Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection

However I am amazed the author of the article said the first 3 games were mortal kombat 1, mortal kombat 2, and ultimate mortal kombat 3. what about mortal kombat 3?

no need, Ultimate MK3 is better. What about MK4 or Trilogy? I would like to see trilogy released

UMK3 was essentially MK3 with some extra characters. I'm sure there were other changes under the bonnet but no need to get vanilla 3 if you can have ultimate!!

MK3 wasn't very good at all. The only people who liked it where subzero die hards as it's the only one he was good (but still not great) in, but since Kabal/Kung Lao killed everyone.... Outside of that it was kinda bleh. UMK3 on the other hand was pretty amazing and some of the characters brought in were strong enough that it wasn't just Kabal and Kung Lao rape. Ermac, Smoke and Reptile to be specific.

There is no reason to play MK3 unless you want to play an oldschool MK game in which subzero is worth using... but even then that's only the case provided nobody picks either of the K cheese masters.

everyone who responded to me, my point was, that the first three mortal kombats do not include ultimate. that is all i was pointing out lol. still can't wait for this to be released on steam

AWESOME...for $10, I can almost guarantee I'll pick that up. Been forever since I played some.

This will prompt me to dust off the ps3 that has been sitting on the shelf for a few months now. Haven't touched it since I built my gaming computer.

You can get it on Steam too for the PC platform;)

This game was never cheesy to me. Blocking and counter-attacks were always critical when I played. Tit for tat.

This is a sweet deal for $10, can't wait. MK2 with my arcade stick on my projector will be amazing!

I remember MK3 on the PC and having enough ram to preload fighter data.......

Eh, at mid high level the game completely falls apart as some of the characters just bulldoze the rest of the cast. You can't counter shit when people have attacks that are safe to unpunishable on a good portion of the cast and your damage output from one single combo is well over 50% of their life.

It boils down like this "I can do 50% damage on you off any counter attack, any move you make, or any opening I get. You can do 1% damage to me off any counter and 20-30% off any opening you get. Plus my characters moves beat yours out".

MK1 was hilarious in this aspect. All of the cast could do 100% damage in a single combo in the corner, but Kano, Raiden, and Cage all had a glitch in their jump where they could do 100% damage in a combo from anywhere on the screen among other tricks. How well do you think that worked out?

And oddly enough, that game was the most balanced and least BS prone of all the originals. It just got more absurd from there.

Love it. It's exactly what I was expecting and it fills up the most of the widescreen without bars on the top and bottom. I haven't tried the online but I'm not expecting much. I bought it for the singleplayer and LAN gameplay. I really wish they would have included the real MK3 for it but it's okay, I'm happy with this. I'm really liking what Midway/Netherrealm Studios is doing. Glad to have Ed Boon doing something for the fans.

You should play it on console anyways. Larger community for fighting games and by far more skilled. Almost nobody plays fighters on PC and everybody who does sucks.

They seriously need to have cross platform so you can just eat your words. I spend X on my PC and I'm not about to spend X on a console. I do not want to get into this PC versus Console debate, this was the only place there was a discussion on the Arcade Kollection so rather then creating a new one I thought I'd just join in.

Wow, I wasn't ready for the difficulty level of these games. MK2 is insanely hard, even on the easiest setting. MK1 was more like I remembered and I haven't tried UMK3 yet. But man, MK2 had me ready to smash something after 3 characters in.

I vaguely remember being a kid in the arcades, there was a trick on how to beat every fighter in MK2 up until you reached Kintaro.

Wait until the computer is at sweep level or a bit more then jump backwards and throw out a low kick. After you land, the computer will follow by jumping towards you and then you can punish the AI any way you like. I used this with Shang Tsung. Might seem boring but it was fun during my childhood to try flip the game that way.

I got my money's worth out of a quarter at every MK2 cabinet I played.

Oh you don't want to play UMK3 then. Once you play Jade you'll want to smash the controller onto the floor, or quit the game lol. Mk2 can be tough but it's all about recognizing the computer's cheap patterns. I find UMK3 the hardest, then MK1 and MK2 the easiest. Now playing human opponents is another matter, though I don't play online because of awful lag issues.

No PC love until next month, at times like this I'm sad I don't have a PS3.

