Minecraft

since i wasnt around for the original hardcraft, and only built on the last two worlds i would very much appreciate a new world.
cheers for your enthusiasm greatone

I might stick around after Hash's memorial is built. But beyond that, I don't know.

So whatever everyone else wants!

It feels good to be doing this. Thanks Greatone!

i would love for the original hardcraft to come back
i never did get to finish my castle on it :-/ and i did spend a lot of time on it

I sent one of his friends a message on facebook about the memorial. So lets do it and get it up.

Ok guys, so what are you going to want. The return of the original Hardcraft Server? (I still have the world saved) or start a fresh new Hardcraft Server? I've got the host up, just setting up the virtualization and stuff now, if I get the answers and a final choice we can get working on that Hash Memorial before the day is over.

A new one would be perfect, tell me if you need any help, anyone have any ideas for the hash memorial? My ideas atm is

Cathedral (not religious)
Gigantic Tree

And new one is good so that everyone has the same advantage to find a good building spot and so on... I dont think itd be fair or as much fun if some people are starting with huge creations while others arent..

I'm hooked on this game. Stupid game. Damn it. I didn't want to like this game. It is ruining my sleep pattern. It's 2am! I have to be at work in 5 hours!

Here is what is eating my time. This is just the beginning. Two towers for the entry gate. One waterfall at each tower corner with a lava fall in between the towers.

From the beginnings of the bridge in daylight:

This wall will be broken up by shorter towers and completely surround my island:

I experimented with metal doors and lava. I was hoping to create a trap door system that would allow the lava to flow when the doors were activated. Think a gate made of lava. Unfortunately the doors don't allow lava to flow through when opened. That, or the lava refuses to change its course.

The lava and water flow dynamics definitely need work. But it is still in beta.

Still pictures don't do it justice. I love the way it looks when the water is flowing with the torches shining though at night.

Wow thats awesome shadow! Never had that problem with minecraft hehe, for some reason i cant play it for extended periods of time ie: 4 or more hours.

Well me neither, still dont think a cathedral has to be related to a religion, more like a nice place, but nevertheless, how about uhh a gigantic castle that we all work on? And thanks a lot greatone! you mind posting ip once its ready? im gonna go look back through thread and will post if i find it

down with the Hash cathedral

What about a big domed building? We could build a grand building that wouldn't have to be a cathedral of cross shaped. I think the tree idea is good though.

re: hash memorial
Reposting what I wrote on the hashland forums, a giant statue of Hashmang's avatar (pig in suit) would be my first choice.

Personally I prefer as close as it gets to vanilla. Hashland went through a few iterations with different mods and whatnot but at the end of the day the question is whether it is a survival or creative server. If it is survival then things like fall and creeper damage should be there to make the game more difficult without the assistance of a magic carpet etc.

I do think that iConomy (or whatever it was called) does have a place so you can obtain the more limited resources for your builds but they have to be priced according to rarity. Building an extensive rail system without the ability to buy iron ore will be difficult at best.

Hashland has also shown what will happen if players have the ability to just terraform without digging and spawn shit all over the place. Eventually someone will place 30,000 TNT blocks and screw the server up.

It's a balancing act for sure. It's also true that MC players go through cycles. I was very active on Hashland till I burned out and then I didn't log in for a couple weeks or so. It will imho be hard to keep a persistent population up.

I haven't played online much. I never saw much point in building with no challenge, so I would definitely play if there's survival mode. If it's just creative mode, I wouldn't be much interested.

I don't have any input on the memorial, but I'd like to contribute at least a few blocks.

I'd also vote for survival mode. Maybe even add mods that make it more team-oriented survival mode if possible. I like the creative aspect as well, but like yippee said, if it's pure creative then we might as well be on a singleplayer map.

I agree with having minimal addons that make the game bearable. iConomy was great, magic carpet was a little unnecessary(I liked it but could live without it), fall damage I hate so I wouldn't mind to see it reduced but it should probably exist, warps are pretty much necessary imo. The real time map was amazing and I'd like it back if it doesn't lag the server in the future.

Overall the risk vs reward needs to be there as does the effort vs gain. If we can get anything for free then it becomes boring, but if we have to work night and day to make something we can do in singleplayer in 5 mins, then it also becomes boring.

i would vanilla... with the ability to create warps.

that would be it for me

id add but prefer xfire by leaps and bounds, but yes, I liked the diamond tools in the beginning thing too, that was really helpful and saved me a lot of time.. but besides that and warps I think thats it!

thank you so much greatone for getting this started!

