Minecraft

thanks, pirate cove started as a Yacht club project that would reflect the style of the la rochelle port entrance but turned out as a pirate hideout. The boat you see in the middle will have a bigger brother twice as big , but outside with multiple levels and 2 more masts.

What server is that on? My wife's laptop might be able to handle Minecraft better then mine...

I can barely play SSP with my 4MB maps. SMP usually brings it to a crawl. :(

Here is pirate cove.

Some people started building their own hideout around the boardwalk. Great job , but identify yours!

:D

My place is the one on the left with no roof yet :p

I won't have much time today but I hope to complete it by the weekend (probably Friday).

So I have a question about Hashland. I only had time during my lunch break today to look around the pirate cove. arr4ws mentioned that there are no quarries. Without spawning all the cobble for that, what is the best way for me to get started on my building project (once I'm granted build rights)? I notice this across almost every SMP server I see in forums. Everyone builds massive projects, and yet there are no quarries to be seen. A lot of them even say they don't spawn items...

What's the deal? Am I missing something fundamental here? I have only ever played SSP before, and I usually end up digging a quarry before long.

I really can't answer you for sure, as I really don't play on any public servers, but the way that I understand it is that some servers just don't want you destroying the landscape in search of materials (such as strip mining). They ask that you fill in areas that you've taken from as to keep the terrain from becoming littered with holes and caverns unless it's intentional (part of your fort and what not)

Hmm... Looks like I'll be making an underground strip mine then!

Actually... This would fit in well with the Pirate Cove. How about some underground passages going from building to building arr4ws???

That's how I plan on doing the housing areas. 25 x 25 mine allll the way to bedrock, top it off and sell the property as residential.

I'm on hashland and did something similar. I started by putting a door on a small cave a little ways away from the spawn and did some exploring. I just kept going down and down and down until I hit bedrock, then started my cavern. I had a lot of cobblestone...

Then I blocked off the main entrance, made it look natural from the outside and created a concealed entry shaft. Visitors are encouraged to leave their valuable belongings at home. :D

thanks arr4ws for keeping my chests safe :) I had been wondering what would happen to them since i hadnt been able to get on in a couple days.

Yah HashLand is soon on its way to a server host.. At the moment, 3 people on the server is almost maxing out my upload bandwidth.. I can't even open a webpage, and they are crashing left and right on the server.. The biggest problem being the incredibly tiny bandwidth I'm on that no server should be running on.

we were 4 yesterday no problem..

thats weird

do you use the computer that's running hashland for anything else besides running hashland?

Yeah, that is the problem.. HashLand IS my main computer. I have like, 5 computers heh, but the one the server is running on, is the one in my signature. I am running Vista 64bit and the server is just running minimized in the task bar. I am not running any other programs off the same computer, just the firefox browser at the same time.

I also, have a fairly minimal DSL ISP connection.. Max upload around 64k/sec and download around 480k/sec.. So I am fairly impressed that anyone else besides me can even join the server.. :p It is also running off a USB cheapo wireless ethernet stick through my wireless router.. which is physically located about 10 - 12 feet away in my Closet. :p

So I could imagine HashLand could perform much much better on a proper server with proper bandwidth.

Really enjoy the game. I would like to join a community if anyone has suggestions.

There are two servers running from people who frequent these forums... A third I think coming soon in the near future ( Correct me if I am wrong there Greatone ;)

Hardcraft.dyndns.org Is the official Hardforum Minecraft server. Incredible amount of work and creations on that server. I recommend you check out DyNamiC_'s Pyramid, The entire spawn area, Vault City, Fweeple's, ocbaud's castle, harsaphes's massive friggen tree of life, everything by babyblue, Legends glass N,S,E,W tower, and basically everything out there.. I still wanna know whose massive pit to bedrock with nice straight faces for walls is near harsaphes tree, and straight south of Fweeple's and my place.. I see no signs.. lol.. You can also perhaps even check out my place, Hash Mines, and Hash Lines :p

HashLand.dyndns.org Is my semi-private server I had started mostly to learn about running a server, and another place to hang out if the other servers people frequent are busy, down, or lagging. My server isn't on fat bandwidth, but we have started the world, and already have some incredible things built, and since I am moving the server to a dedicated host, I am accepting new people to come build for now.

