Yep. Basically it aligns 2 fibers on their x,y,z axis then produces an arc that fuses them together. This one is used for single SM and MM fibers. They make an 'r' version that can do a 12 fiber ribbon cable as well. As Lightworker said very cool to see in action, hard to believe a machine like this can align 2 pieces of glass that are 9 microns in diameter well enough to pass light w/ a .05 dB loss or less.

You must be very resistant to annoying noise - the Linksys 16GBit/s switch you have under your desk is very loud, isn't it? I even find it annoying in my rack in the basement ;)
 
I just snagged another Cisco 2621 from Ebay for $42 shipped :D

I just need to find a reasonably priced non-managed gig switch for my file transferring needs.
 
Pretty much done adding stuff to my rack for now. Latest addition is the top machine.




From top to bottom:

1U server on top: Netscreen IDP100 (basically a Dell PE 1650) with pfsense.

1U Switch on bottom: McData Sphereon 4500, currently not in use, got it free
On that switch there is dlink routers and a dlink switch. Switch is connected straight to internet modem. The wireless dlink router is plugged into said switch, that is my "external" network. The firewall is plugged into the internet switch, then the other router is plugged into the firewall.

4 3U devices below all that: IBM 1710-10U EXP100 SAN enclosures, also not hooked up. Got them with the McData switch. I'm looking into building a server to interface with that equipment and I will probably make it into an iSCSI SAN or just a NAS and use it for backups, test environments, torrents, that kind of stuff. As cool as that equipment looks it's old and unsupported and impossible to get parts for, so I'm not risking production data on it so it's more to play around with.

Ironicly, the tower sitting next to the rack is the most critical and powerful piece of equipment I have, it's a Core2Quad box with 5 1TB drives in raid 5, so about 3.7TB of space and a 750TB drive for OS and has 8GB of ram. It's my main server. I run all my VMs on there and the host OS also does file, email, dns and so on. I will eventually buy a rackmount case for it.

My future plans for the rack are to build walls on both sides, add doors then paint the added construction all black, essentially making it a closed rack. May look into locking it too to make it harder for a thief to get into, if ever my house gets broken into. They are more likely to go for the lose stuff like the TV.

The back portion of the new rack addition will also have tons of receptacles, I'm thinking groups of 3 duplex plugs, 1 foot apart from top to bottom on both sides. At the bottom, these will convert to 6 individual heavy duty extension cord with plug end, which I can plug into a UPS or surge bar. This will allow me to spread the load across several circuits/UPSes. I may run a sub panel, or just individual circuits from the main, and there will be 6 individual circuits that the UPSes/surge bars will plug into. Only have 1 UPS now but will add more later. This will make for a very neat install as far as electrical goes. Monoprice sells power cords in various lengths including very short ones, like 2 feet.
 
They do seem to have lot of options, though my plan is probably going to cost about 100 bucks so that is hard to beat. :D
 
Whats that like $10k plus for that fusion splicer :) this is why we sub out our fiber work

that switch doesn't make a noise at all! You must be thinking of a different model! it's only a 10/100 sono to be replaced with a 24port gigabit switch.
 
If you ever have to move that Fusion Splicer to another city you may want to drive it through...Airport security lol. Did you all have trouble getting it delivered? (don't know if you had to go through Customs)...
 
@Adam - I think we paid a bit over $16k for the Splicer, Cleaning Kit, and 2 Cleavers. Well worth it for the amount of fiber we be splicing over the next few years. We have another 60s as well due to the fact that when we're doing restoration on damaged OSP fiber it needs to be spliced in two spots 9/10 times. Saves a lot of time when you're splicing a 96ct fiber in two spots - especially when it's -10 outside and the only path for network to the outside world.

@NTAuthourity - if you can believe it our old Sumitomo splicer was worse. Had a giant aluminium case that looked like it housed plutonium. This one is way less intimidating once you get it out of the case.
 
New Voip phone Building a Trix box at home to do my own home voip solution, the trixbox is hosted in a vm on Server 2008 R2 werking perfectly.

Rackmount server on it's side till i order my processor, currently using my Core 2 duo 3gig with 4 gigs ram few hard drives running 2008r2 and trixbox in vm's.

Cool, dashpuppy. how did you manage to install the voip server in a VM, don't you also need a special phone card? Or were you able to get the VM to see the card? I want to eventually setup a voip system at home too eventually, probably asterisk.

I was playing with Trixbox a while back on Xenserver. Posted a few blog entries http://tickett.wordpress.com/tag/trixbox/

I didn't actually hook it up to PSTN. I only got as far as internal use. I think you can get an "appliance" like http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3508 (i think this actually does the opposite job to what you want).

Ideally you'd actually be getting rid of your analog line and using an online provider who'll forward the calls to your VOIP equipment.

This is if i want to bring in a voip provider into the network, the customer im working with has 2 anolog lines that they want to use with the new system. They don't want to change their numbers.

Right now im just using a friends Trixbox, my phone is at my house, his trixbox is at his house, we are about 20 plus hour drive away.

He pays about 120$ month for unlimited voip calling to a sip provider with number etc etc.

Soon, i will be using a internal card that will allow me to use my digital phone line that i have at home, ie a digital phone box with 2 analogue phone jacks witch will be connected to my trixbox server.

Alot of people where i live use the digial phone box, and will set it up just like how i am going to be doing. Some have other phone lines example from Telus.

for your trixbox why not use google voice? its free..
i have 3 google voice lines in and out and a backup link using Skype (sistosip)
my trixbox is complete with IVR, tides report, fax to PDF, current weather / airport delays.

Has this been reliable for you? I originally setup one trunk on my asterisk box using gvoice, intending to use it only as a backup since I figured it could go away at any time, and it didn't exactly seem simple or reliable because of the way gvoice makes the connection.

Google voice inbound thru sipgate and Ipkall works great (i use both for redundancy).
Ive never had a inbound call drop.

Outbound works ~great (only maybe 3 real dropped calls out of hundreds)
The issue is google sometimes changes stuff up, so you have to redirect fire. Thats why i have the skype as a backup (since the great skype outage, ive had to change my plans)

Lately google seems to be stable... no changes have been required...
So its about as good as the sip providers....

where did you you find your ip phones? i had asterisk setup and that was the only thing stopping was finding reasonable voip phones, i dont want to have to take out a loan against the house to get my phones up and running lol

It doesn't matter if your spending the money on expensive hookers. I for one am tired of looking at it untangle this and untangle that. Post up the help that these people ask. Leave the stickers and extra's for the untangle. They like that shit over there.

in all seriousness, the few times ive used untangle i felt like I was playing on the crayola website or something. Real network engineers dont use the GUI... to each their own I guess
