So I was just searching around Gamespot.com and stumbled upon this game. The critic reviews are ok at best, but the user reviews are through the roof! Is this really worth picking up?

UPDATE:
After playing some more, I have a few more comments. The game has EXCELLENT direction, but it is defininately unpolished. It feels as if some amateurs sitting around a table playing a pen & paper RPG said, "Gee, wouldn't it be nice to put this stuff on the computer?"
"They already have that. Its called a MUD. Remember those?"
"Yes, but I'm talking about something with graphics. So I can see my character walk around, watch him swing his swords and things."
"OH! You mean World of Warcraft?"
"No, Something I can play without having to pay for it every month. Something single-player."
"I see. Yeah, that would be cool."
"Wanna do it?"
"What? Make a video game? I guess we could. We already have the storylines from our RPG campaigns."
"Sure. Let's do it."
"Ok."
Anybody playing the game can probably picture that little dialog that may have taken place before the game was developed. Its very amatuer~ish. Its got some repeatable elements (ie: Quest to deliver a letter. Quest to collect a debt. Quest to find and out a murderer.) And the utter lack of voice-overs proves that it is very low-budget. The music is very fitting, the sound effects are fairly decent, and the concept is very nice. The map layout is kind of nice, and I like watching the little dude riding his horse and being able to zoom way out to where he's just a spec. But, its kind of a unique way to do travel. Unique, although not ground breaking. Its nice, but it seems like more of a "simple answer" approach. It works though.
In fact, MOST of the game seems to come from the concept of "simple answer" to lay out the whole game. Its basic RPG stuffs: stats that can be increased, you can add members to your party, you can buy weapons and armor from the villages you encounter, and beware of the raiding parties you might come across in your travels.
But, that simple approach makes the game so familiar. It would be nice to see what these guys could do with a real budget. Flesh the phsyics engine out a bit more (any kind of jump or fall shows your guy in vertical stance, feet together, arms together, floating to the ground) and you've got a real game. Kick up the special effects and add some voice-over dialog to add to the immersive feel, and you've got a real game. And, oh by the way, bring the graphics up to this generation if you can. The graphics aren't bad, just very dated. That's the least of the problems, though.
Its a good game, and it has some great elements, it just needs a lot more to turn it into a real seller.
I'm not sure what it is, but the game feels very directionless, even moreso than other open-ended RPGs, and not in a good way. It feels as if there's too much "game", and I'm having a really difficult time getting into it. Any RPG like this is going to be something of a chore at first, but this one is just...hard to describe.
It is interesting though. It reminds me a lot of Operation Flashpoint, just in the way that things move and feel. The edges are rough, but I think there's a good game here (I just need to find it).
Downloaded 1.03 a few days ago. This has to be one of the best sleep game picks of the last few years.
I'm amazed at how dedicate the community is. There are and endless stream of mods. I've also stumbled upon a major graphical enchantment mod as well as an HDR mod. The game can look very good with these. Game play is steal they secret to this game.
I had my first successful siege yesterday and it was a pretty intense battle. Being able to command and fight along side your troops is priceless!

Here are all finished mods. However note that none of these a compatible with 1.003, so if you want to try any of them out your going to need to download older Mount & Blade versions.

Is this game first or third person? Both? I can't find a clear answer. The reason that I ask is that I don't really like third person shooter games.
I haven't checked on it for a while, but apparently they are still waiting for the actual "module" system to be released for 1.0+, but as soon as that is released then the mods should spew forth. Apparently there have been some pretty epic ones in the past.