There is also the Rawcritics server that was posted here by a H guy that is, I believe, a moderator on that server. Rawcritics is well beyond what Hardcraft and HashLand have, and have a much larger player group. The stuff there will keep your exploring for days, and I believe, but don't quote me, you may ask for build permission there, if they are accepting new players still. The amount of effort put into everything on Rawcritics server is astounding, and awesome to look at. I find myself overwhelmed at time exploring their world.. It is very impressive! :)

Really though, there are tons of servers for alpha. MC forums have server listings, and you can even find other sites when you google Minecraft alpha server list.. So you should have plenty of options to find an online MC server that you will enjoy playing on. :)

HashLand is down.

I am updating plugins, and reconfiguring the server to run without VisualAdmin.. It has been a giant pain in the ass, and I only went through all the pain of using it for one feature which was to force the spawn location for everyone, most importantly for players who have never been to the server. Hey0's useless /setspawn works ONLY for players that have already connected to the server.. Otherwise, all new players always land at 0,0 in the coordinates.. My spawn location is well off that mark, so new players land in an area with nothing.. when they should be forced to spawn in the area setup with help and signs to read.

I just can't believe hey0 mod can't get that /setspawn to friggen work the way it should... So for now.. all new players will spawn near the beach house near at the coords 0,0 and will have to manually type /spawn to get to the correct location... Incredibly irritating for me, but there is nothing I can do for now...

Anyways, might be an hour.. maybe.. before the server is back up

Edit: Server is back up! Hopefully running a bit better.. who knows :p

Ok HashLand is back up again.. This time running a much more stable build of Hey0... Don't ask hehe...

We now have animals again.. Perhaps many of you noticed the severe lack of animals spawning... Yah well... hehe I fixed that.
edit: This will also mean more monsters at night.. Which will benefit those with monster traps and monster death machines hehe.. The rest.. Get a torch ;)
Hopefully less crashing, time outs, and crap in general.. I know I always say that, and its worse.. but I think its better now? lol

I have the linux server setup, just need to forward some ports.

if you'd like to, get WinSCP and Putty

and I'll show you how to run things.

Hey, I have a dumb question for the guys currently running minecraft servers. I run one locally on my LAN, in a VM, for when friends come over and/or when my roomate wants build. It's nice to have the MP avalible.

With that said, is it possible (without setting something up with Time Warner) to have people outside of the LAN connect to my server? So when friends or myself aren't physically at my house, they're still able to get on? I have a pretty good connection, so bandwidth isn't a very big concern.

I remember trying to do this @ my old house with steam and TF2, but from what I remembered I needed to contact verizon (I was on DSL at that time) for them to enable something that I probably had to pay extra for.

Any ideas?

until I make up my own name and dns, you can use

Hardcraft.dyndns.org:25564

25564 is mine, 25565 is hardcraft, and 25566 will be whatever for testing and me to teach how to use linux to host

and I temporarily enable warp on guests, North, South, East, and West are the 4 locations so far. Borderlands it set to 1000 for now till I choose to go public I guess you can say

what type of router do you use? you only need to forward the port you use to the server and boom that's it. that's all I do, I also have time warner

Thanks for the reply Greatone, I really really appreciate it.

Right now we're using the standard TimeWarner Cable modem thats connected to my roomates apple airport extreme router and then out to computers from there. I've never really had to mess with a setup like this before since my modems have always been a router-modem combo device.

How would I direct traffic with this type of setup? I'd obviously give people the external IP address and port number, but how would the router know which device to send the traffic to?