EDIT: PC place holder up in the Games for Windows LIVE section:

Fuck this...I want MK9 on the PC!

Kitana/Mileena on MK2, Jade on UMK3 = cheap ass mother fuckers. Then you get to Shao Khan and he's the ultimate cheese. I played thru the arcade version of umk3 a few weeks ago with a friend......took about an hour to beat Shao Khan..serious cheese. Tip for anyone (if it's the same AI), wait until you get chance to uppercut him.....then when he's down run upto him and uppercut again don't attempt any combos on him. Rinse and repeat till defeated.

I've played MK1, MK2, and MK3 on Sega Genesis, and I do find MK2 to be the most difficult of the 3.

Haven't played UMK3 though, which I'm really looking forward to once MKAK hits PC platform. Shame they delayed it.

IT's not a debate about hardware at all. But the vast majority of the fighting game community is on consoles. Furthermore all competitive players are on consoles and the default competitive platform is the PS3. I've seen the type of trash that plays online and it's not that good, but the PC takes the cake for lack of skill, no talent ass clowns, and just people who shouldn't be playing fighters at all.

Nobody worth spit is on the PC and that's how it's been and that's not going to change. The only times this wasn't true was when there was an old ass game that you had to run off MAME, but as soon as it moves to console everybody ditches the PC as fast as they can and moves to a proper platform for fighters.

If you want to play fighting games you should go where the community actually is.

Wasn't the AI in Ultimate MK3 pretty much impossible to beat if you didn't have a teleport?
Granted I haven't played the game in a long time, but I remember the AI starting combos from a crazy distance away, throwing you when you blocked for a milisecond, and jumping the instant you pressed a button to throw a projectile. The only way to win was to abuse teleports, which they didn't seem to account for.

No you didn't need a tele. But the AI was just really vicious in general and cheap as hell. It was built to try and counter whatever you did, you had to goose the AI though gaps in it.

MK suffers from arcade syndrome, in that that more quarters you poured into it the better. So it really tried to guzzle them fast.

Nope, done it with Sub Zero a few times. Some of the AI is the most frustrating you'll ever find in a fighter tho....Jade's flashing green 'thing' that pretty much goes thru everything you can do followed up by an insane combo rinsed and repeated is one of video games most annoying instances.

That's nothing compared to SNK games, "SNK boss syndrome" was coined for a reason, SNK was just the worst about that shit.

And you've just hit on about the only good thing about Jade, that's ALL she does. Don't give her a chance to do it and you're fine.

View all AI in fighters as this, it's dumb as a rock, but it has flaweless execution on reaction.

Jade only catches noobs and low level players with that. First tip, NEVER EVER EVER FIRE A PROJECTILE OUTSIDE OF A COMBO, AS AN ANTI AIR, OR UNLESS YOU WANT TO FORCE THE PERSON TO BLOCK OR JUMP, IF YOU DO THIS SORT OF THING QUIT PLAYING FIGHTERS NOW.

The problem is noobs and low level players Sub and Scorp it up and half their strat is "I hit them with projectile then win" that is low level crap play, stop doing it. Because if you do that, a good portion of the cast can either go through it, or teleport behind your ass and make your world suck. So if you just tossed it out there and she went through it, congrats, a mid level or better player would make it hurt just as much.

Save that shit, for when they have to block (this is rare) to trade through a projectile (you come out ahead or they have to jump) or against a jump, or off a landed hit. Bravo, now you can't get combo'd to hell and back for doing silly things, and said freeze is 100% sure, you get the knock down and thus the mix up. Idealy any freeze should end with a combo that finishes with a slide to put them in the corner, which is the only place sub zero goes from "totally sucks" to "pretty good actually" and even then it's debatable (he's not that good in UMK3 by any stretch of the imagination).

The thing is, the computer is stupid and only fully counters blatantly stupid shit with a few characters and a few moves. In the noob classic match (Scorp vs Sub which is what noobs go for in general) subs freeze is fully counter'd by a tele. But since those characters attract the fools you don't see that often outside of higher level players.

You should never be tossing a freeze unless you have a clear goal for it. IE "he jumped I can now freeze and he can't do shit" or "I hit him with an AA HP, I can now freeze" or "he fired a fireball/spear I can trade and get more damage than him out of this" or "I'm in a combo it's 100% going to hit" or "he's commited to a move and will have to block this and stall out or risk a 50/50 on the freeze or counter" outside of those, don't throw the damn freeze ever.

