Network pics thread

@The Spyder --

That was a nice friend especially if he found it at a yard sale.

What is funny is he is not a computer guy, just a car friend who knows enough to get in to trouble. He saw the kit, looked it up on his phone, and gave me a ring. He owed me $100, but this more then covers that debt. No idea what he actually paid, nor do I care.

Everything works from what I can tell, new in 06.

I have no idea myself just started reading about this stuff.
So QLE246X's datasheet says following:
Protocols FCP (SCSI-FCP), IP (FC-IP), FC-TAPE (FCP-2)

If i recall correctly somebody used QLE256* card with Openindianas Comstar driver without problems.
But i've to look into this more after i get the LC/LC cables =)

cables are DIRT cheap, like 10$ if that.

Installed this today :)

NOT the picture of the product but its a ML6020 heavy beast i must say, shows up on a pallet and takes 2 people to get it out and off the pallet.

Two of our pile o' 6503's. SUP720-3BXL in each. (they are redundant to each other).

New pic of my main server:

Added a new backplane... the other one got backordered. Pisses me off, I better get the same model or it's going to look stupid. Speaking of looking stupid, that case is weirdly designed, in that the bays on the left are vertical and on the right they are horizontal. This caused the previous backplanes to be offset 90 degrees on one side, which looked weird. So.... I fixed that. Basically I just rotated it to fit, but since I could not screw it in, I just packed some foam and it's VERY tight. I was concerned about foam being staticy, but given it's right against a ground, I can't see it being an issue. It's not like something is actively rubbing against it to cause static. Added a bead of caulk around to force airflow through the drives. I think this is the first time I have used caulk in an IT related application. For now I have a piece of paper over the other door to block most of the air flow. I really need that other backplane to arrive soon. :/ I hope I don't end up waiting months for it. Never know with backorders.

I've been replacing parts left and right trying to figure out the cause of the random IO errors that started recently. It could be so many things. Pain in the ass.

What are they doing? I don't think I've ever seen a 6503 in real life. What's the point?

H O L Y Shit dash.. thats a monster

yeah, i can say monter too, im 170lbs WET clothed, and it took 2 ppl to lift this beast after i installed rails into rack.

Yes its a tape library, has 2 serial cables too :) it's a beast :) i took pics of inside and what it looks like when it arrives from Dell, & what it looks like with the lid off, gimi a day and i'll post the pics :)

Yes you have to take the top off, before you plug it in, the carrousel * probably bad spelling on that is locked, to prevent damage in shipping :)

That is actually a pretty small tape library. I work in a data centre where customers have ones that hold upwards of 5,000 tapes. Now those are a true pain in the a** to install, they come in about 100 sections and require "some" assembly. The joys of dealing with Canadian oil company's.

the post / thread isn't about penis size, it's a pictures thread of installs and equipment, if you have something BIGGER, then prove it.

You don't see those two statements, just a few lines apart in your post, as possibly related?

This thread almost makes me want to post the nightmare I have to deal with.

Even after multiple complaints to management about wanting to redo it I still get told no.

I actually would love to share pictures of some of the gear I work with. But due to NDA's and also being a government contractor I can't. If you don't believe me, so be it.

Sweet Netgears, 3Coms, and that Linksys.. LOL I can see why you call it a nightmare

They are just for one of the cages, when everything is distributed after the firewalls there isn't much of a point to have more slots when they won't be in use..

Imagine the response for when I asked about a managed switch. Got laughed out of the meeting.

I have sooo many more stories to about this place.

Not mine but found online, I believe its located in the National Cryptologic Museum
auto_tape_big.JPG

I visited the National Cryptologic Museum last year and saw this thing. The arm still works and they have it moving disks around.

If anyone is ever near Fort Meade i suggest visiting the Museum, it is small but really fascinating. It has the worlds largest collection of Enigma machines which alone is worth seeing. Along with the Enigma machines they have one of the original bombe's used to crack it, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/US-bombe.jpg

Anyone into network secutiy/information security should visit the Museum at some point.

That's pretty bad. Wait until I find my old server room setup... :)

I take it that was a mess you inherited? I've got one I inherited to post here soon.

As I said got some new switches in (older model, Catalyst 3550) - good for lab though (courtesy of Shadowspawn's recent sale).

You'll have to excuse the small skeltek rack in the back - all I could afford. I think when I buy my house in 2012 that this will either get added to or I'll buy a big one. For now it manages everything I have (not much as it is).

Would love to see it, one of my favorite parts of this thread. I just look at them and go wow thats bad then remember what I have to deal with and get a unhappy face.

Partial inheritance with incompetent coworkers adding to it over the years.

I wish I could get on the roof to take photos of the old satellite dishes the director wanted to use for a backup internet plan.

I have heard from multiple people its a great place to visit. Its top on my list if I ever make it up that way.

Pretty damn expensive for 48 ports, some features, and no redundancy though. If it works, it works. Just curious.

Ah yeah. They are redundant to each other. It's something we are gettin away from in the future.. Goin with juniper

I have 2 rooms like that and its a 24/7 operation here so I don't have any down time to fix it. I just blank it out of my mind.

Same situation here, except we have like 10 of em. Some are not even proper patches. They stripped the insulation right off and have all the individual pairs going to a bix panel and treat it like it was phone lines. Crosstalk anyone? And we wonder why we have so many weird network issues. :D Any new additions are done properly, thankfully.

Image what the back of the racks look like. Power cords running in every which directions. The director wants each plug in two different ups's but each ups is designated by how critical the server is but then the ups can not exceed a certain load.

I am glad though I am not the only one and that I only have one room compared to everyone elses multiple.
