Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection

Kabal makes me laugh. Block and combo. So vulnerable.

Tiers can go fuck themselves. It's about technique, tactics, and mind games.

I'm FAR from an MK expert, but the tiers tend to really only relate to people playing at the highest level.
Fei Long and Crimson Viper are usually pretty high up the Street Fighter tier list but online you'd never know it. Both are just difficult to execute with, but are godlike if you can.
More than likely if the tiers seem wonky there's some kind of exploit you likely don't know about. Either that or it's really hard to do, but still possible in the right hands.
Anyone can always beat anyone, but you're going to have a much tougher time with a lower tier character than an upper tier character in most matches. Sometimes it even boils down to certain styles completely killing certain characters, too.

The tier system just kills the fun for me. I play video games to have fun, I choose a character to play as because I like their style etc, not because they are in top tier. If they are classed as low tier so what? Not like the game is gonna be any less fun is it? It's the same as ppl who get obsessed with kdr's on fps games.

Keep that to the ppl that have a hard on for competitions.

I pretty clearly don't care about tiers either...considering I immediately gravitate toward the almost always low tier grapplers in every game. I pretty much know I'm in for an uphill battle, but I never really care.
That said, I'm usually intrigued by the tier systems in most fighting games. In a lot of cases the characters you'd think would be the worst end up being rather strong due to small details that most people overlook. Hell, sometimes those things don't matter online anyway.
Frametraps and the like are pretty tough to execute in person and are impossible online, so they don't matter.
Plus, like I always stress with SD, top tier people aren't common opponents. I've run into Alex Valle and a few random wizards playing Tekken, but in SF I can probably count the EVO-level players I've encountered as maybe 100 or less...and that's out of about 10,000 matches. I couldn't care less if T. Hawk stands no chance of beating them as long as I can hang with the other random people floating around.

Kabal makes me laugh. Block and combo. So vulnerable.

Kabal was the strongest in MK3 and is by far the strongest in UMK3. He doesn't actually have any vulnerabilities at a high level. You're not going to see much other than AIBs tossed out and the odd ground attack outside of a combo. A quality Kabal will rape any other character in the game.

Tiers do matter. No game is balanced. Unless all the characters are exactly the same there are going to be differences. Tiers reflect that. What tiers represent as the absolute maximum potential of a character with top or close to top players. Keep that in mind.

So tiers mean a lot, some characters are not as good as the others.

If they are classed as low tier so what? Not like the game is gonna be any less fun is it?

Oh yes it is. The local group around here that plays games includes Ryry (who is a top player) Ganelion (also top and flys out to Japan for events) Noel Brown (also top) and a slew of other big names that hit up the Wed and Saturday regulars, along with some oddball (yet still very good) that show up randomly such as NinjaCW. Most of the people that aren't famous for tournaments wins are pretty damn nasty as well and routinely take rounds, matches, and even sets from the best players. I play people like that constantly, there are weekly events, monthly events, and there are gatherings constantly at whoevers house and everybody shows up to play.

Picking crap characters that have bad match-ups against someone is just silly. That sort of stuff only happens when people are fairly plastered. Because you pick a crappy character, since these people are good, you're going to get utterly destroyed quickly.

No amount of tactics is going to bail out your Morgan, Felicia, BB Hood theme'd team in MVC2, you're going to get spanked like a fool and bodied so fast. You might get some chuckles as you get thrashed about the screen.

Of course, there is a difference between placing a shit tier character against a god tier, and stacking up a mid high against a high tier. You might have a good character match-up there and it might be a perfect counter pick.

But in the case of the earlier MKs (9's tier system is still being worked out and they are patching shit left and right that keeps screwing with it) picking Subzero is pretty much saying "here, take a win" against quality players.

Dude I don't understand why, fighting game thread after thread, you fail to realize there are people that just play this game for fun and don't give a shit about how good or bad they are. They don't have "organized local groups" and don't hang out every other day to play fighting games. None of what you said matters to the people you're responding to.

There's a reason why the hardcore fighting game fanbase is considered the worst of the worst. Don't become a stereotype.

