OK. Plan is to buy a new AMD Athlon64 3200+ w/ the new 90nm core, the Asus A8V Deluxe, some more ram, and a new case. Looked Newegg over and saw they had good prices on all of the above items. Since there is a KNOWN issue with the A8V and the new Winchester cores, I figured I would call ahead and see what they had to say about it. This is how the conversation went:

ME: Yes, I am ordering the AMD Athlon64 3200+ w/ the new 90nm core and the Asus A8V Deluxe to run that chip, and I need to make sure that the motherboard has at least the 1007 BIOS on it because it is needed to run the machine. Can you find out which BIOS the motherboards you have on them?

HIM: Well sir, we are not able to get that information to you. We try to ship out only the most recent version of the hardware, but we don't know which revision is in which box.

ME: Well, could you have someone look on or in the box to see which BIOS it has on it. I believe it is stamped on the side, and there should be some sort of way to tell which revision it is.

HIM: It is impossible to get someone from shipping to do this, as we have multiple shipping locations across the United States.

(This already sounds like they are getting too big.)

ME: Well, I am buying the chip, the board, some ram, and a new case, maybe you could have someone test it before you ship it out to see what BIOS it has on it, and that they work together.

HIM: We cannot do that as that would have us assemble the computer for you. The shipping people cannot do that.

ME: OK, I understand that, what happens if I order the board, and it gets to me, and its not the correct revision, what happens then?

HIM: Well, at that point you can send it back to us and we will make sure that you get the correct updated version.

ME: If you could do that, couldn't you just check it before it was sent out in the first place. Lets just pretend I already received it, realized it wasn't the correct version, and sent it back, and now you are going to find the correct one and send it to me.

HIM: (finding humor in this) No, unfortunately we would have to go thru the whole process of shipping and returning before we would make that sort of commitment.

ME: So what you are telling me is that I am going to spend nearly $500 in your store, and you will try and send it, and weather or not I get what I am asking for is unknown, and the only way Newegg will fix the problem is if we go thru the whole process of shipping, return, and re-shipping, all because you have too many shipping points to take 2 minutes to find out if the correct part is going to be shipped out the first time. It's basically a crapshoot, correct?

HIM: (pause to think, I guess) Yes sir.

ME: Thank you, I appreciate your honesty and patience. Have a good day.

At this point I don't know if I am going to make my order or not.

there are insufficient words in the English language to express my disgust with Newegg on that one...

Edit: actually, i'm torn between laughing my @$$ off at what idiots they are and puking out of disgust for their business practices.

sorry but im kinda on newegg's side with that one. Just order it, they are great about sending you something if its broke/ not the right model. They will send you a new one free of shipping and usualyl let you keep the other one also, sounds good to me, thats what happened to my case.

I'm guessing you've never worked on the shipping side of any similar company. You must not have to not understand why.

i'm not surprised. i'm guessing their CSR's only take inbound calls and can't make any outbounds calls.

I'm siding with NewEgg. You have a chance of getting the correct revision and if you don't you ship it back. No big deal.

yeah, but the phone rep cant just drive out the warehouses and pick up his parts to test them, im gonna have to side with newegg. chances are youll get the correct bios anyway, the baords have been shipping with the most current bios for a while now.

except for the wasting $$$ on shipping part.

ooo $10.

honestly you can't expect them to be able to run out to the wharehouse and pop open a box for you... can you?

Well there's always other places that might do that for you.... you'll probably end up paying more though, so it's a trade-off either way.

you can't expect them to actually do that, that's just ridiculous.

I'm with 'egg on this one as well. If it weren't for 'egg I'd be buying cut-rate crap from comp-usa for inflated prices, or being dicked around from other stores out there on the web.

I agree that you see a problem with what's happening, but you know what? You know what to expect, you are educated on the product that you wish to purchase. Many kudos to you. It could be worse, you could have bought the board and thought it was a dud after pulling your hair out for days wondering why the god-d!@!ned thing wont post.

You have 2 options as I see it:

Make the crapshoot, buy the board and hope it comes with an acceptable revision. If its wrong, ship it back. You are out only the time you invested.

Go to a B&M store with the product in stock, examine it, purchase it. If not correct, find another B&M store to do the same cycle.

You have to balance the priorities. Save a couple bucks with 'egg and spend a week downtime for a _possible_ RMA or spend the gas, pay retail for shopping at a B&M store. You have to balance what you are willing to sacrifice, time or money.

As for the 'egg, I will continue to shop there, they've always treated me fairly.

You have to side with new egg, they aren't a computer store. They have 0 tech ppl. They buy in huge bulk and provide us with the best shipping and prices. Pay the people, get the board and see what you get. You want better customer tech support by from a local store or buy a Dell.

or you could just buy it and if its not the right bios, flash the correct one to it. not that hard really and you won't be out extra shipping either.

or is it just you want newegg to do it for you?

and yeah, if you knew or ever working in a shipping you would know maybe 1% would know what to look for, and if they did they would most likely have a IT job somewhere.

