Microsoft has announced today that Microsoft Edge is now available for free on the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. The mobile versions allow you to share favorites, reading lists, and passwords across all your devices, and is available a few languages, including 5 versions of English for the Android version!

While I have no interest in personally trying it, I'm curious how many other things must you integrate with it in order to take advantage of its features. Raming favorites and passwords must mean you have to sign into a Microsoft account, and if you're signed into a Microsoft account, will it force Cortana on you as well? Perhaps some day in the far future someone will install it and we will find out.

We are committed to empowering people and organizations to achieve more. And Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android is another step in that journey. While we’re excited to remove the preview label along with the download restrictions, we are more excited about all that’s ahead. We have a long list of new features to build and improvements to make. We hope you will try the app alongside your Windows 10 PCs and provide your ideas on what can make it even better. As has been our approach with Windows 10, we’ll continue to try new things, learn and build the best experiences possible.

  7. Well, I don't use it on Win10, so I guess I'll not use it on my phone even harder.

Any enterprise users out there? Wondering if they will make you use Edge for enterprise apps (like IE6 from years ago). Since it just came out, assuming this would not be the case yet.
I'm starting a new job soon with a company phone - curious to see what I can/can't do with it.

I have had it on my iPhone for a few months now trying it out. It works really well and is actually faster on some sites than Safari or Chrome. Unfortunately there is really no pull for anyone to move to it. Unless it can get on par or surpass Chrome on sync features and extension parity. No one will care.

Not sure how it's faster than Safari when it is just reskinned Safari.

What do you mean now? It has been available for months and I have been using it, exclusively on my Sony Xperia XA1. Firefox is slower and I will not touch that Google thing to save my life. (It is disabled.)

Hey Microsoft, we don't need edge on ios/android to download other browsers.

On Samsung phones, the Samsung browser is really decent and integrates well. I have no idea why I'd even try edge. Hell, I tried FireFox on it, which I love on the PC, but it was uninstalled rather quickly. I wager IPhone users feel very similar about Safari.

^^ this. all browsers on iOS are a bad joke. Apple does not allow 3rd party rendering engines, so really you're getting a wrapper around webview or whatever they call it. basically pick the least invasive/creepy one - likely Firefox.

and i thought i read a while back that IE on Android where the DO allow 3rd party browsers....that MS decided to shovel webkit/blink into it instead. so really Firefox is the only mainline browser that really is the browser you think you are getting

But why use Chrome, if you do not want to use Google Crud? (Play Store and YouTube are the only Google stuff I use intentionally.)

Finally available? I've been using Edge on my Android for weeks.

I'll be honest... I just had to get rid of my Windows 10 phone... I loved it. I hate Google as a company but I decided to get an LG V30+.. I was pretty happy to replace all of the Google Apps with Microsoft ones.. What's funny is the Microsoft apps are better on Android than they were on WP.

NO, you DO NOT have to install Cortana... I talk to my phone enough... Don't need an assistant too.

Edge is MS attempt at putting out a modern browser, but frankly... they really should just GTFO of the browser industry and focus on that catastrophe they call an operating system. Shit is whack.
Apple is making great additions to MacOS, Safari isn't one of them.. The newest Firefox... I was a die-hard Firefox fan for many years making use of Firebug in my job, but Chrome just works better.

Companies should face facts, Google won the browser wars a long time ago. We don't need 4 browsers...5(sorry Opera).

I could say we don't need 3 operating systems either but honestly each of them really does serve a purpose.

You want a well designed system that works flawlessly and easily within it's own ecosphere? Look no further than Apple.
How about playing the latest GPU intensive games and because you like to build your own systems, Windows is a great product that will handle whatever configuration you throw at it.
Want to code, hack, work, be a 1337 badass ... get a Linux box.

Though... while I am a fanboi and ugh, this is no way influences the following statement :cautious:, I would just suggest everyone who isn't a gamer purchase a MacBook pro with an upgraded SSD and just toss Windows and Linux on their own respective partitions and then you can have it all.

Hmm... If no-one uses Edge in computers, who will want this on their phones?

Besides, they may install Windows 10 update assistant without you knowing, and the next time you power on your phone it'll have Windows 10 ;)

I'm not an Edge fan at all, in fact I only use it to install Chrome on my PC. I have no desire to use it on my phone whatsoever.

Doesn't Microsoft know that people can install Chrome and Firefox without their web browser on smart phones?

I guess it has to be handed to Microsoft, they can laugh at themselves. The most self-irony launch in history of computing.

Photoshopped meme. In the original, the robots purpose was to serve butter for Rick's pancakes.

Finally. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting to avoid this product on other platforms.
I played briefly with it on android, just to check out the "continuous browsing experience" from Windows 10, but I think I spent more time uninstalling all the stuff it sprayed onto my phone than I did actually using it.
Will take another look at it in a year or two, if they haven't given up by then.

Dolphin was aight, but I have not used it in years. I honestly don't use my phone enough for anything outside calls and texting with the occasional GPS for me to worry about things.

You'd better not go to sites with graphic or offensive content using Edge or Bing...

Microsoft updated its Terms of Service and some of the vagaries leave one wondering what happens if you use a Microsoft product or one of their services, i.e., Office 365 subscription, Bing, Edge, etc., to lookup and visit a p0rn site or publish a white supremacists manifesto using Word...

Gizmodo brought up the potential issues of the TOS updates in reference to the impact on the Xbox community.

Oh, so you mean, just out of the blue, they did this just because they can? Or perhaps, it is in response to the stupid laws that make the provider responsible for the customers behavior?:eek::confused:
