So I was just searching around Gamespot.com and stumbled upon this game. The critic reviews are ok at best, but the user reviews are through the roof! Is this really worth picking up?

It's good at what it does. Have you ever played a game that lets you ride around on a horse and stab people with lance before? If you want to try M&B. The graphics are not anything wonderful but the combat system is pretty good.

From what I read, very open ended RPG.

Little to no story line, pretty much do what you want. Although focus is on Cavalry combat.

I've not played it, its going to need some sort of hook for me to actually try it.

The final version was actually 'leaked' a few days ago. Just search for Mount and Blade Press release and you should find it. Note that you still need to buy a key if you want to play further then level 8 however it should give you a good taste if the game is your style.

I've really had lots of fun playing it the past 3 years since I've played it since early beta build days.

This game really caught me by suprise! I just found the main website. The graphics do look dated, but the gameply looks exceptional. I'm going to DL the beta this evening.

Thanks!

Really nice find. Great reviews too! I'm gonna get it as soon as I get home. Thanks OP.

I played a version of this at some point. It's really entertaining at first, but it gets repetitive and dies out quickly.

Definitely worth a look though.

Well I downloaded the game last evening and gave the trial a shot. The graphics are certainly dated, but the game play is awesome! For some reason I couldn't save, but this could be a trial issue.

Going to log a bit more time tonight before I decide on a purchase, but as of now I think I'll be picking up sooner rather than later.

Yeah I bought it a while back and I've enjoyed the hell out of it! I've probably conquered half of the world and done hundreds of sieges, attacking and defending. Several thousand troops under my control throughout the world, although I can't have more than around 70 with me at one time. Been a while since I played so I don't remember what level I am or how I placed my skills.

Version 1.001 will be out tomorrow at the official website www.taleworlds.com I would highly reccomend checking it out as I'm definitely going to do that when I get the chance.

Its really like an actual RPG, except in computer form. Like those old pen and paper role-playing games, except on the computer. Graphics are horrible and some of the physics are atrocious, but there is sort of a comforting quality about the game. It reminds me of those long-lost text adventures, except this one has a graphical overlay to help tell the story.

I really dig it. I'm looking forward to seeing how things progress.

UPDATE:

After playing some more, I have a few more comments. The game has EXCELLENT direction, but it is defininately unpolished. It feels as if some amateurs sitting around a table playing a pen & paper RPG said, "Gee, wouldn't it be nice to put this stuff on the computer?"

"They already have that. Its called a MUD. Remember those?"
"Yes, but I'm talking about something with graphics. So I can see my character walk around, watch him swing his swords and things."
"OH! You mean World of Warcraft?"
"No, Something I can play without having to pay for it every month. Something single-player."
"I see. Yeah, that would be cool."
"Wanna do it?"
"What? Make a video game? I guess we could. We already have the storylines from our RPG campaigns."
"Sure. Let's do it."
"Ok."

Anybody playing the game can probably picture that little dialog that may have taken place before the game was developed. Its very amatuer~ish. Its got some repeatable elements (ie: Quest to deliver a letter. Quest to collect a debt. Quest to find and out a murderer.) And the utter lack of voice-overs proves that it is very low-budget. The music is very fitting, the sound effects are fairly decent, and the concept is very nice. The map layout is kind of nice, and I like watching the little dude riding his horse and being able to zoom way out to where he's just a spec. But, its kind of a unique way to do travel. Unique, although not ground breaking. Its nice, but it seems like more of a "simple answer" approach. It works though.

In fact, MOST of the game seems to come from the concept of "simple answer" to lay out the whole game. Its basic RPG stuffs: stats that can be increased, you can add members to your party, you can buy weapons and armor from the villages you encounter, and beware of the raiding parties you might come across in your travels.

But, that simple approach makes the game so familiar. It would be nice to see what these guys could do with a real budget. Flesh the phsyics engine out a bit more (any kind of jump or fall shows your guy in vertical stance, feet together, arms together, floating to the ground) and you've got a real game. Kick up the special effects and add some voice-over dialog to add to the immersive feel, and you've got a real game. And, oh by the way, bring the graphics up to this generation if you can. The graphics aren't bad, just very dated. That's the least of the problems, though.

Its a good game, and it has some great elements, it just needs a lot more to turn it into a real seller.

The main developer said he really couldn't do more with this engine so he just fixed everything he could up for 1.001 and is going to release it today. I'm assuming you where playing .960 since it's the latest release that you can download so far.

He said he wants to develope a Mount and Blade 2 and thinks that Mount and Blade should do well enough to do so. Now how big or good the team is only he can decide but this game was primarlily developed by 2 people with a few other peoples help in a few situations.

I already bought a key but if he realeases a Mount and Blade 2 beta that I can buy into in the next few years I definitely am going to be one of the first ones in it.

@ MelloJoe - Thanks for the splendid overview!

I'm so getting this when 1.0 is released! I played to level 8 this morning and loved every aspect of it. Game play is key here over graphics. I'm seriously very impressed with this find.

Yeah, I got a little impatient and dowloaded the .960 version instead of waiting for today to download v 1.00. However, I'm not sold on my current character, so I'll probably delete and install the new version.

Downloaded 1.03 a few days ago. This has to be one of the best sleeper game picks of the last few years.

I'm amazed at how dedicated the community is. There are and endless stream of mods. I've also stumbled upon a major graphical enchantment mod as well as an HDR mod. The game can look very good with these. Game play is still the secret to this game.