I play these games for fun. I happen to find that I only find fun and exciting matches when we throw 20 bucks or more down to make sure people are on point, or playing in local events. Outside of that, the level of play is just too low to actually enjoy it for the most part.

With the locals, I know I can get a great hard fought match with people pulling out all the stops and going for it. I love that shit. Heck I like it better than when I've been to NEC or EVO. And I've hard far greater fight nights at local bars with no money on the line, just an ad-hock event tossed up with 12 people fucking around who are all good just playing the damn game and trying new shit out to get better. It's strictly casual, but it's great.

And no amount of my being or being viewed as a jerk over this is going to make UMK3 Subzero any less of a for the noobs to kill noobs character.

If any of you are in VA/DC/MD you should come out, we go gentle at first. Once you get used to playing good players offline, you get better, and rather quickly you need to learn, adapt, get good, and drop all conceptions of "to freeze people is cool" when you realize problems in your game and character selection make you free wins in some cases.

The FG community is fine, it's been around longer than most, has a good history, and manages to throw out events left and right, and has even been used by Capcom and others to develope, bug test, netcode, and other for their games. It's very well respected and a good group. I've known some of the same guys since the 90's and they are still out and will tell you how you fucked up from character selection, combos, tactics, and other items after handing you your ass. The top honchos from NAMCO, Capcom, NRS come out to our events and hand out things and play with people and yack it up. It's really a great community. Just get your ass offline, and view all characters as blobs, and play to win and get better, you'll fit right in.

My first "tournament" if you can call events in the 90s that was a disaster, since then, still not going to win EVO, but ti's fun as fuck and the players are great, amazing, and do other shit than play games. Taken a few sky diving, and others are drinking buddies. It's a good group.

Talk about bringing back my childhood. What an amazing game. I can't believe this fake violence was consider extreme back when I was a kid.

I'm really enjoying this arcade release but man does the 360 controller suck for fighting games , so badly. I really , really need a fighting stick..

And this is where you differ from most of us. Your idea of having fun on a fighter with no cash on the line is not even an option let alone a fleeting thought for the masses we don't get together regularly for non serious tourneys with high ranking players,....we play with our friends slouched on the sofa having a laugh and a beer, in our environment tiers mean fuck all. There is a certain amount of skill but no-one really cares that much to bother about who is a better pick against certain fighters or that SZ/Scorpion are wank (to you and your crowd). Characters are picked due to styling and because they are fun to play with.

It's cool it's your thing and it's interesting to read about but it is two totally different worlds, this is what you have to realise.

Talk about bringing back my childhood. What an amazing game. I can't believe this fake violence was consider extreme back when I was a kid.

It's all relevant to what was available at the time. Digitised actors ripping heads and arms off was as bad as it got video game wise back then.

To me the first MK was still probably the most controversial of the bunch because the game was using (fairly) realistic looking people in it...at least for the time. The whole thing had a more "real" look to it while the other ones were more cartoony looking.
Plus, it was a first to have literally buckets of blood shoot out whenever someone got hit.

SZ/Scorpion are wank (to you and your crowd).

No, it's not "to my crowd" it's "everybody who is remotely good at the game", you make not like tiers but they exist and they do so for a good reason.

Let me give you the most basic noobed up explanation there is.

Human Smoke and Scorpion. They share the same move list, they share one of the three same dial a combos, one is god tier and the other is mid tier, but on the lower end. Why is this? And it's not disputed by anybody who can tie their shoes in this game.

For starters Smoke moves slightly faster. For another one of Smoke's dial a combos, while only a two hit combo is actually a sick juggle setup. Third, due to some freaks in the game engine, smoke can re-juggle the crap out of the cast and do over 50% damage off anytime he catches you and a fair amount of the time he can straight up infinite or 100% combo you if he catches you so.

So right there, two characters that are nearly the same. However one moves faster and will either kill you flat out if he catches you, or only needs to catch you twice. Compared to a slower character that needs to catch you three or four times time to kill you.

There are more differences, most glarlingly in Smokes favor, but can you not see how one character is inherently stronger than the other? If two players of max skill that can play the game go at it, the Smoke character has a massive advantage on his hands, in some cases it's large enough that baring a really stupid mistake on his part the battle is utterly one sided. There is no earthly reason to pick Scorpion over human Smoke IF YOU ARE GOOD.

