NEC LCD2690

Just wanted to report in that I also got my 2690 w/ SpectraView II 2 days ago. Mine is a 4B revision monitor and as far as I can tell, it is completely silent -- even while adjusting the brightness levels from 0 to 100%. I haven't had a chance to really go over the monitor in detail and play with every option (haven't even calibrated it yet), but so far I'm very happy with it.

I did find one fault with the monitor though, it looks like I have one pixel that does not have a functional blue and red sub-pixel. It's located in the lower right corner. Because of it's location I don't find this to be an issue at all. I didn't even notice it until I started playing with an LCD testing app I d/l. Granted, for the money I'd like perfection, but 1 pixel out of over 2.3 million isn't something I'm going to pull my hair out for especially for something I wouldn't notice during normal use.

Imho a 1400 euros monitor must have 0 pixel with problem
must be silent

The more i read this 3D the more it seem that it's rare to find a 2690 without problem.
Hope that my 21 crt will last somt other years and let this absurd tecnology and absurd warranty change

I think somone had asked a question similar to this before. This is from the software developer here in regards to the 2690.

1. Images will always look oversaturated on non-color managed applications because there will be no gamut mapping/compression of the image done. So the colors in the image will go directly to the screen without going through the Color Management System. i.e. images that were intended for an sRGB display, will be expanded to the very large gamut of the LCD2690 and appear super-saturated. There is no way around this.

2. If you are calibrating using Optix Pro (or anything other than spectraview), then you want to adjust the white point of the screen as close to your target white point using the monitor’s color controls. This will reduce any corrections that are done in the 8 but LUTs on the video card. i.e. If you are using a 6500K target, then set the monitor to the 6500K preset, or use the RGB Gain controls to manually adjust as close to that as possible.

I received my NEC 2690 yesterday with a lot of apprehension after reading this forum.
I had ordered it about 3 weeks ago and live in Ontario Canada. I also included the option of the spectraview software calibration. I am happy to report that the unit I have is excellent in every aspect. I am a very happy customer.;)

May I ask where you bought it ? I ordered two of them weeks ago,and bought them at NCIX,to find out a few minutes ago via email (I sent in a trouble ticket at 4 am) that there supplier has them in stock in Toronto but get this, NCIX will not be getting them in stock until the 23rd of April, then, after that they will be shipped out !!!!

NCIX is the largest online reseller on the net in Canada....

Others have ordered them according to the threads on thier forum, and others want to but want to wait until they are in stock, which they are when doing a stock check, but their
csr agents say they will sit there for near two weeks !!!!! :( Me = Pissed...

I got my order this morning .... or I thought I did...The purolator guy comes up to my door, with a box that is 12x12x14 inches.... It had the sata burner, and a skiff of cdr's I ordered but no 24" LCD's boxes....

sorry for going off topic but I am a little pissed and was expecting them a week+ ago.
I realize this has nothing to do with you Trav, but after the Nec press release today on Engadget about them shipping on the 23rd in Europoe and east Asia....it makes me wonder if they are being held for a worldwide launch.

No Clue on cost.

Yes it will have a glossy screen.
This is pretty interesting stuff dude!
Which panel is used in this NEC LCD2690, Samsung or LG Philips maybe?

I look at the specs and most likely we are dealing here with a (A)S-IPS LGPhilips panel.

Is this rather big pixelpics not irritating meaning can you still see the raster or not?

Looking at some specs in German right now.
Display: Type H-IPS A-TW Pol. (Horizontal IPS with advanced True wide polarizer)
1920x1200 (same as my Eizo 24" so bigger pixelpic)
Hor.178-vert.178
400cd/m2
800:1
8ms (G2G), 16ms (W2B & B2W)
16,77 Mil Colors

TIP: Use Eizo Monitor Test to adjust your TFT manual.

I can only speak for the US and Canada but product has been shipping to both regions. I check inventory and outbound shipments every morning and product has been and US etailers and distributors have stock along with canadaian distys.

