Minecraft

I did that on both ends of my skyway but it wasn't enough to get me across and past the booster on the other end and up to two track hill.

When my middle booster works, it works. but it only work 50% of the time. I guess you need to come from a incline as it seems. i'll have to mess with my middle one.

There is also an uphill booster that is VERY effective. i will search for it.

Once the resource consumption goes down enough, we're looking at splitting the server, and putting one with iConomy and strict (no/give/time/warp) on a different port..
What does it actually take to run a server, resource wise?

does anyone know if a mod or hack exists that makes using the neither in SMP possible?

I haven't played minecraft since blackops came out, but decided to fire the server back up on Sunday to checkout some of the more recent changes (health is the biggest one) and was a little disappointed to see that Portals still didn't work.

anyone know?

From what I have been reading.. There is no Main world and hell or nether world in SMP.. However by changing the properties, hellworld=true, instead of false, the world is regenerated into red skies, lava and whatnot everywhere.. Also, nether mobs like the ghast appear everywhere and wreak havoc everywhere.. Not too sure if its even stable to run that atm anyways, but I think so?

I haven't tried it, and have yet to see if the does anything. :p

I cannot in good conscience recommend any style of 'alpha-booster' (the ones that work due to the interference between two minecarts), but instead point you at Minecart Mania.

@Ojax - Man, I wish I could help you. I keep 80% reliable daily backups of the world and weekly backups of the server config, and I'm really cautious about my mod installs. My server is currently running Hey0, Minecart Mania, Roadwalker, WorldEdit. Once the resource consumption goes down enough, we're looking at splitting the server, and putting one with iConomy and strict (no/give/time/warp) on a different port..

Its cool.. I have backups of my server files as well.. The problem was some glitch that wiped my files, or they were overwritten... After that, for whatever reason, the target path of the server.properties files was changed, and even with the path corrected, it would not load Hey0 properly and no plugins would load..

I had this same issue before when the path line wasn't pointing to Minecraft_Mod.jar in the command line... This time however, it was, with no mistakes, and it still didn't load.. I restored from backups as well.. same problem. The only solution came from deleting everything, and reinstalling the mods and plugins and setting each one back up again.. No clue as to what happened... I hope it doesn't happen again.. :p

I like your idea of splitting the server on different ports. Right now, I have dedicated builders on my server with spawn item abilities... There are a few that have been given that power, when I started the server, and now its become very important to them. I'm not taking that power away, but I am not giving out that power to anymore new players.. People will have to accept that two or three players have the ability and their builds will reflect that. I don't see a problem with having the majority playing without spawning items, and a few, with mod status, that do have the power.

I played on Hardcraft with people that seemingly built most of their structures or a great deal of them, from spawned items.. You simply cannot build with Lightstone, leaves, and netherstone, and back before these latest patches, even cloth blocks were not accessible.. Did I get all pissy and jealous and demand I had the same privilege? No.. I even confessed to most there, that I wanted to acquire my materials myself.. Guess what? No problems! So what if what I built didn't have a plethora of diamond, gold, and lightstone blocks?? I had a 34 block obsidian factory that I worked in for hours making Obsidian to add some defense and dark color accents to my buildings.. I enjoyed making the factory as much as I enjoyed using it to create obsidian blocks.. Meanwhile, someone else could have been building the Great Wall of China out of Diamond blocks spawning every one of them, and I could care less..

I'm quite positive that my server can have moderators with the ability to spawn items, and players without the ability.. For instance, Zexx on HashLand server.. He has a massive stone almost borg-like hovering fortress with a quite complicated monster killing factory inside.. Now that is fucking cool.. He had no ability to spawn items, yet built his place just fine, and its awesome.. Cool to see, check out, and explore. The fact he didn't have spawned items, doesn't make his place any less special or appealing.. In fact, most don't wanna hear this, but those structures are much cooler to see. There is double the amount of effort put into those versus spawned builds.

All this about spawning items. Im on Hashland, and my Tower uses 0 spawned items. I use the economy thingy to purchase coal and other things that I need quickly, that I dont have much of (yet).

I am enjoying your server Hash.

What does it actually take to run a server, resource wise?

I'm supporting 5 players on a P4 3.0ghz with 1gb of ram, and it horks and chugs and spits whenever someone warps or uses /jumpto to travel more than 100 blocks or so.

