Nintendo Switch

I'm personally sticking with my wiiu given that the new Zelda is on it anyways. A lot of really good games. The switch I may pickup 2 years from now, but generally my wiiu has been getting a lot of usage being that I can play GC/wii on it along with the wiiu library.
 
bought a wii on day1 and i got my money's worth despite long periods of "inactivity"

it retailed for 250 euro in my region and it had a pretty poor lineup of launch titles as well, but I didn't mind because of the backwards compatibility ( skipped the whole " gamecube era" so that was a plus for me )

now they're asking for 90 euro more + no game included + very few details about VC and online service ? seriously ?

I did not cancel my preorder yet since i managed to shave 40 euros off the MSRP but still ....

zelda retails for 69.99 euros here and that's absurd

I also skipped the "wii U era" but since there's no backwards compatibility, this time around there will be VERY few reasons for me to justify my purchase.

my parents got me a SNES like 22 years ago, donkey kong country and asterix were my very first video games at the age of 6, that's a lot of nostalgia talking right there, maybe i will cancel my preorder maybe not, we'll see :)

Same thing I got 2 Wii and I sold one for the price that I paid for it (stood in line got one and the day after my pre order called in). I have mixed feelings about the whole Switch thing as well the pricing for almost everything sucks balls. The part where Nintendo delivers (to few) Switch to retail to facilitate the "sold out" buzz is also something that has me worried.

Switch retails for 329 Euro and it is not that appealing considering that there is nothing I would like to purchase it for except Dragon Quest and only English version of it.

I would look at it again after launch ...

Walmart dropped the price of the Switch to $285 on its website. Some of the accessories also went down in price.

If you preordered there, might be worth trying to get a price adjustment.

I'm hoping it'll be more like the 3DS launch, lackluster sales at first, but then a price drop and quality software releases bolstered it to success.

I think if the Switch hybrid concept doesn't resonate, Nintendo could always drop the dock, and emphasis the mobile aspect of the console (perhaps release a shell that could improve its battery life too).

huh that seems odd to prematurely drop the price... Nintendo is generally quite firm with their prices for

Retailers aren't required to sell things at the MSRP. The MSRP is, as the name implies, suggested. If Walmart wants to sell it for less they're able to without getting permission from Nintendo, it just means less profit for Walmart.

yes in fact for the most part there is wholesale pricing which walmart pays nintendo then retail price nintendo might have wholesale at 250 msrp at 299 which means retail outlets pay nintendo 250 per console by the pallet load then mark them up to anywhere above that typically walmart might undercut on the console to sell games/accessories which might have a higher profit margin or a larger markup...

Wholesale is probably 295, retail is 299.

There's almost 0% margin on consoles, been this way for 20 years.

Yeah but looking at the BOM for the switch I'm coming in way less than that I would say it costs Nintendo 90 - 120 to make a switch. And likely if Walmart is dropping price the wholesale is likely 280-285 I doubt Walmart would sell at a loss but they might go for a tiny profit to sell higher profit margin games and accessories.

Walmart isn't dropping the price. You cannot buy a switch from walmart at that price. Until you can it's all speculation.

They do this often with clearance and OOS items. Gripe at the category manager.

This.

Nearly all of the profit comes from accessories and games. They barely make anything on the console, but selling you one puts you in position to buy a lot of the high margin stuff.

It's being reported that Nintendo is increasing production of Switch units leading up to launch, so we'll see. It would be funny if Nintendo managed to get a steady supply going from launch onward to fuck over the people that bought a bunch with the intent to resell.

There is maybe 4 titles announced that caught my interest only 1 comes out on launch then it is either q4 or 2018 before the next game comes out if I do get one I'll wait for Xmas shame too I want the special edition of Zelda...

Wow. That's actually a really good commercial. The right mix of core games and casual games. Pushing the right demographics, showcasing different use cases. Good job Nintendo. Hopefully the commercial is worth $15+ million they're spending on it, depending on how much of it they show during the Super Bowl that is.
 
All I got from that commercial is they really did not want adult males winning any competitions vs gals, lol. That made predicting the beats of this commercial boringly easy.

Lol, I didn't even notice that. I was more focusing on looking at the demographics and games, not who was winning in likely CG footage pasted on after the fact.

Been a reality of gaming going back to the release of the Sega CD. That's the first system I can ever remember where if you didn't pre-order it you probably weren't gonna get one. I remember people selling 'em on the Prodigy and AOL for sale boards for 2X retail. The NES was a big seller back in the day, but literally the day after Christmas of 1986 they mysteriously showed back up on shelves.
 
Yep.. I remember the asspain of getting a N64 when it came out.

