It's more than just 8gb of memory. The iPhone will have BETTER functionality and useability than a Nano. For people who are in the market for this sort of device, the iPod functionality is worth MORE than the Nano. Plenty of other phones have had mp3 playing capability, but it was always a stretch to consider any of them a serious replacement for an iPod. This is not the case with the iPhone.

I understand that. I still don't see it being worth that much money WITH a contract.

Besides, by the time this thing launches, the current phones we're pricing it against will be cheaper and newer, faster replacements will be sold in their current price market.

I understand that the phone is very different than anything else out there, but is it worth that extra $300? Right now I'm inclined to say no, especially when it involves a forced switch to Cingular.

Unlock it with no contract for $499/$599 and I'd completely change my tune. But when you're going up against phones that offer similar functionality (though without the Apple panache), for half the price, I'm disappointed.

I think that we can agree that the market will ultimately decide how much the iphone will go for (whether the innovation will equal the cost), not the goons that think they know what the market will take. For me, the price seems reasonable, partly because I've been with att wireless/cingular since early 2000, and also I'm used to paying more for phones because a) I get the nicer ones and b) I often buy them outright. That said, apple is targeting run of the mill consumers and not business professionals. They very well may have priced themselves out of their intended market by $100-150.

Also keep in mind that cingular is just as big as verizon, going with one or the other would have alienated an equal number of potential customers (except going GSM allows them to go to europe without changing the phone much, if at all).

In the 6 months or less lead time, you won't see any significantly different/better devices than what's available now. The phone + mp3 prices being compared are all including the contract, so that is nullified. Contract smartphone + 8gb flash DAP = similar cost to iPhone. Your lack of grasping the appeal isn't the iPhone's fault.

The projected Cingular lock in is the only sucky thing, and I'll only bitch about that when I see that there is actually no way around it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the phone at all. I think it's damned sexy and would probably end up sucking down more of Cupertino's Kool-Aid and buying one if not for the Cingular link.

But I still feel it's slightly overpriced. If Apple had even offered T-Mobile as a substitute carrier, I might feel differently. I just really dislike Cingular.

I'd also like to add that I'm bent that Apple didn't release an iPod using some of the cool iPhone screen tech.

Overall, I'm really disapointed about this MacWorld. Jobs spent two hours talking about products that we can't even buy.

That said, apple is targeting run of the mill consumers and not business professionals.

Most PDA phones (with those high prices) are targeted at business professionals. Targeting an expensive phone at regular consumers is questionable. Most regular consumers that would find an iPod/trick phone a really good idea are probably not the same people that would pay that much for a phone. I think your more of an exception than the rule.

A few more things maybe should've been updated/released, but damn, the iPhone is huge. Yes, everyone thought it was coming, but no one KNEW anything. All of our suspicions might give us less of a feeling of surprise, but that doesn't mean it wasn't monumental.

did you finish reading my post? the part where I said that apple may have priced themselves out of their target market by $100-150?

amen to that.

I hope this isn't a keynote trend Jobs started with the iTV.

"Listen everybody! We have this fabulous tech! Here's a demo! Look at how great it is!"

*crowd drools*

"Available to you in a short 18 months!"

*crowd yawns*

Oops, thats what I get for posting from work and switching windows. I skimmed. My appologies.

Yea, its pretty much a $300 component video adaptor (I'm still irritated they done sell a mini-DVI to Component video adapter, btw). You are almost better off looking for a refurb Mac Mini

Eh... I agree completely. But, it does something that 99% of the public doesn't know can be done easier (if at all) or cheaper. Just look how many iPods were sold last year... And how many users use the default earbuds because they can't notice/dont care sound quality differences...

This will follow the same trend. Who cares how much it costs, and what it's capabilities are... It's an Apple product, and it's the first major item to do what it does, without needing a slew of other components.

How many members of the (non Engadget reading) public know what a slingbox is?

Anyways, Here I come Microsoft! Zune for Arcy.

Damn...the iPhone is an incredibly sweet piece of electronics, but everything else is kinda "bleh"...:(

Was any information given on the new version of OS X? I'm looking at buying a Mac Book Pro but would rather hold off if the new update is gonna launch soon.

nope macworld basically sucked ass.

Anyone know the name of the song and the band for the track played in the new itunes advert on the keynotes? Sorry if this as already been asked and answered but i couldnt find it.

This thread is updating too fast for me to read it all.
But if you guys still don't know I just found out it does indeed have a slot for an SD card. And I do believe SD has 32GB cards out already.
:)

It won't. I can guarantee it.

Apple never puts any kind of card slots on their devices. Hell, even the MacBooks don't have any kind of card slot.

The product isn't close to where everybody else is right now either.