It's really frustrating to start the server, and after loading, the first message it displays is "Server can't keep up!"

I'm gonna try and add more ram, see how it runs with 2gb.

when he talks about spawning items... he talks about me :D

Well HashLand is on my Quad core 9550 oc'd. with 4 gigs of ram.. economy 500gig HD. I allocate 1024 ram for the server in the server boot command line.. I always get the server can't keep up message.. Always when I first start, like you said, its the first message I see.

Most, the massive majority, of the poor performance is from the alpha software, and lackluster stability from the client, server, and mods created.. The mod teams are all working their ass off to fix their plugins and mods everytime an update is released.. There is no testing team.. WE are the testers.. So this causes every patch to ruin every mod.. all the time, until some sort of standards are checked first, or Notch gives us the ability to decide to upgrade the client when we see fit.. Keeping servers up longer, and taking less stress off of the modders who are suddenly overwhelmed with people demanding their mod be fixed now!

What I'm not sure of is if I can allocate 2 gigs of ram in the server boot line with only 4 gigs of total ram installed on the computer.. I'm sure it would help the server, but is it going to starve my system of resources, and start swappin and locking up.. I still haven't read anyone discussing this in depth.

upgraded to 2gb of ram, made a BIG difference.

kept the server-config line the same, though.

been awhile...

Seems like everyone's migrated over to Hashland?

Is Hardcraft still going?

Whats Greatone's Linux server? (I guess if it's new?)

And I'm deeply apologetic for the absence... Frustrated with the Bugs and life taking more of my time then I thought it would. I saw the new Mincraft Beta article on Kotaku... and /facepalm'd myself for forgetting this thread.

I'm too lazy to upload video of the server.. So like an hour or two ago, someone connected who was streaming live on youstream.com.. There is a 3:33 video of this guy, who had no access to builders or use of the portals, chat in all caps, and walks around a bit.. For anyone interested to see the area of the world the server started, its in the recorded video.

Thanks to whoever this is, and I am assuming it is someone who frequents these forums? :p

:)

I want to just clarify.. HashLand is a semi-private server, because I am running it from my own computer.. I therefore, can't handle more than 4 - 5 people, due to my DSL bandwidth, not the server capabilities.. I am however in the stages of setting up a proper server host that will have incredible bandwidth.. The server would then be able to support 20 people playing at the same time.. The world and features will be the same, the address would change. Most likely the server would be physically located either Chicago, or California.. Or Texas.. I just haven't got that far along yet. I'm hoping shortly after the Beta release that is soon to be here, and the rift that causes settles down, the world will be moved to an awesome server, allowing me to perhaps publicize it a bit to get a few more active players. I'm really looking forward to more people, more chatting, more group builds and adventures, and PVP ;) I have yet to show off the Iron Arena, a HashLand exclusive, Bedrock Lined, 4 walled, beast of an arena. Featuring Zombie pits, Fighter Pits, and Glass walled Observers area for the common folk, and for the high rollers with 3 VIP rooms at the top. Oh its gonna be on! Standings, Champions, Defending Champions, seasons, and awards. ;)

Sounds like some dream huh? Not when its 80% completed already ;)

If u do go remote host like that I recommend linux, stability difference is night and day even on 1/2 the hardware power.

I check the log now and then couple people get on here and there not many tho, sul you have any future plans for hardcraft ?

I like being able to host it for [H] but that xeon is just wasting power there idle if no one is really going to use it.

I can run 4 minecraft servers easily on the system, I don't know how much bandwidth a server will use. I plan on upgrading to business class at beginning of the year.

I was going to ask you about that actually.. Yeah I will look for linux, and I'm pretty sure it won't be hard to find a host with the option to.

I would host it closer to where I live, perhaps within reasonable distance, but where I live.. we are like.. #last on the ISP speed and comparison charts.. heh.. I'd prefer that, but it seems highly unlikely.

Umm.. arr4ws.. Right when you left, I was left alone with the poltergeist who had spawned right behind me inside tha old missing tooth pub.. and well.. he decided to freak the place a bit..

His tunnel... he has signature redstone torches to guide you into madness deep underground.. I didn't bother going down...