Smoke, like most of the top characters, requires that you're fairly good to get that damage out of him. So if both players suck, it's a 50/50, if both players are OK, it's a 50/50, if both players are pretty good it's utterly one sided in Smokes favor.

That's how tiers work. The worse you are, the less they matter, the better you are they start to really matter.

Tiers apply like that to just about everything. At times the differences can be glaring, ie unmasked Sub is mid tier because he can infinite Robot Ninjas and the Ice Clone is by far his best move. Un masked sub can't do those infinites and he gives up Ice clone for the nearly worthless ice puddle and ice ball was never all that good against players that weren't asleep when you faced them.

Between characters that are very different the differences can be hard to see or blatant. Kabal has tools that actually soft counter the rest of the cast used in subbtle was, he's a counter pick to every character. Ermac is able to abuse re-juggles far worse than anybody but you have to be perfect, as a result he can 100% combo everybody off almost everything and has over 20 odd 100% combos, it's laughable.

There are other differences that you wouldn't know unless you really know the game. IE, not all round houses, upper cuts, sweeps and normals are the same, even if the animations look identical. For example some classes of characters have shit uppercuts but great roundhouses, for others it's reversed. Futhermore in some cases, some classes of characters are actually easier to re-juggle. The most glaring example here is that robots are insanely easy to re-juggle. So any ninja with a re-juggle (see Smoke and Ermac) pretty much beats them for free as the normal rules against re-juggling that limit them (though Smoke and Ermac can glitch out those rules and keep the juggle going on other characters as well and they are almost unique in this case) don't apply. Un masked can abuse the air freeze to act as a re-juggle, but only against robots, masked sub can't so ends up straight up fucked against robo smoke where un masked sub just infinites him.

But if you want to think that Scorpion is as good as Smoke, go ahead!

I can't believe he wrote yet another essay explaining tiers when you specifically told him that you honestly don't give a shit. Holy shit.

I'm pretty sure he lives in some bizarro world where everyone who buys a fighting game is super serious about becoming the next Justin Wong.

sd11, I'll try to explain it as simple as possible:

I bought SSF4AE. I play it once every week or two with my friends. All we do is fuck around with random characters for about 5 matches before moving on to the next game. We have fun doing this. We don't care about trying to improve or get better because we only play the game against each other. This is why tiers don't matter to us.

It's the whole 'noob' thing. I've been playing Mortal Kombat since 1992 when it was released in the arcades. Just because I don't fight at a high level and know all combo's/counter picks etc doesn't make me or anyone else who has a similar experience a 'noob'......it just means we don't take it seriously. I like to play as Sub Zero as that is where I began back then. I thought he was cool then (forgive the pun!) and still do now, tiers just don't register or come into it at all.

I'm still good friends with a guy who played it at the same time and we still spar for fun nowadays on my arcade cab and on MK9....he played as Scorpion back then, has done thru all iterations and still does now, again tiers don't mean anything it's all about having 5-10 mins of smashing the shit out of each other and seeing who can pull off the most finishing moves.....that's it, nothing more, nothing less. Same with SF...serious fights go out of the window and it's Sagat v Sagat slugfest where tiger uppercuts/Supers/Ultras can only be used.....nothing serious....just a laugh....and some of those games are awesome!!

Being too serious can ruin these games IMO. You get online and because some spoilt little shit thinks he should be winning every game, when he does start taking a beating he rage quits and starts calling you a 'noob'

The bottom line is to the vast majority to us, the ones who don't make money out of it and the ones that don't play in tourney's its all about the fun factor....not serious in the slightest and that's where tiers, frames etc just mean nothing and never will. I'm not having a go at anyone, you pays your money you makes your choices but to blanket anyone who doesn't take these things super serious a 'noob' is very blinkered and borderline obnoxious.

Ah, people online. I love when you get one that feels entitled to a win and flips out when they don't get it.
Part of the problem with the fighting game world is that there are so many random people that seem to think they are some kind of high level player because they comb the Shoryuken forums and watched EVO matches.
I'll forever be that guy that crushes the average joe, but will always lose to a truly good player...and I'm happy with that. I do get a kick out of those wins against people that think they're much better than they are, though. Especially on casual mode. I mean...who cares?

