Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

eh for the caster classes imo the Mantis is better once you get to level X its MUCH lighter then ether of the Widows

why would you need a sniper rifle for a caster class? I don't even fire my weapon if i'm playing as a caster.

Asari Adept / Vanguard
or in single player Stasis + sniper rifle is HAX mode
any way you can get Stasis its freaking hax they even nerfed the cool down on it right after launch too used to be 9sec now its 12 and its still OP as hell
add me on Origin and ill play some MP with you

Speaking of difficult battles, I was wondering if any of you had a hard time with the final battle on Eden Prime (in order to release Javik from stasis)? I played it on hardcore with an infiltrator and had a hell of a hard time. They throw a bunch of cerberus soldiers at you with a giant mech at the end. Had to replay half a dozen times before I pulled it off. Just want to get an idea of where my skills are at this point...

I played Infiltrator on Insanity. What I did in that mission is go into the building on the other side of the bridge. I then just popped out, took headshots, and took cover again. Sometimes Cerberus would come find me, so I'd just cloak and melee. It took me a couple of tries to complete.

The worst thing you can do is let yourself get cornered. That mission makes it seem like you have to hold down the area where the stasis pod is, but that's dang hard whenever Cerberus targets you and actively tries to flank you.

Yup, I don't even really bother with a gun anymore when I use a biotic. I usually equip the Predator (the lightest gun) and fire it only when I'm waiting for my powers to reset. On gold and against Reapers, a pistol doesn't really do much anyway. It's biotic explosions or bust. Sometimes I'll stasis bubble the Marauders for my squad mates.

Speaking of "tough", the other night while doing my insanity runthrough (wasn't gonna but figured I've done it on ME1 and ME2 so might as well here), I entered a mission and somehow the game lost all my weapons except the pistol I had.

I sat there a moment at the start and thought about it. I couldn't recall anything so tough in the regular playthrough, and it was a nicely modded pistol, so what the hell. More of a challenge!

Yeah, that wasn't so bright of me it turns out. I forgot about the end part where in normal mode they toss like 2 Geth Primes at you, and in insanity they toss 4 at you.......and my 2 teammates spent most of the fight dead while I'm running around from cover to cover trying to whittle down 4 Primes with nothing but a pistol and Disruptor ammo.

Took me almost a half hour, but I did get it. Never again though. :p

Now if only the ending were as epic as that one fight. :D

I am on also on my insanity run and had that same exact thing happen to me last night. As an adept, I always carry a pistol and and a SMG but somehow I only had a pistol during that mission.

As for the Geth Primes, there are a bunch of geth spitfires (space gatling guns) laying around that you could have used.

the idea here is to be flexible, that's how you get cornered and squadmates die, when spending way too many cooldowns on the same enemies and losing focus. if you miss a combo or the damage is just shy of a kill you clean up with your weapons, that's what they're for.

I find it really strange that combat/casters here would play this way, the entire game is set up around the player maximising abilities of 3 squadmates, not just 1. the amount of damage you can do by controlling them directly is exponentially higher than just playing solo and letting them do their own thing.

I never found it as necessary to micromanage squadmates in ME. I do it some, sure, but nothign like I do in Dragon Age. Sometimes I wish ME squadmates could do all the work and I could just watch like in DA.

You dont really have to unless you're on the harder/hardest difficulties. They seem to manage fine on their own otherwise.

For me, I find it more fun to control my entire squad, adds to the RP element. Plus, it is fun as hell to use combo powers with your squad.

Finally unlocked Krogan Sentinel last night and they are a TON OF FUN! There's nothing quite as satisfying as headbutting a brute to death.

I only tried him out on Bronze- I always test unfamiliar builds there- and wrecked everything in site. My team would generally leave me alone on one half of the map while they covered the remainder.

Anyone have any tips on how to use one on Silver? I know I'll just die often if I continually rush into groups of enemies on that difficulty, but I also know his effectiveness is reduced if I can't get him into rage mode.

I did try to use them, but when you're constantly getting hit and it's interrupting the shot, the pistol ends up being more effective. :D

I'm done with ME3 at this point. It's going into a box likely to never get touched again and removed from my SSD for more important things like job resumes.

Only on hardcore and insanity do you actually need to manage them carefully. On normal you don't need to really do anything, but I sometimes manage them anyway to get through a section faster or to keep enemies at range by having a squad mate bust out another Black Widow or something.

I thought I was pretty good at the MP, then I started playing with Russians. Good Lord. They're on another level.

I'm almost always the top scorer when I play. Unfortunately almost no one ever plays on anything but the bronze challenge level and I rarely get in a group who can hold their own beyond the bronze challenge level. They don't understand the concepts of sticking together or remaining in a defensible position. They run and gun through the map and that rarely works for them. Sad part is I can handle a lot of the wave myself with a Black Widow from a defensible position with a good field of fire if one is available. I pull their asses out of the fire more often than not. Pretty sad actually.

donno if this was posted before

I've yet to unlock anything that great. No Black Widow, only M98 Widow II. For pistols I have Phalanx 1, Carnifex III, and Predator III.

I've unlocked several levels of the Disciple shotgun, but I never have any reason to use that. In fact, it seems the only type of gun I ever unlock with regularity is shotgun.

I also unlock a crap load of missiles, though very rarely get medi-gel.

Is there a way to adjust public matchmaking in MP? I hadn't played MP since the demo, so when I went in as a level 2 yesterday it took almost 10 different game lobbies before I found one where I wasn't kicked for my noob-ness. That's a little frustrating.

Once I did get into one I held my own quite well, thank you very much. Just wondering if there's a way to limit the matchmaking so you get paired with other players closer to your own level.

