Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

Garrus always has good stuff. He's had good lines in all three games.

That he does. Though overall Javik is probably flat out the most ammusing character in this game.

"Garrus is an excellent marksman. He would be even better with four eyes." - Javik.

Javik is a special character to be sure. Great lines. A hell of a great addition to the series.

On replay, I'm going to be as different as possible. That means it's time to bring out the Queen Bitch of the Galaxy Shepherd. ;)

I haven't yet managed to bring myself to go the paragon route. It wasn't until my femshep got her renegade scars back in full effect that I felt properly at home in ME3 (thankfully it didn't take long).

So is there a simple way to change the FOV without messing up cut scenes yet? I bought the game, but the default FOV make me claustrophobic. At the time I bought it, all the FOV fixes were either overly complicated or messed something up.

No.

http://widescreengamingforum.com/fo...ions/20716/mass-effect-3-retail-quick-fov-fix

Still your best option by far. It's really easy to use and certainly better than nothing.

For example, if I press num 5 pad it gives me fov 90 and if I need default fov for certain cutscenes I press num pad 1. Couldn't be easier.

There were a couple good one liners in ME2. Always get a laugh during the Miranda loyalty mission when her and the Asari captain are talking shit. The Asari tells Miranda, "I'm just waiting for you to finish getting dressed. Does Cerberus really let you whore around the Normandy in that outfit"? Jack responds "I like her. Are we still recruiting"?

Then after you pick up Garrus and he asks how he looks after his facial injury. Shep tells him he's always been ugly. Garrus says "guess its only fair. Everybody was always hitting on me and ignoring you."

I came across that Miranda line by chance. I was speed-playing to get a proper ME2 save before ME3, and just happened to select one of the left dialogue options.

One of the things I like about Mass Effect is that there are so many gems. Some cheesy stuff, sure, but you can generally tell the writers know what they're doing. I also think the writers typically have done a good job of anticipating the audience, with the exception coming from the ending in ME3.

totally disagree...interesting chracter based on his history and importance to the ME universe Yes but amusing not really...he has a few funny lines in the game but overall he is way too serious and bitter towards other crew members (Legion and EDI in particular)...he is not a fan of synthetics

Garrus would probably get my vote for most amusing ...even EDI had funnier lines

13 hours in, still having a lot of fun.

SPOILERS!!!

There is some forced dialogue in this version, more-so than I recall in ME2. Particularly the conversation between you, Jack and the students when you save the class of adepts. That is some of the worst dialogue I have heard in the series so far, really really bad. Other than that, it has been pretty good.

Also, I notice myself chosing renegade options far more often than I typically do. My character was around 95% paragon up to this point. I am not sure if I am a little different or if the choices are simply more obvious. If people are in-fighting or other races are arguing, I am going to tell them to shut the fuck up and get along because the entire universe is at stake. Not to mention future civilizations and the ones after that. Do whatever it takes to meet your ends.

It also seems that Shepherd is falling apart a bit in this game. I think the dreams match his character. He has given up everything to stop the Reapers and warn the universe. Now, they are here and people are still fighting and not acting fast enough. Its bound to wear on him.

If other people are similar, we are all basically acting like the Invisible Man. With the exception that we are fighting for everyone instead of just humanity. Whatever it takes to reach our goals.

I am also playing on the insanity mode. I was going to just play on normal or hard but I saw that my ME2 playthrough was on insane so I figured I would give it a shot. Being Sentinel gives you a lot of breaks since you can usually cloak out of really bad situations. It can be annoying dying to a single grenade toss though.

I would say that I am about halfway through, maybe less. I will try to do every quest possible.

"Garrus is an excellent marksman. He would be even better with four eyes." - Javik.

I like when he talked about the Salarians, expressing surprise that they've evolved so much.

Javik: "The lizard people evolved?"
Liara: "I believe they're amphibians"
Javik: "They used to eat flies"

LOL!

I've got a question. I can't decide whether I should be hoarding money or not. I'd like to buy some gun mods but I'm also saving up for that spectre sniper rifle so I've been holding off spending credits. Do credits begin to flow later or should I conserve?

I ended up with more credits than I cared to spend. If you want something, buy it. I was a vanguard though, so none of the Spectre weapons were really the "best" for my character (I bought the shotgun anyway to just test it out). The Graal Spike Thrower is a fantastic weapon and free.

pistol works great but the best is the N7 SMG + barrel extension + more ammo + AP ammo

Gotta say I'm surprised how much I find myself using pistols. Besides being surprisingly useful (decent damage per shot, good firing rate, and excellent clip sizes), they're just flat out fun to shoot. But, I'm still relatively early in the game so maybe I haven't found good guns in other categories yet. I'm an infiltrator so I also carry a sniper rifle but the first 2 are not very useful. The viper is weak, the mantis' firing rate is much too slow.

