My Far Cry 2 Quick Thoughts, AWESOME

Yea I'm really not that impressed with the whole game. Was definitely excited about the "grand theft auto" style of it, non-linear, etc. But it feels very repetitive. The game seems to mostly consist of driving half way across the map, fight a bunch of checkpoints that you've dispensed multiple times, find your objective, kill it/blow it up/etc, drive half way across the map, get new objective, then repeat. It seems that 75% of the time is made up of driving and defeating check points over and over.

Not only that, but the guns and actual game play itself feels kinda sloppy. Every semi and auto weapon I've used feels clunky, not clean at all like a COD type feel.

I've only played about 6 hours of it, maybe it will improve, maybe the new weapons and upgrades will help. But unless there is some sort of change where you are not constantly repeating the drive-checkpoint-drive-objective routine (ie helicopter) I can't see myself sticking around to play this.

Everyone seems to love the game so what am I missing? Do you guys not mind the amount of times driving around? There are many aspects I'm impressed with like the map system and explosion "feel" but overall I feel like I wasted $50.

If you accidentally bump the mouse to hard to the left or right your view will completely turn away from the road ahead. Terrible things usually ensue immediately afterwards.

No officer, I did NOT see that I was running head on into a wildebeest. Roads? Comon officer I'm in a jeep! Who needs roads? Wait wait why are you pulling out your nightstick?

Why would anyone let go of the mouse while driving anyway?

I believe people get headaches from this game not because of an FOV issue, but because the games lighting is specifically designed to be kind of like it really is in some parts of Africa, with the sun being so harsh that it hurts your eyes and makes it hard to see in dark areas. This lighting forces you to concentrate much harder to try and see what is on the screen, which results in a headache.

The easiest way to scout checkpoints is to use the monacle as you are shown in the first 20 minutes of training.

Most enemies take between 3 and 5 hits to kill with a standard SMG/Rifle. The reason I think people are needing to hit enemies more than that is because they don't realize they are MISSING a lot of their shots. Aim down the barrel and take one or two shot bursts because three or more shots in one burst will move your point of aim too much. Full auto is best used at VERY short range, which I do regularly. Sneak up close, then run in guns blazing on full auto and drop everyone at the checkpoint in a couple seconds from less than three feet away from each target. Close up blood splatter looks VERY cool (though a tad corny as well). Something you have to see at some point though.

I usually resort to shotguns and IEDs, with a LMG just in case I'm not close enough for the shotgun to do the job.

Also wtf is up with the Machete? I knife a guy on the other side of the checkpoint and everyone knows. Hell sometimes I'm knifing a guy from behind and he turns around mid-knifing animations and pops off a few random shots. Makes me wonder I don't just take their head off with a shotgun blast instead of trying to be stealthy.

This is true. It is a good game, but like GTA, it will become repetitive quickly.

Can anyone tell me how to heal myself without using up a health pack ?

Drink Water. Seriously, There are magic water bottles that give you full health. I found this out tonight when I was down to one bar and out of syrettes but saw a glowing bottle.

I meant healing by performing those "speacial" moves on your self. For example, like twisting your arm back in place.

Assassin's Creed in Africa, I hope not

Assassin's Creed in Africa, I hope not

It really is, grand theft auto never hit my mind when I played this, it's exactly like assassins creed. I can't bring myself to finish the rest of the game, every mission is the same. You want pills? Bring someone travel papers. You want weapons? Destroy a convoy. The story missions aren't so bad, but getting weapons and pills is annoying and boring. The outposts along the roads respawn within minutes. The world really isn't that open seeing as the roads are all in nice carved valleys with walls you can't climb. Taking care of your car is just a non issue because if there is a building or outpost, there are 3 cars surrounding it. Nothing in the game is destructible aside from a few (I mean very few) plants and some boards sometimes.

This game is pretty mediocre to me, not even worth finishing. Some of the stuff is kinda cool, like pulling bullets out of yourself, the day to night sequences, and the grass catching fire I'll give it that.

Eventough Stalker CS is also a buggy piece of kit. At least I'll always have Fallout 3, shouldn't be as "boring" as this.

Stalker Clear sky was a much better game for me because it didn't try to be a 100% sandbox game with destructible environments. It focused on other entertaining aspects and was largely successful. I am almost finished with the game and I am probably only 10% through it. I can't stand the lack of destructible objects. We were promised the old "everything that should be destructible is" bullshit, and you can't even drive through a fence or bale of hay.

Oh, and the Multiplayer is an abject failure.

Oh, and the whole African environment is a failure when there are no predators (lions, alligators, etc) and sparse amounts of poorly rendered herbivores. Why go through the whole first-person-view-at-all-times gimmick if you are going to fail at the rest of the immersion?

I mean people complain about having to explore the environments before getting action take 2 forget about these titles you should stick to Call of Duty or Gears of War :)... You who just race to the next objective without taking in the surroundings or just go out and search for diamonds. This games is not for you so move on :).

the environment are so great I find myself leaving the vehicle and sprinting a lot on foot. Instead of hunting diamonds I wished they would have opted for some Safari simulation. Lots of wild life and you take photos and get payed for that. But well that is not what the action crowd expects having to stalk animals like in Afrika so from a market point of view probably good choice not to include it...

The main problem I have with it is that I just cant get it to run smooth... I run at 50 fps often where I am in Warhead at 25-30 and it runs so much smoother in Warhead. I don´t think all of this is due to the mouse lag. Which makes hunting headshots pretty hard to achieve I find myself lobbing grenades quite a bit. I wonder if it´s because of the streaming it feels so choppy all the time more then just the mouse lag? It kills the immerson a lot so I am hoping for a patch that makes it run better. I have quite a busy schedule so I can wait a bit with playing it.