Yeah, you'll want bronze matches. The option is on the bottom of the quickmatch screen. I'm not sure if Bronze is default or not, but I think a lot of people come into Gold-level matches because they don't know that there's a difficulty setting. Also, people will kick you for all sorts of reasons. Vanguards get kicked a lot. Drell Adepts deserve to get kicked, frankly (if they use Reave -- they all do, basically). Finally, some people are just assholes.

I personally never kick anyone from Silver, but I kick people from Gold quite often.

Yeah, I've been trying to play on Bronze. Maybe I shouldn't be playing with my shiny BF3 soldier character?

I've seen that class get discriminated against some. I'm not sure why. I don't personally have the BF3 soldier, but I've seen where they get random votes from other players. Like I said, though, I don't personally vote against anyone unless it's a Gold match. Even then, I'd have no problem playing with a level 15 or level 16 BF3 soldier.

I only ever kick for a few specific reasons:
1) In Silver with N7 rating below 15 and character level under 12
2) In Gold with N7 rating under 20 and character level under 15

I'll play with anyone on Bronze- especially with my Krogan Sentinel. "It's okay- I'll take this half of the map, the rest of you stay over there."

The only other reason I'll either kick or leave a lobby is if someone is being obnoxious over VC.

Another sniper who thinks he is saving the world. If everyone was a sniper, nothing would ever even happen.

A team with all snipers can be rather effective, especially if at least one is an infiltrator.

On bronze I pretty much am. On silver, no of course not. You need a good team to make it through silver and gold challenges. But being good means that your often picking up slack for those who aren't.

Just started playing this last night and I'm loving it. I'm not much of a game critic, I play games to have fun ME series has been uber fun for me so this was a no brainer. I love what I see, which is more ME.

Don't want it to end :(

And for the most part Mass Effect 3 is an excellent game.

i received the N7 Valiant sniper rifle from the victory and commendation packs after operation Goliath. it's really freaking sweet. otherwise, i'm not a big fan of usin weapons at all. I just recently unlocked asari adept, though i'm sad to see they nerfed the cooldown on stasis.

my favorite and best class by far is the human sentinel that i play like a biotic user. no tech armor and just spamming biotic explosions. so far i do really well as long as people don't follow me and zero in on the warped enemies (preventing me from exploding things) i don't even fire my weapon. with my sentinel i almost never rank lower than 2nd place

Good news depending on how you look at it.

Let's just hope they can get it right this time. Interestingly enough, my take on the "preservation of the game's artistic integrity" is a comment I take to mean, they'll add on to it, but not change what was done. Hopefully they take the indoctrination theory and run with that. But whatever we get will likely take place after the endings and not before.

heh, just pretty much posted exactly that in the spoiler thread

Ugh, your one of those. This can work if you stay in a sniper's field of fire because they can help keep you from being overwhelmed. Most of the people I've seen who play this way die a lot. Many people treat the game as "run and gun" or "run and melee" which often gets them killed on anything but the bronze challenge level and even then they die more than they should. I swear most multiplayer games are filled with people who have never heard of a defensive position, supressive fire, field of fire, sticking together, etc. Which is odd because in first person shooters I tend to run and gun quite a bit because I'm good at it, though my KT ratio isn't that great. I do usually get more straight up kills than others. With Mass Effect 3, I play the multiplayer like I do the single player. I stick to cover when possible and melee only as a last resort. I pick the best defensive positions and stay to those only moving when I have to.

As a result I don't die very often. In fact on bronze I usually don't die at all and when I do it's on the last wave.

The valiant is one of the better sniper rifles in the game. That is aside from the Black Widow. The Black Widow is only slightly heavier but it does a considerable amount of damage comparatively. And the N7 Valiant is far more damaging than most of the other sniper rifles in the game save for the Javelin, M-98 Widow and the Black Widow. The Mantis may do slightly more or about the same but it's single shot where as the N7 Valiant holds three shots. I started using the M-90 Indra last night in single player just to try it out. Apparently it and the M-13 Raptor are more like assault rifles with increased accuracy and a scope already attached with two free mod slots. They don't give you that satisfying one shot kill with an exploding head, but you can keep guys at range with it. Add the concentration mod to it and the M-90 Indra is more effective than I ever thought it would be. Sadly though, I really liked the M-29 Incisor in ME2 but in ME3 it sucks. They made it even weaker it seems. Still good for shields, but you don't encounter shields often on normal mode and in the harder modes, it lacks the punch you need to do anything but wear down shields.

I haven't started ME3 yet, but I already know how I'm going to feel going in. Between them backpedaling on this and cutting bait on both Dragon Age games after promising so much DLC, I'm not seeing Bioware as all that credible anymore.

Actually, a two player sub-team split is really good. A Vanguard and an Adept or Krogan (Soldier/Sentinel) do really well as one team and a Infiltrator and Engineer do really well as another. Splitting up helps keep one spot from getting overrun by EVERY enemy. If things do get dicey, you all just fall back to one another. The infil, adept, and vanguard can all immediately help a teammate in peril from nearly anywhere on the map.

And for the most part Mass Effect 3 is an excellent game.

Thats how I feel so far, time will tell how I feel by the end. I am however quite vested into the lore so I have to finish the fight.

A Salarian Infiltrator in the hands of a competent player is just about unstoppable, even on Gold. I don't consider myself elite like the Russian players, but even still, I typically only ever die with a Salarian Infiltrator when I go revive someone. Plus, energy drain is one of the best powers in the game.

I'd say a Salarian Infiltrator can be sucessful against any of the enemies. Adepts, while being great against Reapers, can easily struggle against Geth. I don't personally like Krogan as you have to run around too much with them, but I like having them on my team. They're funny.
