It's more than just 8gb of memory. The iPhone will have BETTER functionality and useability than a Nano. For people who are in the market for this sort of device, the iPod functionality is worth MORE than the Nano. Plenty of other phones have had mp3 playing capability, but it was always a stretch to consider any of them a serious replacement for an iPod. This is not the case with the iPhone.

I understand that the phone is very different than anything else out there, but is it worth that extra $300? Right now I'm inclined to say no, especially when it involves a forced switch to Cingular.
Unlock it with no contract for $499/$599 and I'd completely change my tune. But when you're going up against phones that offer similar functionality (though without the Apple panache), for half the price, I'm disappointed.
I understand that. I still don't see it being worth that much money WITH a contract.
Besides, by the time this thing launches, the current phones we're pricing it against will be cheaper and newer, faster replacements will be sold in their current price market.
In the 6 months or less lead time, you won't see any significantly different/better devices than what's available now. The phone + mp3 prices being compared are all including the contract, so that is nullified. Contract smartphone + 8gb flash DAP = similar cost to iPhone. Your lack of grasping the appeal isn't the iPhone's fault.
Jobs spent two hours talking about products that we can't even buy.
That said, apple is targeting run of the mill consumers and not business professionals.
That said, apple is targeting run of the mill consumers and not business professionals. Most PDA phones (with those high prices) are targeted at business professionals. Targeting an expensive phone at regular consumers is questionable. Most regular consumers that would find an iPod/trick phone a really good idea are probably not the same people that would pay that much for a phone. I think your more of an exception than the rule.
did you finish reading my post? the part where I said that apple may have priced themselves out of their target market by $100-150?
amen to that.

Ugh. Here's some questions about the AppleTV.

What a pile of crap. I don't even want that anymore. Thanks for a lousy MacWorld, Steve.
Yea, its pretty much a $300 component video adaptor (I'm still irritated they done sell a mini-DVI to Component video adapter, btw). You are almost better off looking for a refurb Mac Mini
Was any information given on the new version of OS X? I'm looking at buying a Mac Book Pro but would rather hold off if the new update is gonna launch soon.
This thread is updating too fast for me to read it all.
But if you guys still don't know I just found out it does indeed have a slot for an SD card. And I do believe SD has 32GB cards out already.

The product isn't close to where everybody else is right now either.
Which smartphone needs an ambient light sensor to dynamically change the brightness?
Which smartphone needs a proximity sensor to know when it's placed against an ear?
Which smartphone needs accelerometers and dynamically changes the screen orientation when placed on its side?
Cmon apple... I can rotate my phone 90 degrees to save about a hundred bucks.
Sorry....while it has its probs for sure umm... those features aren't.
Yes, they're not problems... But I could sure as hell live without them. I can honestly say that I've NEVER wished that my phone would change it's brightness depending on the lightning conditions...
I wish that all the time. I change my phone's brightness quite often. I *love* that it has that feature.I can honestly say that I've NEVER wished that my phone would change it's brightness depending on the lightning conditions...
i love it this year is going to be great, and I can't wait to count all the iphones I see get dropped in my every day activities.
yaya for parents who buy that shit for their spoiled kids.
It won't. I can guarantee it.
Apple never puts any kind of card slots on their devices. Hell, even the MacBooks don't have any kind of card slot.

Little off topic but should tie in with Mac World. I'm not a Mac user but it seems like apples updates stuff on a schedule so whats the approximate schedule for the OS update?
Just finished watching the Keynote... I must say I applaud them for the "seemingly" seamless integration of all the different iPhone features. I say "seemingly" because most of the things he queued up were pretty much ready to go. The true test will be actually picking one of these up and playing with it in an Apple store. I think it's a good product, and may change the face of the mobile market as we know it. I for one am very interested to see what Cingular will charge for Internet access on this thing. Hopefully Steve took a close look at that. Remember back when the greedy RIAA folks balked at the .99 per song price and wanted more money to line their pockets? Steve said NO and kept it at .99. I hope he does something similar to keep the Internet access price down. Also, I think it's a very good thing that the iPhone will sense wi-fi and switch to that instead of burning up minutes on EDGE. I'm on T-Mobile, but not under contract so I'm gonna wait and see.
Now, as far as Macworld goes, I've said it several times today to friends, family, and other online communities. It BLOWS. Macworld has always been, up to this point, about Macs. No iLife 07? iLife 06 was introduced and available at last year's Keynote. No refreshes to the current Mac lineup? Shame on you Steve Jobs.
As for the AppleTv - I need something to sling media, not just iTunes stuff, to my bedroom downstairs. This thing has no tv tuner? Come on. I guess I'll be getting a Slingbox then.
I wish that all the time. I change my phone's brightness quite often. I *love* that it has that feature.
32gb? what? where? highest ive seen is 4gb.
think your a little bit wrong budotherwise, ipod would be in deep dodo
See, the real problem I think is that the decision by Apple to call the product the "iPhone" seems to have been a last minute decision.
It had to be.
This product is obviously a multi-function device. Look at the menu for instance. Phone, widescreen, internet etc.
Its not simply a phone but a do all device that actually does everything very well. So all these features are needed.
I woulda called this thing the "iGlobe" cause it reminds me more of a "global" from the tekwar tv show. All this thing needs now is wireless video calls.![]()
