am I the only one beyond annoyed that in many games 99% of the gamemodes are mindless instant respawn deathmatch types?
you aimlessly wonder around a map because there's no objective and when you kill someone, half a second later they have already respawned and are shooting back at you...
where is the fun in that

I'm not a fan of round based gamemodes but what I would like are gamemodes like capture the flag or capture and hold and such where if you are killed, there's a reasonable respawn delay
but game servers like these appear to be a dying breed

...have you played any recent games?
Everything has been going round based CS style in my experience.

I don't know of any games out there that have deathmatch as their only game mode; there's usually at least one CTF mode and usually a few others, why not just play one of them?

I for one am glad there aren't a lot of round-based games out there; I don't have a lot of time to play games so I don't like wasting time watching a game in spectator mode, I want to get back in the action ASAP and I think most people feel the same way.

As for the prevalence of deathmatch, that gets the most people because it's simple, easy to understand and it's fun. There's no real need for coordination or teamwork in deathmatch versus CTF. Most people want to just jump onto a server and start fragging.

Deathmatch was cool in like 1995, today  I would rather watch paint dry than run around some warehouse looking map shooting everything that moves, that gets old in like 1/10th of a second. Now CTF is a different story and totally awesome. Back in the glory days Quake2 CTF was hands down the king baby

I am the exact opposite, I hate objective game modes / leveling up in multilayer games. Its all about 1v1 / DM / TDM for me. And that is why quake 3 / quakelive is still the king of online multiplayer for me.

well its not that easy, lets take cod4 for example... it has non deathmatch, non round based gamemodes but how many domination and headquarter servers are around? and then these game modes might as well be team deathmatch since you are randomly spawning all over the place and 99% of the servers have instant respawn

Love Team Fortress 2. Capture the flag (Intelligence), payload (Pushing a bomb from your base to theirs), holding capture points, etc.

Good stuff

TF2 has plenty of objective/team based gameplay if that is what you want. It's less easy to dominate in that game since it has very rock-paper-scissors class balance but if the server has a respawn timer as most good ones do you cannot win unless the team works together.

BF2 had/has some great teamplay too. To win your team needs to play reasonably well together but you can also march off on your own and tear it up if you're decent.

I miss Day of Defeat from the beta days. I love class-based objective-based multiplayer games grounded in reality. The problem with CoD 4 is the maps don't have fixed spawns in domination/hq game modes. Sure, spawn camping can be a pain but if they worked a way around that it'd be alot better than the way it is now. I prefer HQ mode and hate when the enemy spawns behind me and kills me instantly when I'm defending the HQ. Then theirs artillery/chopper/nade spam but we won't go there...

Personally, I'd love to see Modern Warfare 2 have CoD: United Offensive style multiplayer. Class based with some non-overpowered vehicles.

Fat Princess is finally being released this week. I have been looking forward to that.

Otherwise its just TF2 for PC for me.

Urgh, no. UO vehicles weren't well received, and for good reason. CoD is all about perfecting infantry combat, and the first game's MP hasn't been surpassed.

Yes, sir - you are spot on. I'm not that keen on arena or payload race.

I actually like instant respawn servers as I only get an hour to play before bed. I really don't want to be waiting around between deaths, I want constant action.

the problem is with this generation of kids/gamers is that they dont have the attention span for objective based games.. and our generation is getting older and working 5-7 days out of the week and dont have time to play objective based games.. me personally id rather play objective based games so it feels like im actually doing something instead of like you said.. aimlessly running around killing people.. or otherwise known as call of duty 4..

Like someone else said its the way people want to play now a days..

Just take one game like zombie panic: There are 2 different modes, survival and objective. There are literally 10x more survival servers than there are objective, even though IMO objective is the ONLY way to play the game.

TF2 is the game you want to get.

The problem with objective based games is that it still boils down to kill or be killed. Even in cs_ counterstrike maps, very few people remember that they're supposed to be rescuing, or preventing the rescue of hostages. Even in games like these, the most effective way to contribute to your team is by killing a lot of enemies.

TF2 requires co-ordination. The Pyro, Heavy, Soldier, and Demoman will rack up the most kills. The Medic will kill very few people on his own. The Engineer just builds stuff, and some of that stuff happens to kill people. The Sniper will get a lot of kills, but IMO the sniper is the most effective at picking off Medics that are supporting a Heavy. Scouts get quite a few kills, but they're also pretty important in capping point. The Spy is there to stealthily get kills, and send the opposing team into a panic of voice-chat flooding.

The only game that I notice is dominated by TDM is COD4, at least on the console version I played on.

I like objective based games, they keep the action together and give you somewhere to go instead of running around like a idiot. Games are evolving for the good.

The "basic" objectives are and will still be around. CTF, "Domination" and the sort are all found in most multiplayer FPS. True team based and objective oriented gameplay is found only in games like Enemy Territory and the most recent and advanced Quake Wars.

Completely wrong. In Quake Wars you can be the greatest fragger of all time, but that won't lead your team to victory. Not by a long shot. Either you play as team and complete the objectives according to the team's goal or you will lose the match. Fragging isn't even important in some of QW's classes.

exactly.. which is why QW is the only FPS i play again and again even if i have all the friggin maps memorized.. i cant stand rambo style TDM games.. they drive me insane and bore the hell out of me.. but on that same note.. that is why QW is not a popular game.. people dont want to work as a team.. they just want to be stat wh*res.. and it irritates the hell out of me and you cant win a map that way..