On that note, I'm kind of disappointed in my choice to be an infiltrator. The cloaking ability isn't as useful as you would think and the only offensive power that I like is incinerate. I'm also not crazy about the ammo powers (disruptor/cryo). I was a soldier in ME2 and wanted to try something different, but I do miss that adrenaline power.

What class/loadouts do you guys prefer? Any of you enjoy being infiltrators?

upgraded Mantis is only bested by the widow when upgraded
and in mp i REALY like Mantis better since its MUCH lighter then the widow too

Vanguard is CRAZY fun. Infiltrator is a close second though, probably tied with Adept.

An upgraded heavy pistol with scope (carnifex) is about as good as any weapon in the game if you're also using biotics or tech.

Also, I played Infiltrator for the first time ever in ME3. I didn't like the "bullet time" that slows down your shots. Though, I thought the game was pretty doable on Insanity with the infiltrator. It's pretty easy to just run past all the enemies, shoot them from behind, and advance. This also keeps enemies from excessively (seemingly?) respawning.

I had planned to try an Adept, but I've put any future playthroughs on hold.

I'd planned on replaying all three as an adept, but I find the series to be a bit depressing. I'm not ready to devote another 100-120 hours just yet.

I'm also hoping DLC gets released soon.

it's pretty much the only class I really enjoyed playing through the whole series, first run through every chapter has always been with infiltrator. you're a mix of tech and combat so treat it like more of a tactical class vs run n gun, and the rewards are pretty huge. if you still prefer run n gun it can still be effective with the right gear and squad, berserker style is very effective with good cloak timing + best single shot melee damage in the game, and if you like to snipe then you have the best damage in the game period. all of this revolves around cloak/disrupt/freeze timing for the massive damage bonuses, use these as finishing moves along with detonation combos (chill + incinerate basically turns it into an aoe cryo blast) at any distance.

disruptor + cryo is also the best ammo combo imo, since this equips you to deal with any situation. both of them are like free perma stun for all your weaps and possibly the entire squad, that constantly buys you extra time to set up killshots or detonate combos. disruptor excels vs shields/barriers and especially synthetics, and can overload the weaps of any shooter mobs once leveled up a bit. cryo rips through armor/health (even better than warp imo because of the chill effect), you got bonus damage vs armor and anything unprotected gets snap frozen within the first few shots. incinerate is the best anti-armor and mob control in the game, since it strips both armor and health at the same time, level this up to aoe and you got free stun + dot for mob and regen control.

not as much of a class for solo players especially on higher difficulty, it really shines with combos so ideally you would want to manage your squad powers manually. the thing I like about it is you could play as point man or hang back all game and still be just as effective, it's the "in between gunner" that it's weak at, so choose a proper squad for suppression and position play (combat/techs for solo and biotic/techs for tactical). combo detonations and damage bonuses are much more versatile in me3, so there's many ways for you to maximise your damage with this skillset, it's vital to make openings for each other in order to get the most out of your damage. all synthetics and cerberus engineers (they're basically building turrets for you all game) are completely owned by this class with disruptor + sabotage, so like half the game becomes trivial already.

Garrus has a few, he usually does. Garrus is certainly one of my favorite characters, but I didn't find him as amusing as Javik. EDI was pretty funny at times. I'll grant you that one.

My son bought ME3 last night. He says it's pretty much epic.

We never played the first two in the series......

To get the most out of this should I start at the beginning?
I think I know the answer already.....I'm thinking yes for the full story and I would guess the other games are pretty solid as well?:D

I like the infiltrator class as well. However I still prefer soldier above all others. They aren't dependent on powers. Just shooting. They carry more weapons than everyone else does. The only thing they have some trouble with is dealing with adversaries which have barriers. But if you bring a biotic squad member with you, or you equip yourself with warp ammunition and a sub-machine gun, then you can handle anything pretty easily. The sniper concentration mod also gives you time dilation similar to what the infiltrator has when looking through the scope of a weapon. And because the soldier doesn't rely on power recharge time as much as other classes do, you can carry the bigger more punishing weapons. And with the soldier, your need to manage your squad mates is minimized compared to other classes. Even on higher difficulty settings.

