Has any investigated a mini-ITX platform that could do six-core Folding? If so, what did you find for hardware?

probably not. most m-itx board circuitry really isnt designed for high end processors. smallest id go is m-atx honestly.

It is possible to get a mITX six-core setup but you need the 95W versions of the Phenom II X6 CPUs. That means the Phenom II 1035T or the 95W version of the AMD Phenom II 1055T (HDT55TWFK6DGR). Once you find one of those CPUs, then you can use this mITX mobo:
$125 - Asus M4A88T-I Deluxe AMD 880G mITX Motherboard

The real big issue is actually finding the 95W Phenom II X6 CPUs.

EDIT: NVM about the finding the 95W 1055T. Apparently it's being sold as an OEM CPU:

Clicking on that link and then clicking "Technical Specifications" shows the TDP of that processor at 125w... not 95w

Click on the actual sales page for the CPU. The sales pages from Provantage, Tigerdirect, and Superbiz all list a 95W TDP. In addition, the model number of that CPU is the same model number shown in that Asus mITX' mobo's CPU Support List:
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=jGAoIFEziW5sPYy7

Phenom IIX6 1055T(HDT55TWFK6DGR),2.8GHz,95W,rev.E0,SocketAM3,6-Core

So more than likely Google inserted the wrong number.

yeah their a pain in the ass to find because a lot of non reputable sites are labeling them incorrectly. there were a few people in the AMD section saying they bought the 95w chips and they ended up being the 125w chips. though as long as the board isnt hard locked to 95w (most biostar boards are now) then you can undervolt it to 95w at stock clocks but cant overclock it at all, same goes with the 95w versions since all they are is binned 125w 1055T's that are undervolted.

As far as cooling quads with a low profile sink... I'm currently running a Lynnfield with hyperthreading using a scythe big shuriken with the thin 120mm fan at 1600rpm. I can only run it at 3.3GHZ because I'm limited to a vcore of 1.200V. It is folding 24/7 and it sits at 80C or just above so the voltage can't really be raised any more. A full tower heatsink will allow you to run at around 3.8GHZ and complete all bigadv units on time so it would make sense if folding is a major concern.

The stock HSF that came with my 1055t was awfully loud and quickly retired. :(
Do you still have that sitting around? It was the heatpipe version, right? The stock one that came with my X4 635 was even worse. All aluminum. If you have it, I'll buy it from you if you're interested.

Jebo_4C, I have a stock HS from my 1055T that has never been installed..Shoot me a PM if u want it..

I know this is an older thread, but I do indeed have an ITX 6 core folding right now. I am using this board-
Asus M4A88T-I Deluxe AMD 880G mITX Motherboard

and a 1090T cpu. I read about it online for awhile before buying, and found you need to add some vreg cooling. I ordered everything, then when I got the board, found that mine already had additional cooling over the vregs. I guess I got a later board or something, as mine has an additional blue heatsink to the board found on the newegg page (I did buy it from newegg).

Anyway, I have that board, with the cpu cooled by an ECO h20 cooler, and the board temp doesnt go over 40, and the cpu hovers around 35 (folding). I have yet to add a gpu to the box, but will soon throw in a 9800GTX+ (Sugo SG05 case, Ultra SFX psu). I have a Scythe Ultra Kaze on the radiator. Yes, loud.

Good luck

Hi - I've built version 1 of an AMD 1055T based machine for video encoding

Idea is to build a small machine but with powerful encoding for remote use

thread is here - http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1036482603

specs are
a) p1055T and Asus M4A88T-M/USB3 MATX for £220 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/240615
b) Corsair 60GB Force SSD 2.5" SATA-II for £90 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233258
c) 4GB RAM
d) Microatx -ntec Minuet 350 Piano Black Slimline MATX Case with Silver Front Panel - With 350W PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141001

Problem is that I'm new to this - so the case I got was much too large (I don't need anything except SSD, Mobo, USB3/firewire) - and I also didn't get a heatsink/fan -doh! - rectified this with a 212 plus which works but is way too large

So the question is - if I build a version 2
a) can I build it with a Asus M4A88T-I Deluxe AMD 880G mITX Motherboard if it runs probably 10-12 hrs a day
b) what case/ cooling system can I get - I want the smallest case/ combined with being able to run as above - preferably I want the smallest moving parts (e.g. ideally this thing can be ruggedised and sit in a national park attached to a car battery and be left alone for a year between visits)

NB Im not going to overclock

thanks
jim

How about a h50? It is small on the mobo, however takes up about the size of a 120mm fan......but it can go pretty much anywhere in the case, where you would have room

I have this IN WIN mini ITX case. It's very small, but because of that it's kinda loud. If you're not installing a DVD drive, then you'll have more room for an aftermarket heatsink, but I don't have any suggestions for one. I'm running an E6300 with the stock low-profile heatsink, which is noisy.

During my search for a small case, I found several that only accept laptop-style DVD drives, which I didn't want, but that may be a better option for you. For example, something like this has a big PSU and tons of ventilation with room for a fairly large heatsink. Newegg has a pretty good selection of cases, so you just have to figure out how small you want to go and what compromises will be necessary.

Thanks
these are both interesting suggestions - I like the look of the sugo - and liquid cooling seems to make sense/ be more reliable

Noob question - how do I calculate the total power draw for a system - its clear the 1055t takes 95W - but I can't see how you find out e.g. the power needed for the SSD http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233258 or say the h50 or the extra taken by the mobo - if in doubt it seems to make sense to stick with say 300W - whereas the Inwin looks nice but 160W may be cutting it a bit close ?

Thanks
