Mass Effect: Andromeda

I really hope bioware fixes the animations. Is it even possible for them to fix at this point?

It is, but I doubt they will. It would be a lot of work at this point. Now, they might have fixed them as the trial could be and likely is a different version of the game. It installs separately from the preloads of the real game. This is the same way things were with ME3. ME3's demo had worse textures and some of the animations were a little rougher in the demo if I recall correctly. Now things didn't improve immensely in the final version but there was improvement. Its possible that the ME:A trial is based on an older build. I'd bet on a day one patch and a Game Ready driver for ME:A on Monday.

Assuming the retail version is this rough, the only thing BioWare would likely ever fix would be the animations on the main / prominent characters. You won't see them address all the animations everywhere. It would take far too much time and effort to resolve those problems with almost no pay off.

In my opinion, Andromeda's scope was potentially a bit too ambitious and the quality of the game suffered for it. I think it could be the best game in the series if they learned from their previous mistakes. A lot of the types of animation issues we had in previous games are gone such as the weapon clipping through bodies in cut scenes and what not. A lot of the game's existing design does indicate BioWare took many criticisms to heart and made adjustments to how they built this one. Again, I think they had to build too many assets and characters which took too much time. It doesn't look like BioWare did any motion capture work to base the animations on which seems evident here. That process takes a long time but usually pays off. This is why these characters don't animate naturally at all.

And that really sums up the game's visuals nicely. It's one of the most gorgeous game ever made but falls short whenever you see a human who isn't in their armor. The Asari chick above seems to have ok facial animation (better than most anyway) but her movements are so badly out of sync its comical. She reminds me of those old Kung-Fu movies with the bad English dubbing.
This 100%.

It's very strange to me how a games world can look so good and the player models look so shitty. The armor is nice looking, though. And I think it's cool when you can see them sweat through their helmets.

It could very well be that the character animators were inexperienced with the engine and tools, or just inexperienced. It may also be that you had a handful of animators working on animating dozens if not hundreds of models. EA's famous for their tight deadlines and this game's size and scope made a 5 year development window seem rather tight for what it is. I can easily imagine the animators not having the time to get things right. That's not an excuse, this shitty animation shouldn't be so prominent in any AAA title but that's what we've got. At least in the trial version. As I said, its possible that the only thing cleared as "stable" for a trial version was an older build of the game. At least that's what I am hoping for. While I get to keep my trial saves, I may just start over so I can analyze the game in more detail and go through it more methodically than I have in the trial.

Ultimately, I'm having enough fun with the game that it's a win in my book so long as the ending doesn't suck balls. It's just a shame that the animations and some character models are so bad. The faces and models of the earlier games were much less complex but did a better job of looking "human" than these do. That's really sad.

To people that are currently playing, Dan_D and others. Are you being completionist like? I.E Doing everything you can, collect, talk etc

I've watched the first 3 hours of the game and from what I have observed these people are flying through the story and really only focusing on the main story line. For example, they are missing sub quests, or crates and other things they should be scanning, looting but run past them. This drives me crazy! Since we have the jet pack, there is more places to hide things and for us to discover.

I'm planning on being a completionist for this first 10 hour period. I get to download and install today when I get home (6 hours to go...) Not sure how far I will get, but want to make sure I sure I scan everything, loot everything and accomplish all the sub quests and plots that I can. I did it in ME3, I know I will want to do it in ME:A.

Thanks to everyone that has shared their experience thus far.

I am a completionist and I've been playing the game as I normally would.

I took image earlier and added an actual person to scale. it shows the size now is correct but people have fat faces.

I am a completionist, and I got everything I could in my 10 hours. All quests/side quests and mined/explored all solar systems too 100%. it took around 7-8 hours for me to do it. I mean on the first planet I was looking around for anything I could. So I did waste a lot of time.

BioWare as a Dev house has needed to move Mo-Cap for their main characters for a long, long time. It is synonymous with AAA at this stage and I'm not sure why they haven't. Much smaller Dev houses have done so, and if BioWare wants to keep their reputation for character development and story driven focus, this is the most natural step to do so. It is where the believability gets delivered.