The CPU Jade will just (minorly compared to a quasi good player) point out where you're firing off dumb shit, because she only counters the truly dumb shit, a remotely good player will make you pay for more.

Really, the first step to above noob status in fighters is realizing that you shouldn't just toss out projectiles that aren't 100% or don't force them to react in a way that get's you something out of it. The only other acceptable use is as a mental check where you are willing to eat 40%+ damage just to check them that you might do something stupid, but that's at really high level play and you're counting on them having a brain fart while they figure out why did something so idiotic, and it rarely if ever works, so don't bother with it.

Thanks for the advice but I'm really not that heavy into it! I play with friends mainly and no-one is amazing and no-one takes it mega serious.

In UMK3 I use Sub-Zero for on-line play. I'm high ranking and will show you how powerful he can be if used properly.

Used properly doesn't mean much, he's still not high tier or that good at all. So it's a stupid stance to take. Tier lists are just where the characters are ranked as to how good they are. Subzero is one of the easiest and most brain dead characters out there to pick, but he's limited, and he's not top tier or that good.

Here is the tier list

Kabal - 155
Human Smoke - 145
Ermac - 135
Kung Lao - 134
Nightwolf - 132
Kano - 128
Reptile - 127
Robot Smoke - 126
Kitana - 126
Sonya - 114
Jax - 113
Sindel - 111
Unmasked Sub-zero - 108
Scorpion - 107
Stryker - 100
Jade - 93
Liu Kang - 91
Sektor - 88
Mileena - 87
Classic Sub-zero - 80
Cyrax - 77
Sheeva - 77
Shang Tsung - 76

The only game he was ever reasonably good in was vanilla MK3. And honestly, you're not going to see good players using anybody below Reptile unless they are goofing around. Winning with low tier characters smacks more of playing people who don't know what the hell they are doing than anything. Beating up fools doesn't make the character good, which is all Sub is good for in MK3, taking out idiots and people that aren't all that great.

Subzero gets raped by anybody with a teleport in general. Ermac and Smoke are hilariously good at this with 80%+ damage combos off teleports and anti-airs that do not require a corner and often 100% combos that do not require a corner. Subzero requires a corner to get that sort of damage and can only 100% robots mid screen due to a glitch. His special moves, outside of unmaskeds clone, are also no where near as good as most of the cast against an opponent who isn't high or a asleep.

Only way to beat a good person in the arcade with subzero? Step on his foot as hard as you can and hope you can take him out before the guy realizes what's going on.

"Powerful" eh.... a character with worse special and normal moves than half the cast, is unable to do 80% or greater combos from the mid screen unless he's playing against a robot, and does not have a counter to all situations..... hence why he isn't even close to the top tier.

For more fun, here are some other tier lists for the games in the kollection

Mileena
Jax
Liu Kang
Kitana
Kung Lao *
Scorpion
Shang Tsung
Cage
Raiden
Sub-Zero
Baraka
Reptile *

That's still pretty accurate for any arcade port, and sub, yet again, is suck tier. The * is because even where they are, they face rape some at the top. IE Reptile has a horribad match vs Scorp, it's bullshit and there isn't much he can do short of roll over and die, and scorp isn't even that impressive, but he eats millena alive. Kung Lao, well (tiers are done out of 9 games on actual odds all things perfect) takes crappy characters like sub (and yes, he is dog shit) something like 7-3 rather than 8-2 or 9-1 rape that other tops do. However he's better against the top. Namely, he creates more situations to do damage, but doesn't have a "haha you threw a projectile/pressed a button you lose 80% of your life combo"

MK1's is even funnier.

Cage
Raiden
Kano
Kang
Sonya
Scorpion
Subzero

The top 3 have a glitch where they can hop kick anybody to death and 100% combo from anywhere on the screen. Kang comes quasi close, and Sonya has a few qualities. Scorp and Sub are absolute shit tier. Sub being the worst of the 2,

Tiers are funny, the better you are at the game the more they matter, the worse you are the less they do. The top characters often take more skill to get the most out of then the lower ones.

I like Subzero as a character design, but as an actual pick.... he's from joke to picking him as an insult when playing good people. It's a bit of a shame.