I installed xfire one time.... and then didn't see a point since no one else I knew used it... lol

Its awesome, I play cod4 semi-competitively and thats what everyone uses for that so I have lots of contacts there, if you/the server people all add each other itd be awesome, mines invert07, and its a LOT less laggy than steam

I need names to add to the white list.

As of right now, we are running pure SP style! Survive as well as you can! no commands, no nothing!

It's single player for all you SSP players, but with others for you SMP players...

I've whitelisted the server, with it being such a pure server I'd hate to see it go to poop. Especially the Hash monument, should never be harmed ever!

Ok I spent a bit of time testing and running around, nothing special, everything seems solid for now.

The server will get a night's sleep, hopefully by then I'll have some names to get a list going, and I'll turn the server on in the morning (CST)

For those of you that would like to see the original Hardcraft server back, or would like to see the massive creations that it has. Be patient I'll be bringing that one online next, might be later in the week but it's next on the list.

When I turn the server on, I'll post the IP for everyone.

ocbaud in game :)

can't wait for the original hardcraft server to be up :-D i was very proud of my castle.

From my own observations, the longest lasting, most "fun" MC servers are ones that stick fairly close to vanilla and don't allow people to spawn everything. Like others have said, being able to spawn things or having tools like "cuboid" or whatever it is to make things for you causes the game to become very boring very fast, as well as cheapening the value of projects your players create on the server.

There is just that added "wow" factor when you know someone built something by hand from hand-mined materials and it makes people feel good when they hear others being impressed by a structure they built.

My recommendation would be a plain vanilla server with something like the following settings/mod combo:
-Vanilla, Monsters on.
-Builder Whitelist
-Get a mod to prevent Creeper terrain destruction. Still spawns creepers, creepers still hurt, but they don't alter terrain when they explode.
-Get a mod to re-enable a SMALL amount of health regen. (Half a heart every 30secs to 1 minute) Not enough to regen during a fight, but enough so that you don't have to constantly have your inventory full of bread because you occasionally fall off your structures as you build.
-Item Repair mod. Allows the usage of mundane items like wool and gravel for the repair of things like armor and tools. This way, people aren't afraid to use their rare materials for a tool or armor piece which will break in half an hour, but they still have to work to maintain them.
-Day/Night cycle length mod. Set daytime to last 2-4x as long as night. This creates larger windows for productive building, but there is still a night cycle to enjoy.
-STRICT rule against spawning anything, for anyone, including admins. Except in cases of replacing lost stuff due to griefing, server error, game crash, etc.

The above is what has been working out great for a server me and a friend started back when SMP first came out. Over time, we picked up all the above mods and it's now a very satisfying server to play on. The keys I think are really the "No spawning anything" and "No creeper destruction" parts, but the other mods really make for a more pleasant playing experience without ruining much of the perceived "challenge" or making it feel cheap. They just remove some of the annoyances of every day building.

Unfortunately, I don't remember any of the mod names, as it was my friend who actually found and installed them on the server. I would have to ask him for the names; It would probably be pretty easy to look them up though if you were interested.

bukkit is all new to me, I'm still running an old version of hmod, so slowly we can get mods as voted by the community, for now I just want to give everyone a place to play together as we should. :)

added ocbaud and dudewth

ingame name is maqzzz i think :) cant really check, but it should work, i am looking forward to building again.

I never really understood the need for that. So what if a creeper blows up terrain, not like it can't be rebuild and what else are you going to do with your online time anyway.

FWIW hmod turned out to be a major performance hog on Hashland. Performance substantially improved once the server was switched to Bukkit (even though it's still in beta or whatever). A bunch of essential mods are working fine with Bukkit (i,e, /warp /home).

Yeah, hmod kinda sucked. But one thing it taught us was that we should regularly reboot the server. Bukkit was a lot better but we still needed to reboot the server every so often. Hash said he found something to automatically reboot the server but I'm not sure if I ever saw it working.

The only pluggin that keeps me on hmod is craft book, once that moves over ill switch. Of course I only have about 5 people on my server so no lag yet.

Im at breakfast right now when I get home ill add the last few names and then turn it on.

P!rate: both