Can you please tell me a bit more about the fix for noisy displays. I am baffled that some people seem to get barely discernible hums, at least two of us have easily audible hums - I can hear mine from 60cms even with the radio on two feet to my left - and others have no sound at all coming from their displays. My display has been to NEC UK and been fixed but the noise is still there.

Should those of us who have not had the noise removed by fixes seek (and expect to receive) replacement displays from NEC and if so what serial numbers or revision number should we ask for in expectation they will be silent?

Thanks

David

I would verify what they actually fixed on the display. The noise is being caused by two transistors (sorry dont have the documetns in front of me to say exactly what they are), near the power supply, that are too close together and due to their polarity are causing a resonence which you hear as a hum.

I have still not seen the list of serial numbers that we effected. I can tell you it was pretty much the first production run and that is it. Thats why almost every case has been in Europe since Europe took just about the entire first production run.

Shitty deal we in Europe pay the most for that stuff and get the most buggy firstliners.

Pretty smart since we are the ones paying the bill for them the quickest.

Not fair!

I can confirm that the two transistors were dealt with when my 2690 was repaired but the high pitched hum is still present. Am I likely to get a silent 2690 if I ask NEC to replace the one they fixed? The customer service person I spoke to who relayed the technicians comments to me owned up that the technician had said that all the 2690s produce some audible noise. Is this still true? Even with post-production-fixed 2690s?

The hum is pitched about a G# four notes below middle C.

I like the display very much but I do want a silent one.

Grateful for some further advice, please.

I have to say at least Travbomb is honest...

Yeah, and quick to answer, and polite as well. :) I am not pissed with Nec or its employee's...How could I be,I am a little peeved that these things are sitting in a large warehouse 5.5 hours from my home, but I must wait until NCIX decides to
order a bunch into BC,then ship them all the way back to Ontario where I live.... I guess they want to wait until they have a bigger order to fill ? :(

Next day air from Toronto,to Burnaby or Vancouver, cannot be cheap on a 27+ pound box ! Never mind 2 or 4.... with lots on order,I guess its cheaper to wait until Monday when they have more in,then ship them all out at the same time.
Then start filling orders... I'm rambling and derailing the thread,I'll stop...apologies to all

Thanks again for replying travbomb. :)

My understanding was that these units could be completely silent and I think there are people on this thread who have them. Also the few that i have worked have been silent too. But it is kind of a subject thing. If you have suprisingly better hearing than the rest of us you may hear it and we dont? Not sure. It may also be a voltage thing with Europe causing the transistors to continually resonate a little bit no matter what. Again not sure.

... It may also be a voltage thing with Europe causing the transistors to continually resonate a little bit no matter what...
... which would lead to the interesting question, if there is anyone with a revision 4B or higher in Europe, who does not hear anything in a silent environment.

It may be that our hearing is more sensitive than usual. However, it is clear to me that the UK Tech who did "the fix" on my 2690 thought that the UK 2690s that he had seen produced some residual hum but he (NEC) took the view that that amount of hum was reasonable.

My view is that if UK (and European more generally) 2690s have residual hum because of their voltage (or whatever reason), NEC should now say this in the 2690's specifications so that those like us with hearing that is sensitive are warned and can avoid this display. Owners like us who can hear, and object to, the high pitched hum should be offered our money back I think as we were not offered this piece of specification information when we considered the purchase of this display.

I say this because I assume that no European 2690s of whatever revision will be silent if the problem is European voltages.

If this is a native problem for NEC 2690s is it also a problem for the Dell 27" and in due course for the Samsung 27"? If not, why is the NEC 2690 affected but not the others?

It still seems to me pretty irritating that a cheap 3 year old Dell 17" I used while my 2690 was being "fixed" manages to be silent where the very expensive 2690 does not.

The only hope is perhaps that by some miracle new editions of the 2690 will be truely silent and we can swap our noisy one for one of those. But I am not hopeful.

