All that tease about the new interface on that phone and no new iPod. Yea, the Apple TV is cool and all, but frankly, Jobs over sold what he had because there wasnt much.

Dont get me wrong, the new phone is great, but you have to get Cingular service and its bloody expensive.

I think Apple really blew an opportunity with the exclusive deal with Cingular. I was drooling before I saw that.

If they had sold them unlocked or with multiple carriers, iPhones would fly off the shelves. As it is, they'll still sell well.

I'm a little disappointed in the price point though...$500 for a 4 GB. That's ps3 territory.

for $300 w/ contract (4GB), I might place an order today.

Yeah that ended up being a major, major disappointment.

Agreed. The Apple TV should do more than just stream iTunes content. The iPhone should be way cheaper and should be on more than just Cingular. What a huge disappointment IMO. Not even a whisper of Leopard or a (rumored) 12" MBP. Wow, just wow. I hope Leopard isn't pushed back or something.

Yea, all that hype for the Apple TV (which is stupid compared to the same price xbox 360 which has the media center deal AND plays games) and some piece of shit $600 phone that I cant use anyways because im in a verizon contract.

Total letdown.

If they supported the largest carrier (Verizon), I would be all over it like flies on shit. Right now I'm a verizon customer and I'm elgible for a new phone (Currently have the i730 PDA Smartphone) in June.

So yeah, I'm a sad panda.

I don't mind the contract, provided that they cater it to your own carrier.

I don't know where they come with Cingular being the best and largest... http://www.cellular-news.com/story/18056.php, they should have supported the larger carriers. Cingular must be really getting a nice push... I think cingular is running to the bank while apple doesn't realizle that they could have sold so many of these phones that it would make the PS3 and Wii look like a joke on the waiting lists.

I still say its impressive. Remember this is just generation 1.0 Lets see how things look a few months down the line.

The added the new Airport Base Station to the store, with 802.11n.

EDIT: Too slow on the draw, heh.

You know, for the price of an Apple TV, I think I'd rather spend more and get a Mac Mini. Of course, I would have to be able to get component out on it.

how could they make the phone less expensive...be realistic and reasonable here. The closest thing cingular has is the 8525 at $450-500, and it is no where near as innovative or functional as the apple phone appears to be.

And leopard is due in spring, which means as late as may, why are you worried about it not showing up in early January

and yeah, disappointing keynote. 2 products that won't be available for months, one on the expensive side and the other is limited use :(

Are the newer iMacs shipping with 802.11n?

The new Airport Extreme page says, "Most shipping Mac computers and some newer PCs with compatible cards include 802.11n, making them ready for the future."

I don't see an upgrade to the specs on the iMac hardware page.

EDIT: Never mind, it shows which ones do on the new 802.11n page.

No new Mac mini, no mention of Leopard (from what I can tell), no iLife 07', new new cinima displays, no 12" Macbook Pro.

Tickle me unimpressed.
(though I did fap at the thought of the new iPhone)

EDIT: @ Macnet: All current Macs (with the exception of the Mac mini) ship with 802.11n.

While I dig the iPhone, I expected the pricing to be outlandish, and that is essentially what happened. Sure, it's feature-rich, gorgeous and cool, but $499 for what essentially equates to an iPod nano + phone with a multi-year contractual obligation to a carrier I have no interest in? I believe I'll pass.

Besides...a phone like this warrants serious consideration with respect to scratches. If Apple gives it the same treatment it gave 1G nanos, you may as well forget about it looking cool for longer than eight seconds unless you line your jean pockets with ultra-soft microfiber and remember to never, ever put so much as a penny or a pair of earphones along with it. I have to wonder if they're going to include a case ala iPods.

Wouldn't most of you rather have a nice, sleek Apple-designed phone with basic functionality that could be bought sans-contract for a couple hundred bones? All I want is something that can make and receive calls and text messages with a nice interface that slides into my pockets with glorious ease.

Apple TV seems like an okay product, but I'm not terribly thrilled about the price. Seems a tad excessive.

I'm so excited...

8gb can hold like, 4 movies, which I can watch 2 of before a recharge... And pay 809$ CAD for it.

Oh, also, I can only use it when I Get into a Cingular wireless zone (ie, out of my country).