Bingo! It is good to feel smug, especially when the abusive msgs roll in, then you know you've hit a nerve :D

Used properly doesn't mean much, he's still not high tier or that good at all. So it's a stupid stance to take. Tier lists are just where the characters are ranked as to how good they are. Subzero is one of the easiest and most brain dead characters out there to pick, but he's limited, and he's not top tier or that good.

Here is the tier list

Kabal - 155
Human Smoke - 145
Ermac - 135
Kung Lao - 134
Nightwolf - 132
Kano - 128
Reptile - 127
Robot Smoke - 126
Kitana - 126
Sonya - 114
Jax - 113
Sindel - 111
Unmasked Sub-zero - 108
Scorpion - 107
Stryker - 100
Jade - 93
Liu Kang - 91
Sektor - 88
Mileena - 87
Classic Sub-zero - 80
Cyrax - 77
Sheeva - 77
Shang Tsung - 76

The only game he was ever reasonably good in was vanilla MK3. And honestly, you're not going to see good players using anybody below Reptile unless they are goofing around. Winning with low tier characters smacks more of playing people who don't know what the hell they are doing than anything. Beating up fools doesn't make the character good, which is all Sub is good for in MK3, taking out idiots and people that aren't all that great.

Subzero gets raped by anybody with a teleport in general. Ermac and Smoke are hilariously good at this with 80%+ damage combos off teleports and anti-airs that do not require a corner and often 100% combos that do not require a corner. Subzero requires a corner to get that sort of damage and can only 100% robots mid screen due to a glitch. His special moves, outside of unmaskeds clone, are also no where near as good as most of the cast against an opponent who isn't high or a asleep.

Only way to beat a good person in the arcade with subzero? Step on his foot as hard as you can and hope you can take him out before the guy realizes what's going on.

"Powerful" eh.... a character with worse special and normal moves than half the cast, is unable to do 80% or greater combos from the mid screen unless he's playing against a robot, and does not have a counter to all situations..... hence why he isn't even close to the top tier.

For more fun, here are some other tier lists for the games in the kollection

Mileena
Jax
Liu Kang
Kitana
Kung Lao *
Scorpion
Shang Tsung
Cage
Raiden
Sub-Zero
Baraka
Reptile *

That's still pretty accurate for any arcade port, and sub, yet again, is suck tier. The * is because even where they are, they face rape some at the top. IE Reptile has a horribad match vs Scorp, it's bullshit and there isn't much he can do short of roll over and die, and scorp isn't even that impressive, but he eats millena alive. Kung Lao, well (tiers are done out of 9 games on actual odds all things perfect) takes crappy characters like sub (and yes, he is dog shit) something like 7-3 rather than 8-2 or 9-1 rape that other tops do. However he's better against the top. Namely, he creates more situations to do damage, but doesn't have a "haha you threw a projectile/pressed a button you lose 80% of your life combo"

MK1's is even funnier.

Cage
Raiden
Kano
Kang
Sonya
Scorpion
Subzero

The top 3 have a glitch where they can hop kick anybody to death and 100% combo from anywhere on the screen. Kang comes quasi close, and Sonya has a few qualities. Scorp and Sub are absolute shit tier. Sub being the worst of the 2,

Tiers are funny, the better you are at the game the more they matter, the worse you are the less they do. The top characters often take more skill to get the most out of then the lower ones.

I like Subzero as a character design, but as an actual pick.... he's from joke to picking him as an insult when playing good people. It's a bit of a shame.

Where are Rain and Noob Saibot? Noob Saibot was pretty damn good from what I remember.

I don't know anybody that has ambitions of becoming the next Wong, and I've played Wong and several people that played with him regularly. Most of the competitive group just actually enjoys playing the games. The thing is, once you get above a certain skill level it becomes harder to get quality matches, so you seek out better players. The only way to find quality people is to go to tournaments and get familiar with your local scene. Shit several people in my local area don't even bother with tournaments and have a family and kids, they can still do all the combos and all the technical items and are strictly casual, they just aren't noobs (people who are new and ignorant of the game) or scrubs (people who idiotically insist the game doesn't work the way it does, tiers don't exist, and whine when they get killed with a touch of death combo or iced in two).