David

David, what is holding you back from exchanging it? Or better yet, can't you take it to a computer store, preferrably a NEC certified dealer store, and have them give you a second opinion? At least that way you get confirmation that it's the monitor and not you (or vice-a-versa, but I suspect it's the monitor unless you have "dog like hearing")

I don't have dog-like hearing, but my hearing is quite acute, and I am quite perceptive to sound, as I am a classical pianist, conservatory trained. I can tell you for a fact my 2690 makes NO SOUND whatsover in a very quiet room. So don't let tech support tell you that a hum is normal, because I know for a fact it is not. Maybe the absence of a hum is abnormal for the 2690? I doubt it, as there are others who have experienced no humming.
I received my SpectraView II Kit, and all went well with the hardware calibration, I couldn't be more pleased with this monitor. There are no dead pixels or backlight bleed, the colors are phenomenal. I don't do any gaming, I do mostly photo image editing, so the image quality is of utmost importance to me.

Yes, but if it would just be the hearing, why can we record the sound...

neither am I. This should be a lesson for all early adopters...
I was lucky and got my monitor with Rev 1E back. Its hum is a little bit more silent than that of the Rev 3A I'll be sending back. The Rev 1E has a more high pitched more annoying sound, but seems to be a little bit more silent altogether. The Rev 3A unit did also have a dead pixel in the mid third of the screen and I couldn't imagine HOW annoying this can be. So I think until NEC finds a solution for the (maybe European) humming we will have to live with it.

don't forget, it has been suspected from the start, that it's primarily the European version, that's affected. as travbomb pointed out, there have been nearly no complaints in the US.

Ok, trustedreviews just release a review on the 2690. Im not sure if they are recommending it or not. Here is the most compelling part of the review:

"The overwhelming feature that really came across when testing this monitor was its level of sharpness and the strong true colours. Looking closely at photos on this display next to a 24in Dell 2407 was like seeing them with my glasses cleaned. There was lots of visible detail and true vibrant colours without being oversaturated or forced, while the DisplayMate tests showed a beautiful progression in the colour and greyscale scaling tests."

But here is the recommendation (I just dont understand where this came from):

"Verdict - While gamers will find much to enjoy on the MultiSync LCD2690WUXi the Dell 30in will offer better value. However, for those who are looking to finally replace a much trusted CRT or go properly large for professional use, the NEC is a very fine choice. It offers a good chunk of the ability of the SpectraView Reference 21 without the huge cost, while offering a larger size and greater resolution to boot."

I don't understand the rev version of my display - there are black dots next to the 1, 2 and A, B and F number and letter options.

I think it might be worth exchanging this monitor for another from NEC provided I can be 100% sure that the model I get is from a production run that includes the fixed transistors. I'll ring them on Monday. Do we know yet if there is a silent European rev version?

If I have to sell the 2690 I suppose I can go to a Dell 27" which people in that display's thread here say is silent - though of course if they are from the US then maybe the same voltage problem applies and the fact their displays are silent may not be true for European versions......

Seemed like a pretty fair review, but 30" better value? I dunno. I thought about it, but 30" is just too big for my computing station, I can't work with just a single dual link DVI connection (I have a classics box I need to hook up), and I'm not interested in having to go SLi/Xfire to drive it well. I don't want a barebones "dummy panel" either, which all of the 30" are.

You pays your money and makes your choice - I don't regret mine at all. A 30" will appeal more to some folks, but I don't care for these sort of blanket statements that make assumptions about the people buying products for one use or another.

"Other options inside the advanced OSD include the ability to turn overdrive on or off. This overboosts the voltage going to the pixels to get them to twist faster reducing response time – making them respond more quickly. However, this is at the risk of losing colour accuracy."

I also question the accuracy of this statement. Overdrive is a bit more complex than "overboosting the voltage going to the pixels" and doesn't appear to have any impact on accuracy that I noted while testing SpectraView. If the reviewer wishes to make such admonitions, he has the tools at hand to test this out - so why not do so?

I guess thats why I put the link to the review on the post. It seems to me the reviewer likes everything about the display...even raves about it...then in the end makes a statement about a 30 dell with no backup.

