hello all im looking to find a flight sim, im looking for something thats very realistic with online gameplay. Id prefere the controls and all to be pretty much manual with the option of making some of them automated as i dont have alot of experience with flight sims.

Ive read up on a few the one that seems to stand out is the IL-2 sturmovic seriers, however i am finding the games impossible to find even on amazon.

Does anyone know of any others that come close to this, or where i can find it?

Also i need a good flight stick to go along with it,

IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 is available on Steam and Good Old Games. I think it's an updated version that includes all the previous titles so it should be what you are looking for. As far as similar games I can't offer any help there, sorry.

As mentioned you must simply have IL2-1946, which is the best WWII simulator, but you need two more to really round out your simming.

1) Rise of Flight: Is an insane WWI Simulator, amazing graphics and online play really make this a must have.

2) Over Flanders Fields: Possibly the most comprehensive single player WWI experience you will ever find. The graphics are not as good as Rise of Flight and the multiplayer is limited, but the single player experience will not dissapoint.

I fly both IL2 and Rise of Flight. Both are excellent games IMO and are awesome to play coop or pvp online.

If you get IL2 look into getting the HSFX mod, it's a supermod that adds a bunch of features, graphic enhancements, and better sounds.

Yeah IL2:1946 or if you want modern day fighter combat/ground attack, look for Lock-On, Gold pack preferably.

If you want realism then nothing beats Falcon 4.0. It's more of a simulator than a game. If you can handle flying a one-hour long CAP mission, do no shooting, and RTB, then it's a game for you. If you are looking to blow things up, then look for something else.

It's a twelve-year old game with a big modding community but its real time campaign mode and realistic avionics have yet be surpassed today.

Even better...

Free Falcon

Free Falcon, or Falcon 4 (or F4:AF) are both good, if not slightly dated, they still look pretty good given falcon 4.0 is 12 years old.

DCS: Blackshark is a good one also, if you do not mind helicopter sim. It is ultra realistic, down to being able to operate 99% of the switches, gauges etc, hell you can do a 70ish item start up sequence if that is your thing. They released a patch that will allow you to play multiplayer with "Lockon: Flaming Cliffs" and there is a co-op mode for DCS:BS by itself.

They are working on a DCS: A-10 version also.

yeah im waiting for the A-10 version.. not really into the helicopter sim..

Any suggestions for a more modern blow things up game? Tried HAWX, but the story line was kinda cheesy and didn't last very long.

Yup, that or Open Falcon: http://www.f4support.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?15-Open-Falcon-4.7

Unfortunately the market interest in combat flight sims is at an all time low and the two "latest" moden flight sims would be Falcon 4.0 (and its mods) and LOMAC (Lock-On Moden Combat). Have you tried that one? There is also Jane's USAF which is over ten years old I believe. It's still fun but is a lot more arcadish when compared to Falcon 4.0 or even LOMAC.

I miss the old Janes titles. USAF was it? You could fly just about any modern US aircraft, and it wasn't super complex like Falcon 4.0

edit: Iron Eagle beat me to it

Will have to try out LOMAC. Falcon 4.0 was a bit too much for me, though I wouldn't mind taking another stab at it now that I'm an "adult" with supposedly more "patience." Thanks for the recommendation guys.

I was once at a local airshow and asked a F-16 pilot whether he knew about Falcon 4.0. He said he played it regularly. I asked him what he thought of it and he said the avionics of the game were pretty darn close to the real thing. Of course, Falcon 4.0 models Block 50/52 and he flew a Block 30 so there were minor differences.

Rise of flight is insanely difficult. I'm not sure I would even recommend it to a person who hasn't flown a real plane. We're talkin' engine stalls galore here... and sometimes for no reason at all... I had to switch to arcade mode, which was kind of unsatisfying.

Thought about Microsoft's Flight Simulator X? Lots of plane packs out there, if you are brushing up at your desk as sim time.

