Love your socket 754?

They also fuxored 7800GS support on just about all ULI chipsets. Nvidia, I would like to kindly ask you "WTF ARE YOU THINKING HERE!?"

Even this doesn't directly effect me, I'm in the same boat...I'd be downright pissed off too.

My K8NS-Pro did the same thing once. Try clearing the BIOS with and without the PSU on, letting it sit for around 5 minutes each time. Then try starting it up with just the bare essentials (cpu, video, ram). If it just shows a black screen with no POST or error codes, just let it sit running for like an hour or two. When my machine did the same thing I was sure I had fried it but I turned it on, went to watch a couple eps of X-Files, decided to go check it and magically it had started to POST but stopped because no HDD was plugged in. I love my board to death but damn can it be finicky sometimes.

If it still doesn't work send me a pm and I can throw some other ideas out there.

Edit: The fans spinning up are generally a sign that it's not quite dead yet. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna try that this weekend. I'm still probably going to get another board, but if I can get it working, I'll have something to tide me over for a while.

Exclusive News - NVIDIA disabled ULi's SLI Patch
Posted by overclocker at 14:42

SLI patch was probably the last secret weapon of ULi before it got acquired by NVIDIA earlier this year. It is now confirmed that the SLI patch function on the Uli 1697 will no longer work with Forceware 81.98 and later.

This came as a rude shock to users as NVIDIA acquired ULI and most would expect NV to continue to support ULI and allow it to penetrate the entry level SLI market. Apparently, NVIDIA isn't too happy about the SLI patch and terminated it. Forceware 81.98 and later has a new code that will detect the SLI patch and disable two cards to run in SLI mode. Forceware 81.98 will still work in SLI with ULi 1697 boards.

Some of our readers have bought the ASrock board and a pair of 7600GT and are utterly disappointed by this action. Our users definitely hope that NVIDIA will reverse its decision.

bumflaps... thats just mean,, really sodding mean

Yup. I can wait awhile before upgrading. I'm hoping that before the EOL in Q4 of '07 that we'll get to see the A64 3200+ Venice and 3400+ Venice for skt 754.
To quote Wayne (Wayne's World) "Oh yes - it will be mine!"

Nice article. I just wish they'd have had a skt 754 A64 3000+ Venice in the mix.

Just think of the oced venice as a FX-57 ;) Any speed over 3000+ doesn't really matter and it's indeed comforting to hear this.

Yes, that's true. My oc'd Venice is on par with the FX-55 according to SiSandra cpu benchmarks. Still, I'd like to see it in print. :D

Hey all - sorry for the double post but the big news in skt 754 land is the release (finally) of the 3200+ Venice! Newegg has 'em for $164.00

Link?

Not likely. The 90nm 3000+ Venice is a good oc'er (see sig). I expect this one to be better still, Just my expectation.

whos gona be the first one :D

Idk i was thinking of getting the 3000+ Venice but my 3400+ will do 260x10 prime95 stable at 1.65V and temps never go over 50C.......I am upgrading sometime next year anyways so I might stay with what I have right now but depending how thse 3200+ Venices clock i might pick one up :p

My turion MT-40 did 310 x 10 1.55v 24/7 on water.... But i want to give the newark and vini s754's a chance, can some one please post some stepping's from the venice chip's..i need a chip with out a cold bug...

the xxBHE's and xxBWE's (to an extent) are typically pretty good about having a pretty low cold bug

ewwwww...CG for teh suck! Did any body here ever buy 1 of the 4000+ chip's id like to see some info on them..

There is a move from AMD for a dual core line for lappy's made with dual chan ram, and dual core but there moving it to a new skt...

not to my knowledge, but i'm sure you've seen what my 3700+ was capable of before it died.

also, the new socket you speak of is a mobile socket, S1.. should have dual channel ddr2, and something like 638 pins. there is no direct desktop replacement for s754, unless you count AM2 as the replacement for both s754 and s939 :D
i highly doubt we'll ever see taylor (basically dual core lancaster) on s754..

Well, for my money the Venice cores seem to be best. I have a CG Clawhammer and it doesn't oc near as well as my 3000+ Venice. In fact, the Venice, as of right now, is outperforming the 3700+ Claw. I know that doesn't apply to all cpu's and may well be as a result of the poor Asus K8V mobo the 3700+ Claw is installed in, but the Venice ocs faster, runs cooler, volts higher and costs less than the 3700+ Claw. Right now I'm priming my 3000+ Venice (6+ hrs now) at 289x9 @1.64v with my ram on the DDR333 divider (241 mhz) at 2.5-3-3-8 1T. My Claw could never do that. I'm lucky to get 215x12 on it, but then again, that mobo isn't doing it any favors. I'll be grabbing one of the new 3200+ skt754 Venices from Newegg soon just to see how it does. I think it should be veeerrrry interesting!

Yea im verry interested in finding a good 3700+ they apear to be the best out of all...
actually, i think the 4000+'s are better. problem is they seem to be mainly CAB2E steppings and such. have fun in the cold.

DOH - sorry guys, I misunderstood. Yes, the mobiles are quite intriguing. I agree that the 4000+ would be a quite the beast.

If Taylor were to come out I don't think I would replace my 754 until 2008
:p

If AMD's roadmap is any indication, I'd say that we should see at least some dual core chips come out for s754...

According to this thread, dual cores require lots of bandwidth, which the s754 isn't quite able to supply. That's why we're seeing the transition to DDR2 aswell... (according to that thread :p )

Of course, we all know that's BS. :)

looking closely at it, i have a strong feeling the first dual core mobiles we'll see will be on S1

Hey all,

I just joined the s754 group. It's good to find others who share my enthusiasm for best bang for the buck system (only because of overclocking).

I built a budget gaming system a while back and put up a slideshow here:
budget gaming system build

I also created a group for other socket 754er's to show their stuff, you can join here:

or maybe someone else wants to take ownership of the group? Is anybody interested?

Hey, I was trying to see if anybody here had used one of these things on a lidless Socket 754 chip.

MSI Mobile Pad: http://www.msicomputer.com/msiforms2/turion64.asp
Buy for $10: https://shop.msicomputer.com/App/StoreFront/ProductDetail.aspx?ID=1021

Basically an add on heat spreader that will allow you to use any HSF with a mobile S754 chip.

I did a search, but didn't see anything about it.

Anybody know if the GA-K8NS supports Newark or Turion?

neat idea... but one thing you could do though is see if someone on the forum has a heat spreader they removed from their chip that they dont want any more... it may save you a few dollars
