Minecraft

dam this shits addicting just starting playing and after getting killed at night 4 times i finely found some coal (btw why is coal seam so hard to find?) and i could make some torches and then built some nice walls around my base and mine shaft. Now my problem is theirs about 4 pigs and 2 chickens in my mine shaft so its hard to dig whit out hitting them or getting bumped by them.

uhh... coal is pretty easy to find as it's at the surface and very common around any stone or rocky terrain.

also... just kill the pigs and chickens - you could use the meat (2 hearts uncooked, 4 hearts cooked) and feathers (arrows) anyway

It depends, you may need to dig around a bit to find a deposit. My current map didn't have a whole lot near the surface around my start point.

Coal is by far the most abundant ore in the game. It can be found up to 131 elevation, and in deposits as large as 6x6x2 (wxlxh). You must have some pretty rotten luck not to have found any :p

sure, but there's bound to me some rise in terrain within sight that isn't a smooth hill meaning it has exposed stone which is almost a guarantee coal will be visible from ground level somewhere along that face

it's really just knowing what to look for and you can find it very quickly. First timers I could see having a slightly harder time though I suppose

First priorities are always wood (10-15) logs (2-3 trees) is plenty and then find a coal deposit and setup an enclosed space there. The first day gives ample time to do this.

Well, I had my first majorly frustrating experience w/ the game last night. Been making a really big lava moat all the way around the mountain my castle-complex is on, which should encompass my entire complex - it's taking ages to dig the moat trench. My main spiral mine-shaft is almost completely down to the bottom bed-rock, and there's tons of lava down there, so I've been hauling it up in buckets and dumping it into the moat trench.

At one point last night I had just re-filled all of my 20 buckets with lava, and was about to go make a massive deposit in the moat, but I decided to go craft some ladders first so I could get in and out of the trench a little easier. I walked over to the crafting table and right clicked, which dumped the bucket of lava I was holding right on top of the crafting table!! I quickly burned to death, and my very valuable inventory of lava buckets was almost completely destroyed. So... tonight I get start over and find a ton of iron to re-build my bucket inventory. :(

So the moral of the story is: NEVER try to multi-task while carrying a bucket of Lava!! Keep your finger off the trigger by switching to another item in your inventory before doing anything. ;)

At least your house wasn't made of wood when you did that.....

Mine was.

I've only ever made that mistake with water, guess I'm lucky!

I just finished my cactus farm! I get about 10-12 cactus every 5 minutes, it's my first farm/factory in this game so I guess that's not bad? I was starting work on a monster farm and thought "Wow, this is huge and will take a long time, I should build something smaller first." Getting the water to flow right can be a serious pain in the butt. It's 15x19 and farms 32 cacti continuously. I also set-up a pressure plate to light up a redstone torch when there's cactus to collect, but it's a bit redundant since there pretty much always is unless I've *just* collected it.

waste of my 14 dollars, it has amazing capabilities but just not the type of game for me. my fat friend on the other hand plays it 5 hours a day atleast

Right, Horizontally its procedurally generated, so it keeps going and going. But Vertically, its large enough :). I think 128 blocks from ceiling to floor.

64 is sea level.

It's still not truly infinite... but the world is very very large before integer overflow kicks in.

I finally bit, if only to have a pre-Halloween install. :)

Installed Java in prep for the game and the computer slows to a crawl.

I got lost in a cave earlier, could not find my way back out to my "base". Was trying to figure my way out when all of the sudden something went boom. Bloody creepers

I just got done with a successful mining operation and even found some clay. :)

Wow.. thumbnails are always welcomed.

Side note - found my first treasure box under some sand next to the lovely spawn block.

Has anyone found a use for these mossy cobble-stones?

There's also a limit on how deep you can dig. The game world is only something like 128 blocks tall. I had hoped somewhat that with infdev the game world would extend further vertically as well as horizontally.
Horizontally the game world is "infinitely" (2^32?) wide. Every time you run to the edge a new world area is procedurally created to expand the game world horizontally.

There's a video out there of a guy traveling in a minecart from one end to another and it takes like 28 minutes and he's not reached the horizontal limit yet.