To clear up the health pack confusions. You pick up health packs and they give you syringes at the bottom left the of the screen which can be used by pressing H or whatever your heal key is, it will use 1 syringe but give you full health.

If you have less than 2 health bars you will need to perform some kind of operation on yourself first, like pulling out bullets, etc. That puts you back to 2 health bars, from there you can press H to heal again to full health.

Has anyone figured out how, when sniping, to just shoot the guy's leg and have his friends rush over? (i.e. the game deception video) Every time I aim at someone's leg, he either dies or nothing happens...

Got the game, played it a bit.

Visually it's excellent, especially considering how well it runs. However, the game feels desolate. Half the time I'm just driving around looking to pick up a mission or something, and I'll come across a checkpoint, but that'll be all the life I see. It's Africa, for god's sake, there's got to be some animals somewhere. I'm trekking through lush vegetation and there isn't even any ambient birdsong, let alone birds or anything.

So far it just feels like loads of really long roads with some men in vests sitting about every kilometre. I'm trying to get the most out of it by roaming about, exploring, looking for the diamond suitcases and capturing safehouses, but it's such a slog to get to or do anything that it's actually quite demotivating, and I'm getting increasingly tempted to just follow the main story and get it over and done with.

I've found that driving with the map out, set to the medium zoom (press 5 to get the map out while driving and use R to set the zoom level)

OK now you know when checkpoints are coming since they're market on the map, either speed through hitting people as you go, or stop a but short, snipe them, throw some grenades/rockets in. Once you know when the points are coming up you'll find it much easier than driving into one you weren't aware of, and if you dislike them you can chose the path of least resistance down the roads avoiding as many checkpoints as possible, or you can pick up one of the faster buggies and speed through them with no real conflict.

Yeah, I do that. It doesn't stop the world feeling barren, though.

Early days yet.

I think I managed to do that once... And I think I hit the guy in the crotch accidently... Though usually it's like you said, he either dies or nothing happens...

Does anyone know which INI or CFG file you can alter to lengthen decal life?

I want to make bullet holes on bodies and windshields last longer. At the moment they only last a few seconds which really sucks.

If I'm not mistaken there are two commands.. not sure which one or both matters...
gfx_maxdecalcountpertype
gfx_maxdecalcount

I think those are the commands.. enter ? in the console, they are listed there.

edit oops I didn't think I was correct.. :p Yah I checked.. just makes marks with the knife on boxes stay longer.. I wish I could alter body decals.. oh well, a FOV hack AND that would be asking too much in one day. ;)

Cool, thanks man, I'll check that out.

Does anyone know how to get the weapons store guy to come back? I have been doing weapon missions but now he no longer appears at weapon shops. I do not have any active missions, so it's not that. Do I need to progress the storyline by doing some main missions before he comes back?

EDIT: The console commands gfx_MaxDecalCount and gfx_MaxDecalCountPerType only controls how many decals can display, it doesnt alter the length of time they are visible for. Environmental decals stay a lot longer than body damage decals. If anyone knows how to make body damage stay longer, please let us know!

Whilst the game looks superb and runs very nicely on my set-up, I have to say the game is Dull with a capital D.

The worst aspect has to be the constant travelling around in vehicles. Going past respawned enemies each time infuriates me. I've already lost the will to carry on, I simply cannot face another long trek to get some decent gunfights. Tedious and monotonous.

The voice acting is appalling too, I wish I could turn it off. It actually makes Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond sound good!

I have to agree with the majority of the critic's reviews, the game simple fails to deliver its potential. Through fatal flaws in the game design. Shame, I really wanted to like this game but I simply cannot.

Back to Brother's in Arms - HH.... loads more fun.

OH crap i thought Farcry 2 was a Jungle Drivin simulator with a little Gunplay thrown in at the end, Now this explains it all!

Radiator repair simulator.

or take the bus.. I'm 50% thru.. half the buddy missions done as well as 15 side missions.. Almost every objective can be reached a short distance from a bus stop... The further ones I've found I can travel off road and skip most if not all soldier points. Plan out your route, and you'd be surprised how accessible going off road can be.

I've managed to do it fairly regularly with the Machete of all things. If the enemies aren't immediately alerted of your presence.

Sneak up and knife em when they break off from their buddies and then slink off to cover and wait.

Keep an eye on the other enemies as you hide and eventually the guy's moaning will get someone to help him.

I usually just knife em, and leave an IED next to the body then slink around to another part of the area while keeping an eye on the patrols. Right when they shoulder their injured buddy, BOOM!

Wow nice, I have the worse luck with the machete. Every time I sneak up on someone to knife them, it always alerts everyone, even if I'm behind a solid wall hundreds of feet away.

anybody else find the hang glider yet? fun stuff. also i had a pretty cool healing animation. he lit a bunch of stick matches at once, blew them out, and stuck them in the bullet hole to cauterize the wound. i'm really liking this game so far.

Anybody want to slap the OP with a sea bass? I am regretting this purchase; it is not AWESOME. Oh well, no hard feelings. :)

Add me to the list of wishing I hadn't purchased. Ubisoft just slap the Far Cry name on a turd.

Been playing and overall am unimpressed. So many annoying little things ruin the otherwise great idea for a game here. Reminds me of Assassins Creed where the world is well done and looks good, but the game itself isnt fun to play.