When you play better players you get better, you have to, that's all there is to it. When you play trash you get worse as it doesn't challenge you.

And the most important part of the tournaments, and why most people go, is hanging out and having fun. The fact that people pull out all the stops and really try helps, the pressure makes it that way. It's the same reason money matches are better than matches with no money on them, it adds stress and you're sure people are pushing it and playing their best.

Barring a select few, probably less than a dozen in the US, nobody wants to make a living out of it.

However I'll take the scrubbiest SRK comber who can't do anything who at least is aware of how things work and gets his panties in a wad if he loses, over the dolt that insists the sky is green when you offer him advice that he needs to drop the character and his tactics are trash and to stop using crap moves.

Rain isn't really in UMK3 and noob isn't really either. They are in trillogy, which is an abomination of a game due to various technical issues and was never really played.

For the most part it's a non issue though. All you're going to see among good UMK3 players is a metric fuck ton of Kabals, Human Smokes, Ermacs and Kung Lao's, they destroy the rest of the cast so one sidedly (one odd exception) it's not even funny, the rest of the cast might as well not be in the game for all it's worth. The one exception is Reptile, he still eats the rest of the cast but he's not god tier. However his rush punch and slow forceball oddly enough make him the best character to take Kabal on. You don't even really care about hitting them. Wiffed rush punches are better than ones that hit for mobility reasons and slow forceball is the only thing that quasi works against IAB tactics. The match is still in Kabals favor like it is vs the rest of the case, just not as badly. With Ermac and Smoke you just pray he makes one mistake and then kill him in one combo, but they have no way to force Kabal to make a mistake. Reptile may take 2/3 combos to kill Kabal, and he may have no way to force a mistake, but he does have the ability to actually move in on a good Kabal and stop a good part of Kabal's strategy.

Either way it's a gambit. I can do all of Ermacs combos and I prefer him, but for Kabal, counter pick with Kabal and turn it into a 50/50, best you can do.

EDIT- For those looking to step it up a notch or just do better at a lower level, pick Robot Smoke. He has some good combos, Robots and Ninja characters share having a insanely good roundhouses, shitty uppercuts, and fairly good sweeps. Since both Robot and Ninjas are reaction characters and not rush down (yes, yes, Human Smoke is a fucking does all aberation but he's next to the all might Kabal for a reason) the roundhouse is always the better counter as it kicks them across the screen and the distance is more important than the actual damage. Robots are normally suicide as some juggles work only on them, but that's upper level stuff and if you're playing online odds are you'll NEVER run into anybody that knows how to abuse that.

Plus, he has the easiest counter 40% combo out there if you play idiots like subzero that throw ice balls that aren't part of a combo. Teleport, spear, 5 hit dial a combo, it's 40% damage straight up. At upper levels that's pathetic since you need to kill in one or two combos, but for how stupid easy it is, and how much crappy players like to do shit like lob ice balls, spears, and other "if I hit them I get a combo" crappy moves outside of combos, you get a free 40% on reaction to any of that. You'll slaughter those fools and chew through them like wet tissue paper, and that combo is brain dead easy to do. There are ways to sneak extra hits into it, but probably not worth your time. The combo also lands off any air to air hit, or any jump in, but you'll only net 37% damage. The result is simple though, off any jump attack, or any time the other tosses any sort of projectile out of a combo, you get damage, land three hits like that and you win.

It's stupid easy to do and it kills anybody who tries to use projectiles outside of combos on reaction. It'll fall apart vs better people, but it's hilarious against lower. For shits and giggles you can also teleport, spear, turn invisible, then hit the 5 hit combo and that works as well.