So what exactly is your complaint? That they wouldn't build your computer for you? That they wouldn't take the time to go searching through the warehouse to look and see what the BIOS version on a specific motherboard is? That you might have to send something back? And could you have been more a condescending jackass to the support guy who was confused out of his mind as to what in the world you were asking for?

I don't see the point of this thread, other than to show everyone how much of an ass you were to one of the few companies left that actually has good CS.

</thread>

newegg is only the shipper and the supplier the testing is the component manufature's job

I believe newegg has been using multiple shipping warehouses for sometimes now, I built my computer over 2 years ago and they all came from different warehouses, yet arrived around expected time or even earlier.

i wouldnt get mad at newegg for expanding its shipping locations to make it faster and cheaper...

most stores on the west coast take so much longer but since newegg has shipping locations on the east too it takes a couple days less

I guess I should have said before, that I do like newegg, and I know they have a good reputation, but this seems like it is a sign that they are getting too big for their own good. The reason that I am asking for this simple check is because, with this MB & Chip combo, if it is not at least a 1007 or beyond BIOS, it will not boot so you can flash it. It is what I have read and what I have come to believe. I have had a few messages about it already saying that I am right and wrong, but I am trying to make the educated try instad of blundering forward.

I know, from being in the retail part of this buisness in the past, that they have to have someone somewhere who is at least a little tech savy, at least to the point they can read the box and tell you what is inside... AT LEAST! This is a simple, "measure twice, cut once" rule that any person should understand. Why waste all the time, money, and fustration when a simple 2 minute check on what is shipped could avoid it. It is simple logic.

As I have said, I have worked in the retail/shipping of computer parts before. If someone told me they were ready to spend $500 on parts, and the only holdup was that they needed some info from a box, then you better damn well believe that someone is going to be looking that info up while the customer is on the phone. It is called good buisness practice. I dont think there is any excuse there. If he cant do it himself, then he should have given me the number to where it would be shipping from so I could have checked with them, someone there must be able to read a box, right?

It is no big deal if I get the MB & then have to return it, except that adds to the cost, even if it is only $10, but how are they going to get "the right one" to me if they cant do it the first time? Come on! It is again common sense, if they cant ensure that the one they originally send me is right, how can I trust that the second, or the third or the fourth is right? If the can send the second one correctly, why cant they do it right the first time. SImple laziness and excuses here... not good excuses at all...

I really would prefer to buy all the parts from the same place at the same time... that is why I am going with Newegg on this. I normally go to the computer shows and pick up items for slightly more, but I can immediately return them if there is a problem. The 2 decent computer stores that I have in town do not have this board in stock at the moment, so I cant really just run out and put my hands on it, however, I have seen the box from one that was recently purchased, and it cleary has a "v2" sticker on it and the BIOS written right on the box, plus the the version number is on the MB between 2 of the PCI slots.

They are a computer store, if not, what are they? Computer retailer is the same thing.

I dont want Newegg to flash the bios for me, I was merely making a suggestion on how this might be resolved if they wanted to put their hands on it. Telling me they dont have a technician on hand is obviously not 100% because they put together "barebones" deals and "package" deals all the time.
.
.
.
... now after all this, I am probably going to make my order anyway. I know Newegg is a good "store" / "retailer" / "reseller", but I feel that they kinda dropped the ball on this one early, and can only hope to recover this fumble if I am nice enough to jump thru the hoops for them.

Whoa waddles... settle down...

I am not upset that they would not build the computer for me, hell I dont really want them to touch my shit, but I was suggesting a way, and understood when they said it was not possible.

Yes, I expect someone to put their eyes on the box long enought to make sure they are sending me the correct thing. I called to ask if they could do that and they said they could not. I do not feel that it is in anyone's best intrest if we have to ship things back and forth and have every possiblility of theft/damage tripled because someone could not spend 2 minutes to check something.

The point of this thread is to state my opinion and tell my story. If you dont like that, well, sorry. I was very polite to the CS person, and I told him how I knew it was not his fault directly, so I wasnt being a bastard... really...

I agree .. to expect a company to do that is stupid for lack of a better word you want your stuff tested goto www.azzo.com or some place that pretests there stuff but it's going to cost you that would be like well i'm looking for this C0 steping please open up all the boxes and tell me cause i don't want to get a sorry chip get real

I'm going to side with Newegg on this one. They have great customer service, but it seems to be pretty rigid. Anything outside of that is pretty much undoable. That's how they can keep prices so low. If they had guys running through warehouses and opening boxes to check versions for customers then costs would go up. Most geeks(at least the ones who shop at newegg) know pretty much exactly what they want and so they don't need to call them and ask a bunch of questions. They just place an order and get their parts. It seems like ordering something and shipping it back is a lot of hassle, but it's probably easier and cheaper on their end to do it this way since they do those operations probably hundreds of times a day. There are companies who will go look at version numbers for you, but that labor costs money and you will pay more for your parts. You can't get it both ways, though.