I don't use cry ammunition. I tend to use disruptor on synthetics and incindiary on organic targets. The latter causes them to stand up and panic which gives me an opportunity to drop them with a head shot, and disruptor takes out shields or stuns synthetics.

finding the GX12 thermal pipe at the Citadel was a PITA...the name of the item is totally different...after my 10th or so visit and looking everywhere I decided to look online for the location...no wonder I couldn't find it

if you use your biotic powers a lot, weapon selection barely makes a difference as most any weapon is fine...I purchased the upgraded versions of my main weapons (the 5 series) but they really are secondary to me as I love playing as an Adept...Singularity, Warp etc are way more powerful then any gun

I don't get the same satisfaction out of the combat using biotics. I've always been a gun guy. In games like Age of Conan, I hate magic users. I never use anything like that. Always fighters of some kind for me.

Also, you can simply buy the thermal pipe from the spectre requisitions terminal in the spectre's office or you can get it from spectre requisitions on the Normandy.

if you use only guns doesn't that make some of the higher level enemies very difficult?...Geth Prime and others with barriers etc?...with biotic powers they are much easier to deal with (the Overload biotic power pretty much eliminates any barriers/shields with 1 hit)

as far as the GX12 pipe...yes you can buy it either at the Citadel or from the Spectre Requistions but my point is that the name of the item is not the same as the item in your Journal...it's not called the GX12 pipe when you buy it but instead something like E-Gel

Totally agree. Its much more fun lining up a good head shot thru a scope it firing a pistol rapidly into a bad guy than throwing some blue glowing blob at them.

I always play as a soldier and use no biotics. However I do always take at least 1, preferably 2, biotics as my squad. Samara and Jack can sure take a lot of heat off of you in some situations.

I'm the total opposite...there are tons of straight forward first person shooters out there that its fun to play something in a different way...same with Skyrim where I always go for the magic character versus straight up warrior

I didn't even know biotics could be so fun until trying it on the multiplayer.

I wish I could unlock the Falcon. That gun looks pretty fun to use.

Speaking of "tough", the other night while doing my insanity runthrough (wasn't gonna but figured I've done it on ME1 and ME2 so might as well here), I entered a mission and somehow the game lost all my weapons except the pistol I had.

I sat there a moment at the start and thought about it. I couldn't recall anything so tough in the regular playthrough, and it was a nicely modded pistol, so what the hell. More of a challenge!

Yeah, that wasn't so bright of me it turns out. I forgot about the end part where in normal mode they toss like 2 Geth Primes at you, and in insanity they toss 4 at you.......and my 2 teammates spent most of the fight dead while I'm running around from cover to cover trying to whittle down 4 Primes with nothing but a pistol and Disruptor ammo.

Took me almost a half hour, but I did get it. Never again though. :p

Now if only the ending were as epic as that one fight. :D

I almost always bring one biotic with me on a mission. However I never bring two. I prefer to have another solid damage dealer like Garrus, Ashley, or Zaeed. (Depending on the ME game we are talking about here.) There are some specific missions where other skills sets are more beneficial like Tali's recruitment mission on the harder difficulties. A biotic is absolutely unnecessary on that and would almost be a liability on that mission.

Got it the other day. Last night I unlocked the Black Widow. The only sniper rifle I'll ever need.

eh for the caster classes imo the Mantis is better once you get to level X its MUCH lighter then ether of the Widows

Ahh don't play 3 until you have played 1 and 2. They are must plays first I say.

1 is somewhat painful, the ending is absolutely awesome though. 2 is still very very playable and quite excellent.

ME1 is still my favorite even with its flaws, though we'll see if that changes after I finish ME3 which I'm loving so far. I would absolutely start with ME1 and go right through the trilogy for someone who hasn't played any of them yet. Consider yourselves lucky, I wish I could go back and start playing the ME series from scratch. It's almost like watching Star Wars for the first time.

You know what the best DLC would be, easily worth $20 or $25?

ME1 redone using ME3's game mechanics. Keep the voice acting and touch up the graphics a little - but use ME3's inventory/skill system etc.

That would make it A LOT more fun to play, and I'd be happy with ME3. :)

Thanks for the info on infiltrators, maybe I just haven't figured out how to best utilize its' strengths. On the incinerate power, on the 4th upgrade slot do you recommend expanding its AOE to 2 meters or increasing its damage to 540? I was leaning towards 2 meters but not sure...

Also, which upgrade path(s) do you believe are least important and therefore spend the least talent points on?

Speaking of difficult battles, I was wondering if any of you had a hard time with the final battle on Eden Prime (in order to release Javik from stasis)? I played it on hardcore with an infiltrator and had a hell of a hard time. They throw a bunch of cerberus soldiers at you with a giant mech at the end. Had to replay half a dozen times before I pulled it off. Just want to get an idea of where my skills are at this point...