Please someone login.. I'm scared all by myself.. and as if the poltergeist isn't bad enough, Dirty Doug keeps wanting to give me a bikini wax... :(

I don't have any plans for it, seems as people have moved on... it was fun for awhile... but new servers always get more playtime then older places...

Well if you'd like hash I can setup a linux server and let you have access, show u the ins and outs, very simple.

what OS are you running on this machine? I wwas trying to run a server on a similar machine and it would chug like every 15 seconds and it cached to the HD or something as the HD would go crazy mad. This was with a single player logged on.

from what I've been told from the few helping me setup mine, it runs smoother then the Hardcraft one does.

5 people, on a Atom D510 with 2GB of ram, smooth as can be. I seriously think windows is slowing Hardcraft down, and hell it's on Server 2008 R2...

Slow progress, all the smelting of stone and glass take a bit of time... and sheep won't give up enough wool to finish the road just yet but it's coming along atleast.

if anyone wants to look around they can, won't be able to do anything until we officially open the server.

Hardcraft.dyndns.org:35564 (only changed the port)

Xp sp3. With 2gb of RAM now, its slick and solid unless its feeding chunks to the player.. I think the only 'upgrade' I could do at this point is NAS for disk or a whole new machine with a RAID.

There is some interest in switching the box over to a Linux build, but I don't foresee any real performance improvement. If a deal comes through and I get a quad xeon server from work with 32gb, I'll be putting Linux on that.. gonna keep existing server as #1, setup a no cheating/iconomy server as #2, and use server-teleport plugin to chain it to hellworld #3

Your last statement is exactly what I have been looking into for the past 2 - 3 days.. Considering some want to keep their ability to spawn items, and the rest are forced, by me, to mine theirs.. To remove all potential rifts this may cause, I've been looking into chaining together 3 servers setup the same way you have it basically. The first server, which is the one existing, will allow people to keep their spawn item ability, and perhaps allow everyone on that server to spawn items.. Then portals into the second and third server worlds will be all users forced to mine without any extra features besides the iConomy, and a few added mods for added features. The third world being the same as the second only a HellWorld.

This way, you can build freely on the one server, or walk to the portal area and take a portal to the next server where everyone is in the same permissions group and have the same abilities.. Or piss off to hell and die and lag out for a while just for kicks.. :p

yay, I'm almost famous. He said he was new to the game and wanted to see the rollercoaster. I gave him a cart and tried explaining what to do but the portal wasn't working for him. (he also thought i was trying to trick him and PVP him several times) As you can see in the video, he doesnt have text on the signs for the portal, not sure what the issue was.

I just read that ubuntu server only require 1GB of HDD space, I have an extra SSD laying here that's 60GB and I can split that into 10GB chunks and I'd have all the IO I'd ever need.

That is coming along awesome Greatone! I like the wharf and dock crane just waiting to unload a cargo ship! =) Have you ever thought about the possibility of a massive canal with locks that work? The lock in the panama canal is something Ziggbie and I have been looking into replicating ever since I started my server.. Hashland where we are building and near spawn, has a ton of water, and many bays, harbors and water routes.. I'd love to utilize the amount of ocean and create ship and boat canals and routes as another form of travel around our little world.

That would be pretty sweet, I like manipulating water and things like that.

I need to look more into that canal see how everything works.

The iconomy is working great, our entire world is being formed without a single spawned item. One of my engineers is building a full map subway system and digging the tunnels is giving him enough money to buy what he needs to build tracks.

Here is pirate cove.

Some people started building their own hideout around the boardwalk. Great job , but identify yours!

:D

That is truly awesome. I wish my laptop could play Minecraft well. I'd love to build there!

thanks, pirate cove started as a Yacht club project that would reflect the style of the la rochelle port entrance but turned out as a pirate hideout. The boat you see in the middle will have a bigger brother twice as big , but outside with multiple levels and 2 more masts.

town is 2 square km(2000 blocks wide) then there is a 100 block buffer zone, then outside that I haven't dubbed it yet but it's basically the wild, no rules, no law, no restrictions are...

town = Life restoration, no monsters, private properties, shops, no PVP
buffer= no restoration, no monsters, no properties, no shops, no PVP
wild= no restoration, monsters, no properties, no shops, PVP

you guys have a lot of time and a lot of patients to make all this. I can't stay interested long enough but I like just exploring the caves to see how that all flow together and what not.

Minecraft really is almost digital legos.
