Network pics thread

We like to call them chariots but car for short, we upgraded to horses years back, moose can be temperamental, and trying to get anywhere during hunting season proved to be hard. :D

Why hunt for moose when you can eat your own vehicle? :p

I decided to quickly draw a coverage map for the Unifi UAP-Pro installed on the main floor of my townhouse (about 50' x 20'). I think that I got it covered. ;)

So, time for pictures! (clickable thumbs)

As I told earlier, I got myself a quad NIC from Ebay: An IBM branded Intel PRO/1000PT (39Y6138 IBM FRU). Picked it up at the office Friday and got some time to get something done:

The full size bracket wouldn't fit in a 2U server, but no panick!

I killed off the bracket of an old graphics card and tadaah: shorter bracket.

Installed in the ESX whitebox. A nice fit and it's pretty solid. May need to do the same for my IBM M1015 in my NAS server that has no bracket.

Back to the attic:

From top to bottom: Norco RPC-230 (ESX whitebox), Norco RPC-2208 (NAS), HP PRocurve 1810G

The lot in the corner.

Future plans
I am toying with the idea to get a second whitebox and maybe another (smaller) rackmount NAS for backup. First thing I'll need to do is clean up the cabling mess on the back. I refused to do it now since I don't have any tools/accessories for it yet.
It'll probably be housing a router/security appliance too once I move away from my parents house.

Well seeing that he's dead, you might be waiting a while, and therefore so will I. :)

Nothing much.
16 port d-link 10/100 and a 24port gigabit hp switch, vonage box and not seen d-link dir-825 running dd-wrt.

16mbps/1.5mbps and 30mbps/3mbps for internet connection and a spare cable modem incase one goes down.

PS: That UPS is like that because it will atleast do 2 hours with only running the network. :D

@LOCO LAPTOP did you took some 6v or 12v batteries ? I have the same UPS laying near the garbage bin waiting some cheap "resurrection" scenarios !

that UPS runs off 24vdc so I am guessing 2x 12v batteries... he replaced the 7AH with 12(?) AH batteries it looks like

I've done similar mods without issue... APC even does this on some of the older extended run UPS models

Question....

how do you make the ups/software aware of the upgrade, no matter what I do with my ups at home it will still only run the load for a max of 5 mins whatever the battery i use.

Just in case it matters mine is a baby 350va.

on UPS' like that not sure what you could do... SmartUPS' have the runtime calibration, don't think the BackUPS' do?

Unifi install at my home. Indoor main AP is in a bedroom with the rest of the network equipment. Wireless link to the garage with another AP. Extends coverage far enough that I can connect with my laptop in the truck and grab some music before I go somewhere.

Not to mention pretty damn good service for the rest of the units in your HOA...

Woah that's awesome, how did you do that range graph?

It's just the ubiquiti unifi software.

I just took a screenshot of Google earth. Also used earth to give me a rough idea on distance. You tell the unifi software a distance (used length of house.. 43 feet) and it automatically gives you that range. Obviously, It's all estimated. But It's actually pretty close.

Cool, I usually just use a vehicle that I know. Use the length of the vehicle for a rough distance measurement. :)

Not sure on a small 350va, this is a 1250va maybe its more efficient than your 350va?

That's correct, BackUPS doesn't have run time calibration.

Ahhh ok, I thought it was something that actually did some kind of scan or something. Was trying to figure out how that would work without having to walk everywhere. :p

I'll have to take pics on my upcoming rollout of our public wifi spread across four locations on four seperate dsl lines on one controller. I have a stack of them next to my desk.

We do basically the same. A couple of production SANs and backup SAN at each site. Production does a full backup to the backup SAN at night, then from the backup SANs to tape. Then the backup SANs replicate to one another. Incremental/snapshots are done intermittently during the day.

What sort of backbone do you have between the two SANs? (Internet connection)

My company is currently trying to figure out our options. We have a 15TB SAN full of our video team shoots and FCP projects that needs offsite backup.
We recently added the SAN to migrate the team away from 8x external hard drives connected to a Mac Pro--that only backed up to a Drobo FS.

We backup the same way the guy you quoted does. We have 24 strands of dark fiber to our second data center, so no bandwidth concerns.

You can backup over the Internet but you'll need a decent pipe. Depending on change rates you could do the initial backup on the LAN and then move the backup offsite. Incrementals forever shouldn't be to hard to do unless you're dumping a ton of data.

I have two datacenters, have the budget, still use tape. I actually do disk to disk to tape. I keep a large DAS array to stage my backups before writing to tape.

The company I work for (Not in IT) has a 10 figure IT budget, we still use tapes. Because they're the only long term solution thats available, HDDs are not a long term backup medium.

Technet eh... nice name for the porn folder. :D

I just got my new toy, can't believe how fast that was. A few days ago it was like 1000 miles away.

Should be fun to play with for a bit before I throw it in production and retire my daisy chained 5 port dlinks lol.

You'll dig that switch. Mine served me well for ages and ages.

I actually just spent the morning replacing mine:

with this guy:

48 Layer 3 managed PoE gigE ports. What to do with them all? :D

Plug a bunch of stuff into it and make pretty, pretty graphs of course. (linked for size)

Nice switch, how are the fans in it ? is it loud ?

technet is a folder stuffed with iso's :) for os's and other stuff. lol

PORN is actually called PRON !!

I found mine to be pretty loud, hence the two 80mm fans on top that replaced the 40mm ones along the side.

the Switches don't even get warm, so slowing them down with a resistor is what worked perfect for me, plus i made a air path shield :)

Yeah it is a little loud but should be fine in the server room especially once I build it properly with walls and stuff. The server "room" is just a wide open area in the basement right now. Can slightly hear stuff from upstairs, but gotten used to it. The hum is reassurance that all my stuff is still running. :D

Just realized I will need a double female serial cable so I can't play with this tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to find one or a gender changer at a local store tomorrow.

Speaking of fans, one thing I noticed with lot of switches is how the air flow is side to side. Wonder how this works for large environments when it's in a high density rack situation. Wont really be an issue for me though.