He also only has one counter pick of characters that are lower rated than him.... unmasked Subzero. But that requires three things to happen. 1. It's not a shitty Subzero that tosses out freeze balls outside of combos hoping they will hit (virtually all Subzeros are utter shit given his tier ranking so unless it's a good player pulling pranks no worries). 2. He can actually do the infinite on robot characters, it's a stupidly easy infinite to do based of ice rain, but it again requires that the player is actually aware that some infinites are robot only, you probably won't see someone who's aware of this fact. 3. They are aware that the only way unmasked sub is good is ice clone spam (fast enough it can't be countered, that and slide are subs only good moves in mk1-3) and he actually leaves them behind him to stop the teleport. Stupidly most sub players use classic sub, and the few that use the better one leave the clones in front of them, and throw iceballs outside of combos. So while it is a horrible match, nobody good is going to be using either Robot Smoke or any variation of Subzero so you shouldn't have to worry, just be aware that someone good might realize you're playing Robot Smoke and prank pick Unmasked Sub on you just to have you tele into a clone and than infinte your ass for shits and giggles.

I've trained up a couple guys to full 100% Ermac nonsense and Human Smoke ass rape style level. I start them all off with Robot Smoke pure counter scrub killer... and I prank them from time to time and then teach them "this is why you never ever ever ever ever pick a Robot once you get decent at the game, you'll get massacred" but if you're online, it should be free wins.

Another, invisibility kinda works with him, the move is a joke. Inherently you have a bit better awareness where you are and that's it. Where it comes into play is scrubs will do the scrub thing and throw a projectile out of a combo, but instead of "if it hits I get combo" it will be "if he blocks he will show up" soon as you see the animation, tele and combo. It also mind fucks lower skilled players when you do it mid combo. If I'm going for humiliation, combo into it one combo, then counter when dumb fuck lobs a projectile to try and force you to block and be seen with a tele, then combo out of it on your next combo.

One more, Smoke has an air throw, which is one of the best AA options there is, abuse it. It's not going to work vs good players, but it will force crappy players to yet again start lobbing projectiles out of combos, which you teleport on reaction to and......

I've never snubbed your advice.....quite the opposite in fact. I just don't take kindly to being called a noob because you deem a character I have fun playing with shit and tell me to drop him!! I don't care if the moves are trash, I don't care if the tactics are trash...I have fun. Simples.

Why so serious?

Anyways, has the game been patch or anything on the PS3? Is the online playable?

On-line pansies like to disconnect when they've lost or realize you're too good without any penalties. On-line ratings is fucked.

No the netcode is still abominable and there is no rumor of a patch. To make matters worse they used one of the crappier arcade ROM versions for UMK3. Plus if you accept an invite from someone while the game isn't loaded, it will fuxor the ROM save and drop any of the secret characters you had unlocked. Not so much of a deal in general, but still a pain.

I don't deem him that, he is shit, end of story. There is just no ways around it. The ice ball is a shit move and you're never going to land it on a good player outside of a combo. The puddle is completely worthless against people that aren't asleep, the slide is OK. He also lacks the damage output of other characters meaning he's not getting 100% combos off the iceball making it utterly horrible compared to Smokes Spear, or Ermacs lift. He's crap, end of story and any character with a teleport against him = free win as long as the other guy is good.

I mean, I like Dan in the street fighter series because he's funny, but I'd never kid myself that he's remotely good or insist that I can show someone who's good the power of Dan... and Dan in the SF series isn't as bad as Sub is in MK1/2/UMK3 and I'm dead serious about that.

I was reading this thinking wow, I main Dan wonder what he thinks of that. You strike me a Ryu?Ken player or maybe Blanka?

For the sake of the thread ummmm MK sucks play SF :)

They made note on Facebook they are working on a patch to fix the on-line play.

Depending on your perspective, Dan might not even be the worst character in some instances of Street Fighter. He usually has good normals at the very least.
In #4 he can keep up with a lot of the weaker characters. I've run into a Dan player that beat my ass pretty handily. The guy had precision and style. The trick is, if the same dude was using Ryu I'd have lost even worse. Just because a great player can kick ass doesn't really make a character competitive.

SSF2T Boxer and O Sagat
SFA2 Chun
SFA3 Akuma V-ism, Sim a/v, Sakura V-ism
SF4 AE- Akuma and Yun
MK1 Cage
MK2 Kung Lao, Milena
UMK3 Smoke, Ermac
MVC2 MSP
MVC3 - debating but it's a non pheonix or best friends team so far, don't really care or play it. Currently pulling wolvie, zero, akuma.
HNK Rei, Toki
MK9 Ermac, Kung Lao, Cage
BB Mu, Nu - but I suck at this game so bad it doesn't count

Right and ONLY in 4, just like Sub is only passible in 9. One game does not change a characters crap trend. Or you really want to put A3 dan up vs A3 Akuma, you will lose. Provided the Akuma does not suck.