Which smartphone needs an ambient light sensor to dynamically change the brightness?

Which smartphone needs a proximity sensor to know when it's placed against an ear?

Which smartphone needs accelerometers and dynamically changes the screen orientation when placed on its side?

Cmon apple... I can rotate my phone 90 degrees to save about a hundred bucks.

i love it this year is going to be great, and I can't wait to count all the iphones I see get dropped in my every day activities.

yaya for parents who buy that shit for their spoiled kids.

Sorry....while it has its probs for sure umm... those features aren't.

Yes, they're not problems... But I could sure as hell live without them. I can honestly say that I've NEVER wished that my phone would change it's brightness depending on the lightning conditions...

Well seeing as the phone has PDA functionality and I read all my books on my pocket pc this is a feature that I would use.

I wish that all the time. I change my phone's brightness quite often. I *love* that it has that feature.

what about those of us that spoil ourselves  I'll drop and destroy as many iphones as I see fit, thank you very much :p

Seriously though- apple may have raised the overall amount parents spend on kids with ipods, but the iphone is gonna be too much for all but the top 20% or so of kids (rough guess). And you can (thankfully) count out the real youngins' cause they're too young to have mobiles in the first place :D

Yeah, the MBs don't have expansion slots. People who buy MacBooks don't really need one, and if they do, Apple wants them to buy a MBP. MBP has expansion slots, as does my Powerbook.

32gb? what? where? highest ive seen is 4gb.

think your a little bit wrong bud :) otherwise, ipod would be in deep dodo

Just finished watching the Keynote... I must say I applaud them for the "seemingly" seamless integration of all the different iPhone features. I say "seemingly" because most of the things he queued up were pretty much ready to go. The true test will be actually picking one of these up and playing with it in an Apple store. I think it's a good product, and may change the face of the mobile market as we know it. I for one am very interested to see what Cingular will charge for Internet access on this thing. Hopefully Steve took a close look at that. Remember back when the greedy RIAA folks balked at the .99 per song price and wanted more money to line their pockets? Steve said NO and kept it at .99. I hope he does something similar to keep the Internet access price down. Also, I think it's a very good thing that the iPhone will sense wi-fi and switch to that instead of burning up minutes on EDGE. I'm on T-Mobile, but not under contract so I'm gonna wait and see.

Now, as far as Macworld goes, I've said it several times today to friends, family, and other online communities. It BLOWS. Macworld has always been, up to this point, about Macs. No iLife 07? iLife 06 was introduced and available at last year's Keynote. No refreshes to the current Mac lineup? Shame on you Steve Jobs.

As for the AppleTv - I need something to sling media, not just iTunes stuff, to my bedroom downstairs. This thing has no tv tuner? Come on. I guess I'll be getting a Slingbox then.

i cant wait to play with one too!

its so great to get a phone for ANY OS that is 100% compatible with everything in the OS.

its built to work with osx, which is huge. Any phone ive ever had has had so much trouble syncing in XP, its not even funny. Ive also just stumbled on "Missing Sync" software, which could be a happy alternative for me to use a future WM5.0 smartphone with osx.

im really craving a small pda/phone.

Little off topic but should tie in with Mac World. I'm not a Mac user but it seems like apples updates stuff on a schedule so whats the approximate schedule for the OS update?

OSX 10.5 is actually delayed. When it was originally announced, which was prior to WWDC 2006 it was scheduled for a winter 2006 release. But most people overlook alot when it comes to apple.

Prior to this, i was looking at the 8525, but I'm glad they didn't have any in stock. Apparently you cannot buy one without an inernet service from cingular. Now, I have unlimited data on my phone now and its not too bad. The 3G network and their new PTT are their new flagship services so I imagine it won't be too bad price wise...speed wise on the other hand...SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

See, the real problem I think is that the decision by Apple to call the product the "iPhone" seems to have been a last minute decision.
It had to be.
This product is obviously a multi-function device. Look at the menu for instance. Phone, widescreen, internet etc.
Its not simply a phone but a do all device that actually does everything very well. So all these features are needed.

I woulda called this thing the "iGlobe" cause it reminds me more of a "global" from the tekwar tv show. All this thing needs now is wireless video calls. :)

There you go. I agree with this. I can't get over the fact, that... regardless of all the capabilities it's got. It's still a PHONE.

I own a phone, a pretty nice one (razr V3) that I got for 0 dollars with a 2 year contract...

I've got a laptop (campus wide Wifi) that can do everything else that the iPhone can.

It's awesome, and a great sign for things to come with the iPod, but it's just not for me.

If Apple were to release a chopped down version (without all the sensors and stuff) for 399, then I'd seriously consider it. To me, it's still a phone, and I expect some level of difficulty doing everything it does with ease.
