Hi,
I have a 5.1 surround sound system for my pc. Only problem is, all the speakers are sitting infront of me on my desk and it feels like 3.1. This is because i dont have anything behind to put speakers on. Since this is the case, I have seriously been thinking about getting a 5.1 headset. Only problem is which one. I dont want 3d simulation headset, but the real 5.1 like the Zalman 5.1 or the LTB 5.1, both which I have been searching and reading reviews about. Everyone gets different results. One guys gives them 1 outta 5 and says they're awful, other says that their the best thing he has ever heard. So I'm pretty confused right now as of which Headset to get (not just these, I would like if you have reccomendations of others that you might find better). So this is basically my problem. All I do is play counter strike cz, so knowing where the other guy is, is critical. I'm Cal-i :p Thanks for your help in advance.

get a decent pair of regular non 5.1 crap phones... if u want gaming? HD595 HD555 ath-a500 ath-a900 sony MDR-XD400 beyer dt770's etc.. check out head-fi.org

yes the headphone league, overcomes another obstacle in the fight against 5.1 headphones.

REMEMBER KIDS: FRIENDS TO LET OTHER FRIENDS BUY 5.1 HEADPHONES!!!

ok. But I am almost never gonna listen to music on these. For music, I turn on my 5.1 speakers. I only need it for gaming. I will seriously never ever use it for anything else. :p

The point is the 5.1 headphones won't even give you desired 5.1 in gaming applications either. Use CMSS and and 2.0 for headphones. If you have a 5.1 system and want 5.1 for gaming then you should be using those.

With that being said, let me repeat what the others have said, don't buy 5.1 headphones. 5.1 headphones will not give you real 5.1 channel sound. And for the record, we have had many many threads about this exact topic. Anything anyone posts in this thread will only be a repeat of those. Do a bit of searching and you should find all you need to know.

Could you give more of a breakdown( price points and features) of all those acronyms and model numbers you just spit out :p If the post was good enough it could make it to sticky status.

Anyone know when 7.1 phones will hit the market? And where exactly do they fit the sub?

You've got to be kidding me.

That's the question that drives you. Is he kidding, or have I lost even more respect for the human race? Is Bose really better sound, or is that sound achieved through marketing?

That's what kills me. I mean I'd like to think he's joking, but the lack of emotion in these posts leaves me wondering sometimes. :D

Oh, you sit on the sub. Or strap it to your ass if you're using them on the go. Bass isn't really bass unless it registers in the 'ol pants-o-meter. The good mobile systems have two subs. One you strap to your ass, and the other one is built into the included helmet. Just think about it. Where else could they put it? Along with registering on the pants-o-meter, any really good system needs to make your fillings rattle. :p

LOL Zandor.. hahaha funny you mention sitting on the sub.. Buttkicker

And 5.1 phones truely do suck. Your way better off with 2.0 phones and X-fi's CMSS. You shouldent so easily dismiss headphones for music either.. unless you've got one hell of an audio setup 150$ phones will destroy just about any speaker setup south of a grand. My DT880's are in a whole different league then my Klispch Promedia 5.1's. The differnce is like going from 20$ Oem 2.1's to 350$ Multimedia speakers.

Mike

Well, received my Sony MDR-XD400 and HD485 today.... let me tell you, if you
re gaming.. grab the XD400... I pumped up CS:S today and WOWOWOWOW... real nice soundstage and only cost under 70 bucks.

and music, sounds much better than my z-5500.. period.

PC150's work really well. I have them, but I'd shoot for the 160s now. In CS 1.6 I cna hear people over 30yds away.

Are there any good clip-on mics out there? I want to use my Senn HD-25's to game, and if I want to use a headest I have to wrap another one around my neck. I know there are some boom-mic attachments that sportcasters use but I'm assuming that's a little expensive.

HD485.. which I just received today isn't that great compared to teh XD400.. there's definetely soundstage.. but the cans are jsut too laidback and warm sounding... I mean I played scoutnknives today in CS:S... and the scout sounds muffled.. on the HD485... ( which is badass for music) but on the XD400 it sounds more natural. but I am gonna go test it again and see... b/c I only did a quick test ith teh HD485. BRB!

NVM sounds decent.... just the XD400 and the HD485 has different sound... but it sounds good .

hmmm, im thinkin ill go with the PC160s and a soundcard upgrade.. currently on onboard..

A dedicated headphone amp is a nice touch as well, particularly if your sound card has a line out/pre-out. Might as well skip that (comparatively) cheap on-board amp as well.

I keep my headphone amp at work for listening to music. I don't bother with headphones at home since I live alone, but it's quite nice to have a decent setup at the office. One of these days I really should upgrade. I've got some off brand "IXOS" headphones I picked up at a local audio shop. For some reason I decided I was in a hurry and checked a few places and that was the best I could do for closed headphones. Pretty much all of the really nice ones are open, but they leak out way too much sound to use at my desk at work.

I just had to voice my happiness to see your Bose comment. I have always felt sorry for all the people overpaying for Bose thinking they got the best out there.

On topic: I have 5.1 Klipsch and simply have one of the rear speakers on the floor. It still gives you all the psition info you need, and I would bet as good as most headphones. I will be getting a better headphone set for the few times I need them. Probably going to get X-Fi anyway so I'll get a good stereo set with the cmss