Not to mention that while board revisions are placed on labels, BIOS revisions are usually not placed on labels. That would mean having to boot up motherboards until they found the one you are asking for. I'm sure your local mom-and-pop would do that, but then they're probably going to cost you more $$, and that's if they even bother to carry the motherboard you're looking for.

I agree with New Egg. You can't expect the lowest price and still get all the perks of a more expensive place. I was surprised by the honesty of the rep you talked with. It is nice to see someone give you a straight answer, even if it doesn't make the company look good.

That's very true. A dishonest company would have probably just straight up told you you were getting the latest revision, without even attempting to check.

...yep. If it's price you want, there are some things that have to go. Pre-assembling / pre-testing seems a reasonable place to cut costs IF the RMA policy is reasonable. You do have choices.....

I agree with brom42; it would have been easy for the person on the phone to say "....sure, NP, we'll test it first....", log the order, and move on. Point goes to the egg on this one.....

Azzo will pre-test for you; a good recommendation there.

i concur with Bullitt. it is not really nice of them to do what they did here, but i will still shop with them, if and when i get the $$$ to do so.

newegg moves so much product that they pretty much always have the latest revision of whatever you're buying.

people need to realize that there are other people on this planet besides yourself.

Newegg has thousands of customers, and a lot of people call them everyday. If newegg tended to every personal "favor" for every customer then the customer would start bitching about how long processing takes to ship the product.
People are never happy, there is always something else to complain about.

Take life with a grain of salt, if your biggest concern about a company is the product you get wont work properly, and they have already said they will return teh product and ship you a new one free of charge, then to me, that company is going on the top of my list.

and i know you said you liked Newegg, this was more of a general statement post, not pointed at you specifically

im for newegg, they have multiple locations so they can get stuff to you faster depending on where you live and availability, would frys or compusa put your parts together and test it to make sure it worked..yes but for a price, its not that big a deal to RMA something if it doesnt work, waiting longer sucks but at least they RMA and have good CS

Again, that was not what I wanted, I really do not want anyone to touch the parts, it was a suggestion if they wanted to do it.

Buy it from Monarch computers.
They are smaller and will check the revisions for you.

Its your money, get what you want.

Newegg is great but they aren't always the best choice. In this case I wouldn't order fromt hem as I would not want to take the chance of being without a board, chip et al for 2 weeks or so waiting on shipping to and fro.

Well, I am not going to buy anything from newegg for a while. I was looking at parts to build myself a p4 system with an x800pro, 1gb 3200, etc, and I saved money by going to my local frys and buying everything there (yes, even after tax) Newegg seems to be getting more and more exspensive everyday.

I really wish there was a Frys around here...

... but us backwood virginians wouldn't know what to do with technology, now would we.

I must side with newegg here. There is nothing in their policy that says they will check board revisions and BIOS revisions, therefore, you have no reason to be mad. There is also nothing in their policy that says they guarantee that everything you order will work together. You already understand this.

I don't see how anyone could expect newegg to go check on this. Do you have any clue how many people call in and ask the same thing? Do you have any idea how many extra people they would have to hire to cover all these requests? Do you have any idea how badly it would screw up their well oiled machine having a bunch of people running around trying to check every revision and BIOS version on every motherboard, vid card, stick of RAM, processor and every other part they carry? Just think of all the missing manuals, CDs, accessories and whatever else comes with all the hardware because boxes had to be opened and reopened.

It does not take a genius to understand what all of this would do.

it funny to think what a perfect world people think they live in.

time to join me in the real world

Who cares if you get the wrong BIOS version, it's not the part, the BIOS is. I can touch the BIOS, can you touch the BIOS software and tell me that's a part again.

Flash you own BIOS, or pay someone to test for you.

If I was a mom-and-pop reseller I wouldn't dig through 10 boxes to find you the "perfect" one. Luck of the draw, just like the reseller got them. I could understand if this was a board revision, with different PARTS, but this isn't...

I'm with newegg.

Ummm, that was the whole point though.

If he gets that chip with that mobo, and the bios isn't updated, he wont be able to flash it.

*scratches head*

Hmm, I guess that won't work... This is a tough call, I would still side with newegg though, it's really asking a bit to get what the OP wants (BIOS versions aren't always printed on the box meaning it would have to be booted). In that case, as newegg, they shouldn't sell that combination of parts, or at least make the purchaser aware, and let them decide. If it's that big of a deal, don't buy the part online, go to a B&M store where it'll be easier to do an exchange.