In the recent maximumpc mag review of 6 large displays over 24 inch, the reviewer strongly "does not" recommend any 30 inch displays - quote:

"regarding 30 inch displays category as a whole, don't expect any onscreen display controls for tweaking anything other than brightness. these screens lack an internal scalar, the necessary component for making any adjustment to a screens picture, be it resolution, color, gamma, etc. the cost of silicon needed to perform these operations across this many pixels is simply too high to be practical. Thus, any scaling must happen via the videocard, a less-than-optimal solution. Its an interesting paradox that these very large screens, which are a natural fit for content creators, offer compromised control over picture quality.

Here's another interesting paradox. these huge ultra-high-res screens are hobbled by HD content. Today's graphics cards carry HDCP over only a single-link interface, and without a scaler, the monitor's only single-link res is half of its maximum: 1280x800. Not even 1920x1080! That's ridiculous."

Its simple really,as most LCD reviews are half assed at best,as this is yet again shown in this latest one. :( I wish the [H] would start doing screen reviews,or at least take a look
at doing it....

I started a thread months ago,and have still not received even one response from my fellow members. The one and only response is my own, several weeks later....

I recently took delivery of a new NEC LCD2690WUXi in Australia. It is the euro version
REV:34 B

There seems to be NO noise and one dead pixel at the bottom RHS corner.

BACK LIGHT BLEED !
Here are some images of the BACK LIGHT BLEED which is the problem.
http://www.pixelplay.com.au/nec/
When sitting infront of the monitor the screen has a magenta hew at the bottom left hand corner 15+ cm towards the centre. This was confirmed once using the NaViSet software test, using the black background test pattern. As you can see this increases as the viewing angle changes. The main problem that it is noticable in the normal viewing position.
I have the monitor profiled with the Luminance set to 120
PLEASE NOTE these images are of the same monitor, I am hoping that this problem does not represent a majority of the new NEC 2690 out there.
I will be sending it back to NEC on Monday.

To those who have the monitor do the NaViSet test for yourself and see the results.

Cheers

Mine looks like this. It's not actually backlight bleed (that will appear more whitish/bluish), it's panel warpage. Try going over the panel with your hand and a soft cloth and you might see that you can move the uneven areas around, but not really get rid of them.

The magenta cast that you see is a refraction effect inherent to IPS screens. The warpage can make it more prominent, but all IPS will do this.

Some of the conventional wisdom out there says driver scaling is better looking than HW scaling... maybe on some panels, but 2690 HW scaling is noticeably sharper than what I get with 100.87 ForceWare. This more or less goes towards the point I made about not wanting a dummy panel. That puts me at the mercy of drivers. No thanks.

I got an RMA authorized on mine over the issue, unfortunately I ran into some bad panels with the replacements I received so I'm still with the original, but the trouble ticket is still open. I told NEC North America support that I'd like to wait a few weeks for some later production to try out and they agreed to that. NEC support here seems to be more eager to please than their European counterpart, so hopefully in your part of the world they behave more like they do in mine.

Tried it by putting it on an hour. It just kicked in... There is a timer counting down with an option to press any button on display to extend it an hour. I have been using the display while waiting, so it doesn't react upon inputs from keyboard, mouse or machine. After countdown, the screen turns itself off, so I have to use power button and turn it on again to use it. Works like a charm. I'm suspecting that you might have a faulty unit?
I don't mean the off timer. I mean the display won't go to sleep when told through power management settings on the computer. None of the other monitors I've used had trouble with this.

Try putting your ear up to the top near the right side, where the vent holes are. There should be some noise there. That's the only noise I hear. It's not that loud though.

I wish I knew that before I got the monitor. You said yourself in the wide gamut thread:

I wise man once told me "you an dumb something down but not up, so why wouldnt you want to get as much as you could"
Now I find out that's not true for this monitor.

The lag bothers me more. I feel like I'm throwing the mouse cursor around instead of the mouse cursor following my movements. Can you talk to engineering to see what they can do about the lag?

Here are the results of my lag test. I used Quartz Composer on a Power Mac G5 with a GeForce 6800 Ultra to create a timer based on the system time. The displays were mirrored at 1024x768 at 60 Hz with expansion set to off on the LCD. All pictures were taken with overdrive on.

