns blazing, if you die, you quick load and try again until it works. No strategy, no thinking, simply brute force, rush through as fast as you can.

That being said ... I just wish I could play the game, in crossfire, without flickering which makes the game unplayable. I tried to push through, with this annoying distraction, and got to the point where the freeway collapsed, but the dust which rises made the game appear like I was looking into a blinding strobe light. I haven't played the game since and I really wish I could obtain a refund.

Qualifier: I have tried the crossfire profile, and I have tried setting post-processing to medium and even turned it off all together but the flickering remains. It is so bad it will almost certainly turn me into an epileptic ... wait ... what is that I smell? ... burnt toast .. DOCTOR I SMELL BURNT TOAST!

The first Far Cry also only had checkpoint saves...

Checkpoint saves themselves aren't a problem for me, I can understand the desire to not have players take a step and then save, take a step and then save, etc. What I take issue with is handling checkpoint saves terribly; For example, if you're sneaking through an area where you'd be spotted if you weren't cloaked(but you are, of course), and you get through a checkpoint save, you'd better hope you make it to the next one successfully. If you don't, you'll be dropped in at the last checkpoint and immediately removed from cloak, at which point every enemy in the area will fill you with bullet holes. Fun times.

Exactly. Checkpoint saves are fine when they are handled right.

I'm freely admitting to a lack of social life by saying i finished it twice, the last being on the most difficult setting. I've read just about everyone's opinions on the game and respect them all. I can see how C1 spoiled the PC crowed and how the console crowd loves C2.

Gaming issues
If your still having problems with MP serial key, enter the key where it says modify, use no dashes and use lower case, that will fix always needing to enter it and IP in use.

AI like people said is a bit looney at times, found them to be slightly better on the hardest setting but not overbearing or any smarter. I've stood in front of aliens reloading while they just looked at me. Sometimes see two aliens doing the funky chicken behind a wall or playing pencils, not sure which.

I was hoping for a "destructable" environment ala BFBC2, i mean this is 2011, being able to hide behind a concrete barrier or NYPD station house while a Pinger blasts away at it to no avail is kind of a downer. But great for me because I can restore health, reload, drink beer and get back into the fight.

HURRY UP GO, HURRY UP GO, HURRY UP GO.....The never ending scream from guys who aren't even close to you. Wish i could have turned off my helmet headset or something. I wanted to commit harikari, each time i played this level. Please patch that for the people who have not played the game. It makes my ears bleed and i run as fast as i can to get them to stop staying it.

On the second go round i did see the drop ships out of the corner of my eye, if you don't see it you'll assume enemys have spawned. Plus the little wall crawlers like to be up high then drop down on you but I do think I saw the "doom wall" spawn a few times.

Hello Crytek...Patch the melee please. After you die you lose the ability to attack from behind with the knife or any melee for that matter. For me it comes and goes. One level i could not shoot, squat or melee, i had to run to another check point before it started working.

GamePlay

Actually it's enjoyable....I agree the suit is weaker than C1 but I do like the integrated command such as light tap for jump, long for power jump, ledging is cool as well. I hate the run setting, Prohet must have picked up the beta suit because it expends energy running just a regular run (lame). C1 was Hussien Bolt running, this is old lady trying to catch a bus running. I also started playing C1 again and found it hard to get all the key strokes down.

Story..meh. Can't say I could do much better but the towers goo thingy is...uninspiring to say the least. Total disregard for the C1 even changed the color of a C1 alien in a flash back. Who signs off on this stuff?

Sweet spot....when firing at squidy aim for the soft tissue..i'm sure you know this. When they gang up on you, put them in the choke hold you used on your wife last night...i mean like darth vadar did in SW IV, very effective.

Revenge and Betrayal for me was the best level and where I died the most. There's at least 4 different ways to attack the map from what I can tell and the troops are ready for you this time. Ramboing i'm sure is possible but I did a mixture of dink and dunk and R'bo, those little sneaky troopers will flank you, so tag'em then bag'em.

MP..i've played it, it's fun for a little while then it's not. I do however love faking someone out after they fire on me, see me crouch in cover and I send out a hologram as if i'm running away, then come out and light them up. It's priceless and possibly the best part of the game.

Overall, I enjoyed the game but there is a lot of room for improvemnt. I think BF3 will address most of what PC gamers are looking for in a FPS. A grenede launcher in BFBC2 to the corner of a building where a chump sniper is hiding out is priceless on so many levels.

Yeah, I've come across a few bugs that are really annoying.

One time while crouching the gun dislodged itself from my hands and started hovering in the middle of my screen.

During one of the drop ship battles I was swapping weapons a lot between temporary pick up weapons like the heavy machine gun and somehow lost my ability to change weapons at all.

Another time when I was supposed to be "following" the marines they just stood there looking stupid and I had to go on by myself and they kept talking to me as if there were with me when they weren't. I know they were supposed to be moving because I had restarted the checkpoint and they moved the previous time.