But at least back then the scalpers weren't as bad and shit wasn't immediately sold out day 1 of preorders due to the internet. At least back then you could still drive around and find that KB Toys in the middle of nowhere that still had a couple in stock.

That's not even possible anymore.
 
I remember showing up at the mall on the release day for the Playstation 1. There was a line coming out of the EB somewhere around 30 people deep. Those were the pre-pays and pre-orders that were being dealt with 1 by 1. I strolled to the other side of the mall, grabbed one off the shelf at Kay Bee (it might have been Circus World at the time) and left inside 5 minutes.
I bought an N64 at Toys R Us. Not sure of the hows or whys, but they had plenty and there was nobody else there when they opened. Apparently the pre-buy people got theirs a couple days earlier, but they had a ton of shelfies for sale on the official release day.

The PS2 was a different story. The various stores in town were only promised something like 15 each and they were pre-sold months earlier. Wal-Mart guaranteed they were going to have 100 of them for sale at midnight. Me and my college roommates rolled up around 7PM and we were maybe 20th or so in line. By midnight there were about 300 people there. Rather than utilizing the line that had formed, they just rolled 'em in on a cart and yelled "come get 'em!" It was a borderline riot, but we ended up with 3 of them for our house. I don't miss anything like that.

but i've voiced my opinion, i don't get into arguments in black and white with people i don't know - clearly you feel strongly in opposition to what nintendo does... that's just aces... meanwhile the switch is globally unavailable, has 100+ games in dev for it and just like most other things in some facet or another, will be copied by other game companies in the near future - i promise you both sony and microsoft are right now working on a service or device or something that will allow you to play their console level games while mobile and fully away from the home unit. especially with the the strong possibility that the switch sells like hotcakes, continues to do so and in a years time is making serious noise in the great gaming race we all love and enjoy
 
The problem I have with this machine is not that Zelda looks so bad, but rather that because the specs are so limited, it is unlikely that we will ever see a better looking Zelda on this machine. By the time Nintendo got to Skyward Sword, the graphics were so out of date I didn't even want to play the game.

In my opinion, rendering at 1080p is a MUST in order to create a reference quality version of any game, because televisions are now so large. And just think a few years from now when people are using televisions larger than 60-65 inches, the deficient resolution and lack of anti-aliasing will be an issue all over again.

They didn't need to go 4k but they did need to get their CURRENT Zelda running at 1080 with a nice polished look. If they can't do that with this hardware, what hope is there for the future.

I don't understand when they got it into their head that IMAGE QUALITY was not important in VIDEO GAMES. I hope after this they do another top down Zelda.
 
I'm trying to figure out where the best place to camp out for one will be. I wasn't sure I wanted one, but now I do and preorders are all done. Target, Best Buy, Wally world, or gamestop are my choices.
 
It is launching in March...stores shelves will be stocked by April or May. Or it will be a hit. Either way, I'd consider this a paper launch. They either have supply or they don't. Camping out is beyond ridiculous. Unless you can confirm that a store has X number of units to sell to walk ins on launch day, you are wasting your time.

Anyone remember Zelda II: The Adventure of Link? How many times are we going to let N put us through this nonsense.

Also, does anyone remember the Nintendo 3DS XL, and that freaking little nub they added to it? How many times have they used that nub before launching this thing? Once? Or how about that price drop on the 3DS?

God only knows how they will revise this new unit, price or spec wise. If it wasn't for the new Zelda I wouldn't even consider it.

You could just download Zelda to the Wii U on launch night and enjoy if you lack discipline. I'd rather buy Zelda twice than put myself through some kind of goose chase for this hardware at launch.

You guys might be right, but I'll probably go anyway. I'll check around to see if there are any non-preorder units expected before I go out.
 
If I had to stake out a store, I'd go with the places people have forgotten still exist. K-Mart, Sears, small indie game stores, and old Targets/Wal-Marts that people don't frequent like they used to.
Either that or stores in a developing part of town that people haven't filled out yet. In Denver we have the largest Wal-Mart I've ever seen out near our airport. It's in an area they're predicting to grow a ton, but it hasn't yet. When the Playstation VR was sold out everywhere, I called around and discovered they had some all along.
 
Yeah we don't have many of those here. I live in a small college town, so everywhere that gets electronics is well known.
 
Assuming they let you preload for the Wii U version i'll just be getting that. If they don't allow preload i'll just wait for my Amazon copy to come in the mail.

I'm not sure I would waste my time camping out for a switch just to play Zelda considering it's on the Wii U anyways. The game ultimately was coded for the Wii U and looks good enough on it that trying to get a switch day 1 isn't worth it.

I'm also calling it right now that the Wii U version gameplay wise will be better because you'll have the Gamepad screen to use as a map / inventory.
