Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

I use the Kensington screen cloths and they work well. I also use some microfibre cloths and don't see this issue.

It might mean you need to wash that cloth. I don't see why the BenQ would keep dust more than a Dell.

I usually use a solution of distilled water 75% and isopraponal 25% and it works well, but I like to waste time on such trivialities. :)

Anyone any tips on cleaning this?

On my Dell i used a microfiber cloth and it did pick the dust up but it doesnt on this benq it all just stays on the screen.

Ive got a minor problem, every so often my screen will flicker and it just goes blank for a split second then comes back on?

That's the "blackout" problem. Looks through the thread to learn more. Seems to happen more with ATI cards.

Im picking up the FP241w on Monday. I'm currently using a 22" Acer 2216wbd which has served it's purpose but I want a good 24" with 8bit color that's good for multimedia/gaming. It seems hard finding a good 24" that isn't a TN nowadays.

the one on the top looks like a dead pixel, the other 2 dont. they are angled, like something smacked the monitor or dust got inside the panel or something.
somethings wrong there, but it really doesnt look like dead pixel marks. they are most always the size of the pixel itself, rarely looking like a fingernail

I picked up my FP241w on my lunch hour today. It has a Mfg date of May 2007. I'm going to be using this mainly for gaming/multimedia. PC hooked up through DVI and a PS3 hooked up through HDMI. What issues will I run into with the older firmware?

Thanks,

Over DVI it should work great.

Over HDMI the PS3 will be fine, except you will potentially have some overscan where the edges of the image are cut off slightly by about 5%, but it will work well otherwise over HDMI at 1080p.

How is the out-of-box calibration on the FP241W. I know you mentioned the FP241VW was pretty bad out of the box. Any ideas on the FP241w?

Well I just hooked it up and did some calibration on it, all I have to say is wow. This looks fantastic. I can't believe I used a TN panel for so long. Downloading some 1080p content right now for shits and giggles. Overall, i'm pretty happy, time to check out the PS3 and some gaming.

Is it true, that the hum with brightness < 80% is only present in some FP241W monitor, so it is worth to try to RMA it?
Thanks

Another question - should I adjust brightness level also by reducing R/G/B, or this is a no way to go?

OK, lets end my monologue. BenQ FP241W too bright, annoying transformator sound, black level crush, my eyes hurt, headache. Bye, bye, go back to the seller.

I just thought I'd post in this thread to say thank you for all the people who've contributed here. I've just received a FP241W from Ebuyer, picking it up from the delivery company's depot after lots of hassle. It looks great, and is obviously much better than the two Dell E248WFPs I'm using at work.

It is always great to hear that someone has finally found "its" monitor :)

Why in the world was the FP241W discontinued?? There seems to be a high demand, and BenQ told me that the refurbs sell as soon as they get them! Discontinuing then seems to be anti-logical.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks,

It's appears AU Optronics stopped making the MVA panel. Why they stopped making it is the puzzler. Maybe better margins on TNs...

Correct.

I think they stopped making both the V0 and V2 panels. The V0 was in the FP241W and the V2 with the black frame insertion was in the WZ, and is in the FP241VW. The first I'm sure of, but the second is mostly speculation ;)

Hi guys,

First post in this forum and is probably usually the case Im asking for help re this monitor..

Decided on this puppy as an upgrade to one of my current computers. Got it through the post the other day. It looks lovely when you take it out the box etc etc anyway I hooked it up and then my annoyances started :(. Im using it on my PC which has a GeForce FX5200 graphics card (a few years old I know, but im not planning on running modern games on it, just desktop stuff that doesnt require any visual beefcake power). I got the latest drivers for botht he monitor and graphics card all correctly installed, hooked up the monitor via DVI and away I went. Well to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. When I put it on the maximum and recommended resolution of 1920 by 1200 I have to scroll around the desktop to see everything?? I mean wtf, I dont want to scroll around, I want it all on the screen at once! Is there anyway to stop this or is this the norm? When I put it on the setting below, 1600 by 1200. Everything fits on the screen at the one time but it is stretched and looks pretty bad imo. Dont get me wrong, the monitor is working ok as in colours and brightness etc all fine, just the resolution looks like rubbish. All the settings below that make it look like my old 17in CRT :(. Is it my graphics card? I realise it is a couple of years old but I thought it would be fine for just windows XP desktop stuff? any advice guys?