Several times there were graphics glitches where things just appeared black.

One cut scene toward the end of the game ran at like 2 fps despite good performance for the rest of the game.

There was a few other things along the way that I dont remember. Mostly just the interface fucking up.

EDIT: Oh, and sound stuttering and breaking up in loading videos even though its fine in the rest of the game.

You could enable quicksave though. And it was the kind of game where you had to bind quicksave and quickload to the left and right mouse buttons to get any where because the enemies had telescopic vision and would spot your bright shirt and make you occupy the same space as a million billion bullets.

Yeah I watch Yahtzee reviews as well :)

I remember in Call of Duty (1 or 2, can't remember correctly), where a checkpoint save was made at the same time some bullet was in mid-air, so every time I loaded that, my character immediately died. Had to replay the entire mission.

Still, checkpoints are a way to keep the challenge and immersion. Quick save every step of the way, kills that immersion IMO.

For a while I was saving the nano juice the aliens dropped to buy something good. Finally I bough the cloak upgrade and wow, it makes it possible to stealth through half the remaining part of the game.

Instead of only getting a few steps with cloaking before having to hide and recover energy you can pretty much wander straight past enemies and get to safety on the other side before your stealth runs out. In the mission where you get back to fighting CELL I decided to go the stealthy route and it was so easy, with a silenced gun I could bring down 3 guys before my energy ran out.

It also drastically reduces the challenge factor of the game.

Let's be honest now though. The purpose of high graphical detail immersive games is not challenge, it's to feel like your playing through a movie because of the graphical detail, sound, ect. Challenge is in many ways a net negative as it takes you out of the experience.

I think the best thing is just do it how Crysis 1 did it. Have the checkpoints, sweet, but then also allow for manual saving. This means you can play through and have all the immersion and challenge you desire, but if you die at a point and get thrown back to a checkpoint, when you pass that point a 2nd time you know to save so you dont have to do it a third, fourth and fifth time.

Yeah, manual saving breaks immersion, but so does replaying the same fucking checkpoint 5 times killing the same fucking swarm of aliens 5 times because you can't figure out how to beat the big tough dude who lives at the end of those swarms right before the checkpoint flicks.

They had it in Crysis 1, it worked in Crysis 1, I dont understand why they had to change it. Change the things that didn't work, not the things that did work... and here devs wonder why we bitch about change, because they keep changing the things that worked well to things that sort-of-kind-of-do-but-not-really work.

The one sad thing that will happen for sure is that in one year no one will remeber Crysis 2 but Crysis 1 and Warhead will still be discussed :) I'm quite sure about that.

i couldn't agree more. you should give the player as many options as possible ( gameplay, graphics, savings). he will choose the ones which suit him

That's not really true. Hardware enthusiasts that only really cared about DX11 and having a game only they could play and gloat about, ala Crysis 1, will not be talking about the game.

On the other hand on pure gaming forums, you know where mid range cards are the norm and people don't really give a rats ass if you cant fully load 3 gpus, people are loving the game.

And those people, make up the majority of gamers. ;)

you own an xbox don't you?

out of curiosity I've checked out some 360 forums and it seems the general consensus is positive. They think crysis 2 has the best graphics yet on 360 and are happy it's something different then Halo or CoD. It seems Crysis 2 sales should be pretty good.

It's kind of funny they that they mentioned pc forums, where everybody is going nuts about the graphics, no dx11, and console port.

too bad crytek didn't put effort into pleasing pc gamers also, but that's just life now with pc games.

The 2nd half of the game is way better then the first half imo and i'm about 4/5 into it.

you own an xbox don't you?

I own 4 SLI gaming PCs, an xbox360, a PS3, a Wii, a ton of older consoles, several arcade machines, and some old DOS gaming PCs as well.

I don't really prefer any platform, they all have their ups and downs. But Crysis 2 is a worse benchmark tool than Crysis 1, but it's a much better game. On system agnostic forums (ie they have both consoles and PC gamers) even the PC gamers like the game.

On hardware forums, they hate it.

Crytek clearly put a lot of effort into the game, so gamers on any platform should be pleased. It's the best FPS I've played in a long time. The issue some so called "hardcore PC gamers" (i.e. fun-hating benchmark obsessives) have is that Crytek gave them the moon on a stick with Crysis, and in Crysis 2 they decided it was better to focus their efforts on making a game that a bigger audience could enjoy.

And you'd be hard-pressed to call these people PC gaming enthusiasts. An enthusiast is someone you would expect to be much more critical about games (and not just in terms of graphics) and less receptive to a bland gaming experience than someone who simply plays PC games from time to time.

Go to a beer brewing forum and ask the people there how they feel about Pabst Blue Ribbon. You'd expect a very poor response to such a question, right?

Well said.

Softcore gamers rejoice!! 4 years later, we have a technically inferior product that lacks options and features that we have come to expect. Much was promised by Crytek, sadly the game doesn't live up to the bar they set.

