From CNN:

There was some question as to whether Apple would be able to use the iPhone name for the device. But Cisco Systems (down $0.09 to $28.54, Charts), which owns the rights to the iPhone name, said Tuesday it expects to reach agreement with Apple later Tuesday on using the name for its device.

"Given Apple's numerous requests for permission to use Cisco's iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement today Apple intends to agree to the final documents and public statement that were distributed to them last night and addressed a few remaining items," Cisco said in a statement obtained by CNN. "We expect to receive a signed agreement today."

So basically, steve-o went ahead and used the iPhone trademark without notifying in writing cisco. hmm....lawsuit?

Not at all. Cisco clearly offered them a deal to use the name, and Apple just has to sign it and send it back, which they're clearly going to do now.

this post is probably redundant, but... boo yah iPhone naysayers!

too bad it's cingular.

8 gig for 600 fucking dollars? lolol.

Christ, I need 30gig for $600 please. Thats outrageous.

Keep in mind what ELSE it does, aside from being an iPod.

I paid $500 for something with 32mb by default. Along with a 2yr contract.

yeah, but in all honesty, the widescreen is crippled by the 8 gig. A $129 nintendo DS has a touch screen.

the camera is 2MP, thats pretty lowly in todays market. Not to mention the phone part doesnt support all neworks...

Are you serious? Try touching more than one point at a time on a regular touch screen. And try to find a good amount of cell phones (in the American market) with a 2MP camera.

show me a huge range of reasons you would NEED to touch more than one point at a time on a phone. I mean at the end of the day its a phone and a small media player, not an integral part of life.

There are several cool things that can be done with multiple fingers on a screen. Just the cool stuff on an Apple trackpad is testament to this.

And it's a phone. Several would argue that it IS an integral part of life, me being one of them.

With that said, I'm pretty disappointed with the device. Not with the phone itself, just everything around it (price, Cingular, contract, etc).

Text messaging is twice as fast.
Dual scrolling for info on the phone.

I am sure there are more, just a bit slow right now.

The HTC Wizard and many other smartphones sell for ~$600 with far less than ONE GIG of memory built in. To get the same functionality as the iPhone, I could buy a $600 smartphone & a 8gb Nano for $850 total and still have to carry two devices. Plus, I still don't have a 2mp phone.

Sony has had a couple of Walkman phones with comparable cameras. Guess how much they cost unsubsidized? $700-900 when they first came out. And still with less than 1gb of memory.

Ok, so let the guy who hates the camera in the phone drop.

I know on the website it says not "official," but with the Zune on the market, and always trying to stay top. How long will it take to see the iPhone?

Apple has just set the bar so high that people expect the world, and then some, from them. Agreed, Sony has some $700-900 phones, I just feel that people think it's overpriced because of the ipod's size and price.

Its basically a video Nano + Phone. $500 WITH a 2 year contract is very high. That puts the actual retail price of the device somewhere at about $700-$800. Its a device with a neat interface. Keep in mind that you then have an iPod that is using the battery power of your phone. I am not a big fan of convergence devices.

After a long conversation or 2, you are not going to want to use the iPod fuctionality to watch video or play music for fear that you are going to run down your battery for other calls. I think if it was just a PDA phone, without the iPod piece, it would be a more attractive device . . . and probably cheaper.

-8gb nano: $249
-2mp camera: we'll call it $50
-decent subsidized cell phone: $150
-decent pda: $200

grand total: $649+tax, and that's before considering that apple has integrated all of these things into one (seemingly) easy to use package. Seems very reasonable to me.

Mentioned this in the Front Page story, wonder why they didn't put 3G and Push to Talk on it which are two new features for Cingular this year?

Probably because they really didn't design this phone for Cingular. Cingular just managed to get the exclusive deal. I'm curious what went on in that deal. There are a number of GSM providers that would have loved to carry that phone.

Motorola Q: $99
iPod Nano: $249

I just think people were expecting those prices without the 2 year service agreements.

