My advice is that if you are sitting at your desk, just use headphones and/or nearfield studio monitors. It's often very impractical to set up a proper 5.1 configuration around a computer desk. If you can't set it up properly, it's pointless, and you should use headphones instead for that surround sound feel. Use a proper hifi 5.1 setup for a living room.
For $300, you can get many different types of hifi headphones. I don't think you need to spend that much though.