Crysis was perfectly playable on lesser hardware when you scaled down the graphical options. In Crysis 2, you have to download a 3rd party app to even come close to tweaking the settings in a way similar to the first.

Checkpoints also do not belong in this type of game

this is a good analogy (coming from a beer enthusiast). also PBR is shit.

So you're saying that people who buy games like crazy off steam and have been gaming since the mid ninties and clock in hours a night in clans, competitions, et all are not "enthusiasts", they are!

And Crysis 1 was a rather bland experience. The AI was horrid, it was extremely easy no matter what the difficulty, it wasn't all that original, it had check point saves, it was insanely linear, the list goes on.

It's only fellated because it crushed systems, and Crytek admits that was one of the problems with it.

Absolutely wrong. I was actually pissed that I had to run the game at medium to get even playable framerates, but the story more than made up for it. The only thing that made me mad about the story was that it was so short. Now that rigs are much more matured, I can still go back and play that game and have a good time.

Crysis 2? Meh. Not at all. Checkpoint save bullshit system, subpar graphics, circa 1990 textures, Call of Duty storyline, stupid AI even at the highest level, I can go on and on.

You want to call it a good game, fair enough. Just don't call it Crysis.

Yeah, until a company with more balls then Cryek comes out with the next revolution in computer graphics and the xbox gets crushed so hard, so completely, that even console idiots will not be able to ignore it. Kids will rush towards the PC again and companies like Crytek will be made to look like imbeciles. Everybody is so obsessed with short term profits that nobody sees the big picture anymore.

Nobody is going to run back to the PC as long as it requires a giant desktop to run it. Maybe if they could pull those graphics off on your average laptop or average small desktop that people actually buy it will happen. But people are just not buying large desktops anymore, those days are over for the vast majority of consumers.

It won't matter how good the game is if it's on a platform nobody wants.

People whos main interest is Angry Birds wouldn't be into Crysis in the first place. Some of these posts are starting to smell like THG posts.

Those days are over only because there are no games capable of taking advantage out of the most advanced hardware. One such game and large desktops will become popular again. You can't expect people to be interested in powerful PCs only to play console ports.

LOL! Nobody wants a the shitty hardware in a console, it's cheap and convenient. I've had a few friends try out my sig rig having not played games on a PC in quite a while.

They didn't want their consoles anymore but they weren't going to spend $5k on their PC either.

You know the sad thing is? Cevat Yeril made the correct decision in make it for consoles and the PC table scraps. It just solidifies that PC gamers are a bunch of whiney little bitches. It's embarrassing as a PC gamer to see howmuch bitching my community does. I'll be honest the game didn't blow my socks off like Crysis 1 did. The only thing that was good was the explosions and structures on fire.

Judging by the sales and how well it did on the XBOX 360 expect the next crysis to be a console port. Battlefield 3 is the only game that I like that is still left as a PC execlusive game and not a Console port. May Go....Zultan help us PC gamers.

Yeah, imagine that, PC gamers complaining that their favored hobby is being butchered because of corporate greed. The nerve! We should all bend over and just take it up the back pipe like good, docile sheeple. Who do we think we are to demand that profit ought not get in the way of quality?

But greed is just a fact of life, from corporations to individuals and bitching won't change that. If PC gamers don't like what's becoming of gaming they need to find a way to make it worthwhile for someone to develop games they they will buy in large numbers instead of pirate to hell and back.

It's really that simple. No romance without finance as they say.

It's not as though things were all good and rosy when Crysis 1 was PC exclusive. No compromises with 2nd rate console ports, no "PC first, console second" slogan. Just straight-up for us and only us, with the best tech possible. Didn't change the fact that there was an overwhelming amount of bitching going on, at least here on the forums.

I understand what you're trying to say. But these guys haven't listen to us for YEARS. The more we bitch and complain the more we are ignored. Why? Because the console gamers are packing their pockets with money. The demograph has shifted to console games because there are more profitable.

I think I have accepted we will be treated a mediocre community now. The only thing PC excel in now are MMOs and Flash games.

The market has shifted and less and less developers are backing PC gamers. Id my favorite FPS company, is also going the console route. Duke Nukem Forever, console route. It's depressing to see this. But what can you and I do? They're going where the money is, and the money is in consoles. 80% of my 2010 games that I bought are console ports for the PC. Some of them are locked at 30 FPS and fixed FOV. Crysis 2 was supposed to change that, guess not. Those people who already predicted in previous Crysis 2 threads that it was a console port were correct and I was hoping and praying I would finally enjoy a PC exclusive game. Now the only PC game for 2011 that I am looking forward to is Battlefield 3.

Exactly. Some people are being overly nostalgic about it, there were constant complaints about the performance of Crysis 1 on good hardware of the time. Back then the posts were about how poorly optimized Crysis 1 was. Now it's too optimized.