Apple TV? Great!!! Now I can watch all the things I Don't download from iTunes! Oh wait... No I can't... Humm.

fuck.

EDIT: The new Airport is VERY sexy though.

maybe the cost of them settling a lawsuit with Cisco is built into the price of the phone :-D

same. I'm not switching to cingular. It's now a niche product, when it could take over the phone market.

-verizon and cingular are about the same size, depends which way the wind is blowing to figure which one is larger at any given time
-(not saying that cingular doesn't do it, cause they do. verizon just does it more) verizon constantly loads crap firmware on phones and messes up functionality a lot
-probably the biggest reason that they went gsm instead of cdma is the world market. If they made the phone for verizon, they'd have to make another model with significantly different internals to sell to europe and some of asia
-cdma radios are not as compact as their gsm counterparts, and usually have worse battery life (a good example of this is the motorola razr- the gsm version is rated at 7 hours of talk time whereas the verizon verion is rated at a mere 3.3 hours...and the verizon version is thicker)

Apple is the kind of company that would have a phone deal with Cingular...and then leave the phone unlocked. Or put the unlock code on the back of the phone. Jobs isn't dumb. He wants to change the world with this, and I'll be VERY surprised if he tries to do ti by making everyone in the world use Cingular. Cingular will be the only ones selling and supporting it, but Apple is selling it too.

With no other updates, no announcement of iLife '07, etc., I'm kinda iffy on getting a new iMac now. I was hoping to get enough of an update to either take the plunge or stick it out a few more weeks.

Yeah, I know Steve's been busy with the iPhone, but is it really that hard to put the C2D in the Minis?

^^ they made no announcment before they did it with the iBooks. Expect that the reason its not mentioned here is that its not really 'Macworldly' enough an announcement. They'll just do it.

Yeah, most of that stuff is done spur of the moment it seems.

Question for you all...

Do they usually announce new ipods at kenote?

when will the phone be available for purchase? i just checked the apple store and it wasnt there....also looked on cingular and nothing. i am a cingular customer and havent upgraded my phone in 2 years....was looking at the 8525 but id rather get this instead.

ah u beat me to it....was going to say i found this on the main page at apple.com "This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained."

June! :( thats such a long time from now :( :(

June. They need to get FCC approval and wanted to announce it before the somewhat public FCC process.

Same boat, I'm glad none of the Cingluar stores in my area had any for sale for the last month or so....now I'll have to wait till June when this thing gets released.

That's what I was thinking, but usually they'd be for sale already at this point. Apple Store still showing old Minis.

so lemme get this straight. they announced a new widescreen iPod...that also happens to be their new phone? im confused...

No, they announced the iPhone which essentially has full iPod functionality built into it.

While this is MAY be true, Cingular is the only company working with Apple on support for the iPhone. As of right now, they're the only company that supports Apple's new voicemail interface. So, it may come unlocked, and it SHOULD work with T-Mobile (GSM + EDGE technology), but as far as the ability to use every little feature, I doubt that will go too far.

No 12" MBP? No update to the Mac Pro? No iLife 07? No iWork 07?? What a disappointment. I've been holding off on buying a Mac Pro in the hope that there would be a refresh, and that I could buy it with iLife 07 on it. Man.

We all kinda knew about the iPhone, and he already mentioned the iTV at the developer's conference.

I am......sorta.......underwhelmed. :(

No, they announced the iPhone which essentially has full iPod functionality built into it.

saying the same thing two different ways :p it's a mobile phone/ipod/pda all rolled into one...my guess is that being a mobile phone is its primary purpose.

rofl...this is true. cisco owns the trademark. wonder what they can name it...

From CNN:

There was some question as to whether Apple would be able to use the iPhone name for the device. But Cisco Systems (down $0.09 to $28.54, Charts), which owns the rights to the iPhone name, said Tuesday it expects to reach agreement with Apple later Tuesday on using the name for its device.

"Given Apple's numerous requests for permission to use Cisco's iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement today Apple intends to agree to the final documents and public statement that were distributed to them last night and addressed a few remaining items," Cisco said in a statement obtained by CNN. "We expect to receive a signed agreement today."
