i will pay no more than $300 for whatever cheaper version they have
killa my point is, because we dont know, historically how much later do cards come out after they are announced?

with ATi, announcement -> shelf is about 1 month, with nVidia, they have proven to be much less predictable. So we dont know :9

Actually, I would be dissapointed if the NV40 wasnt at least 20% faster. Considering the 9800 Pro is $200 now, and the NV40 and R420 will likely be $500 everywhere for the first few weeks to a month, the 9800 Pro still wouldnt be a bad deal at all.
I do like that you said "better" and not "faster" though.

I'm not sure what you folks are waiting for (those with Ti4200, MX440, 8500LE and the likes).
If you want to spend $500 for the latest uber nVidia or ATI card when it comes out, then fine, but since some of you have DX7 cards, it doesn't sound like you'll be spending $500 for the latest now does it?
Guess what, you'll still be playing the waiting game.
You're not likely to get a better deal and you will be missing out on fun.
I purchased my 9800 Pro many months ago and have enjoyed it to the fullest![]()

I wouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger -- NV40 has already been shown to perform 100% faster than current generation cards in at least one DX9-heavy benchmark:
NV40 3DMark03 Score = 12,500+
Even if the NV40 is a $400 card, 1) twice the dollars for twice the performance sounds like a pretty fair deal (ten times better than the nearly double you have to pay for the 5-7% performance gain of the 9800XT over the Pro), and 2) the NV40 will be far more futureproof as we are just now about to embark on the next generation of games (starting with Farcry, D3, and HL2).
If you don't eat out for a month, you'll have the $100 or so extra ready by the time it comes out.

I'm all for waiting if possible (if not that 9800pro is a great card at a very good price), but don't pre-order the nv40 on the basis of the INQ's article. They were putting out the same kind of crap when the nv30 was in the works. The INQ seems to ascribe to the motto "If you throw enough shit at the wall, some of it has got to stick".