I disagree with this, as long as you don't do do jerking actions and understand the basic of flight you should do fine. Wood & Canvas frame + 1917 160-200hp engine != F-16 performance. You gotta be patient, and a good shot, but the singleplayer does more than enough to get you ready for multiplayer. The game has a great trainer.

Slightly off topic, but think about picking up a TrackIR if you like flight sims, I love mine.

well i followed to earlier advice on il-2 1946 and bought it, i started out and my one big dissapointment is the tutorials only being videos and not more "hands on". i can take off just fine its the combat thats screwing me, are there any detailed guides out there for it?

When you think you're close enough, get closer.

Look up a book called Fighter Combat by Robert Shaw.

is lock on my best bet for a modern flight sim? checking past reviews it didnt get great marks

If pretty much is if you don't want it to get to complicated (By that, I mean if you don't want to study hundreds of pages of manuals to understand the avionics). If you do, it's Falcon 4.0.

You may be just experiencing the gravity fed carburetor on certain planes.. stick forward = dead engine. Everything must be a roll in the direction you want, followed by stick back. Only use stick forward on landings, and be gentle with it.

Go with something other than Rise of Flight if you're equally interested in the two games. RoF's shitty business model shouldn't be supported. Fuck spending over $100 just to get a decent roster of planes.

Yeah, and I could say "Fuck spending $180 a year to Blizzard to level a char and do raids" or "Fuck MS FSX I have to buy a joystick to be any good".

If the game is fun, I don't see a problem with it. I believe there is even a trial of RoF on their website, so what is there to lose?

I believe lock on would be the best simulatorish game for you. DCS Black Shark is another choice, but the game has a steep learning curve, though it is pretty fun.

If you're looking for another HAWX type game look at Wings of Prey. WW2 HAWXish, jump in and fly, not much story, flight game. Graphics are absolutely beautiful, but the game is kinda repetitive.

As with all true Simulators, none of them will truly be easy at all at first, and will take some actual training in order to be able to do anything to complete a mission. Hell look at Falcon 4.0's 800 page manual (not exaggerating).

If you have any questions about IL2 give me a shout, I play the game basically every day.

im getting better with IL-2 in that i can go an entire mission without stalling :p problem is i cant shoot shite down and i have trouble following my flight leader in some of the missions. Falcon 4.0 looks tempting now, if you go through all the tutorials and such is it manageable? it seems kinda daunting at first

LOL!

Uh... okay.

IL2 is the king of prop/early jet flight sims still, with LOMAC following close behind and taking up the more modern-era crowd. Rise of Flight is a decent engine but its still very buggy with an absolutely shitty business model and DRM and absolutely should not be supported. Only 4 planes are included with the 50 dollar game, and you can't play online without buying the "DLC" which is 10+ era aircraft at 7 bucks EACH, plus DRM that requires authentication every time you load the game (even single player). I'm about as big a flight combat sim die-hard as you will meet (I got a 600 dollar hardware setup) and the way Rise of Flight has approached the sim community absolutely sickens me.

As for Wings of Prey, lets not even go there. I got plenty to say, but it's all bad, and probably can be found on any sim forum. :p

Know before buying the Thrustmaster Cougar that it requires aftermarket modification (and usually repairs) to be effective. Wiki has the basics:

I use CH, personally, and I probably won't ever go back to anything else.

thanks guys ill look into all of these, as far as a controller is concerned is:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Logitec...8188350464&skuId=5796515&st=5796515&cp=1&lp=1

any good? i use logitech mice and keyboards not sure how their joystick is...its seems pretty cheap for something logitech

I have the force feedback version of it (Force 3D Pro).

The force 3D pro is good enough for casual flying. The patentiometers are smooth and steady. Only downside is that i'm actually ending up turning off the force feedback. This isn't like a wheel where you have enough room to fight the controls. On a joystick move 1cm and you'll end up banking hard. So you can pretty much say goodbye to precision flying. Particularly when you're trying to manually aim your guns in a dogfight and the stick getting kicked all over the place..