I don't believe that the airport really has anykind of portforwarding setup either (or not that I saw the few times I've played around with it). I've never had to set it up with the current minecraft LAN server, torrents, Xbox Live, etc, etc, etc and they all work perfectly fine. With past setups, I have had to go in and setup portforwarding rules for most of these.

any ideas? I understand the basics of networking, but some of the more advanced stuff is over my head.

it knows which device because you will tell it, you'll enter the local IP of the server on the portforward page.

ok, I'll check that out when I get home. I might of missed the portforwarding section on the router when I was in there last. Is it possible that the router would somehow know where to forward traffic automatically?

thanks again for the help man. I'm sure we'll get it figured out tonight.

What mod are you running for grief protection? I'm running a vanilla server for 4 of my friends on my ubuntu box and was using Simple Server mod but the updates keep breaking it. Does hMod work well in linux? I need my warp points back!

HMod is the most popular server admin mod. It has the most amount of developers working on it, and a lot of popular and major plugins are designed to work with HMod as well. Even server GUI wrappers like VisualAdmin, McMyAdmin, all work with HMod as well. I've looked into alternate mods, but HMod is the best choice. As far as I know it works in Linux and OSX as well as Windows.. Don't quote me though..

well, it works in windows for sure, and in linux cause that's what I use. no GUI tho for linux, command line or go home :-P

and then on top of that, I run Realms, which is a plugin I can assign permissions to zones inside the game. I can completely keep people out of areas or atleast keep them from doing anything inside it.

Go look at the batch files to run the server inside the HMod.. They should be named, "server.nogui.bat" and "server.nogui_x64.bat"

I'm running vista 64, so I've been using the second batch file to run the server.. Go open that default "server.nogui_x64.bat" file.... Look at it.. Notice the default command line is point at the 32bit java folder??

So HMod has forever, screwed everyone over running the 64 bit OS and that batch file... Since that file runs 32 bit ANYWAYS.. It takes a manual edit to change the folder path to utilize the 64bit java environment... Talk about a massive friggen oversight on their part..

Unless people have known about this previously, found out about it, and changed, everyone thinking they are running in a optimized 64 bit environment, are wrong, because it isn't setup by default to run in 64... Even when the file is named, and appropriately setup for 64 bit users...

So up until this morning, HashLand was running 32 bit batch when it should have been running a 64 bit... Since I changed this, there has been less than HALF the amount of server is overloaded errors, and nobody has crashed yet.... Talk about a massive difference in performance from a simple edit that is a brutal oversight on their part..

You can thank some hardly replied to thread in the MC forums for this fix.. You know how many people out there are assuming their 64 bit server bat file is properly pointed at the 64 bit java folder? Why would ANYONE think they got that wrong? Since besides adding completely optional java commands to that .bat file, there is no reason to edit it and realize they made a mistake... Fuck "ing" Double You O Double You.. lol

Anyways, HashLand is now running twice as well as before... Thanks to a simple remove of (x86) from a bat file... Like seriously.. lol

we need a portal connecting hardcraft and hashland

ftw

I want a portal between my soon to be built home in hashland and my castle on hardcraft

Since that server portal plugin, this can be done actually.. Although the portals between servers I do not think are numerous. Meaning, there will be only 1 main portal between servers..

Hmm... As I type that, I am not even sure I am correct.. However, I remember something about the portals being setup to port you to the spawn of each server, which made me assume you can therefore, only port to spawn of each server. Also, to minimize lag on each server, there should only be one portal to each server... Since each "port" to the new server is acting like a "warp", if there was multiple portals to new servers like multiple warps, every time someone ported around between servers like a warp, everytime it would lag like someone logging in.. ya know? Perhaps I am not even right.. and again, I am AFK on the server, and heard a Zombie beat the shit out of me and I died again.. In the same spot I was when I died before posting here, before..

I should refrain from posting here, while AFK.. there.. hehe.. This message has too many repeated words and double meanings to make any sense.. I dunno.. I think my blood sugar is low... lol

yah.... lets not have the only portals be located on my lands :-/ lol

Finished the exterior of my monstrosity in pirate cove. :D

I have a problem/obsession with symmetry.