I've got my own personal server running for a few friends, I wish I had the bandwidth or the PC power to host it for all of [H], but theres no way my residential cable company would be happy with me for doing that :).

Its fun seeing what everyone comes up with and the cool structures others build. I can't wait for the halloween update, because we'll reset my server, and all start from scratch in survival mode.

What would I need to host it? I've run game servers... 20 man cod 4 server and no one complained of lag. I even told my isp and they said whatever to that... so ya...

Just the minecraft server software..

Today... well the power went out and my comp shut off. Not cool #1 and #2 it erased my minecraft save file... SO here I am having to start a new.

I started a new castle and started a mine shaft for some recources. Well first thing I stumble on too is a caver FULL of mobs.. And they keep coming. So I blocked off a large portion of the cavern and started digging above the mobs in each cavern to find there cage. No luck yet, but I am assuming there will be 2-5 cages. I mean there is ALOT of them. I got killed twice. Managed to get some of my gear back but still lost a great deal of coal and some picks. I mean like 30+ coal and that was all of it so I am S.O.L now.

Lots happened in my game over the weekend. We finally got a server up so a group of my friends can get on and collaborate. We're using my SP map for now as it had a good base to start from.

I finally found my first Diamonds in the game last night! Followed by finding another 15 of 'em in short order. :D Mining on the bedrock is sooo much better than anywhere else. :)

I ran into one serious problem while on our MP server - Lava buckets don't work correctly at all! When you scoop up a bucket-full of lava, it goes away for a second like you did pick it up (bucket in inventory shows lava bucket too), then the lava pops right back in where it was in the map like you didn't actually change anything! Then when you go to dump the bucket out, it dumps out a lava-spring block, but instead of spreading like it's supposed to, it just disappears after a couple seconds!

Anyone know how to fix this? Is it just a bug in multiplayer, or is there some kind of anti-griefing setting somewhere on the server software that turns off the use of lava-buckets? I'm not griefing - using lava for moats, traps, and decoration etc; so the sooner the lava-buckets start working again the better!

similar thing will happen with water... it's a bug

check out the minecraftforums and look for Llamacraft post under the SMP Discussion subforum

once downloaded you have to open minecraft_server.jar with 7z or winrar and insert the appropriate class(es) to fix buckets. If you still want lava to burn things, etc then don't implement all the classes since most are anti-grief stuff

Ya, Llamacraft fixes the bucket problems. You'll come across a bunch of stuff that doesn't work in SMP default: buckets, mobs, redstone, doors, armor seems local only, minecarts, boats, infinite tools (useful when all there is to do is build), lack of sheep and cows, etc.

Still is an amazing experience playing with people you know. Can't wait to see if some of these things get fixed with the October update.

So what is the deal with the mob traps? If I create a trap do I have to attend the loot collection shute, or can I leave it alone for a couple of hours and come back to a bunch of loot?

Okay, I'm hooked.

I was digging around in the depths, heard water and eventually broke into a massive cavern system that took a couple hours to explore/mine. Fell into lava near the end but it seems that you heal rapidly enough in peaceful mode that you don't burn to death. I also found a bunch of obsidian by following the hiss of lava meeting water but I didn't have any diamond tools handy and didn't feel like smelting up any at the source.

Survival mode is going to be creepy as hell. I'm thinking about making a long chain of surface beacons, turning up the difficulty and try to mine my way back home without a compass.

[edit] This would be perfect for Adventure mode in Dwarf Fortress. Excepting the necessary dual codebase maintenance of course.

loot will stay on the ground once dropped for about 5 minutes... so no you need to be present

also the spawning algorithm checks an area that's 144x144 around you I believe in order to determine spawning locations, again your trap would need to be in this area

lastly, it's usually beneficial to be "bait" for your trap if you can do so safely and lead them all to the trap like a pied piper or something :D

Yeah I think that's the flaw of most traps out there. It's trivial to design something that will catch and kill a mob, but to do so efficiently without the need to make trips between baiting and collecting is something that I haven't seen yet. Will look into what can be done to have the bait station and collection be in the same spot.

you haven't seen this then... http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=47522

epic imo

I started building one... quite fun