Thanks in advance,

Jez

Hey,

If your screen is scrolling around, that's the video card and has little to do with the monitor.

Basically you went to the display control panel and set it 1920x1200 but this sets up the desktop resolution to 1920x1200, and while the video card should follow, it may not, as it also should set the monitor to this setting..

So the problem is any of the following:

1) Video card does not support 1920x1200 resolution. Check the nVidia control panel to find the highest supported resolution reported by the monitor to the vidcard. . This would be under the "Change resolution" item on the left panel of the screen.

2) Check the "advanced picture" settings in the monitor to change the aspect ratio from "full" to "aspect" or "1:1". This will fix your 1600x1200 problem and it should stop stretching the display.

Generally, this stuff should work fine out of the box, but sometimes when dealing with older video cards and computers, there may be some limitations due to hardware changing. 1600x1200 was a standard resolution years ago, but 1920x1200 wasn't as common, so some cards may need more tweaking based on their age.

Good luck,

Hi Guys,

Firstly thank you both of you for replying to my questions. I appreciate your time and help.

Chartal,

Thanks for the link although I dont THINK it is whats causing me the problems. I think my card is certainly outputing resolutions above what that link states ok although tbh I am not 100% sure. I will try it later if I havent made progess on other areas.

10e,

Thanks for your helpful reply. The video card does support this resolution for sure. Infact I am pretty sure it can go higher (although this monitor does not support higher of course). Both the NVIDIA specialist control panel and standard windows desktop properties report the highest display possible by this monitor/gfx card combo as 1920x1200. I had to install the latest drivers for the gfx card to get that there, I also checked the specs at the time, it can definately handle it.

I tried your tactic of changing aspect ratio from "full" to "aspect" or "1:1". This worked well in that indeed the screen is not stretched and it looks a lot better ALTHOUGH....There are now two huge black bars of unused screen space at the side. Bad I thought, but progess. I then upped the resolution to 1920x1200 crossing my fingers and hoping that this would take up the black bars at the side and I wouldnt have to scroll around and I would be able to enjoy my monitor.......Alas the black bars remain and all that happens is I still have to scroll around my desktop inside the bars :( :( :(. Any ideas on how to fix it? I had the idea that changing the settings inside the monitors menu on the "display" page might help. Annoying my benq wont even let me adjust anything on this page?? hitting enter on this page does nothing, unlike the other monitor menu pages where hitting enter takes you into that page to select a setting to change. Gawd I am so disappointed with this purchase at the minute :(

Stil thanks for your help so far guys, any other help for solving this would really be appreciated?

Good to hear the blackout problem was solved even if only partly. If changing graphics cards helped solve the issue, maybe the release of new graphics card drivers might help to alleviate the problem.

I found a solution for my FX5200 card. The optimum 1920 1200 resolution displays correctly if I use the old d-sub connection to wire it to my card, I was using DVI before. I have no idea why this works but there you go.

Thanks for your help everyone

hi,

Does this monitor support true 1:1 pixel mapping so I can use it with my wii etc? I don't want to have to worry about trying to find one with a certain firmware either...Also post any relavent negatives.

and if this has been discussed in detail already please just point me to the appropriate page, i can't read through over 200 pages to find it myself.

Check the following post for the WII answer

http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1031833457&postcount=4526

Yes, this monitor supports 1:1 perfectly, but with a Wii at 720x480 1:1 gives you about a quarter of a full screen. (ie. 720x480 of a 1920x1200 image).