Motorola Q: $99
iPod Nano: $249

The Q has a lower resolution camera, no touch screen and has limited media integration (if any) with os x, not to mention it can hardly be considered a decent pda. And it goes for $199 on verizon's website with a 2 year contract.

EDIT: a better comparison would really be a cingular 8525 and a nano, about $650 with two year contract, and the integration and camera still aren't as good as the iphone.

I was just sayin...

I like the new phone. I really do. But I hate Cingular and $599 with a contract is too much money.

If there was a CDMA version and the 8GB version was $499, I'd give up my Q for it.

And you can get the Q for $99 if you sign up for Verizon's business plan. I know this because I did it. Yes, the Q has slightly lesser specs, but $500 more? C'mon Apple, I love your Kool-Aid but I'm going to have to pass this time.

SLIGHTLY LESSER SPECS? You know what, a Grand-Am has slightly lesser specs than a Corvette, but $30,000 more? I think I'm going to pass.

Rocketpig-

I understand what you're saying, and to some extent I agree that it'd be nice if the iphone was less expensive, but given that heavy duty pda phones usually go for $400-500, $500 and $600 is reasonable for a heavy duty pda phone with what's essentially a 4/8gb 5th gen ipod integrated into it.

And no, I don't consider the Q to be a "heavy duty" pda phone.

expecting? or hoping for?

Expecting, hoping... does it matter now? Personally, I was HOPING for it to be 600 bucks without a contract. Hell, I thought the Cingular exclusive thing was a total curveball, as in, I wasn't EXPECTING that at all.

Fair enough, but you can get a Treo 700 from Verizon for $249 right now.

You have to admit that Apple's pricing structure isn't even CLOSE to where everybody else is right now.

The product isn't close to where everybody else is right now either.

Which smartphone has 4GB of storage space for MP3s and videos and syncs to iTunes?

Which smartphone has an ambient light sensor to dynamically change the brightness?

Which smartphone has a proximity sensor to know when it's placed against an ear?

Which smartphone has a full-featured multi-window web browser that lets you instantly zoom in and out of web pages and scroll by sliding your finger?

Which smartphone has a 160dpi 3.5" screen?

Which smartphone has accelerometers and dynamically changes the screen orientation when placed on its side?

The iPhone is *so* far beyond every other device on the market right now it's ridiculous. I thought Apple would never introduce an iPhone because there was no way to make it simple and intuitive. I was obviously wrong as fuck.

yeah, apple is pushing it a little bit with prices with a consumer target market that's used to paying $300 tops for their phones.

However, while you say that apple's pricing isn't close to what anyone else has today, no one else out there has a product that's really close to the iphone today.

Assuming the iphine lives up to 70% of the hype that was laid out for it today, their relatively small price push will be more than worth it for consumers using the product.

I understand that the phone is very different than anything else out there, but is it worth that extra $300? Right now I'm inclined to say no, especially when it involves a forced switch to Cingular.

Unlock it with no contract for $499/$599 and I'd completely change my tune. But when you're going up against phones that offer similar functionality (though without the Apple panache), for half the price, I'm disappointed.

Treo 700 (which sucks) + 8gb nano = $500. So $100 premium for the newest shit with better specs and integration? Sounds like a total rip, you're right.

If Sprint had it, I would buy it. Easy as that.

I'm no Apple fan boy. I have an iPod Nano I got free with a bank account. That's the only piece of Apple gear I own.

But this is just *obscenely* awesome. I would plunk down that money on launch day if it didn't involve Cingular.

The Nano does not play movies and has a tiny screen. The iPhone also has a much larger screen than the Treo and is obviously more capable and provides a vastly better user interface.

That's worth $100 easy.

Again, you're including AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DEVICE into the price.

Put it this way:

Is 8GB of memory worth $350?

Please double check your sardonics sensor. :p

It's more than just 8gb of memory. The iPhone will have BETTER functionality and useability than a Nano. For people who are in the market for this sort of device, the iPod functionality is worth MORE than the Nano. Plenty of other phones have had mp3 playing capability, but it was always a stretch to consider any of them a serious replacement for an iPod. This is not the case with the iPhone.