I had my first successful siege yesterday and it was a pretty intense battle. Being able to command and fight along side your troops is priceless!

Get this game! :D

I decided to give it a try, its d/l but just got home last night and haven't had a chance to play it.

I'm not sure what it is, but the game feels very directionless, even moreso than other open-ended RPGs, and not in a good way. It feels as if there's too much "game", and I'm having a really difficult time getting into it. Any RPG like this is going to be something of a chore at first, but this one is just...hard to describe.

It is interesting though. It reminds me a lot of Operation Flashpoint, just in the way that things move and feel. The edges are rough, but I think there's a good game here (I just need to find it).

Get reputation, become a vassel. Take over Calderia (Mount and Blades gameworld), thats what I'm on a mission to do. You really need to just set your own missions in this game since thier is a lot of stuff to do. Fighting at arena tournaments is a great way to make money.

Also watch for mods on this in a few months Judging by the amount of mods for older versions we are going to have plenty of things to try out.

Also you haven't played Mount and Blade until you've got the battlesizer and participated in a 300 man battle... that is chatoic but tons of fun.

Just a few things to keep in mind from a player who has been playing it since version .632 in 2005.

At first I was a bit overwhelmed as to what the heck to do too! After I took some time to explore, read up on the forums and engage in a few light battles I was hooked. I can defiantly understand what you're saying, but if you give it a bit more time you'll see how addictive it can be. The way you can play the game has many many variable as well.

I'm most eager for the Graphical Enhancement Mod 3.0. If you look through the link sculelos posted you'll see some wicked screen shots. Just a warning, but the HDR mod is still kind of buggy. And there doesn't seem to be just one person working on it, more of a collection of people's experiences with it. It does make everything look even better, but still needs work.

I can't wait to install the battlesizer mod!!! I've got my first castle with about a 100 man garrison and a 600 man Vaeger army just a few paces away! Not sure if I can survive it, but at least it'll be fun!

Is this game first or third person? Both? I can't find a clear answer. The reason that I ask is that I don't really like third person shooter games.

Both. You can switch to whatever you like to fight in more, I prefer third person.

My brother-in-law has been playing it a ton lately. He loves it. His enthusiasm is rubbing off on me and I want to play it more, too. He just said something about how he was granted his own land and he's looking forward to building a castle on it. He has a band of like 50 men and they've faced and defeated armies of 100 to 115 men before. One battle he lost 1 man and his opponent lost 47 before they surrendered. :)

Graphics aren't great. But, from what I've seen from my play and from his play, there is a TON of depth to this game and LOTS of playability here. This is a solid game that anyone can play, to start with, for free. Once you get hooked, I'm sure you'll spend the $$ to buy the full retail version.

This game looks pretty cool. I did try out 0.960 for a bit, but only for like 20 minutes, ran through the tutorial and tried running to a new city but didn't get past that. Now that 1.003 is out I'll give it another try...

One of those games that if you get into it... you are INTO it :p

Played the trial to level 8, pretty cool game I think... I really like the idea of not having a fixed storyline, but instead making up your one basically! Join whoever you want, whenever you want, fight whoever, whenever.... VERY open ended, and I think they made it like that so that you can basically choose to make up whatever story you want.

Now I have to decide if I should just buy this game or wait a while until it's more polished and I've played all the other games I've already paid for :p

Yeah. I got the feeling this might be one of those "cult hits" games. I will certainly try the "demo" or whatever it is.

Downloaded it last night at about 10:00pm. Next thing I knew it was 3:00am....

Yep, good game! I love the combat, feel much more "real" than a lot of recent RPG's. A few little gripes here and there, but I will be buying this. I actually like it more than Oblivion.

Don't remember how I stumbled upon this gem, Mount & Blade, but I went to my local GameStop and grabbed it for $30, (I know you can download the full game then unlock it, but I like to have the box, manual, and stuff). Everything about it is just a bargain, $30 game, ~380mb, and unique gameplay. I was a little worried at first when coming across mixed reviews, but this game hit a home run. Perfect for a mobile gamer.

Anyone see mods yet for 1.003 or perhaps 1.0? The game ships as 1.0 if anyone's curious.

I haven't checked on it for a while, but apparently they are still waiting for the actual "module" system to be released for 1.0+, but as soon as that is released then the mods should spew forth. Apparently there have been some pretty epic ones in the past.

Yeah I thought I caught glimpses of a Rome mod.. wow that would kick so much ass.

The graphics enhancement mod with HDR running does really improve the graphics quality with the game. I'll try to get some screenshots up later.

As with the mods yes they got some excelent ones but most of them are for .903. Without the new module developement system nothing major can be produced. However I'm quite sure Armagan (Main developer) is working on fixing bugs and when he's satisfied that it's done he will release a mod kit.

I'm sure the mods will be amazing in a year or two though.

My Brother-in-Law is still playing it. I can't believe how much he plays it, really. For the minimal investment, it seems to have hours upon hours of playability.

I liked the graphical enhancement mod, but I tried the HDR mod and HATED it! Mostly because it didn't seem to work very well. Or maybe too well? It made the middle of my menu screen VERY bright. The game looked a little better I maybe, but I was annoyed by it and haven't used it since.

I've been playing the demo of this (through steam). I like the sword swinging and blocking, it reminds me of Rune, but the game is a little rough. Are there any other games with this complex hack and slash gameplay?

The swordplay is good, but what's really great about the game is the mounted combat. Give that a try before you give up on it ;)
