NHL 10

I've bought every new nhl game since 07. However, this years game doesn't give me enough reason to pay 60 bucks retail. Last year had the great addition of the online mode, this years game appears lackluster. (I'll still play 09, just won't buy 10 until a price reduction).

Are you kidding me ? this year's verison is probably the best hockey video game i have every played. They improved on last year's game play. The game feels like real hockey !

Ya, just from the demo you can tell the flow of the online game will be much different. Then add in the equipment, better customization of your online character, and whatever else they added to the offline mode I think it's worthy of a day one purchase. I'm a bit of a fan though so what do I know.

Crap, gotta go pre order the game today! I'll most likely be free tues/wed nights to play online matches.

Get that junk outta here. :p

NHL '10 is the best hockey game ever made. Upgrades all over the place.

this is the best sports game period

but the show is a close 2nd

This equipment stuff is starting to get confusing, I guess we'll have to wait for launch to know for sure but here is the current idea of how it will work:

For the guy that neg rep'd this post with "inaccurate information", you're a buffoon. I'll break it down into internet style information, I understand you primates have difficult with full sentences.

You're options for adding points are the following:

1. You can earn your card just like 09

2. Position specific boost packs

3. Individual pieces of gear with boost slots

Now here's where it gets tricky, so concentrate.

Using boost slotted equipment (3) adds attributes to your current build. Which means it adds onto your card points.

Using position specific boost packs replaces your card, and it's a package of gear - stick, gloves, and skates. So you can't use custom boost slotted gear on top of the position specific boost pack. But you can still use a helmet with boost slots, as the position boost packs don't come with helmets.

Simply:

card + boost slots = Yes

card + boost pack = No

boost pack + boost slots = No, aside from helmet

So, for max attributes, you will have to wear non-authentic equipment. Though the Kane equipment has boost slots, I hope there's more than a single option of authentic gear with boost slots, or about 70% of EASHL players will be wearing the exact same gear once the novelty of childish pretend gear wears off.

And then later on:

I was in a chat with Jason last night, he was trying his best to explain everything to me, he admits himself its very confusing. He did however mention this post and say that Mike0ne5 has it pretty well explained, he then sent me this email explaining it a little better and told me at the end to feel free to share it.

So here it is, hopefully it will help alot of people understand all this a little better :

Another way to look at it is this:

You can always equip a Helmet (always), with a best case of three slots in it. The slots can be filled with any attribute other than Speed. There are +5, +3 and +1 cards for each attribute, each card can only be used once, so you cannot get two +5s for the same attribute, but you could get +5 and +3 for the same one, or +5 for two different ones.

After the Helmet you can go one of two routes (and switch whenever you like):

A) Use a Max Boost pack
B) Use individual gear + experience card points. The gear (Skates, Gloves, Stick) works in the same manner as the Helmet. Skates allow upgrades to skating related attributes (e.g. Speed, Agility, etc), Gloves general skills (e.g. Puck Control I think), and Stick for shooting and other stick related stuff. Like the Helmet each piece of gear can have up to three slots. Attribute points are similar to 09.

Either route will get you to the low to mid 80s in overall attributes, but the consensus among the devs who have played is that we prefer having the flexibility of the second route. Given that you will unlock stuff in the course of playing, including the experience cards, one way to go would be to go the first way to get started and be good immediately, then switch to the second way when you have experience and boost cards unlocked (possibly paying to fill in holes if there are specific ones you want and haven't got yet).

To be as good as possible immediately you'd probably get the following:
-One Boost Pack for the player type you prefer.
-One three slot helmet.
-Three Attribute Boosts to fill in the three helmet slots (anything but Speed), e.g. +5 Wrist Shot Power, +5 Wrist Shot Accuracy, +5 Acceleration -- or whatever attributes you like. You could get a +5 and a +3 on one attribute if you really wanted to focus on that, but I wouldn't think using a +1 (for a total of +9 on a single attribute) would be better than getting a +5 in a different attribute.

Please don't hesitate to ask more questions, I'd like to put together a guide for this and it is useful for me to figure out clear ways to explain the mess. Also feel free to pass this on to other people.

Regards,
Jason

So it sounds like those that want max points will have to unlock/use some of the crazy equipment that has 3 slots... which sucks.

Edit: Looks like the Kane 88 pre-order gear (which you can also buy) has the 3 slots as well, so the only thing extra needed will be a helmet as mentioned above.

maybe everyone should say their psn ? I have this game on preorder at gamestop for ps3 and i can't wait i loved the demo even though i get annoyed with only playing the 3rd period over and over again

PSN in in my sig. A few of us on the [H] team will be playing Tuesday night, might just be OTP unless we get the team created that night. It still needs a name though but that's for the other thread.

That's some good stuff. I hated how the CPU passed tape to tape all the time! haha

damn the game is looking really good
this could be the best sports game ever made
?

Ya, it looks better than last year and that was already the best sports game around imo. I have a feeling the EASHL portion will still have it's issues though, it might have a few tweaks but we'll have to wait for NHL 11 for things like team practice. It would also be nice to be able to create your own jersey instead of using only premade ones.

Well, the unlocks have been announced and it's somewhat bad news. Some of the requirements could take months to unlock, and that's playing offline which I don't plan to touch.

