Mount & Blade?

i'm getting better at mounted combat (timing/aiming the swings, and lancing) and enjoying the trial game (I keep starting over). Too bad I missed the 50% off sale from Steam. If theres nothing else comparable, I'll probably just buy it since I've already gotten a good chunk of time out of it.

Yeah, on this scale and openess for battles w/troops there really isn't anything else that compares to it.

For straight up melee action without any troops/open world, etc then I'd suggest Severance if you never played it. Since you liked Rune you will probably love severance. IMO both were great games but Severance's combat was better, felt a lot more natural and it actually makes blocking/dodging a cornerstone and important part of combat.

Played the demo yesterday. And while I can certainly see the potential in the combat and RPG concepts of the game, overall it just feels too unfinished to justify the $30 price.

I agree that $30 is too much. It has its fair share of flaws, including dated graphics, rough animations, low use of actual tactics during battle (especially during sieges where there's only one path), foot battles feel clunky, and a poor soundtrack. Despite all of this, the game is still fun. It does take a couple hours to get into as the beginning is slow due to avoiding most enemies other than looters.

My brother-in-law is STILL playing it. He's got a couple of castles now. He's the king's advisor. he's eliminating entire societies, completely eliminating them.

He's been playing it since this thread was started, what 4 months ago? Not bad for $30. Even better at $15.

I find The Witcher to be more engaging, but for another look at an RPG, Mount & Blade seems like a nice one to play.

yeah, i've been meaning to get the witcher. Maybe it'll make me forget about M&B long enough...

after reading this thread I downloaded the game yesterday and played 4 or 5 different characters to level 7. This is one of the coolest games I've played in my life. Sure its got problems but the first time I charged into a group on my horse and killed bad guys to the left and right, I was hooked. Cant wait to get a key and start to get into the sieges.

There are quick action options in the demo, try the siege attack and siege defense. The defense is pretty difficult for me, I think I've only beaten it once and that was because I jumped off the wall (only 1 pt of damage...) and was able to get in close for good crossbow shots before they breached the keep.

I started playing this game on and off 3+ years ago. It's pretty good. No story so its more like a strategy game with some RPG elements thrown in. The battles can be lots of fun. The AI has improved over the different versions.

What makes this game really special is the mod community. There are some great mods out and great mods in the works. I haven't played many indie games but this one is the best I have seen.

When i bought this game last week on steam, i played the game for 2 hours and was dissapointed badly by it. This thread gave the game a second chance.

First , i installed some mod to make the game look better.
Colorful texture mod http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,41739.0.html
Panoramic mod http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,53634.0.html
Calradia Map Makeover http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,42814.0.html

then i played it and understood how the game worked and now i have to say im happy with my purchase!

Now i need to level a little bit more... any tips on that?

Kill sea-raiders for XP and for equipment. I usually try to gather myself + 8 heroes that get along and level with those. I add only as few extra troops as necessary to get through battles. Get the surgeon hero as fast as you can as well. You won't even have to run after the enemy parties this way, they will come to you.

i ended up buying it, i'm just getting used to getting a good army together as opposed to doing everything myself. I only have 2 characters developed since I started the full version, but I have a lot of time into it and think its worth the $30 i paid on steam.

I can't get to the site due to work, but I'm curious. Is this more of a survival type rpg or GTA with horses and swords?

Just a heads up, for those that are thinking about trying it, it's going to be on sale on Steam this weekend for $7.50, so there's really no better time. I checked the Steam site and it looks like the sale has already started.

Hmmm never seen the Panoramic mod before... looks awesome, I've been looking for something like it, so thanks for posting it. Also the Map makeover looks great, trying it after this post!

I've been playing this game for like 3 years now, since I started playing it early in the beta stages and since then they added a ton to it. 7.50$ for this game on steam is a steal so I urge anyone who is even remotely interested to grab it. The game has so many good Mods already and tons more are in development.

Is there any way to have this game utilize more than one core? I'm tired of having only 52% of my CPU being used and it is causing a bottleneck.

Shit. I finally get around to checking out the demo and you can no longer buy it on Steam for $7.50. Apparently they ran out of keys. :(

Huh? It's still being advertised... and I could add it to my cart...

yea that scared me last night when i was gonna buy it and i couldn't add it to my cart. so when i saw it back on steam i bought it asap

should I bother picking this game up if I don't have much time to play games/never spend more than an hour or so playing a game? At 7.50 it couldn't hurt but I'm a jobless college student living off my savings so I count my dimes and nickles haha.

Try the demo. It is the full version but limits you to level up to level 7. The fun really starts when you hit the teens in levels, though.

Hard to pass up for $7.50....haven't had a chance to play it but looking forward to giving it a shot.

I picked it up off steam this weekend also. Tried the demo before but hadn't really liked it at the time. BUT after playing it awhile, it's getting to be fun.
Joined a tournament and won it. (After betting on myself alot...lol)
Once i figured out that you can get teammates and upgrade them it made the the game a whole lot more interesting. Only thing i haven't really figured out what to do yet is disposing of the prisoners i get. Not sure if there is any place i can dump them yet so if any know the info would be greatly appreciated.
As for the game, it's unpolished but it's pretty deep and fun once you get into it. I recommend it, especially if you can get it for $7.50 on steam...:p

You can sell prisoners to Ransom Brokers found in taverns. There won't be one in every tavern but they move on a weekly basis I think. Prisoners only get you 50 denars each so not really worth the trouble. You can also store prisoners in your castles or try to recruit them when making camp.

theres a slave trader in one or two of the Nord cities as well, in Tihr maybe? of course it goes on sale after I paid $30 for it...

One use for prisoners is recruiting a large amount and then going to castles with em and wreaking havoc. I once got around 100 sea raiders and went on a castle rampage. I attacked the Viegers and although I lost I took about 300 of them out before being captured.

Thanks all for the info. Will check when i get home from work. 50 a prisoner isn't much but it will pay the party upkeep bills a week. :p
Would love to see some more in-depth interaction tho from what i've seen and read about.
Would be interesting to romance an NPC, have the NPC's mate challenge you to a duel or declare war on you or revenge. Stuff like that plus others would spice it up immensely imho. Maybe even take a page from medieval war 2 and allow bloodlines in the game. Something for the modders to study i think.
That said, i love playing in the tournaments. Once i unhorse the opposing players they are mine! hehe

Hells yeah. I was thinking the other day how much fun M&B would be with some multiplayer. I'm glad I picked it up for $7.50 last week.

An expansion will be coming out later this year, I think. So far, it is said to have multiplayer and, judging by the images, the graphics have been updated a bit. More information concerning multiplayer: http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,56145.0.html

Good news, I'll be sure to pick it up when it launches, I've gotten pretty good with this game in single player so being able to fight real people would be a nice change of pace.