Most of the pictures show a difference of two frames (33-34 ms):

There are many more pictures showing a difference of 33-34 ms. I just picked some of the good ones.

A few pictures show a difference of one frame (16-17 ms):

A few pictures show a difference of three frames (50-51 ms):

I think I can safely conclude that this monitor has about two frames of lag.

Usually not.
I have 11 other NEC monitors in my working and private environment. There is one single faulty pixel on one single unit. Not to mention, that all of them are absolutely silent. This very good experiences made me choose the 2690 in the first place. So it seems that the faults are rather specific to this model. (at least I hope so)

I did this, just put my ear up to the top right near the vents, and there is STILL no sound. Totally SILENT.
Because of the European issues, I am thinking this sounds more like a voltage problem, and I still wonder if the fact that I use a UPS unit (APC1500) has eliminated any humming in my particiular case. Could this be a factor?????

Hi David,

an exchange is not going to work, since i managed to exchange it twice, but all I got has been a unit that was still noisy and had a dead pixel. Since I already tried to sell it, but would only have gotten 900 Euros for it, I will have to keep it for now. I will call NEC support from time to time to see if it they found a fix for it but in the long term i will sell it, when i can afford another monitor. I still wonder if the noise issue has been fixed with rev 4B. If we could be really sure of that, we could try to argue, that only an exchange can solve the issue, since a repair is apparently not possible.

I don't mean the off timer. I mean the display won't go to sleep when told through power management settings on the computer. None of the other monitors I've used had trouble with this.

Power management works also as it should.

I think I can safely conclude that this monitor has about two frames of lag.

This is bad! I don't notice any lag with mine, but I might be one of those lucky ignorant of this, or the G5 mouse corrects this a bit for me. I'll have to test this myself later.

Here is same average as you, though they again didn't get under 22 ms in their test:

Both tests differs much from Aquila76's benchmark again.
Nothing here is consistent. I wonder why?

Did you perform any tests with the sRGB function vs. changing one of the presets into 6500K and check if the gammut got changed from wide to regular?

Do you have a dead pixel or dead subpixel?

I have revision 3B I think (dots with A+B and 1+2+3) without these sound problems. I can hear sounds only when putting ear directly towards vents, but I cannot hear anything even with ear against the screen.

What do you think about this screen besides these issues? I was lucky getting a good specimen, so I might complain a bit less. Still, I get suprised that you want to sell this instead of getting a good one.

According to my personal preferences, there is little to no other screens that can compete with this beauty in this price range.
I love the image quality of this. Have no dead pixels or stuck pixels, no sound issues, no backlight issues, I don't feel any input lag (though that might have more to do with my abilities, since it looks like this have lag). The screen is very responsive and great to game with.

So far, I have a great experience with this screen.

What I want to map a bit more is the ability for this screen to limit itself to sRGB color space and how the wide gammut effects it (besides giving juicier colors). :)

You really don't find this screen great except your issues?

I had one completely dead pixel on the third replacement so I stayed with the 2nd replacement. Of course the screen is great except the issues. I'm just very sensitive to noise, and probably would be annoyed by the noise of your screen also.

There is definitely some unresolved noise issue - both Rao and I hear it and are bothered by it. I can hear it now sitting over 2ft 6in from the screen with a talk radio station on quite loudly to my left. The high pitched hum cuts through - even though my 2690 has had the official fix applied to it. The display is other wise fantastic (no dead pixels) and I would love to be able to keep it - but the noise really irritates me. If an exchange won't work - because the noise problem is endemic in european 2690s - all I can do is push the display far enough away from me so the noise is less audible (about 4ft) and turn up the fonts size. This is pretty unacceptable. The noise is a high pitched hum or whine and is pitched at G Sharp, four notes below middle C - I don't know if that makes it possible for it's source to be identified by someone expert in these things. Maybe if I knew what was making the hum it would be possible to have a useful dialogue with NEC about it.