Stick boost slots:
Wrist shot power: In playoff mode, win every game on default settings without losing once.
Wrist shot accuracy: Play 3 Be a Pro season and play at least 40 games in each season
Slap shot power: get all A grades in an EASHL game
Slap shot accuracy: average 2 points a game in a Be A Pro season, playing a minimum of 40 games
Faceoffs: get 70 points in one Be A Pro season

Skate boost slots:
Speed: get 200 goals with your EASHL team
Acceleration: average 1 goal a game in a Be A Pro season, playing at least 40 games
Agility: score 250 goals in season mode
Balance: win the Stanley Cup with a european team (you can substitute a Euro team in for an NHL team)
Aggressiveness: win 10 fights in BAP
Checking: get 200 hits in BAP
Endurance: average 1 offsides in one BAP season playing at least 40 games

Glove boost slots:
Passing: unlock the legend GM plaque in be a GM
Deking: win the Stanley Cup in your FIRST BAP season
Discipline: get 150 points in one season with your EASHL team
Toughness: unlock/purchase all aggressiveness boosts
Puck control: get 3 assists per game in 4 straight BAP games
Durability: average 1 turnover per game in a BAP season, playing at least 40 games
Deflections: win the Cup twice in BAP, playing at least 40 games, with the same career
Shot blocking: block 200 shots in EASHL

NOTE: all of these are for +5, the most (there are +1, +3, and +5). The +1 and +3 requirements have NOTHING to do with the +5 requirements. For example, for +1 shot blocking, you have to win the Calder Cup in battle for the cup mode

NOTE: all of these are ONLY for equipment with 3 boost slots. I'm not typing out the ones with only 1/2 slots.

Sticks:
Get all A's with a playmaker in one BAP game
Get all A's with a power forward in a BAP game
Get all A's with a tough guy in a BAP game
Get all A's with a dangler in a BAP game

Skates:
Get the legend plaque in Be a GM mode.
Get 200 hits in a BAP season
Win 10 fights in BAP
Get promoted to the first defensive pairing of your NHL team in BAP

Gloves:
Win against the CPU with the Montreal Centennials on all-star difficulty
Average 1 turnover per game in a BAP season, playing at least 40 games
Average 1 goal a game in a Be A Pro season, playing at least 40 games
In playoff mode, win every game on default settings without losing once.

Helmets:
Average 2 points a game in a Be A Pro season, playing a minimum of 40 games
Get 200 goals with your EASHL team
Play 3 Be a Pro season and play at least 40 games in each season
Get 70 points in one Be A Pro season

Defensive D-Man: play 40 games in 3 consecutive seasons and win the Norris
Offensive D-Man: win the Stanley Cup in Battle for the Cup with EVERY NHL team
Grinder: complete 4 BAP seasons, playing at least 40 games in each
Playmaker: play 40 games in 3 straight seasons and win the Lester B Pearson
Sniper: play 40 games in 3 straight seasons and be playoff MVP
Power forward: play 40 games in 3 straight seasons and win the Frank Selke
Dangler: play 40 games in 3 straight seasons and win the Hart
Tough guy: unlock the Legend card

Pretty hyped for this release. I might cruise around town a bit today and see if anyone has the game out early.

edit: cruised around, no dice at Wally World, FS, BB, ebGames, Gamestop, Zellers. Put my pre-order in at ebGames, Midnight release.

I don't think my store is having a midnight release, I'll just get it tomorrow I guess.

EB just called, no midnight launch so I'll pick it up tomorrow. Might duck out a bit early from work since I have to head back a bit later in the evening.

Any word on which verison is better?

Ps3 or 360?

I dont game online so that doesnt matter. Just curious if one runs better/has less slowdown than the other.

360 was better last year, this year is hard to say as the demos were pretty close. Might have to wait a week and see what the early adopters report. I went PS3 since I already knew a few people that own it for PS3 and it was easier to have a team.

Apparently having text chat open on PS3 locks up the game. Also looks like there's a bug with the ps3 marketplace items/unlocks. I can't see the names of any of the unlock items while in game, which makes it kinda hard to choose the bonuses.

Yeah, I know what you mean. So I unlocked the kane booster pack but I don't think I can pick it at all?

I got ripped off at ebGames for my Kane booster pack. Said they ran out? Oh well. There were about 100 people at the midnight release in Whitby.

The Kane pack should be the only 3 slot skates that are unlocked, you might have to scroll to the right to find them. The problem is the +3 and +5 boosts, none of them say what they are so you just have to guess and check your stats page after I guess.

i got this game today its 100 times better than 09 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it has a ton of issues right now. Plus it still has the random voice chat garbling that it suffered from last year. I'm actually a little disappointed with the experience at least on the ps3 side. 360 folks haven't had any issues as far as I know.

It'll be interesting to see how things go with voice comms once we have a full team on the ice.

I'll be on again tomorrow evening.

Reading the ea support forums, it seems that problems aren't limited to the PS3 version. Everyone's having problems. Oh well, I actually had an enjoyable time in our first game tonight, even though super-boost pack dude was danglin everywhere.

Ya, we've run across a few boost pack guys even in the casual league. I actually haven't frozen in a game yet. The one game we disconnected in was my fault, the cursor was lagging 10 seconds behind my movement and I accidentally hit exit.

Otherwise I've tried playing 12 games so far, 10 went fine and two disconnected before the match. It's easy to tell when that will happen because it doesn't list any created players in the starting lineup comparison.

Doh, I just realized all the teams we've played against so far are in the professional division. I wonder if there's a way to only play casual teams, otherwise I don't see the point of listing your team in the lower division.

Gamespot did a re-evaluation of PS3 and they gave it the same score as the 360 now. They say the online portion is almost identical to the 360 now.

Thursday the PSN store should be updated with the unlockable items, then hopefully we can see what does what.

Ya i enjoy the EA patch system. It costs sixty bucks for a patch and it will take a year before they release this patch.

Have you even played sports franchise titles before? Consider yourself LUCKY if you get more than a roster change. No one is forcing you to buy the game. There is more under the hood that isn't seen than what has been discovered so far.

You sound like one of those basement dwelling critics who just likes to complain. Well, if that is you, then go play the 2K Sports variant.