I'm doing my best to reserve judgement until I actually play the game. Admittedly I am discouraged. The acting and writting were concerns I brought up after the first couple trailers. So to hear so many Previewers list these things as weak points, even "cringe worthy" is disheartening. I really want this game to succeed and for BioWare to redeem themselves after ME3's ending... which I understand isn't a hang up for everyone, but it removed any desire to replay any part of the series for me. This series is the closest thing to 'fanboy' I've ever gotten, so that was a bit gut wrenching. If this game ends up sucking, it won't take me long to move on. CD Projekt Red and Arkane have taken up the cause for me now.

I played a bit. Agree with dan. Not a terrible game but boy howdy thems some ugly folk! I think the skin textures bothers me the most.

The bullshit character models and art style have me shocked that someone actually signed off on this game at Bioware. How the hell could anyone look at this and think it looks good???? The people look absolutely hideous!!! What the hell. I am so sad that I paid money for this bullshit.

the optimist in me wants to believe that they didn't focus on the character models/animation so they can put all their efforts into crafting an amazing story!!...yes!...

Umm the 10 hour trial has a content gate, so you can't possibly have done everything.
I also watched a preview last night from a reviewer who played 20 hours and they implied they hadn't even scratched the surface of the game yet.

Bioware’s Ian Frazer has clarified that the Mass Effect: Andromeda Day 1 patch is included in the trial version of the game on Origin Access...Responding to a question about the animations which have raised a few eyebrows he says “that ship has sailed” but there will be more patches later...however, he doesn’t specify what will be in them so we have no idea if and when they will get sorted...

I was just coming to post this you Ninja. :ninja:

Yeah. Going to play the demo and wait on the fixes. Mods or patches. Please let a miracle happen.

I did everything the game let me do. I mentioned earlier in this thread there is a point the game stops you from going further in the story line. What it doesnt prevent you doing is the side quests available to you, the strike team missions and exploring the only planet, and it also does not prevent you from getting 100% of the only 3 solar systems you can check out.

So yes I did do everything the game will let me. If you believe it or not. I don't care...I know that I cannot do anything else in the game until the release.

I've got Zelda to hold me over until my amazon physical copy arrives in the mail. ($47) Hopefully by then a patch or two is out that fixes some of the issues.

with Prime your Amazon copy will arrive on Release Day

Play the "demo" the animations are horrid as well the eyes. Combat is pretty good though. Environment too. Give the game a try before you give up entirely. I am still not going to buy day one but I find the game playable.

I'm not sure if this means that the animations cannot be fixed at all or if it only means that it won't be fixed with the Day 1 patch...even more then the crappy character models they need to fix the weird movement of the characters...they walk so strange and goofy...did they really not see this during development or is it another case of we'll release the game and fix it later with a patch

Just realized that Dinesh from Silicon Valley is the voice actor for Jarun Tann

real actor = Kumail Nanjiani

its hilarious that the game is being raked over the coals on these animations, I don't disagree because its 2017 and we should be passed these issues but if a game developer screws up they should be called out

Oh and how did we go from this to the awful shit we have now??? I want to punch everyone at Bioware in the throat.

mass-effect-2-miranda.jpg

Is Miranda really that much better looking than the females in ME: A? Her face looks fairly awkward in that picture and at several points in ME2 and 3 as well.

Actually, the skin textures are fine on the guys I've seen so far. The women either have no makeup or horrible makeup. That's something we might be able to fix through modding. Unfortunately, while I could do it in Unreal Engine based games I haven't any idea how or if we can do it in Frostbite based games.

As I've said, they won't fix them. Ever. If they ever touch them it will only be for squad mates and some major NPC's. The rest of the Galaxy be damned.

Absolutely, all the characters were better looking than they are now in ME: Muppet edition. It's so bad I am at the point where I almost can't play the game. They are so awkward and ugly. Not to mention the terrible animations.

has the damage been done?...is Andromeda destined to flop or at the very least disappoint now?...the entire internet is filled with meme's and gif's mocking the animations...I'm still going to buy but I'm thinking about waiting till the first patch or 2 to begin playing

I am angrily forging ahead through the trial and I do enjoy the game play, exploration, etc. Every time there is a cut scene I am filled with anger again however.... it's hard man lol

anyone playing this on a 4K HDR set with Dolby Vision (better version of HDR10)??...I'm curious how it looks as this is the first game to support Dolby Vision