But either way, regardless of firmware (as long as it's not December 2006) you should be fine. September/June 2007 firmware will work best for you though.

When using a Wii can you stretch the image while maintaining the original aspect ratio so that the image fits the screen vertically, and has letterboxes to the side?

thanks!

I have a chance to get this monitor with a June 07 build Rev.B5-128 I was wondering if this has the 1:1 pixel mapping and overscan fix. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks

it seems that AUO will move MVA panel to larger sized LCD (26" & above) BenQ still have some brand new FP241W in stock so any one who's interested can check their website out.

Hey Zandramas,

Since no one else responded (and I'm the one who directed you to post ), I'm pretty sure this is a good model.

I am not 100% sure, but I remember in this thread that someone purchased the June 2007 model and it did have the overscan fix, and VGA with Xbox 360 at 1920x1080 worked fine.

I am thinking the reason this is available in Canada is because they have reallocated European and Asian market stock to North America due to AUO not manufacturing the panel any more.

Originally the September 2007 model in North America was the only one with the fixes, but I know for a fact that it is the same as the June 2007 model in the other markets.

Just talk to the reseller and see if they would be willing to allow you to return this monitor if it does not have the overscan toggle in the OSD.

Otherwise I would recommend it over the FP241VW, which I am not as enthused about due to some color washout with greens and reds.

I have a problem..and I HOPE it's not major. I have two vertical black lines coming in the left side of my monitor. I've included the picture because I can't describe it well.

You can see a black/grayish line by the pdf file...and there is another similar line a couple inches next to it, if you can see it from the picture. I know it's a bad quality picture, but I'm hoping someone will recognize the problem I'm having and is solve-able.

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9597/pic0198uo1.jpg
(Note: I've removed IMG tags because the picture is big)

I'll look to borrow a digital camera for a higher quality picture. So far, I only see two of these lines(as seen in the picture), on the left side of the monitor. I've had the monitor since around August 2007. This is the first time seeing these types of the lines for me. It is a BenQ FP241W. Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Do you have the monitor connected via DVI cable? Well, I suppose so. I did see such anomalities when using D-SUB cable, but not DVI.

I saw something similar. I had seven of these on the FP241VW going from right to left/horizontally. They were all equally spaced, as I measured them.

They lasted for a few days and went away. It was about 3 weeks after I bought it.

Weird.

Hi All, I'm having a problem with my FP241W, it looks to be similar to the Blackout problem that everyone has been talking about, only that the blacking out occurs indefinitely.

The problem with the monitor occurs when using the DVI port after an extended period of time, where then the screen will go completely dark almost as if power saving were turned on. Although, unlike the power saving mode, the power light stays green, you cannot wake it up by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard, and you cannot see any on-screen display messages. If the monitor is powered off and then right back on, the computer’s image will flash on the screen for a split second and then go dark again. If the monitor is powered off for an hour or so, it will work for a little while until the problem occurs again. Throughout all of this, the VGA port works fine.

This monitor has been tested with multiple DVI cables at 1920x1200 resolution on my PC with a 7600GT and now a Recently purchased 8800GT. Both with old and new drivers.

The best part, is that I've sent it in to Benq to be serviced multiple times now and because this is an intermittent problem, Benq has not been able to recreate the problem. However, after my experiences with their tech support my thoughts are that they simply choose not to spend the time it takes to re-create the problem, and just magically send it back to me as if nothing was wrong at all.

In any case if anyone has experienced this problem before I'd love to get your thoughts on the matter.

I would find a way to video tape it.

You could also try:

1) Getting a DVI to HDMI cable and using the HDMI connector and see if it works
with your PC (max. res. is 1920x1080 though)
2) Try both ports of the video card with DVI and see if it happens that way too
3) Try any other computer with a DVI output and see if the problem happens there too