Hence also why my comment "dan is better" a joke fucking character designed to suck is better than Sub, Sub is one of the shittiest and worst characters once you are kinda good at the game to have ever been created. It's tragic.

Never? I've just don't get that vibe from you..... :p

The difference here is I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, others have their opinions/likes/dislikes and I respect that. I'm saying I think he's fun to play as....no matter how much you try to force your opinion and that is the point your missing entirely. Just like I have more fun playing as Guile than Ryu/Sagat etc. Being the best fighter just isn't the be all and end all.

Anyways I'm done going round in circles.

I liked Dan in Vanilla SF4. Actually I liked playing as him and Sakura a lot and I believe they were ranked last and second to last in the tier lists. When playing against my friends I would take them and have a lot of fun. Part of that fun though was because with those characters we could have closer matches without me holding back. I'm not great at the game but I do have good reactions and can figure out my opponents pretty good so I'm the best fighting game player out of my friends.

However if I was playing someone good I would probably use Zangief, Akuma, or Seth (gotta be careful with Seth though since hes made of glass). Would maybe use Sagat to, I never really used him much but in Vanilla SF4 he was really really good.

For me its most fun when the matches are close so I try to make my character picks based on that. If I'm playing someone at my level or higher I'll take good characters but if they're not at my level I'll take lower characters. So depending on who I'm playing I'll use almost the whole cast in a game and its all fun. I wouldn't be opposed to uses good characters with handicaps either but most people don't like doing that, so I don't.

If I win 3-4 matches in a row online I pretty much always pull Dan out. Why not? If I lose...what do I care? If I win, it at least brings a smile to my face. A nice thing about Dan is that his Ultra beats out a lot of online "uppercut everything!" nonsense, too. Nothing's more rewarding than watching his Ultra completely nullify Ken's flaming dragon punch for the last hit of a round.

yeah the dpad on xbox freaking blows monkey nuts, big time. Never, never have I had so much trouble getting normal movement to register right.Though that could be becasue the last fighting game i played was mk3/trilogy for ps1 and n64. It also seems to happen in general browsing while using the dpad. How microsoft have allowed such a crappy dpad go for so long on thier console, or how it got past QC, I dont know.

It's more of a hat switch than a d-pad, isn't it? Pretty awful, that's for sure.

Even when the d-pad works, because of how I have to position my hand, it's really hard to use the left trigger and shoulder button in conjunction with it. The diagonals flat out don't work sometimes, and any kind of motion where you have to go from one direction to another (like left to right) is a 50/50 venture. I have more luck just using the analog instead.
I'm hoping with the next Xbox they just forgo the d-pad and just have some little macro buttons instead.

Kinda funny how "feels" works into as much of the game as the gameplay itself does. While i loved the half life/UT games, when it came to multiplayer, i preferred and spent 100x more on quake series then the others, because i liked how solid the quake games felt.

Im probably just to used to street fighter IV. I used to play MK 1-3 then quit when 4 came out. I just dont really like how floaty the characters are, especially juggling them in the air. Feels like they are fighting in low gravity.

I always hated how the arcade MK games were a constant work in progress.
There were massive version changes happening behind the scenes for all of them. They'd re-balance the characters, change the fatalities, tweak damage, etc. with chip revisions in the arcades. While the idea sounds great, it shows how little forethought actually went into the games. Plus, changing the finishing moves just for the sake of it was such a cheap ploy for money.

The floating properties were also getting out of hand for a while. Juggling was novel in 1 and 2, but by 3 they were getting out of control...and you'd pretty much have to take a lunch break during combos even though all of those additional hits might only do an additional 1% damage each. Sometimes I think the creators of Tekken 6 must've liked MK3.

#4 is when they lost me for good. The weird weapons and animation had me swapping over to Virtua Fighter 3 of all games.
